BuzzJack Music Forum _ Britney Spears _ VMA 2016 - OFFICIAL THREAD

Britney is famous (and infamous) for her VMA performances.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW41qbpKPwk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTMPBeCXZeQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmJ1Pa_fZGI

There is nothing solid, but signs point to her possibly performing this year.

A) The album is out the WEEK OF the VMAS. Coincidence, or very specific marketing decision?
B) She has a two day break in Vegas at the time of the VMAs
C) VMAs just retweeted this:

What do you think? It could be massive for her.

Posted by: Tyler 4th August 2016, 01:26 PM

And she just cancelled two shows from her residency just this past week, in order to have that break.

It's happening. ohmy.gif

Correct me if i'm wrong or are those the two days BEFORE the VMAS?

Posted by: Tyler 4th August 2016, 01:37 PM

Vmas are on the 28th. She now has a break from the 28th - 1st. Before she had shows the 28th & 29th.

Which means she is probably adding the new songs on the 17th.

Posted by: Nick F1 4th August 2016, 09:05 PM

she better perform, like girl kill us!

Posted by: Kye 4th August 2016, 11:29 PM

Yeah, she's definitely performing.

I saw that people were getting mad because she cancelled the shows and they'd booked hotels/flights etc.
She wouldn't cancel for nothing.. it has to be the VMA's wub.gif

Posted by: Joe. 4th August 2016, 11:45 PM

Yeah the only shows she cancelled last time were because of an injury. It's too random to kill off two random shows in the middle of a leg so far in advance. It has to be because of scheduling.

Poor fans that won't see her though, I would be very sad.

Britney and G-Eazy might kick off the VMAs with a sizzling performance of "Make Me."

http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/tylaaah1/media/0DA15328-93E7-4AB9-805D-1CB996EBED73_zpsnp2x7fit.jpg.html

Britney will need to pull out all the stops this era to rinse out the bad taste in the Britney Army's mouth following the "Make Me" music video controversy, and a performance at the MTV VMAs on Aug. 28 would certainly do the trick.

Not only is there a rumor Britney will open the VMAs with a performance, but it could be with her "Make Me" collaborator G-Eazy. One fan is claiming the Oakland rapper walked into the store where they work at and spilled the beans.

http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/tylaaah1/media/A4CE9A3F-13B8-4702-967B-BAD5B3240B91_zpsngidghfz.jpg.html

Don't believe everything you read, but it is suspect Britney cancelled both of her Piece Of Me shows that weekend without explanation.

G-Eazy doesn't have shows scheduled that weekend either.

I really hope this (if it happens) is as iconic as it should be and propels Make Me into being a hit and helps the album sell really well!

Posted by: Tyler 8th August 2016, 07:42 PM

If she is not performing her team needs to make an announcement about it before the end of this week.

This fanbase doesn't deserve two meltdowns in the span of one single.

Posted by: Jonjo 8th August 2016, 07:54 PM

Lets hope they re-enact the original video on stage!

Britney to perform in glittery pink body paint and nothing else please! *.*

Tbh, that outfit alone would get people talking. Looool

Yaaaaas! So this will be the first live performance of 'Make Me'? I'm hoping this delivers and is everything the video wasn't but should have been. Plus 'Just Love Me' seems to have been hyped to death so hopefully it's a spectacle for that too!

Considering we have Carpool and album release that week, could be a decent climb for Make Me.

The album could also do truly impressive numbers.

Posted by: Euphorique 16th August 2016, 01:41 PM

I'm hoping she does a real live acoustic performance of this. I dunno, I just feel the era of lipsynch is truly over and she should be confident enough to pull this one out live - its not like its a very demanding song in the first place

I don't want acoustic anything, unless it's a cute intro. Britney is a performer.

They all lip sync when doing choreo; Katy Perry, Beyonce etc. The thing that sets them apart is that Britney doesn't pre-record live vocals to make it seem less blatantly lip synced. She shouldn't be lip syncing to the studio version as that makes it all very obvious.

Posted by: Euphorique 16th August 2016, 04:06 PM

I'd rather she set herself apart from what everyone else is doing right now. A cheesy lipped performance wont do much for her.

I do agree that using pre-recorded live vocals could make a difference, for her anyway.

Posted by: Tyler 16th August 2016, 04:43 PM

No acoustic please.

A nice acoustic entrance that is fine. But, no one is here for a full slow set from Britney Spears.

Posted by: Euphorique 16th August 2016, 04:50 PM

Why not something like this?

