121. Tom Walker – Leave a Light On (2018)
122. Two Steps From Hell feat. Merethe Solvedt - Compass (2015) just took a listen and sounds like another great song from them? is there a specific album or playlist you'd recommend of theirs? they just have literally way too many songs for me to ever go through but I like most of what I hear (of the Thomas Bergersen stuff anyway)
123. Owsey, Jernalism & Resotone – I’ve Been Secretly Falling Apart (2015)

148. Dua Lipa – Be The One (2016)
149. Seven Lions, Illenium & Said The Sky feat. HAILENE – Rush Over Me (2016) this was the first track I heard of Haliene's actually, it's great particularly by standards of modern dubstep

I don't know what you're talking about whistle.gif (Mentioning 2013 and the 1975 in the paragraph before confused me haha)

Both this and my BJSC entry, Miracles (still to come x) are taken from the 2014 album also called Miracles, it's largely very dreamy and emotional, so if you like both of these, then I reckon you would like most of what's on that album too. I agree they have SO MANY songs, there's a lot I haven't heard yet nor any albums, but I do try and check out any new releases that come up on my recommended, that album was still the one that got me into them though even though it's not usually reflective of the epic, upbeat classical they are known for.

Sorry for the slight pause, resuming today!

101. Underworld – Caliban’s Dream (2012)
102. Emmelie De Forrest – Only Teardrops (2013)
103. Daydreamer – Skyscrapers (2017)
104. Vermont - Majestat (2014)
105. The Midnight feat. Nikki Flores - Jason (2017)
106. U.S. Girls – Woman’s Work (2017)
107. Sigma – Nobody to Love (2014)
108. Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds – Ballad of the Mighty I (2015)
109. Arcade Fire – Everything Now (2017)
110. DVBBS & Borgeous - Tsunami (2014)
111. Hang the DJ – Dark Dark in the Night (2014)
112. Disclosure feat. AlunaGeorge – White Noise (2013)
113. Coldplay – Adventure of a Lifetime (2015)
114. The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk – I Feel It Coming (2016)
115. Prides – Out of the Blue (2013)
116. Porter Robinson – Language (2012)
117. Anoice feat. Takahiro Kido, Yuki Murata & Films – Nothing There (2019)
118. Merely – Backdraft (2017)
119. Tame Impala – ‘Cause I’m a Man (2015)
120. Nick Mulvey – Cucurucu (2014)

One of the more surprising additions here is probably Nick Mulvey. In truth, I hadn't really heard of him at the time and have indeed not checked him out that much since, but Cucurucu is a really lovely song with some beautiful organic composition and longing lyrics, reflecting that of a child's longing for the past, it's lovely getting a poetic and thoughtful song in the charts every so often and it's that that I miss a lot. Other kinda-but-not-really hits here are Everything Now, the most recent Arcade Fire song, the album got a lot of hate but I don't fully agree even though the more complex compositions and more subtle lyricism were missing this time, the song itself though is a dark song but you wouldn't know it with the swirling synths and singalong chorus, it's rather clever. Ballad of the Mighty I is a great example of the more moody and slowly unfolding ballad that he does excellently, a track that increases in intensity and depth as it goes and a highlight from him. Out of the Blue was a song I first heard in Unknown Pleasures on here before they became more well known, and while I haven't really liked their other stuff, I do love this, a great synth line and a marching beat throughout and a Bastille-esque vocal makes for a great combination. I've been constantly meaning to check out more Tame Impala as everything I've heard has been great, 'Cause I'm a Man being one of those that moves slowly while creating a great synth-laden soundscape with the ethereal vocals making a trance-like atmosphere that is really quite wonderful, shout out to Let It Happen as well which just missed out.

There are quite a few big chart hits here as well. Language was my first introduction to Porter Robinson and though he has better to come, he certainly is wonderful at creating dreamy and beautiful atmospheres with his various aliases and we certainly see that here with the exploding synths and beautiful melodic piano and vocal section in between the song. I think I ranked I Feel It Coming well below Starboy initially but this has definitely grown on me much more, here the robots really take over in the second half and give a real unique edge to this sultry and murky R'n'B number. Adventure of a Lifetime is one of the best songs Coldplay have come up with with this new pop sound, taking a little hint from disco, this is a head-bopping, fast-paced number that nonetheless has their trademark stadium sound. The second of Disclosure's three jewels in their crown is this glorious duet with AlunaGeorge, it's subtle flashing synths are well paced throughout, fitting around Aluna's quite ghostly vocals, gives a real distorted and intriguing sound which reflects the 'White Noise', really fantastic. Finally, Nobody to Love was pretty much inescapable in 2014 for me but it's a good thing it always sounded great, it's excellent piano melody and vocal sample alongside some epic drum'n'bass is a beautiful effect and it still sounds excellent even if their newer singles have been constant diminishing returns. Finally, an unlikely hit from Underworld doing the 2012 Olympics soundtrack. That was one of the high points of the decade for me and the music was wonderfully done and reflected that well. I haven't listened to Caliban's Dream in so long but I'll always cherish it for those memories and for being an excellently composed piece of music complete with whistling, a children's choir and hopeful yet quiet vocals.

