Hey guys and gals,

Upon consulting with BuzzJack member Spiral, I've taken it upon myself to create the next Now Music thread, after the last one has been suitably used for the last 2 years, and has inspired 30+ pages of comments.

What I hope to bring to this thread, with your support and permission of course, is both a directory for every Now release which has been reviewed on the forum, as well as a focal point for the latest releases and other Now news.

There have been various "Now rates" and other threads for specific Now volumes, and it is my hope that I can incorporate these into the weekly reviews as and when they come up. So this means you won't have to repeat anything you've already done before, all the data for each release will come together nicely, thanks to the fine work of other Buzzjack members in the past.

Disc 1 is amazing but Disc 2 is less so.. Is Stormzy last on Disc 1 or first on Disc 2? Both seem like strange placing for it though

Great that Khalid made it so early on Disc 2, hopefully it’ll be a hit soon!

U2 & Oasis closing Disc 2 is strange too, I’m not complaining as both songs are great... but why?

LF previously appeared on NOW 33. They could have at least included another song by Oasis if they were eager to include them

To be fair it's a better tracklist than I was expecting, I thought it would be much more urban heavy. No Ed Sheeran must be a kick in the teeth though!

I do get the feeling they were scraping the barrel with a flop from Rag 'N' Bone Man which was released before 'Grace' as well as U2 and an oldie from Oasis. If they had room why not include either Noel or Liam Gallagher's new tracks or even both?

Overall I think it's a good selection, good placements for Kylie, Timberlake, Portugal. The Man and George Ezra. It's a nice tribute to see Live Forever there, and it's a solid U2 track (not my favourite single from that album, that would be Get Out of Your Own Way.

So much pop compared to the charts. I love it! Kylie, Justin, Taylor, and Dua Lipa! I love it. What a strong track listing!

Well that is a disappointingly big number of flop singles. My questions:

Why do NOW keep insisting on putting in Rag'n'Bone Man?
And the U2 single no one cared about which was out last year?
Why the need for Paloma to feature twice also?
The Oasis one just because Liam performed it as a tribute at the BRITs?

Those as well as Kylie, Tom Walker, Calum Scott, Khalid, CLiQ, SZA, Demi and Maroon 5 brings the total to 11 songs that missed the top 40 (12 if you count Oasis too).

Sad that there are no #1 singles on this edition either, perhaps Ed is saving 'Perfect' for a NOW 100 track 1 appearance (and I bet 'Shape Of You' appears on NOW 100 also). None of the movie soundtrack singles being able to get licensed either, but other than those it's got most of the hits. Aside, does anyone think they'll make NOW 100 a 3-CD comp?

Surprised they actually got Taylor though, that's good for them. Also surprised they got Drake even if it's not his #1 and just a feature credit.

I suppose NOW have a thing for Kylie, and the NOW buying audience probably like her more than a lot of the urban stuff. Was half expecting 'Dancing' to feature anyway though I was doing my NOW predictions based on the biggest hit singles.

Like most of you I’m surprised at the songs that feature, but disappointed at no Jorja Smith. Normally the critics choice winner always appears on the spring edition. So it’s unusual for this not to be the case.

Oasis just don’t belong on a Now volume at this time. There’s not enough cause to merit its inclusion at this stage. The Cranberries would have been a more suitable tribute song.

U2... just no.

Quite like the songs they put on from Rag’N’Bone Man, Paloma Faith and Kylie Minogue, even if they charged low.

I’m not sure why Taylor was included and I’m not a fan of the song.

I'm not a fan of the T-Swift song either but she's a big name and it's good for NOW that they've got her as she's usually funny with them. At least 'Ready For It' was a top ten hit too, and that they didn't choose 'Gorgeous' or 'End Game' over it.

I don't get having Oasis as a tribute either. If it's as a Manchester victims tribute which I presume it is, they already had 'One Last Time' appear on NOW 97. And if I'm not mistaken it's not even the acoustic version Liam performed at OLM/Brits but the original version. Could've put in 'Linger' by The Cranberries as a tribute to their lead singer instead.

Jorja Smith is an odd exclusion too.

This is very much a tracklist that screams ‘we’re saving the huge hits for Now 100’

Nice for some flops to get their moment in the spotlight but I can’t see this edition selling particularly well.

Unpopular opinion-I quite like the tracklist. The flops are the songs I’ve actually heard.

Perhaps Now are realising that they have to go for album sellers and big names to fill the gaps. Kylie, Paloma and Maroon 5 cant get top 40 but people are still aware of the tracks-probably more so than they are of the ‘chart hits’.

I agree. I think it's NOW looking for more established artists / longer runs in the chart.

I'm with you with liking the track listing as well. Big omissions in the way of "hits", but heavy on the decent sounding songs.