Serve me vocals Britney. Make Me aint that hard

Posted by: Joe. 16th August 2016, 05:21 PM

I deffo think she'd struggle with the falsetto live. But I do really think it's important they do a pre-recorded vocal. It makes ALL the difference.

What she should actually do is enter with a Gimme More acoustic. Then blow up into Make Me.

Britney Spears is headed back to the start. The "Clumsy" singer is the first confirmed performer for the Aug. 28 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, marking her return to the VMA stage for the first time in a decade. She'll be joined by her "Make Me" partner in crime, rapper G-Eazy, for the world premiere live performance of the single from her upcoming ninth studio album, Glory (Aug. 26).

But, as long as she isn't closing I'll be happy. Whatever makes her feel the most in her element as I know this took a lot of guts for her to finally commit too.

No.
IF ANYTHING. A VMA performance is the only thing that could save it at this point. The song is already benefitting from the announcement. Britney hasn't performed since the 'Gimme More' performance, this is f***ing huge. Let's not act like she just announced she was appearing on Ellen or something. This is an iconic moment for her career.

Posted by: Addy K!ng 17th August 2016, 01:19 AM

I totally agree about VMA comeback, but MM from it could benefit only on sales/streaming format and that is a ? mark...I still don't see radio giving this another push...we kept saying this when video came, album preorder, 69 cents deal...nothing changed on radios.

Here's an article about the performance from one of the VMAs producers

Posted by: Tyler 23rd August 2016, 06:25 PM

Britney confirmed she's performing at the VMAs this Sunday, and our lives have forever changed.

Not much is known about the "Slumber Party" singer's upcoming performance except that she's rumored to perform her new single "Make Me" alongside G-Eazy, but the show's executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic tells EW to expect the unexpected.

“She’s not one to do the same thing she’s done in the past,” he said. “It’s going to be something you’ve not seen her do before. It’s going to separate her from other performances.”

Other artists performing on Sunday include Rihanna, who will sing a medley of her biggest hits before accepting the Video Vanguard Award, as well as Nick Jonas, Future and rumored performances from Beyonce, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

Undoubtedly all eyes will be on Spears. She’s set to perform her new single, “Make Me” with G-Eazy, and producers are promising a showing that’s not “a typical performance.”

“She’s been on that stage many times. She hadn’t wanted to do them for awhile [because] she wanted to focus on other things, but she decided she wanted to do them again so we’re doing them again,” Spears’ longtime manager Larry Rudolph said.

“The VMAs are special. I don’t want to lump them in with every other award show. She’s like the queen of the VMAs,” Rudolph continued. “Probably three or four of the most iconic moments in MTV history are of her at the VMAs. We’re very mindful of that and respectful of the platform.”

Even though it's a bit annoying she did Me, Myself & I compared to doing a song from Glory, the mash-up saved it for me. The first half I was really underwhelmed (apart from the fact Britney looked absolutely perfect) but the mash-up really picked up the pace and made it pretty good!

Posted by: Addy K!ng 29th August 2016, 03:08 AM

I think she did really good...the first part was really good and also the chemistry between her and G-Eazy was wub.gif

But I agree with the part that she could have used something from Glory instead Me Myself and I.

Posted by: Kye 29th August 2016, 03:09 AM

My favourite part genuinely was Momney in full force:

Posted by: Addy K!ng 29th August 2016, 03:10 AM

My fave part was she touched his crotch :queen:

Posted by: Umi 29th August 2016, 03:34 AM

I liked it quite a bit, I'm a bit disappointed that there's so much negativity towards it from a lot of fans. It wasn't spectacular, and I'd have liked it to be (the start was quite creative and interesting, so I honestly thought they were gonna go all out), but I thought the style of performance was great. She looked sexy and cool, choreo was pretty good and the chemistry with G-Eazy was there.

My only complaints about the performance relate to it basically seeming a bit underbaked. The projections weren't used as well as I hoped (excellent at first, but then nothing), the interactions with G-Eazy occasionally were rather lazy/uninspired (I feel like the crotch-grabbing will take away attention from the better elements of the performance, unfortunately) and it felt just too short. It needed one more interesting thing and I think it would have been great.

The song probably needed more than it got, but it wasn't a bad performance by any means. I liked it a lot and I think Britney should be happy with it.

Posted by: JosephSpears 29th August 2016, 04:06 AM

Was it her best ever performance? No, definitely not, it was quite safe in a way really, but that's good and I'm really glad it wasn't a total cock-up. The opening with the shadows was excellent, and I quite liked the mash-up even if a song from Glory would've been much better. I liked it overall anyway and I hope it gives it a nice little boost on iTunes!

