    Andrew's Review
Now That’s What I Call Music! 72 or Now 72 was the first volume released in 2009 and featured 43 tracks and 8 UK #1 singles. From this volume we were introduced for the first time to artists like Lady Gaga, Alesha Dixon (as a solo artist), Tinchy Stryder, Shontelle, N-Dubz, Alexandra Burke, Taylor Swift, Jason Mraz, Noisettes and Daniel Merriweather (as a lead artist).

The greatest omission from this era was leaving out the #1 single by Leona Lewis which was a stunning cover version of the Snow Patrol hit Run. Along with this hit, other artists like Beyoncι, Same Difference, Will Young, Kings Of Leon, The Pussycat Dolls, Coldplay and Jordin Sparks all got overlooked in favour of other hits from the era.

However, this would be the only occasion in the series we would hear music from Kid Cudi, T.I., Steve Angello, X Factor Finalists 2008, Metro Station, MGMT, Kevin Rudolf and Vanessa Jenkins & Bryn West. It’s worth noting too that in the rare case of T.I. there were two tracks on this volume where he was the lead artist, but no other appearances for the rest of the series.

Artwork Rating: 7/10 Very Good
A fresh spring design for this volume making good use of a golden orange logo set against some floral patterns with the odd sighting of greenery between the gaps. It’s a little bit too bright for my liking but still very good and seasonal.

Disc 1 Favourite: Kelly Clarkson – My Life Would Suck Without You
Probably her best single to date with such an infectious chorus which is likely what got her a UK #1 single at the time. Really love the energy in this track.

Disc 2 Favourite: The Killers – Human
“Or are we dancer” was a lyrical mystery for a long time as it never made sense in context of the chorus. Still, one of my personal favourite songs from The Killers.

Disc 3 Tracklist:
(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Leona Lewis – Run 5:14 {1}
2. Kings Of Leon – Use Somebody 3:51 {2}
3. Nickelback – Gotta Be Somebody 4:12 {20}
4. Coldplay – Life In Technicolor II 4:05 {28}
5. Oasis – I’m Outta Time 4:10 {12}
6. Will Young – Grace 4:37 {33}
7. Beyoncι – Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) 3:13 {7}
8. Britney Spears – Circus 3:12 {13}
9. Miley Cyrus – Fly On The Wall 2:31 {16}
10. Rudenko – Everybody 2:50 {24}
11. Basshunter – I Miss You 3:47 {32}
12. Same Difference – We R One 3:53 {13}
13. Jordin Sparks – One Step At A Time 3:25 {16}
14. The Pussycat Dolls – I Hate This Part 3:38 {12}
15. Chris Brown feat. Keri Hilson – Superhuman 3:38 {32}
16. N-Dubz – Papa Can You Hear Me? 4:02 {19}
17. Rihanna – Rehab 4:54 {16}
18. The All-American Rejects – Gives You Hell 3:34 {18}
19. Franz Ferdinand – Ulysses 3:13 {20}
20. White Lies – To Lose My Life 3:11 {34}
21. Ladyhawke – My Delirium 3:40 {33}
----------
Total time: 1:18:50

Overall Rating: 6/10 Good
It’s hard to find many songs I don’t actually like from this volume, however, to this day I’m still very much disappointed that Leona Lewis, whilst already an artist on this volume, was not permitted to have Run included on this compilation. This is a rare case in the series where in fact a total of 3 artists have double appearances all on the same volume. Alesha Dixon, The Saturdays and T.I. (and maybe Daniel Merriweather you might add) all took up extra disc space than other artists did, and perhaps that should not have been allowed to happen in order that some of the big omissions made could have been included. Also the gimmick of having the now long forgotten X Factor Finalists 2008 close out Disc 1 is a joke in itself.

Andrew's Best 5 (as of February 2018)
1. The Killers – Human
2. MGMT – Kids
3. Kelly Clarkson – My Life Would Suck Without You
4. Kevin Rudolf feat. Lil Wayne – Let It Rock
5. Lady Gaga feat. Colby O’Donis – Just Dance

Andrew's Worst 5 (as of February 2018)
1. Katy Perry – Thinking Of You
2. U2 – Get On Your Boots
3. Shontelle – T-Shirt
4. P!nk – Sober
5. X Factor Finalists 2008 – Hero

I love NOW 72. I always remember the NOW Team announcing the track listing by putting the single covers of the songs on Facebook and they included the "Single Ladies" cover. Cut to the actual release and Beyonce was nowhere to be seen! I always imagine they replaced Beyonce with Duffy/Pet Shop Boys to fill up space.

disc 1 rank:
1 Show Me Love [the definitive version in my eyes, proper banger of life]
2 Right Round [biggg tune]
3 Day 'n' Nite [love the drop in this, we got nothing quite like it ever again]
4 Just Dance [deservedly a huge breakout hit for her]
5 The Fear [always enjoyed the lyrics of this one especially when I eventually heard the rude version]
6 Live Your Life
7 My Life Would Suck
8 The Loving Kind
9 Hallelujah
10 Can't Get Over [always forgot she had a 2nd hit, this wasn't quite as good as the first though]

disc 2 rank:
1 Human [their best song, shame it got overshadowed by Mr Brightside in future years]
2 Kids [it's near-impossible to not love this song!]
3 Omen [the first I heard of The Prodigy, great that a song like this could be a top five back then]
4 Heartless [Kanye!! need I say more]
5 Let It Rock [loved this at the time, not aged brilliantly but still a bit of a tune]
6 Love, etc.
7 Greatest Day
8 Dead and Gone
9 Breakeven
10 Don't Upset The Rhythm

worst:
1 Thinking Of Poo [awful! awful!]
2 Mad [rest of these aren't necessarily bad, just boring]
3 Get On Your Boots [they were way past it at this point]
4 T-Shirt
5 Issues

I can get past 'Hero' for being a charity record and 'Islands' for being... iconically awful. *_ (looking forward to that in the plug session)

(aside, quite baffling that 'Run' and 'Use Somebody' both missed the cut, what was up with that?? oh and this was seemingly the start of Beyonce being really funny about being included in these)

Dead & Gone had a #4 peak, not #15 kink.gif (unless this was released prior to that peak, I can’t remember, either way it’s still worth noting tongue.gif)

As a whole there are a lot of great songs on here and too many to list, but my Disc favs are My Life Would Suck Without You & Human wub.gif A big joint second though: The Fear, Show Me Love, Sober, and Dead & Gone laugh.gif

I imagine Run wasn’t added because that & Hallelujah were (and are) her two biggest hits so maybe the label was trying not to give the two selling points of an album away on a Now album? It’s happened before, most recently with Ed Sheeran only allowing Castle & Galway on Now 96 & 98. Use Somebody should definitely be there, it’d fit nicely between The Killers & The Script On Disc 2

You’ve confused two artists there. Leona Lewis was included on this volume, but with the more forgettable single Forgive Me.

Went with Show Me Love for the first album (the 2009 remix is brilliant with the dramatic sounding percussion). Although I was tempted to go with Just Dance as my fave for the first CD because its an excellent dancepop song, I prefer it to Poker Face.

Went with Omen for the second CD. Rain on Your Parade is my second favourite from disc 2, amazing with the production!

Oh my! I remember this from the time from the music channels, iconic and I remember my dad found the title of the song and the artist name humorous!