From the song contests, Backdraft is a great synth ballad that is enhanced with a wonderful use of a bagpipe. One of Aeroche's best, shame it was one of the few that wasn't a big smash x Dark Dark in the Night is a very curious little oddity with a beautiful animated video and a creepy, bedtime storyteller vocal that grows more distorted as the song goes on which creates a wonderful effect and has kept me coming back to it over the years. Tsunami did go on to cross over and be a hit in different countries, including here with a bast*rdised cover with Tinie 'Passed it' Tempah, if that's the only one you know, please listen to the original instrumental as it's a world away from that. A wonderful build up of urgent synths and drums that would be the perfect track for a mutiny. Woman's Work is an epic, constantly unfolding seven minute ballad with screaming strings, angry vocals and a choral backing that really doesn't let you go over it's runtime, I was so sad this flopped as it's still amongst my favourite entries. Jason is another striking of gold by The Midnight, another duet with Nikki Flores, with each complementing each other excellently as it basks in a synth and epic sax led atmosphere, more of come from them soon. We have another rare 2019 entry here with Anoice with his various friends who are all part of rico label that specialise in ambient Japanese classical music, there's another example coming from films later, but this collaboration is a beautiful slight post-rock tinged song that builds from operatic vocals to harsh drums to gorgeous strings and culminating in a stunning climax. It's probably my favourite BJSC entry of the year and I'm glad it was a reasonable hit. Finally, while it's not a Buzzjack song contest, Only Teardrops is easily my favourite Eurovision song of the decade with it's authentically Scandinavian ancient flutes and drums complementing her soft vocals, it's extremely catchy and is that rare hit that has stayed with me throughout the decade.

Finally, Skyscrapers is another fantastic song from Daydreamer and one I have gone on to prefer to the song I sent to BJSC. It's rather difficult, being very Porter Robinson-esque instead of slowly building and rather than that being very moody, this is full of euphoria in it's outburst of synths that just soars once it hits, it's a real beauty and always lifts my mood. But I do have one more slowly building moody track here with Majestat, a song I discovered way back in 2014 and it took me a long time before I found an appropriate contest to send it to. It's a wonderful builder starting off with ambient marimba beats before the synths gradually enter and it begins to unravel in a wonderful way, yet it keeps those three main keys throughout. Worth a listen for sure~

And we're into the top 100! We'll now go in groups of 10 until the top 50 (so less typing for me hopefully kink.gif)

91. Glass Candy – Warm in the Winter (2011)
92. Coldplay – Every Teardrop is a Waterfall (2011)
93. Kids of the Apocalypse – Masters of the Sun (2013)
94. FM-84 – Arcade Summer (2016)
95. Skrillex – Bangarang (2012)
96. Olafur Arnalds feat. S O H N – Unfold (2018)
97. Nayo Hiiragi - Requiem (2016)
98. Saor - Hearth (2017)
99. Illenium feat. King Deco - Reverie (2016)
100. Kishi Bashi – I Am The Anti-Christ to You (2015)

Some of my favourite BJSC discoveries in this section. I Am The Anti-Christ to You is a heartbreakingly beautiful baroque-pop tale accompanied by a gorgeously animated video, I seriously challenge you to not burst into tears at the two of them combined, I've attached it, let me know x Then we have, rather neatly, one entry each showing my allegiance to the #SeyeJadaTerraPhonia voting bloc, it's difficult to believe Arcade Summer didn't come out at least nearer to the 80s as everything about it is so 80s to the point it should soundtrack Stranger Things, the chilled synths spark and flourish throughout creating a glorious atmosphere that are perfect for any early evening stroll, Requiem similarly builds a wonderful soundscape but instead through frantic, raging trance beats, creating one of my favourite 'high energy' tracks to listen perfect for the gym, and Hearth is an incredible mix of post rock and celtic instruments and chanting that over eleven minutes, doesn't let up, it's quite the epic that should be played loud to all the Scottish Highlands, I like it even more than my own post rock entry now and it ALMOST ranks as my favourite Persephonia entry ohmy.gif

Elsewhere, the final of three for Illenium is here, Reverie is similar to the other two but the soothing and light vocals of King Deco really make this and added to the comforting melodic dubstep beat surrounding it and lyrics assuring you that things will get better, it's a really uplifting listen. Unfold is another beautiful string-accompanied, piano instrumental accompanied by the 'oohs' from the soothing voice of SOHN, while I am wondering if that worth the credit, however it still adds to the beautiful ethereal and twinkly atmosphere of the track. On completely the other end of the scale, Bangarang is absolutely bonkers, with loud, random drops coming from just about everywhere but the quirky vocals, and addictive riff that comes with the track makes it ever so endearing and I've come back to it a lot this decade.

Masters of the Sun was my first glimpse of Kids of the Apocalypse (KOTA) and as with Empire, was an enjoyably different piece where automated vocals and a creepy children's choir combine to make an ominous, environmentally conscious song that leaves an impact long after you've listened, keep fighting the good fight guys. Every Teardrop is a Waterfall started out just being a 'nice enough' song from Coldplay but over the years, has grown into a big favourite. Its great serene electronic pop-rock sound and Chris Martin's ecstatic delivery make it so wonderful to beheld, and finally Warm in the Winter which I discovered some time after 2011, but that's apparently when it dates from. It's a great seven minute electro-pop stormer with some glorious synths and string combinations constantly swirling with some rather odd yet endearing shoutouts from Glass Candy. It seemed to be made as a live performance with how much they 'sing' in it, but it's highly enjoyable and so easy to lose yourself in those synths.