Posted by: Umi 29th August 2016, 04:08 AM

It has got something of an iTunes boost already! Gone up 4% pretty much immediately. Should be quite comfortably #2 for a while!

Posted by: Joe. 29th August 2016, 04:09 AM

I enjoyed the opening particularly. I feel like it was a really 'cool' performance and it caters a lot to the general public rather than her fanbase. Other than her dodgy lip syncing, the reaction outside her fanbase is surprisingly positive.

Posted by: Liаm 29th August 2016, 04:15 AM

Yeah the mash-up saved it for me too. I just found the Make Me.... part a bit meh, but then I'm not a huge huge fan of the song anyway. It would have been nice to hear a Glory track but the MMI bit was really unexpected so it felt more impactful for that.

I guess to sum it up, it was good but it wasn't the sort of really memorable performance we're used to from her at the VMAs. It felt like a new or emerging artist rather than a legend.

Posted by: Tyler 29th August 2016, 04:35 AM

I thought it started off so promising in the beginning! Like a 10/10 performance was coming. I really enjoyed her doing the full out choreography for 'Make Me' like we saw in the rehearsal video. I enjoyed the mash up as well, she looked amazing, confident and she danced great.

My biggest complaint is how short it was and how there was equally just as much G-easy parts as hers. I think what it was missing was that closing touch that just sealed it all together. For instance she had better stage presence than at the BBMA's, but that closing with Toxic really just sold it. I think if she had done just a verse of DYWCO at the end with the choreography she did at Vegas with the pole it really would have done wonders for the overall presentation.

And when you even look at Vegas performances from around the BBMA's, it just seems like an entirely different person. She really has improved so much in the span of just a couple months.

The thing I need to grasp as a fan is that Britney isn't here to ruffle feathers and be the most controversial star on the planet anymore. She has moved on from those days and just wants to put on a good show focused on fun and performing, not the theatrics.

First watch I was underwhelmed because of all the hype MTV had created, but on second watch I'm really proud at how hard she has worked to get back to a caliber performing worthy of celebrating.

8.5/10

...beyond the fact he is a solid 8/10 would bang.

That background with the hands and the opening reminded me of those macrophilia videos on plug the other day (I did say they were better than the Make Me video)

If we compare this to any performance from 2006-2016 it's an 11/10.

The more I watch and see how PRESENT she is again the more I f***ing adore it. She hit the moves just as good as the backup dancers and she oozed confidence. Fantastic.

wub.gif Spot on analysis tbh.

I think it was a really important performance in cementing her as a popstar that still looks amazing, can move, show confidence and sex. There's a possibility, due to her nerves that she herself wanted less focus on herself.

I'm pleased.

Glad it's on her VEVO!

Glad they were speedy in getting it up on Vevo! Should help MM out when it comes to the Billboard Hot 100, right?

I have no idea if that counts? Especially as a mash up

OH MY! Britney is back.... again!!!! yahoo.gif cheer.gif w00t.gif

Posted by: London81 29th August 2016, 09:23 AM

Just watched it and I loved it - I know it's not the big productions we've been used to at the VMA's (bar 2007's disaster) but she genuinely looked more natural and moved better than I've seen her in ages. It didn't look like she was following a series of steps in choreography like it has done for ages now. It looked spontaneous and she was alive. Yes!

Posted by: Neil 29th August 2016, 10:00 AM

I loved the performance! She looked incredible <3 My only gripe is why did she take the mic back toward the end of the performance as it really just highlighted the awkward lip syncing.

It should count as there was 30 seconds of both songs, so I think it'scounting towards both

Anyway I honestly don't get what y'all are raving about. It was all so awkward, the dancing was off and she looked like she was planning her next move every time.
Even her miming was off in the MM&I part...

Posted by: Tyler 29th August 2016, 01:04 PM

Her moves did NOT look awkward. Vegas last year or the BBMA's could be called stiff (at least in the first half), but her confidence was great and she danced great.

You can go in on the lipping though.

Posted by: Joe. 29th August 2016, 01:12 PM

The performance was underwhelming for sure. She needed more dancers, more interesting choreo and better production but what I liked most about it was how confident and natural she seemed compared to the BBMAs. (Even though I preferred that performance overall).

Miming was off for sure though. :')

Posted by: Tyler 29th August 2016, 01:20 PM

Exactly. The problem was not her being fluid in her moves, she was on top of everything including that snap (lol the little things).

