Posted by: Viper* Jan 5 2016, 03:19 AM

Great start for Kyle Edmund, I'm very interested in the British hopes this year.

Jo Konta, Kyle Edmund and Aljaz Bedene especially. wub.gif

Posted by: Mack Jan 6 2016, 10:00 AM

Naomi Broady through to the third round in Auckland although how her opponent Jelena Ostapenko wasn't disqualified for appearing to throw a racquet towards a ball boy is something I can't work out. That should be a disqualification without a doubt.

Posted by: Serg Mix Jan 6 2016, 11:57 AM

Watched the whole match. She obviously threw racquet on purpose but think she didn't hit ball boy on purpose.

Think she should've gotten defaulted tho.
Don't really understand why Naomi focused on arguing after the match tho.

Posted by: Noahspike Jan 6 2016, 10:37 PM

This is awesome:

It's not like it was for an insignificant point in the match either, which makes it all the more impressive!

Jack Sock's mah nu fave. cool.gif

For UK TV viewers. Eurosport will be showing the tournament exclusively live and the BBC will be showing highlights.

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 14 2016, 05:44 PM

Novak. He owns that Open.

Posted by: daz clark Jan 14 2016, 11:12 PM

novak should win but you never know as for the womens think azankra will win she is playing well

Posted by: Mack Jan 18 2016, 09:43 PM

What are you making of this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/35319202

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 18 2016, 10:02 PM

It's certainly an eyebrow-raiser but we need more details to come out really to get a better idea of it all.

Match fixing occurs in every sport so I can't say I'm all that surprised.

Posted by: Mack Jan 19 2016, 08:27 AM

Johanna Konta has knocked out Venus Williams in the first round in straight sets with a 6-4 6-2 win.

Posted by: Mack Jan 19 2016, 05:13 PM

More shocks today with Nadal out losing in five sets to Verdasco and also in the women's draw second seed Simona Halep crashing out as well.

I don't think Nadal will win another Grand Slam title. I got a funny feeling he could retire this year.

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 19 2016, 08:29 PM

Nadal losing in a Slam is never a shock anymore sad.gif

Posted by: Mack Jan 21 2016, 05:23 PM

We say goodbye to Lleyton Hewitt's tennis career as he exited the Australian Open to David Ferrer in his final singles match. A two-time Grand Slam champion.

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 21 2016, 07:30 PM

Great player. His rally against Roger Federer (you all know the one) is the best I've ever seen in the sport.

Posted by: Martyn Jan 21 2016, 07:50 PM

Good news for Brits, both Konta & Murray are into round 3. Konta will playing Denisa Allertova who knocked out a player who many people (including myself) quite like Sabine Lisicki.

Posted by: Mack Jan 21 2016, 08:28 PM

Shame that Sabine Lisicki is out although pleased to see Murray and Konta go through.

Also Azarenka and Muguruza both comfortably through the second and third seed in the women's draw.

Posted by: Mack Jan 24 2016, 01:34 PM

Novak Djokovic taken to five sets by Gilles Simon.

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will play each other in the quarter-finals after winning their respective matches.

Posted by: Iz~ Jan 25 2016, 12:26 PM

Konta streaming ahead into the quarters. Fantastic for her biggrin.gif

First time we've gotten both genders into the quarters of a Grand Slam for 39 years as well, excellent news for Britain.

Posted by: Oliver Jan 25 2016, 12:57 PM

I had the displeasure of going onto the Guardian and Daily Mail websites and nearly every single comment regarding this match was about whether she should be classed as British or not.

Half an hour of my live I will never get back! cry.gif

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 25 2016, 09:44 PM

Konta is amazing, you have that feeling of assurance when she goes into games that she'll win which I never had for Robson/Watson unfortunately.

Really hope she can go all the way!

Posted by: Martyn Jan 27 2016, 05:04 AM

Konta into the semi final! She will play Kerber on Thursday for a place in the final.

Posted by: jark Jan 27 2016, 12:08 PM

COME ON KERBER. So stoked for my girl.

Posted by: Mack Jan 27 2016, 07:51 PM

BBC must be regretting giving up the live rights to the Australian Open with the success of Konta and Murray. Limited to a 45 minute slot at 2:15pm with about seventeen and a half minutes coverage of each match.

