WHAT? Like I knew he had health problems but I had no idea it could/would ever amount to this cry.gif absolutely awful news & probably the worst musician death for me in terms of how close I was to their music was and how young he was.

Literally beyond words.

Posted by: Iz 20th April 2018, 05:48 PM

He's made so many of my favourite dance songs of the decade, I'm really shaken.

Wake Me Up and The Nights are going to be heartbreaking to listen to now. And that's just to start.

Posted by: Midge 20th April 2018, 06:02 PM

If I had to pick a favourite it'd be "I Could Be The One" with "Seek Bromance" a close 2nd but so so many great tracks to choose from, that I'd give at least a 9/10. Any music that can make you feel good things is good music and Avicii provided us with that in abundance.

I've heard otherwise actually; a heroin addiction, though I have no idea of the reliability of that source.

Hearing Wake Me Up actually feels a bit dark and especially tragic in these circumstances given the song's themes of looking back on life and being uncertain where to go sad.gif

I first started looking up the official chart online on the BBC Radio 1 website in late 2010, and out of all the songs in the chart 'Seek Bromance' really stood out for me, as being a song with great emotion to it. I wondered who this Tim Berg person was, and I was sad he apparently never had a follow up. Eventually I found out he did have follow-ups and it was Avicii!

I love the remix he did of Rapture too. Way better for me than the iio version.

He said, "One day you'll leave this world behind

Agree with others, completely out of the blue, RIP.

I think gooddelta mentions it earlier in the thread but in 2013 he could do no wrong, I don't necessarily think Wake Me Up has aged as well as I thought it would because the market for these songs became so saturated, but it really was absolutely massive. He has such a brilliant back catalogue, such a shame.

Levels has got to be his best song surely though!? the amount of dance artists that got inspired by that song must be insane

Posted by: Rob S 20th April 2018, 08:30 PM

I'm completely speechless to see this news. I legit thought this was one of those hoaxes at first but shit at it being real. I feel really sad about this as he still very young sad.gif

Wake Me Up, I Could Be The One & Hey Brother were his best for me. I liked Levels to some extent too.

I've spent the evening re-listening to his back catalogue.. Wake Me Up got me a little bit. Great song and I forget just how massive it was at the time. Silhouettes another big tune, did nothing for me at the time but I found love for it a few years ago. He really was on major form between 2011-2013.

sad.gif Silhouettes is heartbreaking as well - a song all about positivity and looking forward, to now know that'll never happen.

This, Levels, Silhouettes and I Could Be The One were all favourites of mine (the latter especially I have BIG memories of with friends), I'm just in shock that we'll get no more of that signature Avicii sound.

if you guys can, I'd recommend watching the True Stories documentary, it really shows a bit what is like being an international superstar DJ and the negative impact it can have too

I watched it earlier on the Swedish tv website, it's in English/Swedish with Swedish subtitles but it's easy to understand
it's geo-blocked so you need some s√ftware to mask your IP, like Hola or similar
https://www.svtplay.se/video/17478602/avicii-true-stories

think it's really worth watching

Posted by: danG 21st April 2018, 10:57 AM

absolutely devastating and shocking news. it's so sad to see Avicii gone at such a young age. 28. mellow.gif so many more years of potential.

it is truly amazing the number of people, musicians or otherwise, he has inspired, myself included; and how he revolutionised underground and mainstream electronic dance music, and commercial music in general. all the amazing songs he created in the last ten years, many of which are amongst my all-time favourites. he is without question my favourite producer/composer, and only perhaps Calvin Harris has come close to achieving such greatness in this genre. he had such a talent that will be sorely missed. the uplifting lyrics and euphoric melodies of his music will get me through this but it will always be sad knowing that he will no longer be able to do what he loved most. I had the privilege of watching him do a live DJ set as part of his 'True' tour in London, which was one of the best nights of my life. of course he had retired but I always had in the back of my mind the hope that he'd eventually do a comeback tour or even a festival appearance, and now that definitely will never happen. sad.gif

I will be sure to watch the documentary, I believe it is on Netflix, I know that he suffered from alcoholism and health problems, and the fame was perhaps too much for him to handle, maybe this will explain it more. likewise with the death of Amy Winehouse many years ago I thought he had recovered somewhat and was starting to get better and enjoy life a bit more now, so this really comes as a shock. I very much hope we will get to hear some of the unreleased music he has, but only when the time is right and if he'd have wanted to release it.