91. Glass Candy – Warm in the Winter (2011) Giving this a listen now, the vocals are... interesting but the tune is very nice! don't think I can get through all 7 minutes of it though
102. Emmelie De Forrest – Only Teardrops (2013) A really powerful Eurovision winner! Didn't strike me as much as it has you but still something I enjoy going back to
107. Sigma – Nobody to Love (2014)
108. Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds – Ballad of the Mighty I (2015)
109. Arcade Fire – Everything Now (2017)
110. DVBBS & Borgeous - Tsunami (2014)
112. Disclosure feat. AlunaGeorge – White Noise (2013) Such a fun dance track, don't think I'd ever heard anything that similar to it when it came out so it sort-of blew my mind!

I hope you did finish listening to it as the last part is the best!!11 (kink.gif)

81. Rudimental feat. John Newman – Feel the Love (2012)
82. Sleeping at Last – Hearing (2016)
83. Grimes feat. HANA – We Appreciate Power (2019)
84. Mat Zo & Porter Robinson - Easy (2013)
85. Arctic Monkeys – Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
86. Haerts – Wings (2014)
87. Anna Meredith - Nautilus (2016)
88. Robin Schulz feat Lilly Wood & The Prick – Prayer in C (2014)
89. Justin Timberlake – Mirrors (2013)
90. Pendulum – Watercolour (2010)

It's strange listening to Watercolour again now as when I really stanned it, I was still at college and things were just so different to how they were now. But time passes and I still enjoy this a lot, it's not a classic but it's some great drops, a pounding drum'n'bass riff and some shout-along refrains. Quite sad we haven't had any other new material in ten years despite them reforming from their initial split, but here's hoping that comes in the 2020s. Mirrors was, for me anyway, the last really great song by Justin Timberlake, it is quite the epic charting in at eight minutes, but it earns it as Justin's vocals are really pained and high reaching and the majestic backing track really fits the scope they were going for and the quiet last part where the strings calm down and we have his quiet contemplation which does also add to the heart of the track, a great track, just a shame at what came after this era. I credit Robin Schulz at using his new found chart powers to promote a song by an unknown folk duo dealing with destruction to the world and questioning of their fate, as it's culminated at one of the most unexpected and beautiful big hits of the decade, his production is subtle and doesn't disguise the power of the lyrics and the track allows the vocals to tell the story, which works really well. We also have Arctic Monkeys' big hit of the decade and I certainly can't argue with this as it's a great slow builder with a catchy chorus and a murky atmosphere. They've been a little hit and miss this decade, but this era was a good one. Their most recent era was perhaps a bit of a surprising step back to muted territory, but Four out of Five was pretty cool. The last big hit here is Feel the Love, the days before Rudimental were boring as sin, this thankfully remains excellent. The organ is so wonderful and works great with the drum'n'bass beat and John Newman gives a suitably quirky and powerful vocal performance making a real authentic anthem that they have never matched.

Of the tracks that were kinda hits kinda not, Easy has really grown on me since I first heard it and I'd rank it higher than Language now. It's so energetic and winding with it's drops and pitch alteration throughout that it's impossible not to get caught up in it's pure euphoria, it's not quite my favourite of his this decade though ;o We Appreciate Power I heard right at the start of this year, apparently a few months after it came out (no surprises there) but I instantly fell in love. I enjoyed the little I knew of her, but this was another level, the industrial techno influence, glitchy and distorted production and fiendishly ominous and power hungry vocals and lyrics make for an immense package and I'd imagine had I given it more time, it would be much higher up this list, it's certainly right up there with the best of the year, but again, not quite my full favourite ohmy.gif

Of the non-hits, Anna Meredith has been one of the best (and for the most part, only) modern classical artists I've found this decade and I will forever be thankful to Seven to pointing me in the right direction of her material as her electronic and classical fusion with escalating tempo is wonderful. Nautilus is an excellent example of that with blaring horns and an electronic undertone marching along continuously building in intensity and never losing it's epic scale. One more to come from her! I can't quite remember where I came across Haerts' Wings (may have been BJSC) but it was a lovely folk-pop moment with some wonderful lyrics about floating away that combined with the rising instrumental gives a trance-like quality that makes you lose yourself in the music. Hearing is an utterly gorgeous string and piano instrumental that starts out with a simple piano line that rises in intensity and emotional feeling as the other string instruments come in, it's a perfect conveying of the melancholy through no words and worth a listen if you weren't in the Instrumentals spin-off I discovered it in.

faves 81-120

81. Rudimental feat. John Newman – Feel the Love (2012) They only ever had three true standout tracks for me (and yes those are the three that went #1), shame they went a bit downhill 2nd era onwards in general (although These Days ranks as my top Rudimental track)
84. Mat Zo & Porter Robinson - Easy (2013) wouldn't put this near Language myself but another great track of Porter's, which sadly seems to be forgotten by EDM fans in favour of his album that followed (which is great too)
85. Arctic Monkeys – Do I Wanna Know? (2013)
88. Robin Schulz feat Lilly Wood & The Prick – Prayer in C (2014) this may feature in my top 100 too, was amazing a song like this managed to get so big
89. Justin Timberlake – Mirrors (2013)
90. Pendulum – Watercolour (2010)
91. Glass Candy – Warm in the Winter (2011) was going to skim this but it seemed rather interesting so I did end up sitting through the whole song ! looks like it was sent to BJSC 40 too (which I sat out so didn't even hear at the time) so that's another to add to your BJSC faves list
92. Coldplay – Every Teardrop is a Waterfall (2011)
94. FM-84 – Arcade Summer (2016) rather good track although I must say I prefer 'Running In The Night' tongue.gif
95. Skrillex – Bangarang (2012)
97. Nayo Hiiragi - Requiem (2016)
100. Kishi Bashi – I Am The Anti-Christ to You (2015)

