BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Chart Forum Quiz Season 4, Q1 2021: Sign-Ups and Leaderboard

Posted by: awardinary Feb 7 2021, 04:30 PM

Having secured permission from chart moderators PeteFromLeeds and DanG, we have the go ahead to start a fresh new chart quiz season for 2021! dance.gif

The season will consist of 12 weeks of different quizzes hosted by different members and volunteers are welcome! cheer.gif

If you would like to host a quiz, then please post here which week you would like to take and what quiz you would like to do. You can do one of the tried and tested formats or if you have your own format explain it to me so it can be considered. Your questions ideally should all be chart/music related.

Quizzes usually last for a week and a results thread will be made once all the answers have been collected after the closing deadline. To start the season I will shortly host a chart Pointless quiz (as a change to my usual Album Cover quiz) and anyone wishing to host something on another week please send me a PM with the quiz and date you would like to have a go!

Schedule:

Week 1 (07/02): Pointless with awardinary [http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=243163 / http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=243412]

Week 9 (04/04): NMTB with JulianT [http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=244672 / http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=244892]
Week 10 (11/04): Family Fortunes with jimwatts [http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=244872 / http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=245097]

For those of you unfamiliar with Quizzes here is an explanation of the main formats from Bré;

QUOTE

FAMILY FORTUNES
(example from last year: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=204253 / http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=204639)
In this quiz, the host asks a series of questions (typically 10 of them) and participants answer each question with what they think the MOST popular response will be. Points are scored based on how many other people gave the same answer as you to each question, so for example if the question is 'name a single by El Chombo' and 15 people responded 'Dame Tu Cosita', each of those people would be given 14 points for that question. Most points wins.

POINTLESS
(example from last year: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=203045 / http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=203196)
This quiz is basically the inverse of Family Fortunes. The host will, again, ask a series of ~10 questions, but here the participants answer each question with what they think the LEAST popular response will be. Points are allocated the same way as in Family Fortunes but here it's the player with the fewest points at the end that wins (so the best answer to a question - a Pointless answer - is one that no other participant answered). There's also the catch that an incorrect answer is penalised by giving the answerer the maximum possible score for that question, i.e. one less than the number of participants (so if there are 31 participants and someone answered the question 'name a winner of the X Factor' with 'Michelle McManus', they would be given 30 points for that question).

NEVER MIND THE BUZZJACKS
(example from last year: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=204254 / http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=204627)
The host uploads onto SoundCloud/YouTube a series of short (usually instrumental) clips from songs, usually about 20 of them, and participants simply have to name the songs, scoring a point for each one they get right, or a half-point for guessing the right artist. There's also often some kind of bonus questions based on the songs on the side for additional points. http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=141164 a quick guide RabbitFurCoat put together wayyy back in the day with some instructions for uploading a round of NMTBJ onto SoundCloud.

ALBUM COVER PUZZLE
(example from last year: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=203684 / http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=204077)
The host makes a collage of cropped sections from album covers, usually about 20 of them, and participants name the albums that they are taken from. Participants get points for each one they get right - this may just be 1 point per correct answer, or a varying number of points decided by the hosts based on how difficult they think each one is to guess. Like in NMTBJ there may also be bonus questions on the side for additional points.

OTHER FORMATS
You are also welcome to try other formats out which aren't listed above! For example, last year we had:-

http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=215009 (courtesy of PeteFromLeeds)
http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=215352 (courtesy of Suedehead)

So you're welcome to propose something brand new or use one of these alternative formats as well.

The leaderboard works by giving 30 points to the winner of each quiz, 29 points to the runner-up and so on. If there are more than 30 participants, anyone outside the top 30 will walk away with nothing. If the host is unable to participate in their own quiz (ie if it's NMTBJs/ACP) or wishes to sit out their own FF/Pointless quiz (hosts are allowed to participate in these, on the basis that they write their own answers before others start coming in) then 'host compensation points' are given by taking the average of their points attained from other quizzes.

If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try my best to get back to you!

Great this is back! Though it means I may not be keeping my title for long... I'll give some thought to hosting something, maybe in one of the later weeks.

Posted by: Mangø Feb 7 2021, 10:05 PM

Can you put me down for week 3 please? Format TBC.

If Bre's doing a quiz this season I think he should pick an early week... for obvious reasons kink.gif

My quiz will be called 'Mango's Quiz of Two Halves' smile.gif

I'm also happy to take a slot in one of the later weeks if there's still gaps (the takeup seems a little slack so far) as I've got a few ideas for a second quiz.

I can confirm that my round will be Dingbats as well, I've started compiling the first few now!

We're actually counting "G" and "D" to this? *_*

Posted by: Mangø Feb 22 2021, 11:30 PM

Even after consulting with Chris I couldn't decide whether to or not but went with it in the end - in any case I highly doubt they'll be scoring points in any subsequent quizzes so they'll be gone from the leaderboard soon enough.

They might be genuine members but it's unlikely. My guess is that they tried to cheat by entering a fake username to find out what the questions were before then entering again with their real usernames, having had time to research the answers. Hope I'm wrong though, would be a shame if that were the case.

haha I thought the same, but seems like a lot of trouble for a game that's just supposed to be fun

Oh that’s a shame if they did that, but thankfully it doesn’t look like it’s impacted the game too much.

They did pretty well if they were doing a trial run though. The real attempt would then need to belong to someone who finished higher than them, which I think is very unlikely. If there had been some unknown users with blank / rubbish answers near the bottom that would seem more suspicious for trial running.

Could just be guest members who don't want to formally sign up to the forum doing it for fun?

