On This Day In History
After just one week of availability on the iTunes store, The Beatles music sold more than 450,000 albums and 2 million individual songs. The Fab Four's debut on iTunes was accompanied by an extensive world-wide marketing campaign.
Now Thats What I Call Music! 77 aka Now 77 was released just before the harsh winter of 2010. It contained 44 tracks and 12 UK #1 singles from the late Summer and Autumn era. This was the volume that gave series debuts to artists like Cee Lo Green (as a solo artist), Mike Posner, The Wanted, Olly Murs, Eliza Doolittle, Bruno Mars (as a lead artist), Labrinth (as a lead artist) and Katy B.
There were many, many incredible omissions from this era which didnt make the cut. This included a two-week #1 single from Alexandra Burke, who herself had featured on the previous two volumes, but not on this one. Also omitted were hits from Kings Of Leon, JLS, Westlife, Alex Gaudino, will.i.am, Katy Perry, The Wanted, The Saturdays, Emmas Imagination and P!nk to name a handful.
This volume was to be the only occasion there would be featured music from Duck Sauce, Rumer, Travie McCoy (as a lead artist) and Brandon Flowers (as a solo artist).
Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good Normally by now I would complain about the overuse of the same kind of themes and colours, and this artwork doesnt appear to be different to the other volumes of the time, but I do find it quite striking and it works well. Multi-coloured snowboards thrown around the logo might seem over the top but I quite like the backdrop of the mountains too which hasnt been seen since an artwork from the 90s.
Disc 1 Favourite: Tinie Tempah feat. Eric Turner Written In The Stars The chorus in this song, sung by Eric Turner, is what makes this great. A frequently used song for Sky Sports football over the years too which has helped to prolong its longevity. Tinies other song on this disc with Swedish House Mafia is quite an anthem too.
Disc 2 Favourite: Mumford & Sons The Cave Unusual for a song that peaked so low would feature on this volume and be a personal favourite too. This is, for me, the best single ever made by British band Mumford & Sons. Its so good to see this song feature on this volume.
Disc 3 Tracklist: (A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)
1. Alexandra Burke feat. Laza Morgan Start Without You3:32{1} 2. Katy Perry Teenage Dream 3:47{2} 3. The Wanted Heart Vacancy 3:42{2} 4. Ellie Goulding The Writer 4:11{19} 5. Hurts Wonderful Life 3:34{21} ---------- Total time: 1:19:29
Overall Rating: 6/10 Good This volume is mostly good, but theres lots of filler in the second disc which spoils this volume for me a bit, when compared with some of the banging omissions that were shockingly overlooked. Many of the songs that were included have not aged well and are all but forgotten. However, for the second volume in a row, its good to see almost 100% of the available disc space getting used instead of wasted (even if it was used for low quality songs). Also nice to see an even spread of genres across both discs.

A great edition, though as Andrew say's there is some filler in the album too.
Here's my Top 5:-
1) Brandon Flowers - Crossfire 2) Flo Rida & David Guetta - The Club Can't Handle Me 3) Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand 4) Mumford & Sons - The Cave 5) Swedish House Mafia vs Tinie Tempah - Miami 2 Ibiza

Miami 2 Ibiza is my fave from disc 1, the drop is euphoric in it and from disc 2 my fave is Katy On A Mission, which sounded different to anything else in the charts at the time and I really liked it back then.
Some of those omissions though definitely should have been included, Seek Bromance, Im In Love (I Wanna Do It) and Let You Go especially!

I'm actually a big fan of this Now, I remember listening to this on repeat for quite a while too - for a longer time than I normally (or used to) do anyway. Whilst there is some filler, it's actually not bad filler at all for the most part. Rumer, Alesha Dixon, N-Dubz, Joe McElderry, and McFly I could live without but I do enjoy everything else here. Even the Jay Sean track is a bit of a guilty pleasure
Disc 1 Top 510: 1. Mike Posner Cooler Than Me 2. Tinie Tempah feat. Eric Turner Written In The Stars 3. Katy Perry Firework 4. Swedish House Mafia vs. Tinie Tempah Miami 2 Ibiza 5. Rihanna Only Girl (In The World) 6. Roll Deep Green Light 7. Flo Rida feat. David Guetta Club Cant Handle Me 8. Enrique Iglesias feat. Nicole Scherzinger Heartbeat 9. Cee Lo Green Forget You 10. Usher feat. Pitbull DJ Got Us Fallin In Love
Closely followed by everything else Dynamite used to be a favourite but it hasn't aged well for me really, although I don't mind hearing it out at the shops I never go out of my way for it Disc 2 Top 510: 1. B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams Airplanes 2. Plan B Prayin 3. The Script For The First Time 4. Adele Make You Feel My Love 5. Brandon Flowers Crossfire 6. Shontelle Impossible 7. Nelly Just A Dream 8. Travie McCoy feat. Bruno Mars Billionaire 9. Bruno Mars Just The Way You Are 10. Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow Shame
The artwork is fairly nice, it's vibrant and I like the theme of snowboarding as an album cover. I feel like the snowboards themselves are bit boring with super basic designs though.
As for omissions, I'm not too bothered about much there Teenage Dream would've been nice but I imagine Katy only wanted one of her album-selling singles to be on this Now album - so I'm very happy they went with Firework over Teenage Dream even though the latter had a higher peak. Avicii Tim Berg, DJ Fresh, B.o.B., Pink, Scouting For Girls, will.i.am, Mark Ronson & The Business Intl, Kings of Leon, and My Chemical Romance are the only omissions I would have liked to have made it. DJ Fresh & Pink especially, even though their peaks aren't too great the songs themselves are iconic and feel much bigger than they actually were, likely due to how many bangers were in the charts at the time to be fair.

Hmm this edition didn't have many big highlights for me on plug.dj tonight and was understandably dated in a lot of places! The ultimate high of the album is very high however, that is Mumford & Sons' 'The Cave' on disc 2 which is an absolutely stunning song I have never massively taken to the group on the whole (I never felt the urge to seek out their albums for instance) but this one song in particular is a masterpiece. My disc 1 favourite is 'Please Don't Let Me Go' which was released during my height of Olly Murs stanning, when my username on everything was JadeGagaOlly and I would spam it all day long still a really pleasant and carefree tune. 'Miami 2 Ibiza' rivals it though as that is in my top 3 of Swedish House Mafia's discography along with 'One (Your Name)' and 'Greyhound'!
