It’s a bit like chicken or the egg for me: does Radio 1 not playlist acts like Kylie because they’re no longer cool and relevant with younger audiences, or do younger audience just not listen to these acts because they don’t get the exposure from radio (and streaming playlists).

I think younger audiences like to listen to contemporary artists who look like them, sing about things they encounter and unfortunately are the same age as them whether people like that or not. That doesn’t mean there’s no room for Kylie it means they divide up the stations between age groups and audiences.

Radio 1 moved towards this for the first time around 30 years ago when a lot of the original older DJs were sacked in 1992 and the playlist got a bit of a shake up best highlighted by Status Quo complaining about not being supported for the first time by the station - note they had their first top 40 hit as long before this as 1968!

Songs have been before but very rarely - I seek to remember Tom Walkers Leave a Light On got a second add as well as Nightmares by Easy Life. But since it was only on the playlist a couple of months ago, I can’t seem them replaylisting it, they’ll probably just add it to the recurrent list!

Yeh most songs given a second chance are played on the old Upfront playlist and then pushed a year later when the track and band are more established with the audience whereas Heat Waves was A Listed

its more like the egg,the younger audience isnt exposed to these artists because radio and streaming playlists refuse to add them... playlists and radio airplay choices should be based on music styles not artists age...

so based on your logic, younger artists should sing about partying and sex and drugs. and older artists should be singing about dementia, breaking hips and losing teeth!!!!
it shouldnt be like that, this is ageist, as i said before airplay should be based on musical style, not an artists age... therefore Kylie should be playlisted in the same radio that playlists Becky Hill , Anne Marie or Zara Larrson and Celine Dion should be playlisted in the same radio that plays Adele or Lewis Capaldi...

Nice to see ‘Tangerine’ and ‘Watch Your Step’ starting their radio AirPlay. Great choice of next single by both GAs and Disclosure