I've got a NMTB style quiz almost ready (which I started preparing before I changed my mind and did the Album Covers quiz) so if need be, I could host that for next week's quiz. I've also got my quiz of two halves which I never did, if subsequent weeks need filling. Obviously it would be great if there was a variety of hosts but I'm perfectly happy to step in whenever needed, as for once I've actually got a little more time on my hands at the moment.

You were already third so you're actually a non-mover. It's because there were only 18 entrants so even though you did badly you still picked up 15 points!

Posted by: JulianT Mar 10 2021, 09:22 AM

So close between 3rd and 10th! Assume Mango’s easily 3rd after the compensation points though.

Yeah, my average across the 3 I haven't hosted is 22.33 points so that would easliy take me up to 3rd and only 4 points behind Bjork in 2nd!

Also, Chrissmith would be on an extra 15 points so would go up to 11th as things stand.

I think my name should also be starred Mango! Lots of falling for those who missed out on my round sad.gif

Sorry, corrected that now! And yeah but it's their own fault for not taking part.

Posted by: Jade Mar 12 2021, 10:34 AM

Yup fully deserve to take the hit! I remembered about the quiz after the deadline and didn't think I'd have the time to send in late answers while working. In hindsight I should've just sent in one answer or something as that alone would've been worth it laugh.gif ah well, apologies, will try and manage my time better.

Posted by: dan::G Mar 12 2021, 10:49 AM

I had absolutely no clue for the Dingbats round I'm afraid so I'll take the fall.
Think I should do reasonably well for NMTBJs though so I could still be top 10 by the end.

Posted by: Mangø Mar 12 2021, 11:15 AM

There's been very few entries for NMTBs so far, so anyone who enters is pretty much guaranteed points even if they only get 1 right!

(and I will try and enter this current quiz as well sorry x)

Where am I on the leaderboard?

You had fallen to 37th after your disappointing performance on the previous quiz but as you can see you're now back up to 24th!

Posted by: JulianT Mar 22 2021, 11:21 AM

Seems a bit unfair that Jim shouldn't at least claim last place points for his own quiz, but up to him!

Amazed to be so high for now, even if various key participants are on ACR. happy.gif

Posted by: jimwatts Mar 22 2021, 11:44 AM

Just to confirm that I'm more than happy to pass up any compensation points from my own quiz, as I'm genuinely humbled that people took so much of their time in participating in it, whether they originally intended to or not.

I'm not declaring myself out of the running for this series by the way, I very much want to defend my title, even if I have to do it the hard way biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mangø Mar 22 2021, 12:26 PM

Still think Jim's being unnecessarily harsh on himself but it's a very noble gesture - should make the title race very interesting!

Another call for hosts, the next five slots are all empty so can we have some more sign ups? I've got lots of ideas that I haven't used up in previous quizzes so I'm sure I can put something together but I don't think anyone wants me to host the remaining five weeks in a row and it would be better if there was a greater variety of hosts and quizzes.

Not sure if you saw my earlier post - I’m nervous about hosting but don’t mind doing something relatively unchallenging to put together and tried and tested like Family Fortunes (or even a Pointless Fortune mashup like there was last time).

I've just looked something up in a dictionary laugh.gif yeah "humbled" was too strong a word, it sounds too much like ashamed, which isn't what I meant, more that I'm very grateful and also happy that people put so much time into my quiz, and passing up my compensation points was basically a 'thank you' to those who took part.

Anyway, I might consider hosting a Family Fortunes round, but not for a few weeks, I need to come up with some more questions before committing.

Still looking for a host for the final quiz of the season next week. If no one else comes forward I can scramble something together although that would be my third quiz of the season and I'm not sure how people would feel about this, especially given that I'm doing quite well on the leaderboard and could potentially win?

I think you’re very likely to win now anyway, which will be well deserved. I’m just delighted to be in the Top 5 as it’s the first full season I’ve played. So I don’t think it matters from that point of view if you host another, but it would be nice if you didn’t have to obviously. smile.gif

I've decided I'm just not very good at these quizzes. Apart from the albums covers one where I got lucky and worked out the connection and it all came together, I've scored low every other time.

I mean... woe is me and all that... 😂

Don’t be so hard on yourself I say! Some like Pointless you need a ton of luck on and others like dingbats and anagrams suit certain brain types. Also people on here have crazy levels of knowledge - I sometimes set quizzes for work and I wouldn’t dream of making the music round anything like as hard as the one I’ve set this week, even for teams of 6! Plus I think you get better at quizzes the more you do. smile.gif

OK, I have about 8 Family Fortunes questions and I'm sure I can think of a few more by Sunday, so I can do that as the last quiz of the series.

What day/time is best for results? If it's on a Monday night I'll go with that, although with a Sunday night deadline if there's a flurry of last-minute entries, that's not ideal with work the next day laugh.gif Maybe results on the Sunday evening?

I know nothing has been officially discussed yet, but I just thought I’d take the opportunity to do a quick survey if there was any interest for another quiz season, and, also if you would be prepared to host one quiz as last time round we struggled for hosts.

It is of course at the chart moderators discretion, but I didn’t see the harm in asking the question first to see what interest there is.

I’d be happy for these to resume (as I did mention at the time Q4 would be best to bring in Season 5) - would you like to host the sign up and leaderboard thread again awardinary/Mango?

I’m happy to be involved again but I found having some assistance helped. I know Mango has a lot on, perhaps Pete would be willing to be a co-host this season if he’s agreeable?

I’d be happy for these to resume, I enjoyed having a go at the last few quizzes when I first joined BuzzJack.
