Late April / early May can't come QUICK ENOUGH w00t.gif

Posted by: Maurice! 24th March 2017, 02:51 PM

Just announced on radio station Z100 that Harry's 1st single will be out on the 7th of April.

Ahhhhhhh!!!! wub.gif

Posted by: mdh 24th March 2017, 09:54 PM

Supposedly it's 'Frank Ocean meets Sting', I mean both of them are a bit crap so fingers crossed the comparison is wildly innacurate laugh.gif What I REALLY want from him is an acoustic, Shawn Mendes-esque pop banger with a huge chorus and some woah-oh-oh's. That'd be awesome.

Posted by: Regina 25th March 2017, 02:53 PM

Won't be any worse than Zayn's stuff but doubt this will topple Niall.

^ from Hits Daily Double! Only Adele's Hello and the two Ed singles this year have been teased in adverts like this. Surely lining up to be massive already? ohmy.gif

Also, Sony Music's "fiscal year" seems to end in March, meaning the first quarter is April/May/June! The album is so close wub.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 28th March 2017, 02:42 PM

I hear this is already playlisted by Capital, on their very top playlist too ohmy.gif laugh.gif

Plus, new promo shot from his Facebook page:

Harry will be on Saturday Night Live with Jimmy Fallon on 15th April biggrin.gif

I have a feeling that he is going to blow up, BIG time. Like, honestly up there with Ed/Sam Smith/Calvin Harris in terms of British male artists! I think his album will be huge, too!

Excited to hear what he comes up with. In all honesty, I doubt I'd personally like it as much, but I'm happy to be proven wrong and the piano melody used in the trailer is gorgeous!

Everything is shaping up perfectly so far, and I bet it will go straight to Radio 1's a-list too. Anyone who's worked with Harry has said his music is amazing so my hopes are sky high, really hoping he lives up to the demand and I think he will!

The video to this has been filmed and will be released alongside the song on the 7th April!

Seems to be premiering at 10am in Adelaide, Australia (I'd seen 10am branded about but not what timezone laugh.gif). These are the premiere times globally, thanks to @BestDailyHarry on Twitter:

Great single title and cover (if that is the cover). Harry was always going to blow up as a solo artist. He's always been the JT/Robbie of 1D.

Posted by: HausofIRNBRU 1st April 2017, 10:35 AM

Love the cover and the Prince reference <3

Posted by: ♀mdh♀ 2nd April 2017, 07:02 PM

Looks like he'll get a full week of sales then, 6 days and 22.5 hours worth to be exact which is good. I was worried itd be released Friday night in the UK.

Posted by: pippa 3rd April 2017, 04:54 PM

At least they are releasing it at the right time by giving it the full week. I look forward to hearing this, i must say they have surprised me so far with their solo offerings I like Niall and Louis's offerings so far.

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 4th April 2017, 11:18 AM

Harry will be on Radio 1's breakfast show on Friday morning from 8am biggrin.gif

EDIT: from when Harry recorded the interview with Nick Grimshaw that will be broadcast on Friday:

Harry will be on the Saturday Breakfast Show this Saturday 8-10am (UK time), on BBC Radio 2.

Posted by: Rafael x 4th April 2017, 04:57 PM

'Sign of The Times' will be played for the first time at 8AM GMT on BBC Radio 1.

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 4th April 2017, 05:04 PM

Apparently there's only one copy of the song in the world right now and it's on an iPod that people are given to hear it laugh.gif

It's on Capital's A list from Friday, although the lettering works differently so this is the third-from-top playlist, not the top playlist as originally expected. I assume they're a bit cautious because the description doesn't sound very Capital friendly :') and going by the above, it's possibly they've not even heard it yet!

laugh.gif I'm sure it's saved securely with the record label but that's not a bad point kink.gif nevertheless it's a pretty good tactic, ensures it doesn't get leaked at least!

QUOTE
STYLES THE STARMAN:We give the world’s FIRST review of Harry Styles’ debut solo single Sign of the Times — an epic, David Bowie-esque rock ballad
One Direction star wows with 'deeply personal' song
6th April 2017 | from Dan Wootton's Bizarre column

FIVE minutes and 40 seconds.

