I think it was too soon after 'Starboy' and he's not big enough to manage two BIG hits at the same time (a la Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Drake).

It was def meant as single 2 - Starboy was released in September after all. Starboy just seemed to gain momentum again over Xmas when it looked like it was starting to wane!

Have to disagree with those choices I'm afraid. It was 'Umbrella' that made Rihanna, not 'S.O.S.' - almost easy to forget she had hits before that!

SOS is far superior to Umbrella imo, and Somebody's Watching Me is a great dance track and is very atmospheric compared to most other looped house songs, so I would say in an ideal world they should have taken a few weeks off Crazy at number 1.

Having said that I really like Crazy too (and U2 and Mary J Blige's One (#2) and Chicane and Tom Jones' Stoned In Love which made top 10 at this time too) and numerous other songs outside the top 10 during this time too . Just a great time for the charts back then in early 2006 imo.

Not surprised Matt was in the top 100, he was top 150 on iTunes still up to yesterday!

I think 'S.O.S.' really did help her though, she was seen as someone who was likely to remain a one hit wonder (sort of) before that came along and changed it, and she had decent success (although I do agree that she was lucky to keep getting a continued push until 'Umbrella' really sent things stratospheric for her).

Oh I don't disagree with you there tbf, I think it was obvious they were pushing her as the next big thing but it wasn't the era to do so. She was still on the same line as say, Ciara, Amerie and Cassie at the time.

2006 was a great year full stop for chart music, the resurgence of dance music especially. Very varied in genre, and some absolute classic urban-pop crossovers such as 'Hips Don't Lie', 'SexyBack' and 'Maneater'. Freemasons also managed to turn some average songs into absolute tunes (such as 'Deja Vu' by Beyoncé).

Re: Rihanna, I remember back in 2009 when Russian Roulette entered at #6, which seemed shockingly low at the time for the lead single from her new album (eventually rising to #2), and thinking "Oh well, that's the end of her peak era".

Rude Boy being a huge club anthem throughout 2010 made me reconsider that, and then came Love The Way You Lie...

That's the thing with Rihanna she's so huge because she does pop but she also does anti pop and makes it pop!!

Dance music hadn't gone away really from the charts though, there were plenty of dance songs in the top 40 in 2005, probably more than there had been in 2004, even if a few of them did underperform.

Freemasons also had the glorious Watchin in 2006 which did underperform in the charts a bit sadly but at least it went top 20.

Dance did start to go downhill in late 2006 and 2007 imo when electro took off, it was too much about getting an annoying vocal like in Yeah Yeah, Perfect (Exceeder) or The Creeps (Get On The Dance Floor) over a dull electro beat and the soul and emotion (as had been present in vocal trance and funky house) had gone from a lot of dance music that made the charts.

About SexyBack, I much preferred My Love, it sounded so fresh and incredible at the time, looking back it was arguably one of the first EDM trap songs to become a hit.

'Sexual' spending its fifth week at #6, is that a record?

Yes it is. I'll do a complete update of the thread that listed the most weeks spent at each position in the next day or two. More "Fairytale Of New York" dominance in the teens after this winter's run plus other oddities like Rihanna's "Needed Me" breaking the record with 5 weeks at Number 48 etc.