I will miss him always. thoughts go to all his other fans especially those on this forum, his family and anyone who knew him personally. sad.gif

RIP.

Posted by: Math ☂ 21st April 2018, 11:29 AM

I felt compelled to log in for the first time in a while because of this news. One of the main reasons I joined Buzzjack was to participate in the dance forum and my favorite artist at the time was Avicii. I've been a huge fan of him since Seek Bromance and it just feels surreal. I just want to say thank you to Avicii for inspiring me and thank you for everybody who's impacted me in one way or another on here.

And of course, thank you so much for the tribute Dan. I'm happy to hear you are doing ok. We haven't talked in years but you were the first person I thought of when I heard the news.

Posted by: Dobbo 21st April 2018, 11:31 AM

Lovely tribute there Dan (and glad to see you're alright & posting again). One of the most disappointing things for me is that I never saw him perform live & like you expected he would eventually return in a festival appearance etc. It's kinda made me think how I should always jump at opportunities of the sorts for seeing artists perform as you never know when they'll stop/be unable to and then you've missed the boat sad.gif

Posted by: Dircadirca 21st April 2018, 11:43 AM

Much respect Dan. When I first joined this forum, you were possibly the first poster I really recognised as a regular face, thanks in no small part to your vocal fandom of Avicii's music. Glad to hear that you got to see him live at one point, often the chance can just never arise until it's too late.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 21st April 2018, 12:12 PM

Dan that’s a really very lovely and touching tribute. It’s clear for anyone to see the positive impact he’s had on you and many others in our generation.

Posted by: uoʇxǝ◖ 21st April 2018, 01:29 PM

I’m still finding it so surreal that this has actually happened... he was only 28 years old and, no matter what he suffered through, that is far too young for anything like this to happen to him sad.gif

Dan I feel so much sadness for you as well as respect, Avicii is one of those legendary names in music which only come about once in a lifetime and has inspired so so many people around the world. His impact on the music industry alone will always be felt and I just... can’t believe it.

Music Video for I Could Be The One was such a theme for my department during my work in Afghanistan heart.gif. It felt like it was dedicated to us and our work life (12 hours a day, 7 days a week). We couldn't wait for the time to escape to vacation lol.

Posted by: gooddelta 21st April 2018, 02:56 PM

Have been listening to his music all day. It's easy to understate how much I was obsessed with everything he put out in 2013. Forgot how much I love Always On The Run, which was a bonus track on True.

His albums were great - True especially so - but he had so many wonderful deep cuts and one-off singles that never made it onto an album, many of which Midge has covered in his playlist.

Posted by: uoʇxǝ◖ 21st April 2018, 03:00 PM

Fade Into Darkness has a special place in my heart, the sample is perfect and lyrically is such a touching song that I fell in love with the first time I heard it.

"This world can seem cool and grey
But you and I are here today
And we won't fade into darkness
No, we won't fade into darkness
Nothing to fear but fear itself
We'll be okay just keep the faith"

Heaven is another song I adore from his (amongst many) heart.gif if only it had ever gone a release

An old bf of me passed away as it started getting promoted so it reminds me of euphoric sadness - really powerful record tbh

what a talented, ambitious, beautiful man

from ‘levels’ to ‘wake me up’ to the various remixes

it’s such a sign of a quality musician when 15 different posters have 25 favourite songs by that one artist; be it remixes, originals or live tracks

aviici looked forward in such a positive, grandiose, fabulous fashion; those melodies, those breakdowns, those songs

forever a KING.