Posted by: Mack Jan 28 2016, 02:09 PM

A valiant effort from Konta in the semis with Kerber through to the final, I'm sure you will be pleased about that, jark. Kerber will play Serena in the final.

Also Djokovic through to his 6th Australian Open final after beating Federer in 4 sets.

COME ON KERBER. So stoked for my girl.

I'm pretty sure that you'll be delighted with the result today I believe she is the first German to win a Grand Slam since Graf?

Posted by: daz clark Jan 30 2016, 10:19 PM

well done kerber was the best player now for murray to win tommorow

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 31 2016, 11:40 AM

Straight sets win for Novak. He in Melbourne is beginning to look like early Rafa at the French Open, unbeatable.

Posted by: Mack Jan 31 2016, 11:42 AM

Well done to Novak Djokovic on his 6th Australian Open title. What a player he is. Truly unbeatable over here. A fifth runner-up for Andy Murray.

Posted by: Rooney Jan 31 2016, 12:55 PM

Unlucky Andy, it's a shame he can't seem to be Djokovic at the moment unless he's massively off his game.

Posted by: Mack Jan 31 2016, 03:42 PM

Andy has broken an unwanted record for the most times of being runner-up in the same Grand Slam.

Posted by: daz clark Jan 31 2016, 08:45 PM

well played to novak on another grand slam now can he win the french

He didn't break it, he equalled Ivan Lendl's US Open record.

Real shame but even the tight second set I saw, Murray just wasn't consistently positive or aggressive enough to ever be in contention. Shame.

Konta out of Fed Cup with an intestinal issue that apparently got worse in Melbourne - makes her achievement there even more impressive. There's a terrible 'real guts' pun there somewhere.

Posted by: Mack Jan 31 2016, 09:27 PM

Sorry my mistake there thanks. notfurlong.

Murray not able to remain consistent with the aggression and positive throughout the match.

Posted by: Mack Feb 8 2016, 03:38 PM

Britain's Naomi Broady has broken into the Top100 to 96th. 3 British females in the Top100.

Posted by: Aaliyah4Eva Feb 10 2016, 11:14 AM

Great news for Naomi been a long time coming hopefully she can now get even more consistant and climb higher, She is also the 3rd Brit female to win Midland after Baltacha in 2010 and Watson in 2014.

Was also good weekend for Liam he won Glasgow and for Kyle Edmund winning Dallas over fellow Brit Dan Evans, took Edmund to high of 84 and moved Dan to British #4 ahead of Ward now

Posted by: Mack Feb 21 2016, 08:37 AM

Good to see del Potro back playing and hopefully injury-free as he reached the semi-finals of the Delray Beach Open.

Posted by: Mack Feb 22 2016, 03:49 PM

Johanna Konta has climbed to 26th in the women's world rankings.

Posted by: Totto Mar 7 2016, 07:38 PM

Apparently has big news and she's have a press about it in a few.

A retirement ? A new chocolate line ?

It depends on if they believe her when she says she didn't know it was also called meldonium. sad.gif If she's been taking it for health reasons over the last 10 years I can't see them being too harsh on her though.

Posted by: Martyn Mar 7 2016, 09:30 PM

Poor Maria, I feel like they will be harsh on her to make an example of her. Hopefully I am wrong.

Posted by: ukchartstatsfan Mar 7 2016, 11:09 PM

Wow! That was unexpected news to hear. I'm pretty sure they'll be harsh on her despite what she said in that statement. Big news indeed.

Posted by: Ryan. Mar 8 2016, 10:43 AM

It seems like an honest mistake to me, I hope they don't go too harsh on her to make an example but I fear they will.

Rafael Nadal has equalled the record of most clay-court titles with victory at the Barcelona Open yesterday.

Posted by: Mack May 13 2016, 08:38 AM

A very strange way to prepare for a match and win as Serena Williams made herself ill by eating dog food before reaching the quarter-finals of the Italian Open.

Posted by: Mack May 19 2016, 03:56 PM

Roger Federer will miss the French Open due to failing to recover in time from a back injury it will be the first Grand Slam he has missed this century.