109. Arcade Fire – Everything Now (2017)
110. DVBBS & Borgeous - Tsunami (2014)
112. Disclosure feat. AlunaGeorge – White Noise (2013)
113. Coldplay – Adventure of a Lifetime (2015)
114. The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk – I Feel It Coming (2016)

I wasn't in that BJSC with Glass Candy either so I must have come to it by other means, it did mean I couldn't send it though which was a shame tongue.gif

71. Apparat feat. Soap&Skin – Goodbye (2018)
72. Disclosure feat. Sam Smith – Latch (2012)
73. Faul & Wad-Ad & PNAU - Changes (2013)
74. Xan Griffin - Utopia (2015)
75. Crywolf feat. Meghan Kennedy – Home We Made Part II (Skrux remix) (2015)
76. London Grammar – Wasting My Young Years (2013)
77. Ellie Goulding – Under the Sheets (2010)
78. Imagine Dragons - Radioactive (2013)
79. Jay Dabhi & Moises Modesto – Cry for Freedom (2014)
80. Chase & Status feat. Mali – Let You Go (2010)

Goodbye apparently was in a Buzzjack song contest earlier this decade which completely passed me by, but I really got into it as it was used as the theme song for the Netflix German sci-fi show, DARK, one of the best shows of the decade with it's complex interwoven storytelling, myths and strikingly bleak style. The song fits it perfectly as an opening, a desperately bleak but still mysterious and constantly unfolding and eventual outcry of despair, which is clearly a common feeling felt amongst the characters. Even outside of the context of the show, it's a powerful song and one that stayed with me a lot. On the topic of failed BJSC entries, Crywolf is perhaps my most infamous of these and while it's certainly been redeemed, it was a nasty shock at the time as it's an absolutely beautiful melodic dubstep song which showcases the best qualities of Crywolf that I went over earlier, a beautiful despair-filled duet and thr Skrux remix adds a beautiful melody to the drops and production which complements it even better than the original, still a song I come back to a lot. Doing slightly better in a different song contest is Utopia by Xan Griffin, a similar melodic dubstep that is instead surrounded with good feelings which can be felt in the positive piano accompaniment or the rising synths, it's the great counterpoint to Crywolf but still just as good, and we also have another BJSC foreign favourite with Cry for Freedom, which was I believe late 2000s but I certainly didn't hear it then and it's sound is 2010s enough that I'm counting it anyway, it's a great emotion-laden drum'n'bass song with an excellent build-up that works even better when taken in context of it being about innocents dying in a war-torn land of Israel-Palestine.

Some throwbacks to 2010 here with Under the Sheets and Let You Go. The former and those still to come from her will probably make me seem like a real Ellie Goulding stan, but for her first two albums I kinda was, her debut is an excellent pop track with an infectious chorus and one that shows her quirky vocal style off to full effect. Let You Go is a true headrush of a song, going from a mere warning to completely off the wall dramatic with siren style synths and drum beats crashing for the breakdown. It's got a great sinister vibe and fantastic production is classic of their sound from No More Idols.

Other chart stuff here includes Changes, a wonderful saxophone drive dance track accompanied with a children's choir that reflects a great late summer vibe that always makes me feel relaxed. Wasting My Young Years is my favourite from London Grammar to this day and is still haunting with the stunning Florence-esque vocals and sad damning piano and lyrics makes it truly beautiful. From the same year, Radioactive is when Imagine Dragons to still okay to like and for good reason, they're a bit naff otherwise, but there is scarce a more defiant and strong way of announcing your statement of intent as Radioactive, with gruff vocals that mean every word they say and a comparatively restrained backing that makes them really speak for themselves. A shame they couldn't get close to this later, but it's still a gem.

I sense quite a few of this section will be completely unknown to most of you, so I'll do more links than usual.

61. Anna Meredith – RedBlueGreen (2018)
62. We Are All Astronauts feat. Ellena Soule - Wolves (2014)
63. Jessie Ware – 110% (If You’re Never Gonna Move) (2012)
64. Haim – If I Could Change Your Mind (2014)
65. Glass Animals – Life Itself (2016)
66. Rhye – Open (2013)
67. Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter (2016)
68. Ellie Goulding – Figure 8 (2012)
69. Tom Day – Going Home (2013)
70. The Enigma TNG – The Glass Alice (2017)

There she is again, Anna Meredith with her highest entry here with RedBlueGreen taken from soundtrack to the movie Eighth Grade, one of my favourite movies of the decade and this really captures the optimism looking for a new start that is reflected in the ending, but again even outside the context, it's a great swirling electro-synth whick loops all over the place and is rather addictive by the end of it. Also here from the depths of the internet is Open by Rhye, one of my favourites of 2013 and a beautiful, sultry track about the wonders of the female body, it's intimate but genuine and you can feel how meaningful the lyrics are accompanied by sad strings. Finally, The Enigma TNG is a sort of metal/hardcore artist that makes various covers on YouTube and one of which was an electronic/metal mishmash titled The Glass Alice, it's a really epic combination accompanied with pleasing soprano vocals and gruff metal noises that doesn't relent. It was a great soundtrack when out walking and when reading a darker version of Alice in Wonderland earlier this year, such is my random imagination.