Out of those I can see Zedd, Bazzi, Bebe Rexha and possibly RAYE (if the song actually becomes a hit) getting adds but probably none of the others.

If this really is Jorja Smith’s year, then an album and follow-up single should come soon that will smash, then they won’t be able to deny her some disc space. I just hope she doesn’t do a Jack Garratt on Now 93 and completely flop and go out of existence.

Oasis’ appearance on the album might have something to do with Liam performing the song at the BRITs as a tribute to the Manchester victims. Apart from NOW 33, the only other compilation LF appeared on was the millennium edition of NOW 1994

Disappointing tracklist. However, that's more down to this horrendous urban music scene atm and it dominating disc 2.

I wonder if Fifty Shades are holding the rights to 'For You' (and possibly 'Capital Letters') until Now 100, for after the DVD release?

Only slightly better than Now 98 which was the first one I didn’t buy in some time. Disc 1 is ok but disc 2 is poor. So many omissions!

Tbh, with how slow the charts move, I'd say it's been big enough to warrant a late addition, even if it's not top 40 by the time that Now 100 is released. I think Gooddelta is right. I think they've missed off the bigger hits like 'For You' and 'This Is Me' etc.. (partially coz of licensing issues) but mainly so they have more actual hits for the milestone album!

In all fairness, there’s only been 3 #1s since the last Now and all three are by artists who hate being on Now albums. And some other big hits which seem like odd omissions (This Is Me, For You, All The Stars) are from recent soundtracks who also hate being on Now albums. I’m sure the next Now will have at least Ed, Drake, Keala & Rita/Liam - maybe even Taylor now we’ve got Ready For It on Now 99. All things considered I would still say this is one of the better springtime Nows of recent years, sure there’s a few non-Top 40 songs on here but most of them are either well known anyway (Kylie) or likely to be Top 40 soon (CLiQ)

CD 2 looks like ear porn for all the roadmen out there! It says it all about the stagnant and uncompetitive nature of the UK charts that there isn't a number one that is featured here. A few years ago compilations like this would have been littered with them. Gone are the days when you can have 10 or more songs that reached number one in the Official chart featured on a NOW! album.

Bouuf Daddy is easily the best song on this album in my opinion!


Looking at the positioning of the songs in the tracklist I would guess that "These Days", "IDGAF", "Feel It Still", "Barking", "Say Something", "Breathe" will be the songs that feature on the advert.

According to Rag’n’Bone Man’s discography, “As You Are” is the fourth single with “Grace” being the fifth which means they should’ve included “As You Are” on 98 and “Grace” on 99. They did that with Spice Girls in 1998 putting “Stop” on 39, “Viva Forever” on 40 and “Too Much” on 41 when it should’ve been “Too Much” on 39, “Stop” on 40 and “Viva Forever” on 41

I'm so excited for NOW 100. I don't even care who's on it.

My first NOW was NOW 44 when I got it for Christmas. Ever since then I've been collecting each volume and slowly collecting the previous volumes as I went along. I now have NOW 1-10 on vinyl, 10-99 on CD, the full anniversary series, the full millennium series, most of the spin-offs, and almost all the NOW Dance series. People think I'm sad, but I don't care! It's a great collection and spans 4 decades of music and I'd like to own that.

Well I think 'perfect' and 'Thinking out Loud' are cheesy, just from my perspective!

Cheesy isn't a bad thing though, I like a lot of the songs I suggested for the tracklist like 'Requiem', 'Right Here Waiting', 'Call Me', 'Fly on the Wings Of Love' and 'Heaven'!

I appreciate why they've done it, but I wish that pig and blimp weren't there, coz that's really nice otherwise. The other two things cheapen it a lil for me. But apart from those two things it's stunning.

I reckon they’ll put that inside the booklet like they did with NOW 30 Years. As for NOW 100, that would’ve actually been released in November 2016 with NOW 105 coming up if they never knocked their releases down to two a year

Personally, I’d go for a song that’s not featured in the series before, and my choice would be Without You but my second choice would be Silouettes.

Without You would be a touching tribute even though it’s not one of his bigger songs (in the UK). I think Wake Me Up or Levels are more likely considering their popularity and impact but I just hope he’s there at all. The Cranberries should’ve been on Now 99 over Oasis but Now likes to make odd decisions when it comes to artist tributes

Winners of the competition on Good Morning Britain were in Abbey Road studios yesterday recording their track for Now 100.

It’s by a group called MU4 and they appear to be 3 girls and a guy.

Not sure what to expect but it’s likely to be a pop song but will it trouble the charts I wonder. Somehow I doubt it.