QUOTE
Two days after the prolific Swedish DJ Avicii — born Tim Bergling — was found dead at the age of 28 in Muscat, Oman, the country’s authorities have officially ruled out any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. Per a CNN report, the Royal Oman Police carried out two postmortems and confirmed there was “no criminal suspicion” at play, with further information likely emerge in the next few days. The police also confirmed his parents, sisters, and brother had arrived in the country and are “completely devastated.” Avicii, whose constant stream of Top 40 hits dominated the charts over the past decade, was open with his addiction to alcohol during the peak of his fame, ultimately choosing to retire from touring in 2016 to focus on his health.

“The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time,” his representative said in a statement on Thursday. “No further statements will be given.”

It's hard to say whether it's good to know that or not; just hopefully he died painlessly and peacefully tbh

I agree, and I also was wondered if he was involved in some violent death as Oman is very unsafe iirc and they use physical torture as punishment!!!

Are you sure you don't mean Yemen which is the next door country? I thought Oman was safe enough, although the very warm weather there this time of year in that part of the world could be a possible health danger of course, especially to those with underlying health issues I would think.

What I meant by unsafe is that the country has strict laws, rules, death penalty etc etc.

from wiki:

Oman is an absolute monarchy in which all legislative, executive, and judiciary power ultimately rests in the hands of the hereditary sultan, and in which the system of laws is based firmly on Islamic sharia. Although a report by the U.S. State Department, based on conditions in 2010, summed up the human rights situation in the country by asserting that the government “generally respected the human rights of its citizens,”[1] the details in the report itself strongly indicate otherwise, and several international human-rights groups have described the state of human rights in Oman in highly critical terms

Posted by: danG 22nd April 2018, 04:31 PM

I do wonder what he was doing in Oman, it's not the type of country I would like to visit anyway. I don't believe the cause of his death has anything to do with him being there though.

One of the biggest names in dance music of the last decade, Avicii was EDM's first truly global superstar.

From the beginning of the 2010s right up until his untimely death in April 2018, his brand of uplifting house found success in the charts, leading to two Grammy nominations, collaborations with Coldplay and Madonna and a worldwide arena tour - the first DJ to pull off such a feat. Below are his biggest tracks in the UK, according to Official Charts Company data. Check out Avicii's complete UK chart history here.

10. Seek Bromance
Before Avicii, the DJ went under the name Tim/Berg, a shortening of his real name Tim Bergling. His UK breakthrough hit Seek Bromance was originally a hit across Europe in its instrumental form, while the addition of uncredited vocals by Amanda Wilson (famous for her work with the Freemasons) saw it enter the Top 20 in the UK, peaking at Number 13.

7. I Could Be The One (Nicktim)
Avicii's first Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart arrived in February 2013. A collaboration with Nicky Romero (the Nicktim in the title is a combination of their first names 'Nick' Rotteveel and 'Tim' Bergling) I Could Be The One was the song that confirmed Avicii's global superstar status, reaching the Top 10 in 14 countries. Despite 509,000 sales in downloads, it finishes seventh on his overall Top 10 as it pre-dates the streaming era, which started in summer 2014.

5. Lonely Together
Avicii's most recent single, released in August 2017, already places fifth on his Top 10 and is the producer's most streamed song in the UK, currently on 55.5 million plays. Lonely Together was one of six songs on a self-titled EP released by Avicii last year, marking his return to music after announcing his retirement from touring the previous year. The EP was meant to be one of three parts of his third studio album.

1. Wake Me Up
Wake Me Up was a worldwide smash on arrival. It was the fastest selling single of 2013, with opening week sales just shy of 267,000. It spent three weeks at the top of the Official Singles Chart and went on to be that year's third biggest seller. It's one of the best-selling singles of all time in the UK, ranking 43rd with pure sales of 1.5 million, elevated to just over 2 million when streaming is added.

Wow 2m for "Wake Me Up"! Totally deserved though. What an iconic anthem.

Shame "I Could Be The One" is so low but I guess 500k+ is fantastic for a proper dance anthem - it was before Avicii went stratospheric.