Who do you think will win the French Open?

For UK viewers, coverage will be shown on ITV4 and on Eurosport with both of the finals live on ITV.

Posted by: daz clark May 19 2016, 09:21 PM

i think murrey wont have a better chance as for the women wide open

Posted by: Dobbo May 19 2016, 09:28 PM

I agree this really is Murray's best chance of winning the French to date. Obviously Federer is out & of course Djokovic is the fave but something always seems to go wrong for him here & I can see that run continuing. I myself would actually be all for a Nadal resurgence & an unprecedented 10th French Open.

Posted by: Martyn May 20 2016, 09:17 PM

I really want to back Konta for doing something special here. However I feel like the weight of expectation is now on her and she will probably limp out by the second round.

How many more of his nine lives is Murray going to use in his next match?

Posted by: Mack May 26 2016, 10:04 PM

Regarding Sharapova she has been chosen for the Olympic Team in Rio.

Posted by: Dobbo May 27 2016, 04:59 PM

Nadal has pulled out of the French Open, must be the first time ever both him & Federer have done that.

If Novak doesn't win it this year then he'll never win it...

Posted by: Mack May 27 2016, 07:23 PM

Must be gutting for Nadal.

A very strange scoreline as Shelby Rogers beat 2-time Wimbeldon champion Petra Kvitova 6-0 6-7 6-0. I don't think I've ever seen that scoreline in my life.

Posted by: Martyn May 30 2016, 12:16 PM

Yes it is the French where there no current plans to put a roof on the main show court. Just last week there was an article where the earliest date for a roof wouldn't be until 2020. It is the first time a day has been completely washed out since 2000.

Murray through to the semis after a four-set win over Gasquset.

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 4 2016, 03:05 PM

Garbine Muguruza wins the French Open beating Williams in straight sets!

You know, I really think Williams won't match Steffi Graf's tally of 22 Slams, she keeps choking!

Posted by: daz clark Jun 4 2016, 03:15 PM

well played muzzgra was brilliant so 2 new grand slam women champs this year

Posted by: Mack Jun 4 2016, 08:30 PM

Congratulations to Muguruza, she fully deserves a Grand Slam title. Well done to her.

Posted by: Mack Jun 5 2016, 04:32 PM

Absolute sheer brilliance and determination from Novak Djokovic to win the French Open and becomes the first player since Rod Laver to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same name.

Posted by: Rooney Jun 5 2016, 04:43 PM

I think right now Djokovic, is better than Federer/Nadal were in their peak. Unbelievable player.

Posted by: Qween Jun 5 2016, 05:01 PM

That was a deeply frustrating match (as a Murray fan), but brilliant playing from Novak. He really is in incredible form.

Posted by: Noahspike Jun 5 2016, 05:11 PM

Yeah, I'd kind of convinced myself that he was mounting a proper comeback in the last few games of that fourth set, but he was ultimately outclassed. Incredible achievement for Novak - 12 Grand Slam titles covering all four majors now and he's only 29.

Was also great to see Muguruza win her first one quite comfortably yesterday. Must be so surreal to defeat a legend like Serena who she'd have grown up watching!

Posted by: daz clark Jun 5 2016, 09:32 PM

well played novak great win still think murrey could have won if he had gone for power like stan did last year

Posted by: Brett-Butler Jun 8 2016, 03:37 PM

Maria Sharipova has been banned from tennis for 2 years for http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/36482288, which will effectively end her career. It seems a bit harsh given the circumstances, I though 6 months at the very most would be more appropriate.

Posted by: Mack Jun 8 2016, 06:14 PM

It is a bit harsh given the circumstances around it. She will definitely appeal the decision.

Posted by: Mack Jun 9 2016, 06:48 PM

Rafael Nadal will miss Wimbledon to his wrist injury he suffered at the French Open.

Posted by: Mack Jun 12 2016, 11:55 AM

Andy Murray will reunite with his coach Ivan Lendl when Queens gets under way tomorrow.

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 12 2016, 12:12 PM

Great news! This is the only reason he'll win another major IMO.