That’s how long it takes former ONE DIRECTION heart-throb HARRY STYLES to establish himself as the world’s most exciting new music star.

His debut single Sign of the Times is a soaring, epic rock ballad that sounds like a cross between DAVID BOWIE and LANA DEL REY (as weird as that sounds).

It goes against the current trend of non-distinguishable dance tracks — the length alone would make it commercial suicide for any other artist.

Its main instrument is the piano, which Harry has been studiously playing in private for years.

For large portions of the track he sings in falsetto, showing off a quality voice with much more range than we ever saw during his five years in 1D. This song has the potential to become a timeless classic.

Harry co-wrote it with the brilliant, highly regarded Grammy-winning producer JEFF BHASKER, best known for his work with KANYE WEST and JAY Z.

Whether anyone in the industry will take young Harry seriously as the “next Bowie” remains to be seen, but the 23-year-old is certainly putting his best foot forward.

The lyrics are “deeply personal”, sources close to Harry tell me, but they’re also open to any form of interpretation.

Sign of the Times begins with him singing over the piano: “Just stop your crying, it’s a sign of the times. Welcome to the final show, hope you’re wearing your best clothes.”

Could it be about a break-up? Possibly. Or maybe about death? More likely.

The refrain throughout the song is his need to “gotta get away from here”. From what exactly isn’t clear.

We could meet again somewhere, somewhere far away from here,” he sings, poignantly.

Many people think Harry has disappeared up his own backside with an arty promotional campaign designed to distance himself as far as possible from the 1D heritage that has given him this opportunity.

That said, I give him huge credit for releasing the most daring and well-delivered debut single of the decade.

And you won’t get it out of your head once you’ve heard it . . .

Starman rating: 5/5 stars

This is all sounding VERY exciting now ohmy.gif

Posted by: PAJ88 7th April 2017, 07:00 AM

Actually nit that bad.
Best of the solo 1D releases so far.

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 7th April 2017, 07:02 AM

PLAYING ON RADIO 1 RIGHT NOW !!!!!

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 7th April 2017, 07:10 AM

I think I'm a bit of a MESS right now, never been quite this exhilarated over a song premiere, but wow that was incredible mellow.gif wub.gif I had slight doubts in my mind and they were totally unnecessary in the end, his voice is incredible on any song and it's really well written too. Totally different to anything else in the charts but not alienating, to stop it being a hit.

Posted by: .MIKE. 7th April 2017, 07:14 AM

Yeah, this really is pretty fantastic. I can definitely understand the Bowie comparison/inspiration. With all the hype on his side, he's surely gonna be the biggest solo success of 1D

Posted by: liamk97 7th April 2017, 07:17 AM

I really like it! The rock power ballad vibe really works for him. I wasn't too sure on the slightly distorted vocals during the falsetto at first, it didn't seem to fit right and took away from the impact of just hearing his natural voice over a piano, but I grew to like it towards the end. Definitely going to be a bit hit, although I suspect radio will want a ~3:30 edit.

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 7th April 2017, 07:22 AM

Straight onto the Radio 1 a-list and is top of the New Music Friday playlist on Spotify! Also added to Hot Hits UK on Spotify too, ie. the playlist with the biggest chart impact cheer.gif

Posted by: Camer🐱n 7th April 2017, 07:50 AM

Em, it just kind of plod's along for the first minute and a half. They definitely could have cut 2 minutes off of it, even 3.

Posted by: Tinasha 7th April 2017, 07:54 AM

I like it, though it's long, there's some standout moments and I applaud him for having such an unexpected debut.

Posted by: gooddelta 7th April 2017, 08:10 AM

For me it's a bit like Stereophonics have covered a long lost Queen or Bowie track.

It's very instant and a brave debut though and I like it on first listen. I applaud him for not following the crowd too.

Posted by: Jonjo 7th April 2017, 08:44 AM

It's absolutely fantastic. So much better than I thought it would be. It's really well produced and has that classic and euphoric sound to it! Very impressed.

This is actually pretty fab. Was expecting something more upbeat though.

His voice reminds me of Kelly Jones.

More of an Aaron Taylor Johnson rather than a Sebastian Stan.

This is utterly spellbindingly brilliant.

I can see it absolutely smashing and being one of the defining songs of the 10's. It just has that 'modern classic' feel about it right off the bat.