Add about 5 more dancers and a walk down to the lower stage to go into 'MM&I' and it would have made the world of difference. The stiff comments are so annoying when the same people were calling her stiff here;

And some people acting like that's on the same level as this.

BRITNEY'S BIGGEST COMPETITION IS HERSELF

Starting to think 'Just Luv Me' is a song she wrote to her fans and the GP.

Posted by: Leonagwen 29th August 2016, 01:22 PM

She proved that she can't sing live.Good dancer and performer but always lip synching. She's not the only one though. Most pop stars lip synch on live performances. There are exceptions though.

That I wanna go performance is still my fav Britney performance of all time. Sorry Slave 2001.

Yeah I agree, that was what stood out to me most. I actually really enjoyed the performance! It did seemed to be hyped up a lot and didn't meet those expectations but, at the same time, I didn't feel disappointed or underwhelmed by that. She was confident and natural for sure! Loved the 'Me Myself & I' insert, Britney's vocals suited the hook SO well and I want an official studio version of that! It also showed how much more oomph a specially-recorded vocal delivers instead of just using a studio track; I think the 'Make Me...' parts of the performance could have really done with a pre-recorded vocal.

Why are people surprised she didn't sing live? My biggest shock was her use of.... a hand held microphone. When did that last happen?

Britney scored the highest audience for the entire show.

I think lip syncing is a really dated thing unless you're a drag queen. Most pop stars now rely heavily on a backing track but they don't lip to it intentionally.

LOL at the hand thing.

The lip synching thing is a non-issue really. It's not as if they even pretend she's singing live.
Britney in no way suffers from doing it, she's been the best selling 'live' show in Vegas for 3 years.

They'd be a cute couple and it'd be a smart PR move for them.

I do think he often looks a little bit, like, greasy though.

Finally watched / running commentary ~

I LOVE the opening silhouette sequence - it's a bold way to make a much anticipated entrance showing that she's been hiding away but now she's BACK. Also a little artistic point which obviously isn't intentional but there are some shots of the audience's hands with her dancing in front of them - I love that the hands reaching out to her extend to the audience's hands too - a neat little unintentional moment!

The chorus choreography was good and it's brought to life more with the additional two dancers. G-EAZY IS SO FIT HE CAN DO NO WRONG HERE. Lucky Britney Bitch I wish I was her HAND sad.gif

Did not expect the transition into Me Myself and I ;o While we all wanted more 'Make Me' this will give the performance more attention so I guess it's welcomed. I'm really glad they eventually went back to 'Make Me' and did the final chorus after G-Eazy's part, it's my favourite part of the whole song.

I feel like Greta doesn't really have a leg to stand on when it comes to people ripping each other off.

Posted by: Oliver 29th August 2016, 05:28 PM

Just watched it now! The only thing missing for me was the singing. Even if she tried singing live it would have been top drawer, I agree that the dancing seemed a lot less "calculated" than what we've seen the last few years. I actually smiled when it finished which is a good thing as it means it actually had an effect on me!

Totally didn't click it was the G-Eazy "Me, Myself & I", had it in my head she'd be lipping to Beyonce! laugh.gif

Posted by: London81 29th August 2016, 05:42 PM

All I can say is I've watched the official music video twice (I forced myself to watch it the second time). And I've already watched this performance 4/5 times today and will watch it more still.

When I realised it was going into 'Me, Myself and I', I worried for her because I thought that meant she would be miming to the original Bebe version! laugh.gif I'm glad that she did some vocals especially for the performance because, as Liam said, doing those specially recorded vocals helps add some life to it. Not that she didn't give it her all but I always find that miming over the normal studio version of the song brings any performance down because it makes it look odd.

Anyway, her performance was briefly mentioned on the news on the BBC. They were talking about the VMAs and all of Beyonces win and quickly mentioned that Britney doing a comeback performance and Rihanna winning the Lifetime award.

I really don't mind miming but why pre-record vocals for Me, Myself & I and not Make Me? It just sounds weird with the studio version. She sounded so great on Me, Myself & I wub.gif

Apart from that I loved it, she looked great and omg her dancing has even improved since the Billboard Awards!

But it's not Beyonce's fault that she actually is the biggest and legendary and one of the most recognized performer of all time. She is just the best and throws everyone in water.

Britney's performances used to be as iconic as Beyonce's, but now is just fine for what she is these days...I guess someone from MTV really hates her for putting her right after Beyonce...joking.