Posted by: Dircadirca 26th April 2018, 01:46 PM

Does anyone know how far back the 500K streaming points goes for "Wake Me Up", though streaming has come a long way in 5 years, it's kind of crazy to think it's been overtaken by "Lonely Together" when it was once the most streamed song of all time on Spotify ohmy.gif

Posted by: The Snake 🐍 26th April 2018, 01:55 PM

Hopefully 'Lonely Together' won't be the last newly released Avicii track to enter the charts. Hopefully he had made at least one track intended for the second EP that can be released.

I hope so too. Perhaps "Friend Of Mine" will get a push given it has a music video. I've actually seen it's now number 1 in Dexton's chart and is likely to shoot up to the same position in mine as I'd coincidentally been charting it over the past month; threw it in my playlist when in Australia because I thought "I need some more Avicii in my life". It's so uplifting wub.gif

That rings a bell - they included streaming from summer 2014 and backdated it to the start of that year I believe for 'total sales'! It was still pretty popular at the turn of the year and "Hey Brother" was high up the charts too I believe.

Posted by: Dircadirca 26th April 2018, 02:05 PM

Ah thanks. Was thinking it had to be somewhere between the original release of the track and when streaming was introduced to the charts, but didn't know when.

Something to do with ACR maybe? I don't think it affects the dance chart, and it would make sense that Lonely Together would have been hit more by streaming than Hey Brother.

Posted by: Dobbo 27th April 2018, 07:52 PM

Perhaps, but I would have thought all his tracks were on ACR? Guess it's just the Dance Chart being its typical weird self.

Listening back to his discography, Seek Bromance I think has 100% cemented itself as my favourite song of his, it's just SO euphoric wub.gif

Posted by: Rush 27th April 2018, 07:52 PM

I was thinking it might be that the dance chart doesn't use ACR, but then I came across this from the W/C 12/01/2018 dance chart:

1. MK - 17 (#8 on the official chart)
2. Marshmello feat. Khalid - Silence (#28, while on ACR)
3. Selena Gomez & Marshmello - Wolves (#17)
4. Jax Jones feat. Ina Wroldsen - Breathe (#14)

5. CamelPhat & Elderbrook - Cola (#46, while on ACR)

Neither 'Wolves' nor 'Breathe' were on ACR (at least going by the highlighting http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=208751), but 'Wolves' was higher on the dance chart, while 'Breathe' was higher on the official chart.

It can't be that the dance chart is sales-only, either, as 'Breathe' was #9 on sales while 'Wolves' was #28 (and in general it would probably look really different if it were sales-only).

So I don't know, but I'm intrigued so hopefully someone does!

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 27th April 2018, 07:57 PM

Does it include other industry information, like airplay?

Posted by: lewistgreen 27th April 2018, 08:03 PM

It's a combination of sales/streaming as far as I'm aware, with streaming taking a massively dominant effect. ACR is not used at all on the dance chart or any of the other charts aside from the UK Singles Chart.

Posted by: Rush 27th April 2018, 08:17 PM

Maybe it's still compiled with a 100:1 ratio? That could explain 'Lonely Together' and 'Wolves'.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 27th April 2018, 08:45 PM

Forgot about this banger of his, it will be sad whenever adverts with this song are played again:

Weekly and total sales for Avicii's tracks:

26 Avicii [Wake Me Up] 15,708 (2,086,902)
36 Avicii [Levels] 11,992 (1,014,182)
43 Avicii [Hey Brother] 9,683 (1,085,825)

Didn't realise Levels was so close to being a millionaire and I suppose it broke the million unit mark this week (as it would've done a bit more than 12k units without ACR and at 1:100 ratio), brilliant to see.

As we approach the first anniversary of Avicii's death, his family have announced that on April 20th 2019 the Tim Bergling Foundation will be launched for suicide prevention and awareness.

Proximity have uploaded a special mix this week too.

Posted by: danG 17th April 2019, 09:50 AM

QUOTE
This Saturday (April 20) marks one year since the untimely death of Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, aged just 28.

Since then, almost 2 million of the Swedish DJ and producer's records have been consumed by fans – with 1.9m total combined sales across all his singles and albums, including equivalent streaming sales.