110% is now seemingly permanently known as If You're Never Gonna Move, but I remember it before it was cool (kinda). It was entered into BJSC but it was prominent outside of there too and stayed with me a lot throughout the decade with her gorgeous hushed vocals accompanied with a tranquil backing, she did get a bit too Heart FM with future singles but this is an example where her classy brand of pop works. Wolves is one of my favourite of my own BJSC entries and was a wonderful find when I was volunteering in Australia, I was so struck by its incredible use of atmosphere and ambience to rework the rather nice song of the same name by folk singer Ellena Soule, which has some beautiful tones anyway. It still is a beauty and was pleased it turned out to be an unexpected hit at the time. Finally, another discovery from way back. Again the rules of the artist being called Tom apply here, but this is a beautiful stripped back track following a single electronic keyboard refrain, and that really is all you need to evoke many moods and tell many stories in this case. It's simplicity is wonderful.

Haim are also here, they have a couple still to come but this was a real grower years after its release and features a great chorus and production, some classic vocal harmonies and ad libs from the sisters as well as a video where they show that they are good at dancing alongside...everything else, my gosh they're cool, I want to be them. Glass Animals was one of those random Radio 1 early morning finds that really stuck with me with it's immense, building electro-indie pop production and massive chorus. I shamefully haven't really explored them further, but this was a great introduction. Ellie is here once more with the massive smash hit that never was, Figure 8, this has everything - a HUGE chorus, fantastic winding electro-pop production and intense vocal delivery, yet it never quite worked out. Shame, it's still a tune though and one of her best, though she still has one still to come. Finally, we have a song that really endeared itself to me thanks to its visuals and that did make me appreciate the song a lot more, Shelter is a great dance track with some soothing production and vocals but it's that wonderful anime art style and story in the video that makes it seem like a soundtrack to a Studio Ghibli film, and turns it into a beautiful tear jerker of a song. Again, I challenge you not to cry x

51. Bastille – Overjoyed (2012)
52. Hiatus – Precious Little (2016)
53. Haim – The Wire (2013)
54. James Vincent McMorrow – Higher Love (2011)
55. Lana Del Rey – Born to Die (2012)
56. Joe Goddard feat. Valentina – Gabriel (2011)
57. Coldplay – Midnight (2014)
58. Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones – I Got U (2014)
59. Matrix & Futurebound feat. Baby Blue – Magnetic Eyes (2013)
60. Avicii – Penguin (2011)

My favourite from Bastille perhaps isn't the same as everyone else's, but instead the rather beautiful and understated Overjoyed, which I found on a Digital Spy article and entered to BJSC about a year before they blew up with Pompeii (lol), I don't often boast about 'knowing them before it was cool' but I do think this applies here cool.gif Anyway, Overjoyed is still their best for me easily, and I'm gutted they never released it as it's a gorgeous stripped back ballad which has Dan's voice at it's most haunting and the guitar line and damning electronic undertone really add to the tone of the song. Another BJSC entry and indeed very much in same stripped back tone, is Precious Little by Hiatus, a sad piano instrumental sticking to the same melody throughout before eventually being joined by dark strings conjuring an atmosphere of deep sadness. It was inspired and was made to raise money in order to help innocent people caught in the crossfire of the Israel/Palestine war, and that sentiment really does add to the song's incredible emotional weighting. Buy it if you can on Bandcamp to help a good cause.

Songs you may know here are from Lana Del Rey, I was very into her first era and Born to Die is very representative of her general style that I fell in love with, with it's brooding, distant frustration accompanied by sweeping strings and generally extravagant production, you have a dark old-style pop gem that she specialises in. On the other end of the feeling spectrum, I Got U using it's Whitney Houston sample, blaring steel drums and ooohing gospel choirs is one of the most upbeat and happy house songs I've heard this decade and it deserved it's success a lot, it will brighten up any winter day and will ofc. sound excellent in the summer too. A certain Whitney vocal was used this year on a new version of Higher Love which I...kinda liked but honestly, the best version of still the extremely stripped back folk cover by James Vincent McMorrow, with a beautiful Bon Iver-esque vocal and a piano the only accompaniment, it really gets new found emotion out of what was originally an upbeat disco song and is pretty much exactly what I look for in a stripped down cover, it's gorgeous. Matrix & Futurebound really had a wonderful opening trio of singles and Magnetic Eyes was the best of them mainly due to it's wonderful upbeat chorus and cute and likeable, vocal from Baby Blue, it always gives me good feelings and has aged quite well for me at least. Finally, what I believe is Haim's best song, The Wire is here, which I ranked fairly low in 2013 EOY but it has definitely grown on me loads throughout the decade. There's a great bit of classic guitar on this one and it adds to the infectious chorus and harmonies that they specialise in.

The outliers we have here is the rather excellently mysterious and intriguing Gabriel, which I thought might have a chance of being a chart hit due to featuring on Radio 1's playlist briefly but seems not. The dramatic female vocals fit very well with the glitchy and sparse electronic production creating a strange but wonderful hybrid of love ballad and minimalist experimental track that should've caught on more. Another welcome experimentation comes from Coldplay, it saddens me that Midnight won't be remembered by so many as it's slowly building, desolate ambient/folktronica sound assisted by Jon Hopkins is one that fit them excellently and was a welcome switch up of their standard formula which gives me hope, as they continue to do so, that they are never content to stay with the same sound and for as many times as it doesn't work, it can equally work excellently like it does here. And my favourite Avicii song this decade is probably one that not a lot know, (or known as that song that Leona Lewis sampled and made completely shit at least) maybe it's the bird in the title that sways me, but Penguin is a great build up of his classic joyful synths with an addictive piano line and really captures him at his best for me, all the attempts to add vocals have failed, it works best as an instrumental.