Posted by: Mack Jun 19 2016, 05:36 PM

Andy Murray wins his fifth Queens Club title by beating Raonic in three sets and becomes the first person to win it five times. Good comeback from 3-1 down in the second set to win 6-7 6-4 6-3.

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 19 2016, 05:39 PM

Queens is all well & good but the public want Wimbledons w00t.gif

With Lendl back I think he has a great chance of winning it but he's gonna have to rely on someone else beating Djokovic en route.

Two-time Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka has announced that she is pregnant and will be expecting at the end of the year.

Roger Federer will miss the Olympics and the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

Posted by: Mack Aug 16 2016, 07:30 PM

Great to hear that Del Potro has got a wildcard for the US Open following his heroics at the Olympics. It was good to see him back at his very best following him being plagued by injuries.

Posted by: Mack Aug 24 2016, 09:08 PM

The Laver Cup an Ryder Cup style event between Europe and Rest of the World will take place next September.

Posted by: Martyn Aug 27 2016, 01:36 PM

Laura Robson has qualified for the US Open (she actually needed a wildcard to get into the qualifying). We will also see a Brit in the Ladies round 2 for sure as she will face Naomi Broady in round 1.

Posted by: Ðøßßø Aug 27 2016, 01:49 PM

Shame how far she fell in the rankings but that injury of course played a huge part. Anyway that's great news would love for her to have a Konta like run in a Slam, she had bags of potential as we've seen in her earlier years!

Posted by: Mack Aug 30 2016, 11:36 AM

Great win for Kyle Edmund who beat Gasquet in the US Open in straight sets. He's one to keep a eye on Edmund for the future if injuries don't get in the way.

Posted by: Martyn Aug 30 2016, 08:45 PM

Konta through in straight sets
Dan Evans also into Round 2 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1 over Rajeev Ram???

Watson out 2-6 5-7 to Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp, she did seem to have a back problem. However that is now 6 round 1 exits our of 6 at the USA open.

We will have at least one more Briton in Round 2 with Robson currently playing Broady. Currently 1 set all Robson 7-6 3-6 Broady.

Murray will almost certainly get there. Which should take us to 5. Aljaz Bedene faces a tough test against Kyrgios

Not sure who else is in Brit wise off the top of my head.

Posted by: Mack Aug 31 2016, 05:57 PM

Kyle Edmund through to the third round after winning in straight sets.

Posted by: Mack Sep 4 2016, 06:38 PM

Andy Murray, Kyle Edmund and Johanna Konta in the fourth round of the US Open. I do feel though for Dan Evans who was a match point away from beating Warwinka.

Posted by: Mack Sep 6 2016, 07:24 PM

Kerber first woman through to the semi-finals of the US Open.

Posted by: Ðøßßø Sep 6 2016, 07:58 PM

Bloody hell are we already at the Semis? This Open seems to have flown by.

Posted by: Mack Sep 7 2016, 10:02 PM

A very tense final set between Murray & Nishikori. 5-5 final set.

Posted by: Mack Sep 7 2016, 10:09 PM

Nishikori showed nerves of steel there to win. No surprise there he is a former finalist there. Murray not been to a US semi since 2012. He let it slip with his temperent there.

Posted by: Ðøßßø Sep 7 2016, 10:35 PM

Wow still an enormous shock there, other than that final 2 years ago he's done nothing of note since but he'll get another shot at it & without Cilic in the draw this time.

Proves how difficult it is to win back-to-back Opens.

Posted by: *Ben* Sep 9 2016, 07:06 AM

Serena is out in the SF at US Open, and Kerber is the new number 1, also into the final!

Posted by: Mack Sep 10 2016, 04:52 PM

Between Djokovic and Wawrinka for the final then.

Posted by: Mack Sep 10 2016, 09:53 PM

We go to an decider in this gripping match between Kerber and Plisikova

Posted by: Mack Sep 12 2016, 10:00 PM

Great performance from Wawrinka to win the US Open over Djokovic.

Posted by: Ðøßßø Sep 12 2016, 10:11 PM

Yes absolutely he really turned his game right up in this final against an admittedly weakened Novak but still a superb performance.

