The BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be crowned on 18 December. I assume the shortlist will be published in the next couple weeks or so. After being crowned world number one tennis player, last year's winner Andy Murray is now the favourite. Will he win again? Who else will be on the shortlist?

What about the other awards? Leicester City are favourites for team of the year. The Olympic / Paralympic team must have a chance although it depends on how they define "team" this time.

I think we can assume Sam Allardyce has no chance of getting Coach of the Year.

Posted by: Dobbo Nov 6 2016, 06:22 PM

Yeah think Murray's a definite again. Tennis is always looked at so favourably in this contest & in particular given we haven't had a British player so highly ranked in many decades. Also he's doing it at the end of the year so it's fresher in people's minds!

Should be some big names from the Olympics of course, Jessica Ennis coming for yet another 3rd place perhaps?

The irony when the award is 'PERSONALITY' and Andy Murray is void of any personality whatsoever heehee.gif

Posted by: Dobbo Nov 6 2016, 06:36 PM

Yeah it's a very misleading title. It is just "who's done the best at sport this year"

Posted by: Martyn Nov 6 2016, 06:39 PM

I personally think Konta is more deserving than Murray from a tennis perspective. Considering he has gone up all of one place, and she has shot into the top 10 which no one thought she'd do.

Posted by: Mack Nov 6 2016, 06:40 PM

A Top10 should look like this for the nominations:

Gareth Bale
Alastair Brownlee
Mo Farah
Jason Kenny
Andy Murray
Adam Peaty
Nick Skelton
Sarah Storey
Laura Trott
Max Whitlock

Again it will be because he won Wimbledon, got to No1 in the world and won Olympic gold.

No Johnnie Peacock? sad.gif

The timing is certainly in Murray's favour. Advantage Murray to coin a phrase tongue.gif

Either Sarah Storey or Johnnie Peacock for me although I do feel he may miss out.

People have been saying this ever since Nigel Mansell won the trophy in 1986. It never gets old, never.

Murray's achievements can't be denied so he'll probably triumph again. Especially since tennis is a very popular sport among voters. Mo Farah had better get second place though as he has now achieved more than any British Track and Field athlete ever and, Murray aside, I really can't see anyone else getting past him apart from Brexit-era voters that is.

Thought maybe Jack Laugher might have made it on there after his achievements in diving and seeming quite popular, but can't knock anyone on the list.

Would like Andy to have a record setting third win and I suspect it's pretty likely. Some of those nominated for the Olympics might split the vote?

Posted by: Doctor Blind Nov 28 2016, 10:25 PM

I would like it to be Mo, but I suspect it'll be Andy Murray again.

Posted by: awardinary Nov 28 2016, 10:28 PM

Jamie Vardy! heehee.gif

Posted by: Soy Adrián Nov 30 2016, 05:04 PM

Should be Mo but it looks like he's destined never to win it. At least there aren't any other athletes in it this time, so he may well come second.

Posted by: Mack'sXmasSack Dec 1 2016, 03:46 PM

Jamie Vardy for how he played during Leicester City's title winning run is probably why he was nominated.

Posted by: richie Dec 2 2016, 08:20 AM

Mo Farah should have won last year but for some reason the World Athletics Championships are never held in as high esteem as the Olympics. I guess the viewing figures are a lot lower. I think it's actually tougher to win the Worlds as there are more top athletes there - the Olympics only allows a certain number of athletes per country to compete.

Although Murray was deserving last year, in hindsight the public should have waited until this year to give him another award. Mind you, Farah still wouldn't have won last year in any case as he perplexingly failed to make the rostrum.

Posted by: Soy Adrián Dec 2 2016, 08:54 AM

There's restrictions on the number of athletes per country in the Worlds as well I think. From memory it's three, and the reigning champion of the event can go as a fourth.

Posted by: richie Dec 6 2016, 12:19 PM

Ah, well there you go. Still largely the same pack of athletes in the finals after all is said and done.

Posted by: Houdini Dec 7 2016, 11:27 PM

Leicester City should win the team of the year award but their shambolic Premier League title defense so far might stop them from doing so.

Posted by: JingleBellsMack Dec 18 2016, 05:46 PM

Top3 for me should be:

Mo Farah (winner)
Andy Murray (2nd)
Alastair Brownlee (3rd)

Posted by: JingleBellsMack Dec 18 2016, 06:28 PM

Andy Murray 1-7f
Alistair Brownlee 7-1
Nick Skelton 16-1
Mo Farah 33-1
Gareth Bale 50-1
Laura Kenny 50-1
Jamie Vardy 66-1
Max Whitlock 150-1
Jason Kenny 200-1
Nicola Adams 400-1
Adam Peaty 400-1
Dame Sarah Storey 500-1
Danny Willett 500-1
Kadenna Cox 750-1
Kate Richardson-Walsh 750-1
Sophie Christansen 750-1

And the winner is...... the dullest person in the entirety of Scotland!!!!!!!

Yet again the personality? Goes to Murray again. surely 3 times is the limit for someone to win it.

Posted by: JingleBellsMack Dec 18 2016, 10:44 PM

Simone Blies won Overseas Sports Personality.
Leicester City won Team of The Year.
Claudio Ranieri won Coach of The Year.
Michael Phelps got Lifetime Achievement Award
Ellie Robinson won Young Sports Personality.

Glad Blies won the Overseas award fully deserved.

I feel like it should be. He's won it after his first Wimbledon, after the Davis Cup and now after becoming the world no.1 (alongside a second Wimbledon and defence of his Olympic title). Where can he go from here? (career grand slam I guess if he can achieve it..)

Posted by: Wombanta Claus Dec 18 2016, 11:25 PM

Very pleased Nick Skelton got top 3, I admittedly didn't know much of him before the Olympics but what an incredible achievement, even if it was at the expense of Mo Farah. Predictable winner but not undeserved, gonna need someone new to rise at some point though as it's getting a bit stale.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Dec 18 2016, 11:33 PM

Utterly predictable and although well deserved, with so many amazing nominations this year with some fantastic achievements - notably Mo Farah - I was hoping we'd have a surprise. Oh well/

Posted by: Houdini Dec 18 2016, 11:51 PM

None of the Leicester players and their manager Claudio Ranieri looked too happy to win those awards, it was fully deserved of course but it feels so weird to see due to their current form this season.

Maybe I'm wrong in thinking he's one of the greatest athletes of all time?

If he were to win all 4 Grand Slam titles in the same year then yes he'll be nominated again.

Yes it was a predictable winner and he did deserve it with winning Wimbledon, becoming No1 and the defence of his Olympic title.

Incredible achievement from Nick Skelton to finish in the Top3. Fully deserved.

If Farah does the double again next year surely he'll be recognised for those achievements. or possibly snooker player Mark Selby getting an nomination if he were to win the Triple Crown (UK, World & The Masters).

An absolute landslide as I expected, many congrats to the most prolific SPOTY winner of all time! Here's to next year of hopefully world domination.

Posted by: Soy Adrián Dec 20 2016, 11:23 AM

Travesty as usual.

I don't think he will. I mean, I hope he'll do the double yet again where it matters (a triple double of worlds) but he won't win SPOTY as somebody will probably excel in a more popular sport.

In a way it's great as I don't pay for Sky or BT sports but still get to see all major track and field events on Eurosport and the BBC. I guess that sweetens the fact that Mo will probably only finally be recognised when he rightly is given the lifetime achievement award in a few years.