Taylor Swift - Delicate Would be nice. We somehow managed to get ...Ready for It? and I really don't enjoy "End Game"
Kylie - Stop Me from Falling Maybe she could be at the bottom of Disc 2, but I think she needs to be on NOW 100 just because she's been a big staple of the NOWs since NOW 11!!
Troye Sivan - Bloom/My My My! My My My! might be a bit old, but Bloom would be nice to see on there. Put in the section with Grande and Swift for the LGBT friendly mood pop section
Christina Aguilera - Accelerate NEVER going to happen. But I can dream

most likely ones in bold. as for Drake/Ed Sheeran they're big enough to have two songs and I think Ed will licence SOY/Perfect for the big 100 (though he could also go with new single Happier), likewise both Drake songs should hopefully make an appearance. I expect 'This Is Me' will make it but no other TGS songs will. As for Black Panther songs I imagine 'All The Stars' will but not 'Pray For Me' as they'll go with 'Call Out My Name' for The Weeknd instead. It wasn't an official single in the UK. Only 'Lonely Together' was. Personally I don't expect they will include Avicii, they didn't include Linkin Park or The Cranberries following their respective lead singer deaths either, I think NOW will only do tributes for people as big as George Michael/David Bowie.

I suppose it means they can just focus on top 10 hits but that's a shame. Hopefully they can put the money towards not having to license 20+ filler songs towards actually getting some huge hits on here.

One disc is fine as long as they have big hits there, but it’s likely Perfect and Gods Plan will be there which are two fairly old songs now taking up space for newer hits (Happier and Nice For What at least would be better options if Ed & Drake need to be included)

I’m not looking forward to this anymore. This is not the way they would have chosen to celebrate this milestone when they were at the 50th volume. It’s sounding like a commercial mess and make no mistake, this is the final time I will purchase or care about any upcoming Now volumes.

Germany's Bravo Hits got it spot on earlier this year. The 100th edition could be either bought in a regular two-disc ‘hits’ format, a limited edition three-disc format with a bonus disc of classics, and a standalone five-disc ‘greatest hits’ album with one song from each volume was also released.

I hoped Now would take a similar approach as that format would have paid decent tribute to the series and been a good money spinner, whereas this…won’t be as there's not enough value in one disc for people that buy it for current music, and many people will own the chosen classics numerous times over. I guess a 5-disc 100 song special might still emerge, I’m sure there was talk earlier in the year that one was due.

yes I hope NOW change their mind because the big fans will feel a bit ripped off with only one disc of chart hits and one disc of songs they already own, and it will tarnish their legacy somewhat.

A 5CD (or 3CD) with the biggest hits from the NOW series would be a big seller and then they can make NOW 100 a normal NOW.

Are we sure ‘greatest hits’ doesn’t just mean cd1 track 1 will be Shape Of You?

Anyway I can see this being my last Now regardless. I’m just not that into chart music anymore. Having said that, I enjoyed the way they compiled Now 99 with big name flops.

It would be ok I think if the ‘greatest hits disc featured songs that missed out earlier in the series. But it’s probably just wishful thinking on my part that we may get first appearances for Madonna, Billy Joel, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day, a second for Dido and Maroon 5’s This Love.

I’ve been getting older Nows recently and have to say I’ve played the Now 27 and Now 31 I got for Christmas a lot more than Now 98 or 99.

I think I'll still buy them, as long as they keep the number gimmick and not go with something like "NOW Summer 2019".

I just hope that they don't overdo it with old songs. Defeats the purpose of the word "NOW" doesn't it?

Also! NOW That's What I Call A Summer Party 2018 is coming 22nd June. Makes me think the songs that don't appear on NOW 100 may appear on NOW Summer Party.

It would be great if they include some tracks that missed out on being on a numbered Now because they didn’t have the rights at the time as long as it consists of no more than 25% of the album track list. I’d love to see Mr. Brightside finally make a numbered Now for example!

I willl not be happy if including ‘Greatest Hits’ means putting on Uptown Funk, Happy, I Gotta Feeling and others they consistently rinse on the spinoffs!

Instead of re-releasing NOW 1 exactly how it was, it would be better if they altered the tracklist by rearranging it and adding extra tracks and make it something like this

I doubt he will. A lot of posthumous acts didn’t get appearances considering they were bigger than he is for instance, Prince, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. If anyone deserves a posthumous appearance on NOW 100, it’s Avicii

In the insert for NOW Summer Party 2018, it says that disc 2 will be greatest hits. That’s gonna ruin the album. They should do it 3 discs and make disc 3 the greatest hits disc and if they wanna include greatest hits, they can at least include hits which only appeared on the HITS series ie “Take On Me” and “I Feel For You”

Looks like the NOW team have a few No. 1s to put on NOW 100. Freaky Friday (if they can get a clean radio edit), One Kiss, I'll Be There, Solo, and Shotgun. Add in one of Drake's number ones (if he lets them) and they've got a good 6 to fill Disc 1.

