Tesco is joining the vinyl revolution

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertai...n-10481616.html

What does everyone make of this news?

Whilst I'm happy that vinyl sales are increasing at the moment, I am a little worried that supermarkets are trying to muscle in to a market that struggles to survive as it is and may end up putting a lot of small independent record shops out of business.

yes. The supermarkets killed off the record store (and the High Street generally) to a large degree. I don't want to see a piddling token amount of popular vinyl albums leaving the niche ones to the indies when they need a few name albums to draw people in. I went into Rough Trade in London and it was SO fab, just seeing racks of new vinyl and actual physical music.

Hopefully it's just a publicity stunt that won't catch on, the vast majority of people don't buy vinyl and Tesco can concentrate on toilet paper and dead animal factory slave products instead. Or buying in illegally-chopped rainforest timber products. Or screwing milk farmers.

These are facts according to some media sources....

A wee bit of good publicity for Tesco, a wee plug for Iron Maiden, a chance for middle-aged men to get misty-eyed over the copy of Now 11 they got from somebody for a birthday present once, a way to fill space in the Independent.

Not going to start a revolution or anything.

The saddest thing about records in shops now is that they've been sold alongside 12" picture frames for at least the last 10 years.

My record collecting was on halt this year, as my record player has been packed away since January when my room was completely redecorated. I've now got it back out earlier in the week and have resumed collecting as a result! Got Lana Del Rey - 'Born To Die' and Kendrick Lamar - 'Good Kid, M.A.A.D City' today from HMV, two of my favourite 2012 releases heart.gif

Which records have you guys bought this year? ;o

One of my favourite vinyl purchases is Now 22 - quite rare on vinyl as the format was rapidly losing popularity by then (1992) in a dusty charity shop in Oxford. Think it was back in 2009. Cost was £1.

A few days ago the same album sold on eBay for £35.

^ Ooh! ohmy.gif I have Now 1-10 and 16 on vinyl and would love some of the 20s ones. Good find!!

Quickly popped into a charity shop while waiting for the bus in hope of a good find today. In amongst lots of brass compilations, I did find a 7" 'Do The Bartman' record laugh.gif
