wasn't Man In The Mirror popular before his death though? just with a low peak.
I think Always On My Mind would get the biggest boost from Pet Shop Boys' death, that seems appropriate and is actually well-known with the public. |

I dont know about repeaking or peaking higher than their current peak...
But I can only imagine when MADONNA dies.... (that will be a FLOOD as she has SOOOOO MANY HITS) I can see her with around 60 songs inside the Top100 The same with Rihanna already... I can see her with another 50 songs up there already.... |

I think it is more likely that an artist who is known for one or two classics would get a posthumous chart re-peak rather than the likes of Madonna. I may be remembering incorrectly here but I Whitney didn't go top 10 with any of her releases (and I think she passed away on the Saturday/Sunday) despite being a legend and I think that was down to her having so many big hits. I think 'I Will Always Love You' made #12.
My knowledge of chart peaks isn't as strong pre-2000 so in terms of 21st century artists, I'd suggest maybe Christina Aguilera's 'Hurt' could be her "swan song" (to make a morbid subject sound slightly pleasant ). Surely it is a lot more remembered than its #11 peak suggests. Beyonce's would probably be 'Halo' but I doubt that'd out-peak its #4 position - having said that, when the time unfortunately comes, I think Beyonce has secured her legendary status to the point that I think she could have a posthumous #1, and it'd be with a song that didn't make #1 originally. EDIT: I've just read that Cyndi Lauper's 'True Colors' only made #12 originally. Surely that could go top 10 when the time comes? TC, 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' and 'Time After Time' will likely be the songs she will be remembered for. This post has been edited by Scene: May 30 2016, 11:10 AM |

I can't believe people are talking about people in their 30s... they might live another 50 years and be completely forgotten by then!

I can't see either Beyonce or Rihanna ever being forgotten about while they're both alive. They've had too much influence on the music scene to just fall into obscurity. |

I find it strange there was no more of an effect and some massive Nirvana album buying Nirvana were nothing like as mainstream as guitar bands are these days. Although Kurt Cobain's death was widely reported in the NME etc, it didn't hit the headlines much. Many people already had the Nirvana albums so there wasn't any need to buy them again and no downloads / streaming back then so if the local record shop sold out then that was it. And that's one of the key differences between then and now - the record company had to make a decision to release more copies in the following weeks and this would often be seen as crass - although somewhat tempered by just saying they're responding to demand. Now you can stream and download a recently deceased artist while they're still warm. |

It was a huge U.S. hit but only had small success here in the UK... following MJ's death I'd definitely put it up there with 'Billie Jean/Thriller' in terms of popularity. I've seen names like Rihanna and Mariah mentioned in this thread which is somewhat ridiculous... I think in the next 5-10 years... Aretha Franklin Mick Jagger Cher Chuck Berry Bob Dylan Tina Turner All who will see songs go at least top 10/maybe top 5. What a depressing discussion though... |

I just found out that some of Shirley Bassey's signature songs, This Is My Life and Goldfinger were never proper chart hits.
When Dame Shirley dies, chances are these two song can have finally chart impact. |

God, I didn't realise it was that close I wonder if Fairytale of New York would have shot to #1 had (legal) downloads existed back then - certainly it would have been too close to Christmas (and somewhat distasteful) to give it an official rush-release on CD at the time. There's still Shane McGowan and if he died close to Christmas then I think it would stand a fair chance of making it to the top. This post has been edited by zenon: Jun 12 2016, 03:49 PM |

Just remembered Bowie died in early January...had he died a few weeks earlier I could see 'Little Drummer Boy' recharting pretty high, if maybe not beating its #3 peak.
Come to think of it Terry Wogan did a version of that song too! |
