I'm gonna say Another One Bites The Dust by Queen. Yeah, I know it's a blatant steal from Chic...talking of which, they had some great bass lines too. That's all I can think of at the moment....

Oh, (not sure if this is really retro enough) the Armand Van Helden remixes of Tori Amos' Professional Widow and CJ Bolland's Suger Is Sweeter - awesome bass riffs thumbup.gif

A lot of Level 42 stuff (mid-career - early on and much later on they were a bit pants).

However - I was torn between two Stranglers tracks, Peaches being one but the one I've gone for is this -

Love it! The best version ever of this song.

Well anything by Primus tbh, especially Tommy The Cat. Black Sabbath have some amazing bass lines on their first 2 albums, NIB and the bassline during the guitar solo of Iron Man stand out as pretty amazing. For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica uses good distortion pedal to great effect at the start. Take These Broken Wings by Mr Mister has a nice little bass riff going throughout the song.

Cool For Cats by Squeeze has also got a funk-tastic bassline biggrin.gif

"She's In Parties" by Bauhaus has an amazing bassline, very Dub....

"Epic" by Faith No More...

"Sir Psycho Sexy" - RHCP, in fact most of Flea's basslines are cool

Dean Garcia - Curve bassist, did some absolutely pounding stuff, especially "Die Like A Dog"...

Iron Maiden - "Phantom of the Opera"

John's right about Les Claypool from Primus, an amazing bassist, plays bass almost like a second lead guitar...

Rage Against The Machine - Calm Like A Bomb

Rancid - Maxwell Murder [the bass solo is also amazing in this]