Plus, now that I think about it. NOW 100 being only 1 disc of chart hits means they'll have more songs to include on NOW 101 during Xmas.

They said at the start of the year there'd be a 100-track album with one song from each album. Is this not going ahead now? Or are they planning a Christmas release for it.

If this is a compromise then it's a weak one. It should have been a 2CD regular album and the 5CD spin-off, at the very least. Could have been such a money spinner for them too, this seems like such a poor business decision. Still, I'll wait to see the tracklist but I'm sure the greatest hits disc will be 'same old same old' songs from the spin-offs, so it will be a lot less value for money than the regular Now albums usually are.

Either way, I know that Now 100 will indeed be my last purchased compilation as I’ve lost interest in the way these compilations are made and I would rather just make my own playlist on Spotify of my favourite current hits rather that be disappointed when they are not on the latest volume.

Even if Disc 2 was a collection of songs that previously missed the cut for whatever reason (Eminem, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, Adele, etc.) would it still be worth it? Yes it would likely be a Disc of 15+ #1s or otherwise incredibly popular songs, with this being their first/only Now appearance, but does that even matter? 10 years ago, sure, but with streaming as big and easy to access as it is today it’s not hard to make yourself a playlist of “Songs that Now ignored”

Hmm...well Ed made it but I wasn't expecting Sing Hardly his most classic single?

Good to see Hips Don't Lie is regarded as one of the absolute best songs of the last 100 Nows I guess, and amusing to see some of those acts on Disc 2 (S Club 7...) back on a numbered Now.

Disc 1 still looks blighted by various licensing issues but at least there are a few No.1 hits on it this time.

I like that they've gone in chronological order for Disc Two. The Katy Perry song is a bit of an odd inclusion when she's got a few more well remembered/regarded tracks, and they could've finished on 'Sorry' instead of 'Love Yourself' for Bieber though both were huge just to have an upbeat song to end on, but otherwise that is pretty solid for one disc of all the big classics. Likewise they should have used this as an opportunity to put in 'Shape Of You' for Ed.

On the bright side, maybe this will mean we'll get less filler on the albums in future? Since the series is now behind 1 disc worth of current hits, will they just ignore some of the big songs that obviously should've been here (I Like It, Girls Like You, Freaky Friday, German, Lucid Dreams, Perfect, Nice For What, God's Plan,etc.) or will some of them be late additions to Now 101? Meaning 101 would then traditionally be behind and so on and so forth.

I reckon for 101 we'll go back to two discs of current hits but there'll be a few carry-overs that really should have been on 100 like Cardi B and Drake, which will help sell 101 over Christmas as there'll be less filler.

I just hope we don't get the American format of one disc only in the future.

To me the fact that it was 100 editions was more important to them than the actual regular album of 2 discs of current hits, which in terms made the current hits seem like an afterthought. I would rather two discs of currents even WITH filler than 1 disc of current hits and 2nd disc of greatest hits (which doesn't even feel balanced out)

It’s so hard to know where to begin....

Ok, who is this actually for? What audience is being targeted? Is it the young collectors who may not have many previous Nows and disc 2 will open their minds to older music? I doubt it, if anything they’ll probably be pissed that so many of their current favourite songs have been replaced with old music they don’t care about like Wannabe and Reach. Is it long term collectors? For nostalgia? Absolutely not, we already have all of these tracks. They’re all exhausted on the spin offs. So I really can’t decide what the point of this is.

I was worried ‘greatest hits of Now’ would mean something this lazy. I had hoped they’d use the term loosely and include tracks that hadn’t made Nows. Perfect opportunity to finally include Madonna. I knew that wasn’t going to happen but seeing that track list has just woken me up to this reality.

It feels like a mockery of the whole series. Such an anticlimax. You wait years imagining what the 100th volume would be like and they come out with something lazy and cheap. The best thing about Nows is that you can pick one out to play and you’re transported to a certain time in your life. Now 100 won’t fulfil this. Disc 2 is clearly a tacky disc 3 they would have used if desperate.

I’m tempted to cancel my preorder but I might just get this to be a completist. I can see this being my last Now as the charts don’t mean much to me anymore and I feel a little letdown by the company here. I’m currently collecting old Nows and that is more interesting and exciting for me these days.

I can't imagine poor Jenny came to this decision alone, or indeed that any tracklist compiler would have the final say on something as big as this!

I mean, if it had been done well this album could have sold 700,000 copies at least, but with this tracklist I'd be amazed if it passes half a million sales. They've just cost themselves an awful lot of revenue...