Favourites from the last few sections:

53. Haim – The Wire (2013)

64. Haim – If I Could Change Your Mind (2014)
65. Glass Animals – Life Itself (2016) I think the word I used to describe this when it first came out was 'experimental' tongue.gif but it has grown on me since
67. Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter (2016) A really great piece, so powerful and was really stuck in my head back when it was out!
69. Tom Day – Going Home (2013) Giving this a listen now, a nice little instrumental track

Ooh I'm very pleased that 'Arcade Summer' made your countdown! I remember stumbling across it on SoundCloud and not being able to take it off repeat for a good few days. I really didn't expect it to do much in BJSC so my mind was blown by a top 10 placing and 5 sets of 18 heart.gif the taste jumped out that month. Synthwave is such a timeless sounding genre on the whole, it's hard to go wrong with it really. Excited for more FM-84 music in the future! Btw I appreciated the #SeyeJadaTerraPhonia impact of that section also *.* now, there are SO many favourites here that commenting on them all would result in a mind-numbingly long wall of text laugh.gif so I will share my favourites from your latest section and aim to stay on top of this from now on:

#59 Matrix & Futurebound feat. Baby Blue – Magnetic Eyes
What a forgotten gem this is! *.* very feel-good. I agree that their first trio of songs were all of good quality. I must confess that 'All I Know' was one of those songs that I didn't know the artist/name of for years (I think I missed the top 40 countdown for a few weeks while it was charting), it was only Bray playing it on plug.dj last year or so that finally made me put 2 + 2 together! Better late than never eh laugh.gif

#58. Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones – I Got U
Take me back to the dance music we had in the chart back in 2014 <3 very summery and uplifting. It took me a few years to clock what the sample was though oops blush.gif who knew it would be Jax Jones that would still be the relevant one commercially going into the 2020s.

#57. Coldplay – Midnight
I do love this even though I targeted it early in the Coldplay survivor, they have too many good songs kink.gif such an unexpected but welcome sound!

#56 Joe Goddard feat. Valentina – Gabriel
Ooh I know this due to being a retro Persephonia entry! Very cool ~

#55. Lana Del Rey – Born to Die
My second favourite Lana song only behind 'Ride' wub.gif so dark and cinematic. It will be a life highlight if she performs this in February when I go to see her!

#54 James Vincent McMorrow – Higher Love
Way more to my taste than the recent Kygo version! His vocals are stunning, I agree that it's very Bon Iver.

#52. Hiatus – Precious Little
The Jadakissnia entry that never was! I'm so glad you sent it though as it made me appreciate it more than when I discarded it as a potential. I had to be completely on board with a piano instrumental eventually right? heart.gif

'The Wire' is also pretty good. High quality section there!

So many comments, thank you all very much *.* heart.gif @Jade, that's news to me that Precious Little was a potential of yours ohmy.gif (or maybe you've mentioned it somewhere and I've forgot haha), a good thing I came across it then!

Every song will be linked from now on as all the top 50 needs to be heard!

46. Henry Saiz – All the Evil of This World (2014)
Another one of my favourite BJSC discoveries, All the Evil of this World is gifted with some lush electronic synths and drums along with dark and thoughtful lyrics sung by an unidentified but extremely fitting shrill vocalist to create an dark intense electronic song that really should soundtrack any dark fantasy occult based film.

47. M83 feat. Haim – Holes in the Sky (2015)
Hope you're ready Brι, we have the first of three songs from M83 here with their collaboration to regulars here, Haim that was on the soundtrack to the movie, Divergent. I wasn't the biggest fan of the films, there was too much of an influx of YA fantasy films this decade and they got tiresome, but a good thing to come out of them was the wonderful indie collaborations we got, this being a really great example of an intense apocalypse-themed, indie-electro track with a great slow build which puts emphasis on both the building power of the vocals and in the end giving way to the rising production. In sum, two of my favourite artists of the decade and I wasn't disappointed.

48. The Midnight - Gloria (2017)
Here are The Midnight again with their highest entry here, I'd long wanted to send this to BJSC but was beaten to it and more fool me, this song reminds me a lot of another favourite song of mine, Elbow's One Day Like This in it's themes of embracing tomorrow and willing to start again and it's that hopeful feel that keeps me coming back to it, but the immense 80s electro power ballad production is also wonderful with blaring saxophones, guitars and synths and a choir enrapturing the track. It's a truly epic experience of a track and one I really recommend to anyone that's feeling down as it really has that healing power.

49. Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams – Get Lucky (2013)
Not that you need the link for this as I'm sure everyone and their dog heard Daft Punk's comeback, but it was a great moment for a group that had never had a true mega smash hit before and to remind us they still exist (which has been sparse since then admittedly :'(). It was a great fusion of their usual robotic, spacey style with the urban, contemporary beats of Pharrel, with a super addictive guitar lick and a great robot singalong at the end, overplay threatened it but it thankfully didn't prevail and I still very much love listening to this.

