Is Nicki Minaj really the queen of rap?

I thought it would be an interesting one for some people to cite their views on the question of is she the queen of rap? It was joked about in Side To Side and there have been things said generally about Nicki but now it is your turn to vote and discuss.

I've gone with no. I'd definitely put her up there as one of the most notable rappers of all time for instance, but I do think she is still relatively new to be considered such titles.

definitely! Cardi B may be bigger right now but for all we know she could turn out like Iggy Azalea and fade away in a few years. Nicki's been around long enough to warrant her 'Queen of Rap' title. She's also already the biggest selling female rapper of all time, I believe?

What competition has she got? Many, many features, clever wordplay and a great businesswoman to boot, plus she has respect in the industry from women and men alike. Maybe Missy or someone formerly held the title, but Nicki has blazed a path for female rappers and is definitely the queen today I would say, top of her game.

Nicki doesn’t have much/any competition though compared to the big names of say the 90s, so in terms of what is popular today I would say yes. But of all time, there’s many others who I’d put above her in terms of impact and relevancy.

Cardi B is big but only in the past year and she has a very “love her or hate her” type of personality going on, same goes for her music too.

Her solos, yeah? But her big hits are often features. e.g. Bedrock, Bottoms Up, Dance (A$$), Side to Side, Swalla, The Way Life Goes, Rake It Up. Going by sales.

Even her pop songs she raps on e.g. biggest hits Starships, Anaconda and Super Bass.

I don't think there is a queen of rap in general? Missy, Lil' Kim, Lauryn Hil etc paved the way but none of them had the success and longevity of a 'queen' like Madonna or Mariah. Neither has Nicki.

She's amongst the best but I would say her legacy/success is rooted more in being one of the first rappers to really show the world that you can be a popstar rapper. She blurred the lines.

I feel like if you suggested that Nicki Minaj was the Queen of Rap to the average Joe on the street, they'd probably laugh in your face. I say that as a fan of Nicki, but I think people see her as a bit of a jokey rapper, like her lyrics are usually quite nonsensical and tongue and cheek, like the male equivalent of Pitbull.

I think I agree with blacksquare and say there's not really a Queen of Rap. Missy Elliot is one I have heard suggested as claiming such title, usually in response to when someone says Nicki is, but see blacksquare again for why she doesn't quite compare to other 'Queen of ____'.
