BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ One/Two hit wonders of the 2010s

Posted by: MyKindOfLove Feb 11 2015, 06:28 PM

As we are midway through the 2010s, who would you classify as One/Two hit wonders in the UK singles chart so far?

The obvious ones to me are:

Goyte (nothing since "Somebody I Used To Know")
fun. (I know the whiney lead singer has done a couple of solo tracks with Pink and Eminem)
Magic! (For some reason, I can not see a follow-up to "Rude")
Sam Bailey (Yes she had a rigged #1 and a #1 album, but unlikely we will see any more singles)
Yolanda Be Cool (Bar *that* song (made even more famous by "The Inbetweeners" first film), just a rumoured follow-up)
Sam and the Womp (Nothing since the annoying "Bom Bom")

Any more to add?

It was in no way rigged, what a stupid thing to suggest.

I can see Nico & Vinz ending up as one-hit wonders, the follow-up track didn't do anything at all, not even supported by Radio 1.

Sadly, Alyssa Reid is also a one-hit wonder cry.gif more due to her ridiculous label than anything else.

Posted by: Liаm Feb 11 2015, 06:33 PM

DAISY DARES YOU sad.gif Flopped out of existence with her non charting second single Rosie after Number 1 Enemy made #13.

Posted by: MyKindOfLove Feb 11 2015, 06:34 PM

I think with Allysa Reid that was a blessing - that track was ruined.

Yeah I do agree about Nico and Vinz, I think as well they were lucky in one way as the track was released in the summer. Daisy Dares You - yes so much promise - wonder what she is doing five years on. On the dole perhaps?

Carly Rae Jepson (Call Me Maybe, Good Times)

Don't forget Tonight I'm Getting Over You! Not a smash but still technically a hit heehee.gif

Wasn't there another she had "Loving You" or something that made the low 30s?

Yes biggrin.gif I think we both posted the same time.

Icona Pop is another one. "I Don't Care" and a follow-up. Their album was *very* samey.

Posted by: SKOB Feb 11 2015, 08:00 PM

It was titled "I Love It"

Posted by: ETH▲N Feb 11 2015, 08:03 PM

You could have Owl City sad.gif with 'Fireflies' & 'Good Time'.

Posted by: MyKindOfLove Feb 11 2015, 08:32 PM

Military Wives - and they have a 100% record.

Psy is the other one - "Gangham Style" and "Gentleman" plus James Arthur - he probably sings at UKIP conventions after the homopohbia. Shame as his album was rather good.

Another is Mr Probz - unless he pops ups again, can't see any long term career.

Posted by: JosephStyles Feb 11 2015, 08:54 PM

James Arthur is a three hit "wonder" tbf, or four if you count top 100 as a hit as I'm fairly sure the follow-up to Recovery went top 100 (Bray can hopefully shed some light here).

Posted by: ¡bré! Feb 11 2015, 09:03 PM

James Arthur has 5 top 100 'hits'. The first three singles obviously, the fourth single 'Get Down' which scraped #96 on the album release week but did nothing on its single release, and a #97 hit featuring on a cover of 'Wrecking Ball' by Alonzo Holt. The latter two are only remotely hits in a technical sense (not even that if you insist on the 'only top 75 counts' restriction).

Posted by: Blank Slayberry Feb 11 2015, 09:08 PM

Elyar Fox. We have "Do It All Over Again" peaking at #5, "A Billion Girls" almost making top 10, then nothing.

Probably couldn't take the mass hatred he has on Buzzjack tongue.gif

She is in some punk band or something I recall sad.gif

The poor guy got dropped sad.gif

Well MAGIC! have a track Let Your Hair down in the schedule but idk if it'll chart unsure.gif
I also think I saw Yolanda in the schedule but same above. S&TW were supposed to be doing something with Zeppelin thinking.gif
N&V had their In Your Arms only enter the combined at 90 something, but I'm not sure they'll return any time soon sad.gif
I'm not sure if Owl City is a one hit wonder yet, since he's had 3 top 100 hits and 3 101-200 hits, as well as MDM with Chicane as Adam Young kink.gif

Also

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 11 2015, 09:41 PM

I would say Kate Nash. Yes, she had another 3 top 40 hits, and one stayed in the top 100 for 10 weeks, but none of them had success even close to Foundations.

Each and every one of her singles deserved to be #1 sad.gif

And obviously Lilly Wood & The Prick. No follow-up to Prayer In C, and judging by how ghastly that song was, that's a very good thing.

Well iirc it was a fairly old track and only remixed recently, so yeah, even more doubtful their return to the chart.

D'Banj is a massive one surely!? Oliver Twist was a 2012 Summer smash but since then he's been overshadowed by Fuse ODG. I've heard a couple of his songs, but nothing that would chart.

Loick Essien too - he had a #2 in 2011 with 'How We Roll' but since he's been dropped by his label.