When EMI were in charge, the albums were selling well. The spin-offs released by EMI are worth a lot of money whereas the spin-offs released by Sony go straight in the bargain bin. NOW 101 will have to make up for it. Instead of filling it with flops, fill it with hits which missed NOW 100 ie. Maroon 5

I suppose the spin-offs back then were rarer, we got one a year if we were lucky, but yes I agree that they were better curated. The brand has been cheapened hugely during this decade.

I remember buying the Now Dance spinoff's back in the early 2000's. Now they were good!

The spin off's were mentioned in the Radio 2 documentary last night, they were saying the spin off's are to experiment and bring a new audience to the NOW brand which makes sense with the recent Now Country/Jazz releases but not so much with Now That's What I Call A Song!

The Radio 2 documentary was fantastic. Answers a lot of questions about licensing issues and there's a bit about how Queen stipulated they must be Disc 1, Track 1 to be included (as I suspected though I'm not sure if this still exists but if not it's coincidental that they always lead every spin-off they are featured on!)

I was somewhat interested in seeing this tracklisting even if I don't collect these anymore to see what they came up with, but that's a really disappointing way of doing it. Don't see how they couldn't have just made Now 100 itself a normal one (with maybe an additional history pamphlet or something) with 2 CDs of modern hits and then just do a spin-off CD of Greatest Hits?

One CD of old hits is super restrictive anyway, there's THREE songs from 2008 on there and some years aren't represented at all which already makes it super unbalanced, it doesn't do the series justice.

I hope NOW 101 makes up for the hits which missed NOW 100. It’s like in 1985, 1986, ,1987, 1990 and 1991 when we only had two a year which made us have to wait nearly eight months for our favourite song to appear on the next volume ie. two of the songs from NOW 20 which were released before NOW 19 (“Sailing On The Seven Seas” and “Joyride”)

In terms of getting the actual hits, Disc 1 is probably the strongest disc they've done in recent times. However, it's really frustrating that it's only one disc of current hits. They EASILY could've done a normal version of the NOW album and added a bonus disc 3 "greatest hits" version. I don't understand the logic whatsoever and it' s annoying coz I feel the NOW compilation have good reasons to celebrate their 100th edition, but why change the format?

Regarding why NOW Ibiza is 3 discs, a bunch of older hits is probably cheaper than a bunch of fresh hits.

Disc 1 of NOW 100 is fantastic now that the rage has left my system. And Disc 2 is okay for a car journey or something like that

That said, I like the Now Ibiza tracklist and will probably pick it up. Many of these are rarely seen on the spin-offs and it kicks off with two of my top 10 favourite songs ever <3 Hopefully the UK radio edit of 9PM is on there and not the bland original that keeps appearing on other compilations.

I don't think it'll do quite that badly. I'm sure some people will buy it specifically for the greatest hits disc or because it is the 100th edition. We're all disappointed but the average music consumer will probably go to the supermarket, look at the tracklist and think 'ooh I liked some of those songs' and pick it up.

I think it’s going to be huge - yes the tracklisting is meh but it’s going to have HUGE media coverage, TV ads, promo etc., plus on nostalgia alone for it reaching a milestone it will pick up sales, expecting it to be heavily promoted in stores too - such a Supermarket pick up line.

I have all of the previous 99 albums but this is likely to be the last one I'll be buying on CD. TBH they're taking the p*** with these spin-offs now - as someone said in the Radio 2 documentary - Now That's What I Call A Song is really scraping the barrel themewise. The charts are so slow moving these days maybe a 1 CD set would be sufficient and I do think that may be one of the reason for the half new, half greatest hits idea. This would be the perfect time to do it.

Oh and for whoever was asking about the inclusion of 3 Lions... these tracklists are worked out well in advance of release - nobody would have forseen it's recent success so it wouldn't have been considered,

I don’t like the idea of how the classics disc consists of three 80s, six 90s, nine 00s and three 10s. It would’ve been better if it was 21 tracks consisting of seven 80s, seven 90s and seven 00s or 22 tracks consisting of six 80s, six 90s, six 00s and four 10s

Early thoughts for Now 101, if indeed we are to assume the series will continue with that number or a complete rebranding perhaps. I think it would be possible that future volumes will get marked down to one disc instead of two seeing as the cutbacks are inevitable and US volumes are also a single disc.

I think it could be possible if the charts ever do pick up again someday that a 4 volume a year release could be possible (one per season) but that’s only based on it being a one disc compilation.

What are your predictions for where the series goes from here following Now 100?

I think they should stick to 3 a year. 4 a year, even if it's only 1 disc each, would be too much, as they'd have to do 4 marketing campaigns per year rather than 3 (well, a lot more than 3 considering how many spinoffs they churn out but you get the idea).