Amazing to believe he's only a Wimbledon away from a career grand slam! ohmy.gif Fantastic for him to be at his peak this late in his career, the Jamie Vardy of tennis you might say laugh.gif

Posted by: Mack Sep 16 2016, 09:35 PM

Another epic between Murray and Del Porto with Del Porto winning in five sets after five hours. Great to see Del Porto back at his best. If he doesn't get injured he's worth a shot for a Grand Slam win next year.

Great Britain have it all to do in their Davis Cup semi-final. 2-0 down.

The results of Sharapova's appeal against her drugs ban are expected today.

Posted by: Mack Oct 5 2016, 06:57 PM

So Sharapova will be able to play next April in time for the French Open possibly following her appeal.

Andy Murray & Kyle Edmund are set to play against each other in the quarter-finals of the China Open. Could be interesting that.

Johanna Konta into world top 10 after reaching China Open final

British number one Johanna Konta moved into the world top 10 after reaching the final of the China Open by beating Madison Keys 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-4. The 25-year-old took the first set after a tie-break before American eighth seed Keys fought back in a semi-final lasting two hours, 35 minutes. The 11th seed will now face Ukraine's Elina Svitolina or Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska in the final. The last British woman to make the world's top 10 was Jo Durie in 1984.

"It's really special, I feel very blessed to be coming back for the final," said Konta after a hard-earned victory in Beijing on Saturday.

Konta was ranked 146th in the world as recently as June 2015. She is only the fourth British woman to make the top 10 since the WTA rankings began in 1975 - after Durie, Virginia Wade and Sue Barker. Konta led 4-2 in the first set before losing three games in a row. She rallied to take the opening set on a tie-break before unravelling in the second as Keys took the tie into a third set. Keys broke in the first game but Konta immediately responded before going on to secure a place in Sunday's final.

Woo! Glad there is someone in the British women's game that is doing something, shame about Heather and Laura but Johanna has completely stormed past them and stolen the limelight!

It's an remarkable rise up the rankings for her, the only way is up.

For the first time in 13 years, there is no Federer or Nadal in the Top4 of the world rankings.

Gutted for Konta missing out on the World Tour Finals by Kuznetsova winning the Kremlin Cup.

well done to Del Porto on winning his first title in 2 years

Whilst it is a shame for Konta to miss out. At the start of the year I don't think anyone would have thought she would have been near the Top 10 in the world, so for her to get there is Amazing. Hopefully she will have a good start next season, as she has a lot of points to defend in Australia.

I certainly didn't see at the beginning of the year myself. I do wonder if she'll be the same position for the World Tour Finals next year.

Djokovic has lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) to Marin Cilic in the BNP Paris Masters, handing the world #1 to Andy Murray if he can take it. He just needs to beat Tomas Berdych (starting now) and either Jo-Wilfred Tsonga or Milos Raonic in the semi-finals to clinch it.

If he does he'll be the first British player to be World #1 since Fred Perry in 1941!!! cheer.gif

I am so amazed that Andy Murray has put himself within a whisker of number 1.....Novak's lead was massive in May after the FO.

He would be number 1 already if 750 points had been awarded, as previously for London, for his stunning Olympic Gold Medal in Rio.

Really hope he defeats Raonic....he deserves it.

And without even hitting a ball Murray has become World #1 following Raonic's withdrawl.

An outstanding achievement & all of a sudden I think it's a guarantee he'll win SPOTY for a record third time despite all the Olympic heroics this year cheer.gif

An outstanding achievement from one of Britain's greatest sportsman of the 21st century.

Fantastic news *.* I saw whispers of this being possible earlier in the year but really didn't think it'd ever actually happen.

(he did actually win the final of the Paris Masters as well which slightly makes up for the anticlimax of him getting to the #1 spot due to a walkover laugh.gif)

Murray through to the final of the ATP World Tour after an epic against Raonic.

Posted by: Dobbo Nov 20 2016, 08:02 PM

And Murray has beaten Djokovic in straight sets to cement his position at World #1.

I think he really needed a victory in a final against Djok to truly prove his worth as it had been a long time (well in anything major). It was a below par Novak but you can put that down to how well Murray played.

Ana Ivanovic is retiring at the age of 29

She was a very good player on her day won the 2008 French Open shame, I really liked her. Injuries are most likely the main reason to retire.