Avicii’s unmistakable dance anthems originally took the world by storm in the early 2010’s, with his tracks still regularly spun in clubs across the globe.

During his life, Avicii had two UK Number 1 singles with Wake Me Up and I Could Be The One, plus a further seven Top 10s. Both of the DJ's studio albums reached the Official Albums Chart Top 10. See Avicii's full Official Charts history.

A new posthumous Avicii single SOS - featuring vocals from Aloe Blacc, who famously sang on Wake Me Up - is heading for a Top 10 debut on this week’s Official Singles Chart (April 19). His posthumous album Tim, out on on June 6, will feature a further 15 previously unreleased songs.

In the UK, Avicii's songs have notched up 239 million plays in the last 12 months, bringing his all-time streaming total to 916 million.

Wake Me Up, Avicii’s biggest single overall, continues to prove the most popular, with 310,000 combined sales this year alone, including just over 47 million streams. The EDM-country single debuted at Number 1 in 2013, staying at the top spot for three weeks and finishing as the third best-selling single that year. The song’s all-time UK streams amount to 168 million.

In the week following his death, Wake Me Up made the biggest impact on the Official Singles Chart, re-entering at Number 26.

In second is Lonely Together ft. Rita Ora, released just a few months before his death, notching up 250,000 combined sales since last April including 29 million streams. His breakthrough hit Levels takes Number 3, with 193,000 combined sales.

Poignantly, Without You ft. Sandro Cavazza places fifth despite being one of his lower-ranking Top 40 singles, peaking at Number 32 in 2017. By comparison, nearly all of the songs in the Top 10 peaked at Number 6 or higher, apart from Addicted To You (10) which reached Number 14.

Meanwhile, I Could Be The One with producer Nicky Romero and featuring uncredited vocals from Noonie Bao, is in eighth. It was the producer's first Number 1 hit back in 2013, debuting at the top and spending a total of 13 weeks in the Top 40.

Just finished watching this very touching documentary looking at his illness and how people kept pushing him to keep touring. Very sad.

Posted by: lewistgreen 22nd April 2019, 11:42 AM

Finally I get to see it! Will stick it on later today

Posted by: lewistgreen 22nd April 2019, 03:18 PM

Well that was a heartbreaking watch especially seeing how much touring crushed him as a person.

Another anniversary mix for us

Its so sad to believe he has passed 2 years, so young and so talented. I wonder will a greatest hits get a release a some point, he has a great collection of songs, if it happens i think a strong 1 cd collection would be the best.

The vast majority of his audience uses streaming so I can't see a GH being put out, there's little point in releasing those for artists who don't attract a lot of CD and download purchases.

I've done a quick GH comp on Spotify if anyone's interested, anyhow. I've gone through all the albums (and EP) today though. heart.gif

Intrigued. Especially as 2011 Avicii was top notch

A previously unreleased mix from Avicii will be broadcast on SiriusXM’s BPM channel on 24th May.

As part of the dance music channel’s live-streamed DisDance Festival from 22nd - 24th May, a mix recorded by the late EDM star in 2011 will be broadcast exclusively on the Sunday.

Interesting article on a forthcoming mobile game in tribute to Avicii’s music.

And further to this, there was news last month of a museum to open in his name in Stockholm in 2021! ohmy.gif

A game is one thing but opening an entire museum in his honour does seem a bit much.

The bonus edition of 'True' is now available on both Spotify and Apple Music (perhaps others too but not so easy to check those), featuring five songs which were until now exclusives – Apple exclusives 'Long Road To Hell' and 'Edom', Amazon exclusive 'Always On The Run' and Spotify exclusives 'All You Need Is Love' and 'Canyons'.

In other news it appears that the track he worked on with Cam titled 'The Otherside' will be released on October 30 as part of her album of the same name. A version of it leaked earlier this year which I really liked so I'm intrigued as to how the official version will sound.

Tim has been nominated for Best Dance Artist and Best Dance Album at the Billboard Music Awards.
These were meant to take place earlier in the year before covid postponed it, which is why he has been nominated well over a year after the album release.