The current format seems to be working fine, I wouldn't want it to change. There seem to be a few odd inclusions on each compilation but we probably just need to get used to that as there aren't too many real hit singles to choose from and many seem to have licensing issues now.

And yes they have loads to choose from for NOW 101 so they really have no excuse to make that a single disc (of new hits) compilation.

I just don’t think the pool of available songs is there for that need anymore though.

As Dan said, much fewer singles are making the Top 40 these days and those that do very well, such as the hits from Drake, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna and Taylor Swift to name examples, are causing licensing problems leaving only the lesser hits. It’s only a matter of time before a big name like Justin Bieber issues the same order not to allow his music on compilations too.

So I don’t know what the best option is anymore to be honest.

hm, well Now 99 shows that they can get two CDs of mostly hits, then some of the flops were by recognisable names. they might just have to stick to that way of doing it. also it seems now that a song can be somewhat of a hit without making the top 40, just look at the current chart run of NOTD 'I Wanna Know'. I think it would be too much to downgrade to just one CD per volume (would tarnish the legacy) but I fear that might happen.

Everything they’ve been doing the last couple of years has been directing followers toward their official app which is in fact a streaming service. I don’t use it myself but I gather that Sony Who now owns Now That’s What I Call Music will eventually do away with physical CD’s anyway and only offer their compilations via their streaming service by subscription only.

Now 100 could have easily been two discs of modern hits. There are at least 25 songs I can think that could have made it onto the Now. Therefore, I see no reason why they can't carry on with two discs from Now 101 onwards. This is obviously just a "special" edition Now to mark the occasion.

Found this quote interesting:

"It looks like we won't be able to clear Drake," sighs Steve Pritchard, a 58-year-old motorcycle enthusiast who's been a custodian of the series for more than half his life.

"You could put it on and hope. But if it doesn't clear you'd have a load of CDs which you have to pulp and, obviously, we don't want to do that."

Suggests that the compilers could take a chance and put Drake on, then produce the CDs, but if they don't then get approval they'd have to scrap the whole thing. So they obviously find it safer to just leave artists like that off.

Maybe they should start the rights approval process earlier to stand a better chance? If they contacted Drake the minute God's Plan or whatever went to No.1 then his team would have plenty of time to respond.

If they could just anticipate the next big artist to get a big hit they may be able to strike some kind of deal Case in point is Adele, who on her last era seemed to refuse to have her music on any compilation despite previously allowing it. If she is due to return soon with another album, why not approach her now and see what arrangements they can come to, maybe promising her the opening track of Disc 1 would be a way of promoting her music better?

I'm amazed that the whole tracklist approval process and Jenny writing the artist bios is all done in one day. I imagined it would be a more staggered process, as the main numbered compilation is the brand anchor.

I just wonder if artists like Drake or Ed (who sometimes appear and sometimes don't) were tee'd up way in advance, they might have more luck getting the rights in time? Surely they'd been trying to get the rights for God's Plan since the Now 99 tracklist meeting was under way!

The Ed situation really confuses me. Perfect was on Bravo Hits 100 in Germany and on Absolute Summer Hits 2018 in Sweden, Happier is scheduled for Bravo Hits 102 (tracklisting below FYI - it's like Now 100...but better ) and Shape Of You was on the Bravo The Hits 2017 album released at the end of last year. So the rights for these songs are clearly up for grabs from Warner in some territories, so why not the UK?

Edit: Essentially showing us what was mentioned in the BBC article that Rich linked, but interestingly they purposefully rejected including Lil Dicky on Now 100, mentioned that Cardi B's label was not playing ball, and that Taylor Swift was "pending" (so they must have dipped out on being able to include her).

They’ve previously said it’s not their job to pick between hits but to represent what’s popular at that moment in time so this goes against that rather.

I think it's also the novelty of the song. Previous Novelty songs age a NOW album quicker than usual. And NOW 100 is such an important one, they don't want it ruined with that song.

Absolute Radio 80's aired a documentary on NOW presented by Mark Goodier last evening called 'That was then, This is Now!' and Virgin Radio will air their own documentary Sunday evening at 7pm which will be hosted by Pete Mitchell in conversation with the series co-founder Sir Richard Branson.

Surely no one actually cares that Lil Dicky has been left off? Yes it's a number 1, but there are four other no.1s on the modern disc which is a lot by today's standards. I doubt anyone will be put off buying this because of the absence of Lil Dicky.

Interesting, though, about Cardi B's label not playing ball when they were with Bodak Yellow.

Mr preorder has arrived and I’m listening now. This could well be my last new now, as I don’t really follow the charts and this album is tacky as and I only bought it as a completist. I’ll delve into the older Nows from now on, aiming to get all 100.

I may change my mind when Now 101 comes out but let’s see.

