SPIEL:

Our top 2 are both spooky and enchanting bangers, we originally had Terra Avium as our favourite from semi 1 but Espen has ended up being our favourite quite comfortably after sounding even more incredible on repeat listens, perhaps in our all-time Espen top 3 alongside As Animals and Team Rockit so thrilled that it qualified despite its awful semi-final draw, and yas at us probably putting it in an early lead if these votes are being presented in order of receipt xx Aeroche's Scatman John 90s bop takes the bronze medal, while the top 5 is completed by an absolutely gorgeous track from our faves Jadakissnia and the best BJSC drum n bass entry for quite some time from Aelandor, the vibes ~~

Then double figure points to the demented weirdness of Pupok too cos why the hell not tbh, PC Music on point this month even making a dog song sound good. Another #instrumentalbloc choon from Séyetana takes our 9 points, second time in a row we've given them 9 ~ Our 8 points could have so easily been 18 (ok actually maybe 15, Espen was that much of a tune), 'Ambling Alp' is an old favourite in Persephonia but we decided to dock it just a little bit to make way for a few more discoveries, still the most points we've given Azure to date and another brilliant indiepop choon from Yeasayer if not quite as perfect as 'O.N.E.' x Another epic beauty from Bergersen et al takes 7 points for Kluminican Republic (woulda been more if it was longer!!!) and sneaking into our top 10 is an 80s vibe from S DNLD.

#00274E were originally ranked just low top 20 after our first listen of semi-final 2, jumped up to 12th on second listen and now has ended up getting 5 points from us in the final, an absolutely huge grower (on par with Dobago, RIP), reminding us a bit of Best Coast but a little more electronic-y. More synthy goodness from FARC and Suedeonia (feat. a little help from quen and saviour Lorde) also take a few points, final comeback kids Skall poke in with their Clean Bandit-before-they-went-too-mainstream sounding track and YES, Cor Lupus get their first points (well, point) of the year with another big grower of a track which was outside our top 10 of semi-final 1. There's only so much we can resist a good afrobop after all.

Lotunia fall frustratingly just short of getting points from us in their debut contest (after they were just outside our points in the Asian spinoff as well eek! sorry NocheLuna ), Bhangra also just a tiny bit short of their first points from us, and two more big growers from Ojnoj and St. Burbia also make it as official commiserations. If we wanted to go crazy and list a billion commiserations, the next few tracks which were also really good were République d'Ashton, Thelonia (yet another huge grower, originally second last for us in semi 2!!), Oslol and Unovia.

Yeah it's not as if we were ever not gonna support one of our favourite former artists, but a great debut from Lotunia that ran it quite close so massive thanks for that one.

18 Lotunia > Ágy – Arvedávgi
I didn’t imagine I’d be giving this much to Lotunia’s debut, but through this and their spinoff entries they’re showing themselves to be a very welcome off-the-wall presence. Arvedávgi, quite apart from being a very inspired Sami tune, has some INCREDIBLE pop undercurrents running through it, and that little key instrumental is so addictive to listen to. Definitely my highlight from this contest and I’m so glad it managed to qualify against all odds as it means I get to do this. Welcome to the contest NocheLuna!

15 Desbuanda > Lucy Camp - The Heart Dies
I had a very powerful listen with this in the semi (those lyrics are really quite incredibly emotional <3) and yet it didn’t make my top 2 then. It has done here, because it’s continued to get more and more powerful, the quick rap of Lucy Camp cutting through the downtempo instrumental and getting more and more urgent as the track progresses. You can really FEEL this sort of music and it’s exactly the sort of rap I love seeing in BJSC.

13 Kluminican Republic > Two Steps From Hell – Archangel
Of course, I bloody adore all Two Steps From Hell stuff, in fact I need to look into getting more albums that just Miracles. This is much more typical fare for them than Miracles is and it’s not quite as standout as that (because so little is) but what this does that Miracles doesn’t is it really makes me feel energised and pumped up and I can never say no to any track that does that.

12 Quintessa > Leah - Met Jou Klere Aan
This is really the spiritual successor to Atemlos Durch Die Nacht isn’t it? Well, the Afrikaans version of that, but it’s close enough and that schlager feeling is really apparent throughout the track. Perfect little pop stormer, I’ve had this easily as one of my go to plays of the month.

11 Unovia > Utada Hikaru - Simple & Clean (Ray of Hope Mix)
I love any and all versions of Hikari/Simple & Clean. You can feel the little soundtrack-esque touches in the very background of the track that are straining to break through the remix and that makes it even better for me, a huge tune that I guess is my horse out of tracks that realistically have a chance of sneaking the win. So g’won Unovia.

10 Terra Avium > felicita - a new family
Iz has detected harsh vocals contrasted with cute high-pitched vocals. This is exactly the sort of ridiculous excellence he is always seeking through BJSC. Many points wing their way to Terra Avium for this.

09 Trifoski > PWR BTTM - Answer My Text
Things I love unconditionally: anime girls and turn of the century-esque pop-punk. As I had never heard of the band before this I am not connecting (though of course it has sadly marred it a little) this to what’s happened, as a standalone track it’s easily been one of my highlights of the contest.

08 Jadakissnia > Hugar - Waves (feat. Arnór Dan)
Another contest, another Jadakissnia grower. This got a couple of points from me in the semis and was initially outside. And I had it on my radar from the start because So Close is one of my favourite older BJSC tracks in existence. Arnór Dan has a beautiful voice.

07 Suedeonia > Bleachers - Don't Take The Money
I had thought Bleachers were getting bigger or something, except I wasn’t paying attention, I have seen their name a lot more since they were a Greenfroze DNQ that one time. Don’t Take The Money is a fantastic pop song though, let’s have this as a big success for Suedeonia indeed.

06 Espen > ATB - Ecstasy (MYSTXRIVL x SOKOS FLIP)
Wall-to-wall trance sound is always very welcome and something I wasn’t expecting from ATB, so that blindsided me a little. Espen continue a fine run of form.

05 Tinnmark > Vigiland - Friday Night
Rhyming glasses with asses normally gets you on my shit list, but Friday Night is a really addictive song and I can see why it got through against expectations now, this is the sort of song people will chuck points to without realising it.

04 Persephonia > David Starfire - Big Chillum
#instrumentalbloc, I said this sounded like a tune when it first ended up on shuffle without even knowing it was a Persephonian entry. I was subsequently shocked (and then not shocked when I thought about it a little bit more). Beautiful little instrumental.

03 Ojnoj > Jessie Reyez - Gatekeeper
Female rap has done WELL this BJSC, hasn’t it? I almost always have it as my least favourite genre in any given contest but with the focus on spoken rap that Desbuanda and Ojnoj have, and the pathos that’s apparent in Jessie Reyez’ voice, it’s spellbinding.

02 Taahino > Gjan - Wasn't Easy
Gjan’s previous two entries I noted for her unusual voice but not until Wasn’t Easy has this been matched with appropriate production and now it finally sounds as I wanted her to do all the way back when Tattoo got entered.

01 Aelandor > Nu:Tone - Tides (feat. Lea Lea)
I initially didn’t like this, it sounded too normal – if you’re surprised this is a criticism I give to something, that’s just something I do. Then I started LOVING it, the vocals and instrumentals grew on me, and matched with each other really well to produce a classy track. Then it kind of got a bit pushed down by a lot of other tracks and only ends up with a point. Hope it does better than 32nd though, it’s still a really cool track.