Perfectly executed.

Posted by: Rooney 7th April 2017, 10:42 AM

I really like it too, certainly a very left-field sound.

He was always going to be the biggest out of all the 1D boys, he was the one the media loved the most. He's come up with a massive tune.

Posted by: irn_brube 7th April 2017, 11:11 AM

This is VERY Bowie. Oops at me loving it! Considering they were awful as a group, ZAYN and now Harry have really brought it with their solo material. I can see this being huge, like Davidson said it's got that feel about it.

Posted by: Irn Broot 7th April 2017, 11:18 AM

Yeh, this is actually fantastic and completely unexpected! I thought he was going to be the full on pop star out of the five! Its great to see him using his star name to push for a different sound and, however unlikely, I hope it inspires radio/labels to push more music like this.

Posted by: BruMoses 7th April 2017, 11:53 AM

It's amazing but needs a radio edit.

Posted by: ♀mdh♀ 7th April 2017, 12:27 PM

On first listen this is absolutely awful. Drags on for far too long and has absolutely nothing appealing about it. Fingers crossed it somehow grows.

Posted by: ♀mdh♀ 7th April 2017, 12:28 PM

Tbh Louis >>>> ZAYN >>> Niall >> Harry so far.

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 7th April 2017, 12:32 PM

Posted by: Regina 7th April 2017, 12:50 PM

Niall > Harry >>>>>>>>>>>> *Chasm* >>>> the others.

Posted by: AdamAloud 7th April 2017, 12:52 PM

It has that classic sound, yet it's totally modern. A very bold and brave debut!

Posted by: Lieowstic🐱 7th April 2017, 12:52 PM

Jesus christ that last minute or so is incred. It's a tad too long but for how much I was expecting to hate this I'm impressed that I really like this laugh.gif

Posted by: RobBob 7th April 2017, 12:59 PM

It's not something I can imagine myself going back to a lot but that's pretty much my only criticism of it. I thought this was going to have a "trying too hard to sound epic" feel to it but it really just is and he's done exactly what he set out to achieve. It does feel very classic already, his vocals sound the best they ever had and it feels natural to Harry aswell. Very impressed!

Posted by: Harry♀ 7th April 2017, 01:04 PM

I love really David Bowie this sounds ohmy.gif I did not expect myself as much as I did on first listen ohmy.gif

Posted by: Chez W♀mbat 7th April 2017, 01:41 PM

So this is...really good? I hear Oasis a bit more than I do David Bowie, but anything with those influences becoming a hit these days is something very special indeed. I'm just so relieved it's not some Ed Sheeran knock off or Tropical house shite.

I doubt this would do anything if it was some unknown artist, so I hope that his name being behind it pushes this sound into the mainstream a bit more and y'know, just encourage artists to take a few more risks with their sounds rather than following what's on trend.

Posted by: Jade 🐱 7th April 2017, 02:14 PM

Harry always had the best voice in 1D for me so I was always going to be most excited for his solo project out of all of them. But I wasn't quite expecting it to be this good ohmy.gif I definitely get the David Bowie comparisons which is certainly a brilliant thing. The duration is no issue for me as it builds marvellously, it's amazing when the chorus 'arrives' for the first time at around the 1:20 mark. Then the final minute or so is just the perfect finish - his voice sounds great and hits hard. I am so here for this being the next #1!

Posted by: ♀Cody Viall♀ 7th April 2017, 03:00 PM

During the first minute I was thinking "oh GOD I'm going to hate this" but I was pretty impressed with the chorus. It's definitely a bold choice for a lead single as this sounds like something MCR (RIP cry.gif) would have gone for in the late stages of their eras, just without any guitars. It has room to grow but at the same time has room to get really annoying really fast.

I'm just so split on this.

Posted by: Andrew♀ 7th April 2017, 03:06 PM

The first minute and a half kinda plods along but Jesus Christ that chorus *.* Contrary to most I've loved most of Zayn's material (minus the track names laugh.gif) but on this song I can see Harry's being even better wub.gif

Posted by: Andrew♀ 7th April 2017, 03:19 PM

iTunes #1 in every territory except for The Bahamas, Japan, Taiwan and the Cayman Islands *.*

Posted by: l♀tita 7th April 2017, 07:01 PM

Posted by: Dobbo 7th April 2017, 09:28 PM

I can see myself enjoying this in small, infrequent doses. A solid debut nevertheless!