We played this in store and it's actually one of my fave Now's. It's perfectly captured the songs of the Summer imo. I still think they shoulda done 2 discs of current hits, but this way, there's a lot less filler and I don't think there's been one inclusion I was against.

The greatest hits disc was nice. But I don't think they should have had 2 songs from the same Nows appear (we coulda done without Wonderwall and I Kissed A Girl (as much as Viva La Vida irritates me lol)) and they shoulda added some other tracks from the volumes in between imo. But ehhh. It is what it is.

I've bought it coz it's a landmark album. My first Now for a while iirc.

I enjoyed listening to Disc 1 earlier, apart from the awful cover of You Can't Hurry Love, the soul has been completely sucked out of the song. I agree that by cutting the filler, it has made for a way stronger Disc 1 than usual, 14 top ten hits on a disc is good going in this day and age. Having said that, I hope it reverts to two discs next time.

Disc 2 is what it is, I guess it wasn't made a three-disc set as they'd have had to push the price up to cover the licensing cost for the new hits on Disc 1. Still, I'd have had Now Years: The Missed Classics or something as Disc 2, with 20 songs that they now have the rights to that they didn't at the time (many of which they already fill the spin-offs with), and have therefore never been on a numbered now. And then left the already canon 'classics' for Now That's What I Call Now at the end of the year.

I do think the booklet could have had more care taken over it. A lot of the 'classics' disc is represented by blurry or low-res images, and Hips Don't Lie seems to be illustrated by the cover of the Indian CD single (?). Also would have been nice to see the tracklisting info, I know they don't do that anymore and offer a link to view it, but the link doesn't go anywhere Is it even legal to release a compilation CD without a public way to view the artist credits?

Listening to the first Now this afternoon and it's crazy how many of these songs are still so well known today, 35 years later. Even some of the mid-table chart hits are classics. What a time for music!

A question for anyone who got one of the tote bags. I ended up with 2 - both are blue with the HMV logo on the top tight and the main Now logo in the centre.

But I have seen a few listed on ebay which are coloured black or white, same Now logo but with the pig where the HMV logo is on mine. Were these given out somewhere else or are they the ones that HMV gave out instore?

There are a few good tracks on Now 59 don’t get me wrong, but for me there’s more tracks I don’t like than there are ones I do plus both discs have piss poor openings from Blue and Daniel Beddingfield.

OK, a heavily misguided error on the compiler's part re: Blue and Daniel Bedingfield. However I would argue that both of them were pre-release exclusives and were expected to do a lot better, so they couldn't have foreseen their underperformance. Certainly in Blue's case as it was their farewell single and expected to be a number one thus.

52 is worse because they had the song of that summer from Liberty X ("Just A Little") at their disposal and they still thought Ronan Keating was the sensible option! Not to mention the amount of flops there were (Omero Mumba, hello to you).

Ronan Keating opening Now 52 automatically makes it one of the worst not to mention the mostly poor disc 2 (though I still have never heard the Omero Mumba track as it isn't on YouTube OR Spotify ) though some credit must be given to the set for all the clubland tracks on disc 1.

Aside: Ronan Keating really was the shitstain on the Now series. I'd have hated on him on Buzzjack so much if it were a thing back then (and I was my age). Dull beyond belief.

Now 63 is great. It gets a lot of hate, but it's got some great tracks on it -
"Ugly" "Because of You" "Sewn" "No Tomorrow" "Ride a White Horse" "Dirty Harry" to name just a few. 2002 was a disappointing year for Nows, 53 being the best of a fairly dull bunch.

As for Now 100, this was always going to be the biggest Now in ages regardless of its content.

Kudos to NOW for reaching the milestone 100th numbered album! Its tracklist looks fine. In fact, I was surprised when one of the classic tracks on CD 2 is S Club 7's Reach (NOW 46, 2000) - that is one of my favourite S Club songs, and even one of the songs that defined my younger years.

I remember the first NOW album that I owned. And no, it's not a numbered one. It's a spin-off release - NOW That's What I Call Music! 25 Years, a 3-disc special they released back in 2008; I owned a copy of it the following year. I wouldn't put it amongst the worst though as it's made up by quite a few great songs as you mentioned. Some more dance would've been nice but late 2005 didn't exactly have a load of dance hits.

I would agree there does seem to be alot of random filler on Now 62 which is a shame as I loved the music back in 2005 but there was too many omissions. To be fair that David Gray song was a big airplay hit at the time as well as a Top 10 single, even though it's not really stood the test of time today it was a hit at the time of release.

The David Gray song was a big hit, perhaps track 5 was a little out of place but it wasn’t exactly a big flop. Now 62 actually does a great job of covering late 2005. The only real omissions being Madonna and Arctic Monkeys.