Great news that the True bonus tracks are now streaming. Always On The Run is one of my favourites from the era <3

Nervo have confirmed their 10-year old Avicii collab "Enough is Enough" will be released finally this summer under the name "Don't Give Up on Us"!

I was only listening to some Avicii songs at the weekend, and its so hard to believe that someone so young and talented is no longer with us.

omg! heart.gif

for context, they’re now working on finishing the song, hopefully it won’t be a full on remix but just a little polish of the production. the original demo is available on YouTube.

Avicii and Nervo also worked together on Nervo’s song You’re Gonna Love Again.

Posted by: dan::G 12th May 2021, 05:08 PM

They've also just released a Greatest Hits compilation on Spotify titled 'Live A Life You Will Remember'. Albeit quite a pointless one as it is only six tracks long.

Couple of pieces of news;

Posted by: awardinary 20th April 2022, 11:34 AM

So it’s that time again, Avicii day, where we remember a great name in Dance music;

What one Avicii song are you choosing to play today?

I’m going to listen to his last Top 40 hit Heaven, especially given that it was featured on Now 103 that I recently reviewed in the 2000’s forum.

4 years already, jeez sad.gif

I still don't think I've ever been so shocked by a public figure's passing as I was by this. sad.gif

Posted by: awardinary 20th April 2022, 01:25 PM

A question I’d really love to hear Dan answer when he reads this… if Avicii was still alive today, what sort of sound would he be working on and would we have had another album by now? Who would he have collaborated with too? Becky Hill? RAYE? Ed Sheeran?

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 20th April 2022, 01:58 PM

I cant believe its 4 years already, so sad and was such shocking news. Another young person gone far to soon. I think if he was alive today he would have definitely done a track with Becky Hill, maybe another track with Rita Ora, personally i would have loved him to have also done a track with Ed Sheeran. Mabel and Raye are 2 other potentials i would think he may have worked with aswell.

Posted by: Brer 20th April 2022, 04:48 PM

Can we not taint Avicii's legacy by hypothetically dragging him into the hellscape of the current commercial dance scene xx

(I joke)

((but also I kind of don't))

Impossible to say but I imagine he would've continued along the more mellow songwriter-focused tracks path that we heard on 'Tim'.

Perhaps he could've been a little bit inspired by melodic house given that genre's rise in prominence ever since his passing (would make way more sense than slap house or festival tech house to name two other styles that took off big in the last 4 years).

I certainly like to think he wouldn't have gone down the generic hit-chasing path anyhow like Guetta, though a Becky or Raye collab wouldn't have surprised me given the Rita collab. I don't think he'd have worked with Ed though.

Also this. Although no other public figure's passing could've been more shocking for me given how big a fan I was/am of his. Crazy that it's already been 4 years and I still remember it well seeing this news.

His discography is still unrivalled by any other.

Posted by: MandaliCow 20th April 2022, 09:25 PM

4 years feels very quick, isn't it? If Avicii was still here, he would probably do a lot of things with other Swedish producers and musician: at least one producing collaboration with either Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman or Mike Perry; letting small artist like KAAZE to remix his single (before Sigala's "Melody" even existed); and probably making hits with Zara Larsson, Tove Lo, Dr. Alban, even ABBA.

Posted by: Riser 22nd April 2022, 03:20 AM

Not sure if I've missed it in this thread, but where can I find his Kacey Musgraves collab?

Yesterday marked 34 years since his birth. This week also marks the 10th anniversary of "True" (released 13/09/2013) which has aged incredibly well still.

Avicii’s 2015 remix of Zac Brown - Beautiful Drug out tomorrow.

it will be the first official Avicii release since 2020.

It's already an EDM-ish song anyway, so should be interesting!

Honestly, not the first impression I expected from you. laugh.gif

Still, I'm curious on how the biased EDM Golden Era fans / anti-modern EDM people would react to this.
Nothing's bad with this, but saying it better than any new dance/electronic songs is such a bold statement.
