memorable and incredibly addictive dance track... or a two a penny ancient boyband track (from a boyband whose track record was indeed damn awful)...
I'm quite surprised the poll isn't MORE one-sided. |

I actually quite like a fair few Westlife songs (including this one, not their best but it's decent enough), they get too bad a rap here, it's just there's no way anything in their discog comes close to comparing with the classic that is 'Better Off Alone'.

Alice deejay plus I loved the album. Same here, one of my favourite dance albums, I remember picking it up on import some time before it was officially released here. It seems very unusual for an act to achieve five top 20 hits off a debut album and then never release so much as a follow-up single, let alone another album. I really can't think of another act with this sort of track record in fact... |

I voted for Alice Deejay but I adore the Westlife track too. People are doing the absolute most in here acting as if everything Westlife did was shit. Yes they had some crappy covers and MOR ballads towards the last half of their run but they also had some amazingly crafted pop songs throughout their discography. Wrong. They are the worst manufactured karaoke band in the history of music. Their awful personalities and egos mixed with the worst chart manipulation ever makes them even WORSE than their bad music. |

And with this flag of yours you should know that they are the EU act with the most UK #1's... |

The only chart manipulation that happens is now when you can simply add a song to certain playlists and have it chart as high as you want.. back then you should go out (in the rain) and buy the physical discs, and that week 400 more people bought Westlife's single.

That's true, my sister and I used to affectionately refer to it was the Worst Record of the Year for that reason. Safe to say Mandy and My Love were very much not the best records of their respective years. The big November ballad/No.1 album/disappearing for the rest of the year cycle/rinse and repeat formula became very tedious indeed. Amazingly they got away with it for nearly a decade!! |

It's odd, some of their worst singles went to No.1 - Mandy and The Rose in particular but Queen Of My Heart, I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun and Unbreakable weren't really all that either. And some of their best got nowhere near - When You're Looking Like That didn't even get a UK single release, Hey Whatever was really good and ended up at No.4, What Makes A Man became notorious for being the song to end their streak but imo is a much better ballad than a lot of their other singles, especially the covers. Which just goes to prove chart position is dictated by 'popularity' in a given moment in time and not by quality of the song produced a lot of the time. |
