BuzzJack Music Forum _ Kylie and Dannii Minogue _ KYLIE NON-SINGLES RATE ● PWL

Posted by: Liam.k. 8th April 2020, 07:24 PM

Welcome all! Following on from 2018's Singles Rate, it's time to shine a spotlight on some hidden gems. Album tracks, B-sides, soundtracks, these are the songs officially available but weren't released as singles. There's over 200 songs to rate so I've separated into four categories to make this less daunting: PWL era, DeCon era, 00s and 10s (the Parlophone era is too big to have in one section and having the 80s as its own section would be disproportionately small).

We start with the PWL era. Give them all a rate between 0-10, allowing for an optional 11 and -1.

I've made a Spotify playlist below so you can listen to any you're unfamiliar with.

I Miss You
I'll Still Be Loving You
Look My Way
Love at First Sight [1988]

Nothing to Lose
Tell Tale Signs
My Secret Heart
I'm Over Dreaming (Over You)
Heaven and Earth
Enjoy Yourself

Always Find the Time
The World Still Turns
One Boy Girl
Things Can Only Get Better
Count the Days
Rhythm of Love

Too Much of a Good Thing
Let's Get To It
Right Here, Right Now [1991]
Live and Learn
No World Without You
I Guess I Like It Like That

Getting Closer
Glad to Be Alive
Made in Heaven

Thanks Sam! biggrin.gif We seem to have similar album favourites - I'm listening through now and 'Things Can Only Get Better' would have been a perfect fifth single!

I love EY - such a solid pop album and I still listen to it a lot

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 13th April 2020, 02:28 PM

EY is so overlooked by many but it's my fave pwl album.

Posted by: Monzo 15th April 2020, 07:36 AM

Just curious: Did or do you enjoy other PWL music or is it Kylie only? Me, it was also Jason Donovan, of course. I'm still loving Donna Summer's PWL album and Lonnie Gordon's "Happening All Over Again". Big Fun and Sonia also bring back sweet childhood memories. "I Just Don't Have The Heart" is the only Cliff Richard song I ever played a lot, so I really enjoyed Stock Aitken Waterman productions from their Kylie era, still wondering why they vanished so fast in the early 90's.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 15th April 2020, 01:29 PM

I loved so many pwl stuff, I was a big Jason Donovan fan, really loved his 2nd album between the lines, Sonias debut was great and was so happy to see it re released a few years ago with the bonus tracks, everybody knows is a real pop gem of an album. Another gem from this time was the London boys 12 commandments of dance album which again was great to see re released. So many big hits from pwl back then and kylie was the only one to sustain a career the whole way through to now. Big fun I liked handful of promises and pat and mick I havnt stopped dancing yet, I never ever managed to get their album when released and still havnt yet. Rick astley also had some great songs and he has done well again in the last few years.

I'm still listening to that album, not just the singles, but I really love "London Nights" and "Harlem Desire". Whenever I listen to "Requiem" it makes me sad. I just checked: London Boys are dead for 24 years now. Feels like yesterday I was shocked about their death.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 15th April 2020, 05:02 PM

It was so tragic what happened the London boys and great to see another fan, i listen to their album alot, never understood why my love flopped in the uk as it's great, it went top 20 here in ireland. London boys always remind me of kylie performing hand on your heart on totp.

I read that many tracks on Boy Krazy's album were originally written for Kylie's fifth PWL album if it had happened. I enjoyed all Boy Krazy singles and some album tracks like "Different Class", but I can't image any of these songs being good enough for Kylie. I don't see any single (or even album) material there.

Is this likely to be open for a little while? If you're doing all the eras then I'd love to take a listen as I'm not familiar with most of these at all.

Hey Dandy, yeah I'm planning on leaving these open for a bit. I'm going to post the second part but this one will remain open, then all votes of each era will be combined, much like the Ultimate Madonna thread.