Posted by: Jonjo 8th April 2017, 03:57 AM

This actually gives me major 'Purple Rain' vibes. So stunning!

One of my favourite songs of the year so far already! SO beautiful!

Posted by: Jonjo 8th April 2017, 11:40 AM

Picking something new that I adore with each and every listen.

So wonderfully euphoric!

Posted by: Ultra💚🚦🐱 8th April 2017, 01:24 PM

This is utterly stunning. <3

Was hyped from when I saw that Bowie/Lana comparison review and it really has exceeded all expectations, hope this can be massive!

Posted by: cqmerqn 8th April 2017, 11:44 PM

Good song. Too long though and without a radio edit, it could struggle in the long run.

In terms of debut singles only:

1. ZAYN - PILLOWTALK
2. Louis - Just Hold On
3. Harry - Sign of the Times
4. Niall - This Town

Can't see Niall or Louis being big. ZAYN will do the best.

Posted by: Irn Broot 9th April 2017, 04:01 PM

This just came on 4music, and it just showed that image of him sat down :')

For all you saying its too long though, you're wrong. They played a shorter edit, basically cutting out the middle bit and it really butchers it. It ruins the build up and makes that final minute less special.

Posted by: J♀sh 9th April 2017, 04:19 PM

I do quite like and think it's a great choice for a bolder lead single but selfishly, I'd rather have something a bit more uptempo and shorter from him. His voice sounds fantastic on it so I'm hyped for the album but I've only listened to it three times and I'm already a bit bored of it. It does seem to drag a little for me although at least it's more exciting than 'This Town' laugh.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 10th April 2017, 08:35 PM

#1 in the midweek update today, on around 30k, while #2 is on 15k! A couple of streaming days seem to be missing but that won't close the gap too much. Seems a lock-on for #1 on Friday cheer.gif

Posted by: PeteFromCats 10th April 2017, 09:07 PM

I never thought I'd be saying something GOOD about Harry Styles ohmy.gif In fact, all of the singles so far (bar Zayn) have been a little 'out-there' and less non-mainstream pop. As long as they don't get back together, I'll be fine

Posted by: ankietarrr 10th April 2017, 09:26 PM

Congratulations Joseph Styles

This is your time smile.gif

Song is very good although it is not David Bowie/Queen but rather Bruno Mars/ Robbie Williams combination (Angels + When I was your man)

Harry's currently set to sell just upwards of 60k this week, not bad for a song that isn't particularly commercial and is unlike anything else in the top 40 right now. Will be a fairly comfortable #1 biggrin.gif

Posted by: Colm 15th April 2017, 09:46 AM

Stereophonics doing an Embrace ballad but not nearly as bad as that sounds. This is great.

Posted by: Rob S ~ 15th April 2017, 04:48 PM

This sounds like a mix of Bowie, Oasis & John Lennon (Imagine in places) to me. All of which are a very good thing. I'm enjoying this a lot and he's also the one from 1D I definitely liked vocals of most so it's safe to say this has absolutely set him up for a big career. I sort of wondered if he'd go against the trend actually as his voice is too good to be shoved on some tropical sounding track tbh.

Very impressed all the same!

Posted by: Jonjo 21st April 2017, 11:15 PM

There's such a timeless feel to this song. It's just not getting old for me, despite me hearing it so much and so often on my own accord. This is going to be a firm fave of mine by the end of the year I think.

I feel like Liam's heading more in the direction that my tastes suit, but Harry has set the bar ridiculously high, that I'm not sure he's gonna be able to match it for me. We shall see though!

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 21st April 2017, 11:49 PM

Some epic shots and it feels quite Bowie with him floating through the air and running on the water. Not much going on, no, but fits the song beautifully. I like it a lot.

Posted by: pippa 8th May 2017, 03:45 PM

Harry's style of debut single in slight ways reminds me of the sound Mark Owen was aiming for with his first solo single Child. At the time, the style of "Child" was not what was expected by his fans or Take That fans at the time but was received well critically. That said, i am confident Harry will have a much bigger solo career than Mark.