Hi Dexton! Thanks for your honest reply, especially the nightmare one. I understand where you're coming from, owing from our different tastes in music, the apparent licensing issues for certain songs, and of course, the UK charts where the NOW team (i.e. Jenny Fisher et al) base their track list for every album they put out.

As for Queen (i.e. Freddie Mercury and company), I thought there was this thing going on that they should be CD 1 Track 1 if they were to appear on compilation albums, although I observed this isn't the case in some of the NOW albums they appeared in. If I were to pick a Queen track, though... well, I am actually torn between Radio Ga Ga (NOW 2, 1984), Bohemian Rhapsody (NOW 21, 1992) [mama, ooh...], and Too Much Love Will Kill You (NOW 33, 1996).

You are actually correct when you said that the NOW Music forum here is the reason why I entered here.

yeah, I think licensing issues will prevent them from getting any Queen (they only appear on comps if they are track 1 disc 1), unless they decide to go out of sync and make Bohemian Rhapsody (or Radio Ga Ga) track 1 disc 1, which would ruin the whole point of 100 songs from 100 NOWs. Having it be in chronological NOW order is more ideal than getting the rights to a Queen song that most people already own somehow anyway.

According to Amazon, NOW NOW now has a release date of 16th November which is what I imagine the NOW 101 release date will be. They shouldn’t release both at the same time. They should stick with 9th November for NOW NOW

Really liking Now Ibiza but a shame to see the wrong mix of 9PM (Till I Come) used and what is that version of Freed From Desire? She seems to sing the word ‘money’ more accented than usual, have never heard this version!

I also prefer the Airscape remix of Silence, which was the version that was drove sales in the UK at the time, even though I suppose the Tiesto mix is more popular these days.

The intros on both Feel It and Sun Is Shining are cut too, compared to the versions on Now 40 and 44 at least anyway.

I know! And the annoying thing is both those versions of the Delerium and ATB tracks that became hits in the UK are both readily available on Spotify as well. That's one thing that's frequently annoyed me about the legacy/spin off NOWs under Jenny Fisher's book, that they've neglected to use the correct single versions. I've got Now 90s and it frustrates me that I have to skip both '9PM' and Shania Twain's 'That Don't Impress Me Much' as they're both the wrong versions.

I don't mind late 1980s songs on 1990s compilation CDs, as it's perfectly realistic that those songs would still have been on the radio and in clubs into the early 1990s - the annoyance I have is the other way around when they stick stuff from the 2000s on. I went to a "90s Night" in London a few years ago and they were playing the likes of So Solid Crew and Mis-Teeq, which didn't make any sense.

A good idea for a NOW spin-off is NOW Heaven and include it entirely with artists who died such as Aretha Franklin, Avicii and Michael Jackson etc and for NOW NOW, they should change it to 101 hits from 101 NOWs and track 101 to be a song which will be on NOW 101

Something strange I discovered today when trying to prepare the review thread for Now 94 is that all the Wikipedia pages for each volume in the series, except for the first and fourth, have had their pages taken down from the site. Is this intentional, or would it be a mistake... all I know is that valuable information is now gone.

I investigated. The discussion (and/or lack thereof) is pretty all-over-the-place, but these 2 pages summarise it:

More promotion for Discogs, I suppose. It’s taken me 47 days since the release of Now 100 to get around to going out and purchasing this volume on CD!

Not really loving up to my resident name of a true “Now Stan” leaving it this long, but glad I eventually got round to it.

The real question for me is... will this be the final ever Now volume I buy brand new from the shops... or better yet... will this be the final ever CD I purchase brand new from the shops in my lifetime thanks to the streaming age???

That’s considerably cheaper than double compilation CD’s used to cost of you go back 20 years, they would be around £15-£16 for a volume of Now That’s What I Call Music!

Plus you wouldn’t dare buy your CD’s from a motorway services, they charge £20 even nowadays for popular CD’s!!

I doubt I’ll go further than 100. This volume was so poor considering. I loved the greatest hits disc initially for a bit of nostalgia but I haven’t listened to it for almost a month now.

I’ve been going back and filling the gaps in my collection for about 2 years now and I think I’d rather do that than buy any new volumes from now on.

If they do go for an AJT song it'll be 'Butterflies' rather than 'LO(V/S)ER' but I imagine neither will be included. Really can't see Chic getting on there either. Otherwise I think most of those will get on (though knowing NOW there'll be a few odd (in/ex)clusions of course)

The release date for NOW NOW has been pushed back a week to 16th November which means that NOW 101 will most likely be released on 23rd November
*EDIT* It wasn’t seen on the official NOW page so as far as it stands, NOW NOW’s release date is still 9th November. I’d like though for them to change the subtitle to “101 hits from 101 NOWs” with track 101 being a song which will definitely be on NOW 101
