Some major surprises here.
This biggest is obviously that 'The Lego Movie' has been snubbed from animated feature...It's actually a bit odd. Also majorly surprised that Laura Dern has been nominated for 'Wild' but I think she 100% deserved it. She was fantastic, and I've actually enjoyed the film overall more than anything in the Best Picture Category. (I've seen 5/8 so far, 2 more this weekend) Marion is another shock, but she's always fantastic and was horribly snubbed for 'Rust and Bone' a couple of years ago, so this makes up for that somewhat. Ecstatic for Reese Witherspoon - What a comeback of a performance, she is stunning in 'Wild', too. But I HOPE Julianne wins this year, it's her time, I know it. Some real throwaway nominations as usual, too: I am a massive Keira Knightley stan, but her performance in 'The Imitation Game', which great wasn't Oscar worthy, to me. Same with Mark Ruffalo. Also Meryl, she's always good but this was just a camp over the top performance. If anyone were to be nominated from 'Into The Woods' it should have been Blunt. AGOG at no The Lego Movie, has it down as a lock to WIN. I hope this opens the door for the vastly superior Big Hero 6, but suspect Dragon probably has it. Not a huge shock at Amy not being up, she lost a lot of momentum of late, but Marion Cotillard was NOT the one I expected to slip in instead, really expected Blunt if not Amy. Laura Dern is also a bit of a surprise, but then the 5th spot in SA was one that had about 6 potential people vying for it.

I'm just a bit shocked at NO nominations at all for 'Big Eyes' in general. Not even Christoph! (But I perhaps shouldn't be, one of my managers says it's not very good and was a bit boring).
'The Lego Movie' is a massive WTF though. Only one nomination for Best Original Song? That performance is going to be incredible btw.  But hopefully with TLM not being nommed it opens the door for 'Big Hero 6' to swipe the win away from HTTYD2.

I'm actually quite saddened at the snub for 'The Lego Movie'. Like John, i thought it was a shoe in to win it all, so this is baffling.
But on the plus side, i will now commence my big catch-up viewing period in time for the ceremony *.* |

This is decent news though as it means I only have about 10-12 films to watch before the big day now. Birdman, The Imitation Game, Wild, Foxcatcher, Selma, Whiplash, Boyhood, Two Days, Two Nights, The Judge, American Sniper I think and I'll still watch Big Eyes even if it isn't up for anything as it looks good.

I can't wrap my head around The Lego Movie snub. I really enjoyed 'Boxtrolls' and 'HTTYD2' were great but 'The Lego Movie' was at a different level, for animation alone. I feel as though politics must have gotten in the way somewhere, or maybe the fact the ending isn't animated makes it ineligible?
I'm really happy 'Lost Stars' from Begin Again was nominated. As much as I hate Adam, he sings it beautifully. I was hooked on this song for some while. Another WTF nomination: Robert Duvall, The Judge. That was an average performance in an average film...at best. I went to the press screening for that film and everyone was falling asleep. |

But everyone sees it as an animation film, so I don't like that they've done that, if that is the case.

Boyhood to smash everything. One of my favourite 2014 films. And can Ethan Hawke finally get the Oscar he deserves? He's so underrated!
I also hope The Tale of the Princess Kaguya wins. If you haven't seen it, you have to!

Echoing the sadness at The Lego Movie's snub, probably my favourite movie of last year :'( seems very strange for it to be acknowledged for a song but not that as well, could have a quite good chance at winning that one too?
I would love The Grand Budapest Hotel to win Best Picture, but I'd imagine Boyhood will be running away with that if the odds are anything to go by. Hopefully that wins one of the nine awards it's up for at least. |

Christoph was the stand-out, he was especially brilliant in the court room near the end, I'd have like to see him recognised. I found the movie overall to be very enjoyable and it had a nice mix of humour to it. Not all that bothered about the Lego Movie snub. Really hoped that Gone Girl would get a nod for Best Picture but oh well, at least Rosamund is there. Well and truly on the Boyhood train right now but still got three of the Best Picture nominees to see so maybe one of them could steal my affections before the big night. |

I am kind of happy the Lego movie got snubbed (and not too surprised actually, I found predictions I made a few months ago and I had Lego being snubbed)

Ooh another movie that's been snubbed, that I thought would have got a nomination or two is 'A Most Violent Year'. Got recognition from most other award ceremonies, but none at the Oscars.

Chastain might have harmed her chances this year with a number of solidly received performances in a few films, diluting her votes across a few and ending up with none.

American Sniper Birdman Boyhood The Grand Budapest Hotel The Imitation Game Selma The Theory of Everything Whiplash Oh my gosh. I have watched only two movies so far.. So, I can't take a final decision about them. However, "Boyhood" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" are very good movies. I'm so glad that Marion Cotillard has been nominated for "Best Female Performance"! Her acting was very good in "Two Days, One Night". I also loved Arquette's performance in "Boyhood". She was very sweet as single mom. Meryl Streep didn't deserve to have a nomination for "Best Supporting Role". She was good but her role was a caricature and nothing else. However, it's a tradition for her. "Interstellar" deserves to win all the techinical categories. It's a visual stunning film. Best Original Song / All of them are really forgettable. I totally miss the great ballads of the 90's. |