50. Protohype & Kezwik – Hold Your Breath (2013)
This was a great discovery from Unknown Pleasures back in 2013 that has stuck with me. A wonderful example of melodic dubstep and one of the songs that got me so into the genre in the middle of the decade. This is met with some crashing drops but they never sacrifice the great, quite beautiful bedtime melody that persists through the track and the whole thing feels like a really wild ride as the drops crash before going back to the main distorted vocal refrain. Highly enjoyable for any dubstep fan~

41. Films – I’m Sleeping Under the Dead Tree (2017)
Though they are extremely difficult to Google, the Japanese cinematic neo-classical duo Films have been one of my favourite finds this decade, and though only one other is still to come, they both finish very high up. I'm Sleeping Under the Dead Tree is less representative of their overall style (which usually has elements of choral opera vocals) but is an intensely creepy, delicate and stunning track that reflects a dark and wistful world that much of their music can soundtrack. Made up of a single piano refrain for the first half of the track, it slowly creeps its way along before the dark strings come in to build to an overall crescendo that sacrifices none of the magical atmosphere built. It's a brilliant example of an effective minimalist piece and I want to hear this soundtrack every dark character moment where they are alone in every film.

42. Ellie Goulding – My Blood (2012)
A surprising choice for my favourite from Ms Goulding perhaps, but this staying as a non single has helped it stay less exposed so maybe that's why. My Blood is a fantastic cut from the Halcyon album (AKA the last good album she ever did) that has a huge chorus as well as great verses and refrain that builds up to it, it is accompanied by some dark lyrics about a dangerous love that may have been misinterpreted by some given it featured on the Cinderella soundtrack :') It's still a great representation of Ellie's daring style on Halcyon and it's a great shame that we will likely never hear anything like this again as that chart (and Amazon #topical) monopoly consumes her.

43. NONONO – Pumpin’ Blood (2013)
It's rare you get that one track that just works as a happy, care-free song designed to lift your mood without being overly cheesy or vomit-inducing, and this song is just that. Discovered through BJSC initially, I've come back to this a lot and always am happy when I hear it used on an advert or something (I'm sure some of you would've heard this even if weren't in that BJSC). The whistling hook is it's ultimate power for it's feel good vibe as well as the uplifting lyrics and upbeat moving along of the song, there'll be no frowns as long as this song's playing.

44. Christine & The Queens – Tilted/Christine (2016)
One of the strangest breakthrough hits of the decade, when I first heard it in BJSC, I don't think I ever expected this to be a hit at all, but it was an absolute joy to see in the dull charts of that time. It's an interesting contrast of a song as its upbeat and seems fairly happy but the lyrics remain rather sad, contemplative and potentially worrying given they are 'doing their face with magic marker', it's a tough balance to get in a song where the mood and music are different to work as one but this manages it and remains a really bouncy, catchy and addictively composed song as well as beautifully written. And yes, while it did take the English version for me to really love it, I have really come round to the original French version, Christine, too, it doesn't have the additional lyrical power, but it's still beautiful. An excellent birth of a quirky popstar and one of the best chart moments of the decade (and a certified addition on the 1001 songs you should listen to before you die to add cool.gif )

45. First Aid Kit – Emmylou (2012)
Speaking of emotional, Emmylou is an early BJSC discovery that remains a beautiful and emotional song of a genre I don't usually enjoy. With lyrics reflecting issues with a relationship that are really touching and affecting metaphors making it as beautifully written as it is sung and composed with cooing strings and stroked guitars adding to the mood. I listened to this a lot when I wasn't feeling great and going through some complex feelings myself at the time and I found it really helped and it still makes me well up a bit even when I hear it now. I have intended to check out more from First Aid Kit, just haven't got around to it oops, one day~

Quite a lot to catch up on since my last post, I think Shake It Out has become a real classic now, same for Levels, On Hold is easily my favourite song The xx have put out (and that's saying something!), and I definitely agree on Billie Eilish being one of the best new artists around, so pleased that bury a friend and bad guy became big hits!

Language and I Feel It Coming are both still great, and I'm kinda surprised to see Tsunami so high in your chart, it really is brilliant and I'm glad it got to number one in some form even if the Tinie version wasn't quite as good, still didn't mind that version anyway!

Ballad of the Mighty I, Everything Now, Only Teardrops, Every Teardrop is a Waterfall are all very good too but special appreciation goes to the 81-90 section for having Watercolour, Prayer In C and Do I Wanna Know, which would probably all be in my top 100 of the decade too! wub.gif Mirrors and Easy were two other solid tracks from that section as well.

Let You Go is great to see up here, feels kinda forgotten in the Chase & Status discography now but I really like it, and Figure 8 is easily one of Ellie Goulding's best, just brilliant! If I Could Change Your Mind would definitely be my favourite Haim song and I don't think anything they've released since even comes close (although some of the stuff they released before it does), and Born To Die is another really good one in here, Lana at her best.

Pumpin' Blood was difficult to escape really, not only was it used in adverts and stuff but that whistling hook has also been the theme tune to the BBC's live football programme Final Score for years now! Watching BBC One at about 4pm on a Saturday more or less guarantees you that hook every time, and it's not the only great song they've used as a theme tune either as they had Jump in the Pool by Friendly Fires for a while before that!

Looking forward to seeing your top 40!

Thanks for commenting, coi! You're teasing me with your non-existent top 100 I swear D: I'd love to see it!

36. Natural Animal – Who You Are (2014)
Another one of my favourite BJSC discoveries that always moves me to tears. A beautiful indie-electronic number with twinkling synths and subtle yet emotional vocals and the song benefits from a spoken word section from philosopher, Alan Watts which fits the song's lyrical themes of getting to know who someone really is sometimes beyond their consciousness, which I have found his speech on some other tracks as well, and here is really works well to make a truly uplifting and heartfelt achieve it's full potential.

