BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ The charts from your perspective...

Posted by: mdh May 14 2017, 07:19 PM

This has raised a far bit of discussion in the past - a lot of the time we see hits that we don't believe have been 'big' enough to justify their chart positions, so I thought it'd be interesting to share our perspective on popular music right now.

On the basis of the social circles you're in and the exposure you've heard / seen, what do you believe the top 3/5/10 biggest songs are right now - from your point of view. This is ignoring the official charts and just going on the basis of people talking about the song in your life.

For me I'm surrounded by 17-18 year old's, so from my experience the charts in my social life look something like this...

01 Luis Fonsi - Despacito (feat. Daddy Yankee & Justin Bieber)
02 DJ Khaled - I'm The One (feat. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper)
03 Jonas Blue - Mama (feat. William Singe)
04 J HUS - Did You See
05 French Montana - Unforgettable (feat. Swae Lee)
06 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You
07 Clean Bandit - Symphony (feat. Zara Larsson)
08 Ed Sheeran - Galway Girl
09 Future - Mask Off
10 Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE.

...I definitely feel as though it's a lot more urban and R&B orientated in my social circles! Also there's been a lot of hype for the new Jonas Blue song, it's on loads of peoples Snapchat stories and often gets requested in the common room.

I just don't see how 'normal people' (aka people who don't follow the chart) know about new songs until they become established.

Despacito & Malibu seem to be the big two atm in my social circle!

EDIT: And Shawn Mendes as well!

Yeah I'd agree that Malibu is one of the biggest atm

My friends are all early 20's but have zero interest in the charts whatsoever and neither do friends of my friends laugh.gif Going off Facebook I'd say Despacito feels the biggest atm

Songs like Hi Grade (Angel), Warning (Kojo Funds), Addison Lee (Not3s) and Location (Khalid) are songs that haven't charted but I hear a lot in my uni circles.

mdh's list looks quite accurate though, people always underestimate the reach of urban music.

The popular Urban artist at my school by miles seems to be J Cole which always surprises me! Drake isn't v. popular at all and the likes of Kendrick/Frank are ofc popular af.

J Cole has got so many fans, I think people see him as a 'credible' alternative to Drake, although Drake has a wider range of fans.

Forgot 'Slide' from my post, not a sunny day goes by without hearing that. Kendrick and The Weeknd are big too, Chance the Rapper and Migos are growing too. Without going into Stormzy, Skepta, J Hus and the grime scene in general.

This is just my observations right now. laugh.gif

Yeah Migos is another popular one in my crowd as well! And Lil Yachty/Liz Uze Vert (something like that?) though I can't say I've ever heard any of their songs bar After The Afterparty *.*

It feels like Stormzy/Skepta were more popular last year at my school which also kinda shocks me, especially with Stormzy!

A lot of my friends have been talking about Location too, the most talked about atm are probably Swalla and Despacito
No Promises is probably talked about a bit too, but mainly because I never miss a chance to point out how they follow me on twitter kink.gif

Probably just a large swarm of hip hop, R&B and all of Bruno's recent album pretty much

Liz Uze Vert

!!! omg

Lil Uzi Vert is big at my school along with the likes of Xxxtentacion (he's really popular) and Kodak Black. Mumble rappers are a big thing in my circles.

Also some dude called Blackbear who has one good song (the rest are shit) seems to be on everyone's SC stories.

Its from last year, but not a night goes by where I hear someone playing 'Broccoli' at pre drinks.

My friends don't listen to new music really, but I know when they talk about Ed Sheeran the first song they think of is 'Castle On the Hill'