Others could be Secondcity, Dot Rotten, K Koke, Ben Pearce & Meridian Dan. All charted a minimum of top 20 before their follow ups tanked and I doubt any of them will get there again.

Possibly but IMO DBanjs track is rather forgetful and to be fair missed the top 10...

Nah, it got to #9 in May 2012. Felt big at the time and unique (first African sounding song in ages/ever). Since, we've had Fuse ODG so it doesn't stand out as much as it did then.

Two big hits, and nothing else close to that level. Come on, I'm a huge fan of his and I can admit from a commercial point of view he has two hits and that's it.

Posted by: Blank Slayberry Feb 12 2015, 02:53 AM

Adding Dragonette considering "Outlines" has smashed in the top 10. Two hits, both features. Obviously not the case in Canada but I'm talking about OCC facts.

Shame considering "Pick Up The Phone" and "Let It Go" were so addicting.

Posted by: Riser Feb 12 2015, 03:28 AM

Mike Posner only had two hits in the UK. If I remember correctly his second single 'Please Don't Go' was snubbed by Radio 1 and completely missed the top 100, and it took Cher Lloyd's 'With Ur Love' to bring him back.

Karmin is a one-hit wonder with no UK chart hits since 'Brokenhearted'.

Lady Antebellum has had one UK hit and another song that peaked at #78. They are of course more successful in the US.

Also, Foster The People sad.gif

Posted by: dhwe Feb 12 2015, 04:55 AM

Aloe Blacc: "I Need a Dollar" (#2), "The Man" (#1)

Though a footnote must be made for Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" (a different version of which Aloe also charted with at #69).

He's had a really interesting career trajectory, to say the least. It's cool that he finally earned a top-ten back home, but that came and went.

Iyaz - #1 with Replay & #3 with Solo

Cover Drive - #1 with Twilight & #4 with Sparks (actually forgot they had a top ten with Lick Ya Down so forget them tongue.gif)

Gabrielle Aplin - #1 with The Power Of Love & #6 with Please Don't Say You Love Me

Couple of 2 hit wonders I remember.

All of these had other top 40 hits (Iyaz got to #40 with 'So Big' and top 40 with features on Mann's 'The Mack' and Charice's 'Pyramid', Cover Drive had 'Explode' and their feature on Far East Movement's 'Turn Up The Love' and Gabrielle Aplin had 'Panic Cord' (and wasn't far off with 'Home')) so not the best examples tongue.gif

Ah OK with Aplin I thought Panic Cord WAS the track that missed that top 40. And I never knew Iyaz had a 3rd top 40 hit!

Loreen, Conchita and the Common Linnets won't be seen in our charts again, as it was a Eurovision bounce.

Sak Noel - had "Nini" which was "Loca People" with different lyrics that flopped.

Posted by: fiesta Feb 13 2015, 01:16 PM

Lumineers ho hey

Posted by: N-S Feb 13 2015, 05:42 PM

Alexandra Stan (follow-up to Mr. Saxobeat hit #56)

Edward Maya (no UK follow-up to Stereo Love)

Posted by: Mango Feb 16 2015, 10:49 AM

Anyone get the feeling Echosmith will be joining this list soon? As much as I like 'Cool Kids', I can't really see them getting a follow up hit.

Yeah that's their only hope really, but I doubt even that would do anything (would like to be proved wrong though cos it's a good song)

Posted by: MyKindOfLove Feb 16 2015, 03:42 PM

Oh there is a chance some of the ESC artists may get a follow-up, but unlikely. Conchita is the safest bet if she sings another song like Emmelie from 2013 did in the interval.

I forgot about Alexandra Stan and Edward Maya.

Sidney Samson and Gramophoznie are two from 2010 - the latter one of the first Serbian acts to chart! No follow-ups since, unless they have been performing under different names.

Pepper and Piano and Emma's Imagination from that SKY talent show - nothing was heard of again after that from both of them.

Aggro Santos - yes he's a three-hit wonder, but was dropped from his label after false accusations which he was cleared off.

Parade - a Top 10. a #38, a flop album - got dropped. Unless some of these re-surface solo or in different groups and guises, they're finished.

Posted by: MyKindOfLove Feb 16 2015, 03:53 PM

Oh and we can now officialy add Sam Bailey to our list, as she has been dropped. How long until Ben Haenow appears on here?

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Feb 16 2015, 03:57 PM

Storm Queen - never heard anything from then after 'Look Right Through'.

Posted by: Rush Feb 16 2015, 04:07 PM

In Storm Queen's defence, it wasn't his version that did well anyway.

Actually not entirely true - Piano sans Pepper and Emma's Imagination have dropped off the face of the Earth but Pepper sans Piano had a #22 hit featuring on Dizzee Rascal's 'Scream' (one of the supposed official songs of the 2012 Olympics). Emma's Imagination did actually have a fairly decently charting album as well though had no further singles success after the two top 10s during the show's run.