37. Marcus Warner - Africa (2017)
There is sometimes nothing I like better than listening to CFX/Epic Jenny cinematic classical music on YouTube and many of which really strike an emotional chord with me that I have to share them. This being one of them which I sent to BJSC and I was pleased to see that others felt the same when it was a big hit. Africa is a true ode to the beauty and scope of the continent that soars over a majestic orchestra and choirs, it is best watched with the video that I've linked it with even if it isn't official, as watching it along Africa's wildlife really evokes that beauty. This hasn't let up in my affections since visiting the continent myself and witnessing a few of Africa's wildlife and makes me all the more sad how much of it is being destroyed :'(

38. Clean Bandit – Mozart’s House (2013)
As it may have been made clear in the recent Clean Bandit rate, I have some very good feelings towards the debut top 40 hit from Clean Bandit, and for good reason, it sounded like nothing else at the time. Combining classical music with garage and pop sounds is certainly something I don't see a lot in the charts and seeing it break through was a true joy, and it still sounds incredible. The string sections are perfectly timed and the electronic verses give a different but still awesome vibe. It's just such a shame that with that commercial recognition, they got gradually more watered down to the point I'm not that excited to hear them anymore, a great pity for what could've been but let's nonetheless enjoy this beauty for what it is.

39. Swedish House Mafia – Greyhound (2012)
When these guys were good, they were absolutely top class and 2012 proved that in a huge way with one behemoth still to come and this banger. Greyhound has an extremely addictive beat which persists and pulses throughout the track before exploding into a synth meltdown and going back to that ever pulsating beat, and the epic dog race of the video is a great accompaniment. Even at nearly seven minutes, it never loses your attention and it is the perfect track for motivation like being on the treadmill and working out. A banger now and always.

40. Max Richter – Spring 1 (Ade Laugee remix) (2014)
Another BJSC discovery and as you can see, 2014 was an extremely good year for these. This is possibly one of the most unique entries I'd heard at that point and though I'm sure I could find something similar on r/listentothis these days, it's still rather wonderful in its eccentricity. It is essentially remix of Max Richter's own re-composition of Vivaldi's Four Seasons with added bhangra and trip-hop-esque effects, and it's as balmy as it sounds but works astoundingly well and as a massive fan of the Four Seasons myself, really appreciated this interesting experiment and it really influenced me to start looking for experimental takes on classical tracks like this. Shout out also to another take on the Four Seasons by Anna Meredith and the Scottish Ensemble which doesn't fit here cos it's an whole EP, but is highly recommended experimental take on Vivaldi.

31. FM-84 feat. Ollie Wride – Running in the Night (2017)
So yes here he is again with another one of his songs sent to BJSC that turned to be even better than Arcade Summer. If that was a chilled synthwave song for summer evenings, then this adds power ballad elements and ends up being equally charming. Ollie Wride's vocals fit wonderfully with the fine as ever synthwave production and add a real intensity to the song which makes it perfect as a soundtrack to an 80s adventure teen movie or something, Wride also reminds me a little bit of Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters vocally and this does have a hint of their work, I'm a big fan anyway so no bad thing. It's overall ,again, a wonderful throwback, and his album is another real treat to those that don't know it.

32. The Vaccines – If You Wanna (2011)
I mainly associate uni memories with this one so rose tinted glasses and all, but it's certainly persisted throughout the decade. We've been a bit absent of simple, 'landfill indie' shoutalong anthems this decade in comparison with the 2000s and it's a shame as I do love them, and so this being a minor chart hit/soundbed for TV shows was welcome as it's ever so fun and bouncy with a chorus and riff designed for head-banging and it doesn't outstay its welcome lengthwise so warrants repeated listens. For a time, I was really into the Vaccines and this was definitely their magnum opus.

33. The Naked & Famous – Young Blood (2010)
Bet you almost forgot this was from this decade? This was actually one of the first 'indie' songs that I really got into and what ultimately started to move me away from the sounds of the UK top 40 (at the start of the decade, my taste was pretty much cultivated by the Radio 1 playlist and the UK top 40), as this is a really great indie-pop anthem with a great synth and guitar combo as well as a youthful exuberance going throughout the lyrics and feel of the song that makes it perfect to soundtrack the many teen/Channel 4 shows it did, but with however many times it gets used, this is still a real keeper.

34. Lana Del Rey – Video Games (2011)
And the final entry from everyone's favourite retro dame is the song that introduced her to the world, and it still does encapsulate everything great about her sound. The harsh strings and brief plucks of the harp really create a classical and heavenly atmosphere and her wonderfully low and extremely unique (at least in comparison to her contemporaries) voice really takes centre stage and woos you along in this classic, timeless ballad that will surely last through the ages. I suppose you could call the lyrics 'problematic' if you look at them deeply, but we're not here for shit like that so just enjoy the music~

35. CHVRCHES vs Eric Prydz – Tether (2015)
Given how much I love CHVRCHES' original material, I shouldn't really like a dance DJ watering down their work (Marshmello can sod off, yay for their most boring song being their first big hit :/), thankfully Eric Prydz is more than capable of keeping the great vibes of their material while adding more to make it into a different beast. That's exactly the case here with him taking the building synth riff and making it the main focus and keeping a single vocal line and making a epic, pulsating dance anthem that doesn't let up until the very end. The original if ofc. great too, but I have a particular liking for this remix.