Boy Krazy were one of Stock & Waterman's final acts who had little or no sucess in the UK like Delage, The Twins or Nancy Davis. About two years after Boy Krazy's debut single "That's What Love Can Do" had flopped in the UK where it peaked at 86, a famous US radio dj heard the song in a club and fell in love with it. He put it on his radio playlist and the rest is history: "That's What Love Can Do" became a top 20 US Hot 100 hit, Their follow-uo "Good Times With Bad Boys" charted in Hot 100, too, but then Boy Krazy's lead singer left and the group quit.

I've discovered Boy Krazy in 1993 when they were big in the US and I remember how nice it was to have new PWL material once again. Bananarama and Sybil were also around that time with Stock & Waterman songs, but I have to say Boy Krazy are more classic PWL.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 16th April 2020, 10:10 AM

I listened to that what love can do, it feels like a Sonia b side, not as catchy as much of the pwl work. I loved sybils the love I lost and when I'm good and ready, the love I lost especially was catchy. I also enjoyed the bananarama pwl work. From listening to that's what love can do I'm happy kylie didnt do a 5th pwl studio album. When kylie announced she was leaving pwl I was worried at the time but it was a great decision as I dont think she would be as successful as she was long term had she stayed.

I'm wondering if Kylie had stayed with PWL what songs would have been on her 5th album, so I listened to Stock & Waterman produced albums from 1992 & 1993, imagining how Kylie could have sung them or if they were originally written for her. Here are my picks for Kylie's 5th PWL album:

Bananarama: Please Yourself
- Last Thing On My Mind (2nd single because Pete Waterman loves this song so much Steps had to record it, too)
- More, More, More (3rd single because three out of four Kylie's PWL albums had cover versions as single release)

Sybil: Good 'N' Ready
- When I'm Good And Ready (1st single)
- Stronger Together (4th single)
- Didn't See The Signs

Boy Krazy: Boy Krazy
- Good Times With Bad Boys
- Different Class

A 5th album just wouldnt have worked and would have have had disappointing sales.i do like last thing on my mind but couldn't see it as a kylie single and it would have been a step backwards for kylie.

Mmmm an interesting post & yeah it would be fun to speculate what tracks would/could have been given to Kylie if she stayed with PWL for another album. Another song that could be added to that list is Suzette Charles with "Free to Love Again" - could see Kylie doing that track as well as "When I'm Good and Ready', but Kylie leaving when she did was a smart move, as by 1993 PWL weren't racking up the hits they used to. They were already starting to fade as was Kylie, her 4th album 'LGTI' only managed a #15 peak, & yeah okay the 'Greatest Hits' did get to #1, but if she'd released another album with them, which funnily enough would have probably been '93, then it may have missed the top 20, a lead single may have gotten her a low top 10 or top 20 peak, but I'd predict any follow-ups wouldn't get the same attention & she would have ended up fading into obsurity.

Plus PWL didn't know where to take her next, look at the mish-mash of sounds on 'LGTI;, very lacking direction. Although I do think some of these could have been given to Kylie, but of course they would have written a whole bunch of new songs for her as well & had flown some other producers in, as she was their top priority. Honestly surprised they didn't put up much more of a fight to keep her, considering she was their top selling act & after she left, they really struggled, by 1994 they had no hits at all.

Just for fun what a possible 5th album could have looked like, using Monzo's said tracks & plus a few of Suzette Charles tracks (just for fun):

01. When I'm Good and Ready (Sybil)
02. Free To Love Again (Suzette Charles)

03. Stronger Together (Sybil)
04. Last Thing On My Mind (Bananarama)
05. Didn't See The Signs (Sybil)
06. More, More, More (Bananarama)
07. Good Times With Bad Boys (Boy Krazy)
08. Different Class (Boy Krazy)
09. Don't Stop (All The Love You Can Give) (Suzette Charles)
10. After You're Gone (Suzette Charles)[/color]

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 25th June 2020, 09:23 PM

She left at the right time and based on those songs it was just in time as SAW were fading away at that time as was Kylie. Likely another SAW album would have been even less successful than let's get to it.

Posted by: pippa 26th June 2020, 11:57 PM

Kylie made a very important decision when leaving S.A.W. and it was a career saving decision.
The journey they had together ended naturally.
