Why was ‘Fools Gold’ back in the chart again a year later?

I always wondered that too,
maybe cos they were so popular?

It was only 10 months after its release so it is possible there was leftovers. Been listening to the chart rundown this morning and Bruno really only mentions it’s huge popularity.

After listening to the chart there that top 10 gets a lot better as we move up the chart with classics from KLF, Deacon Blue and like the Betty Boo stuff. The Itsy Bitsy song seems a bit of euro pop novelty from summer holidays in Spain and although ‘Groove Is In The Heart’ is probably more deserving of a 1990 number one as it was exactly what was popular at the time I’m glad the classic ‘Joker’ song got to number one eventually!

The band were in dispute with the label Silvertone, "One Love" was the last original track the band did for the label so basically they had nothing new to follow it up with and nothing on the horizon either as the band started legal proceedings to get themselves released from their contract which won't be resolved until 1992.

22ND SEPTEMBER

After last week’s controversy saw Deee-lite’s record company go public about the debate over “rounded sales” it should be noted that record companies are only provided with the rounded up panel sales and not the broken down figures as this is, usually, unnecessary, but this week there is no doubt that Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker” is No 1 by a 26% margin- 64,000 to 51,000 though both show sales increases thanks to the publicity.

Indeed running in second place in initial sales flashes the new Iron Maiden single “Holy Smoke” becomes their 5th straight top 10 single and highest debuting of their long career, it also immediately equals their highest position they achieved with “Can I Play With Madness” two years ago. Bruce Dickinson has of course been releasing his solo work “Tattooed Millionaire” this year as the group was on hiatus last year, but he’s rejoined the band now as the group seem to have utilised the trick of motivating their fans to buy their singles in the first week, 47,000 of them in fact, we’ll see if they have anything left in the tank next week.

Just behind them is former Lone Justice singer Maria McKee, you may remember the name as the writer of Feargul Sharkey’s No 1 “A Good Heart”, she also appeared in the promo for Robbie Robertson’s top 20 single “Somewhere Down The Crazy River” by way of trivia. She now has a top 5 single in her own name with “Show Me Heaven” which is taken from the new Tom Cruise film “Days Of Thunder”, it shoots 26-4 (34,000) this week to provide the real challenge for Steve Miller Band. It’s produced by Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon fame and brother of Jane Asher. and was co-written by McKee herself.

Deacon Blue drop 4-5 (30,000) as their album debuts at No 3, just below are a falling KLF 5-6 (29,000) and Bombalurina 3-7 (28,000), and it’s all over for Adamski 7-8 (27,000) and Mariah Carey who reverses 9-10 (22,000).

Taking their name from Cantril Farm in Liverpool where they grew up The Farm are also new comers to the top 10 this week with “Groovy Train”. Up until now their greatest claim to fame was having a single “Hearts & Minds” be produced by Suggs and opening for the Housemartins in 1987, but their time has come after they signed with a major label this year producing the No 58 track “Stepping Stone” a cover of the Monkees track which was never a hit in this country until the Sex Pistols covered it in 1980. “Groovy Train” is once more produced by Suggs and comes with a promo featuring actor Bill Dean better known as Harry Cross in Brookside, it all helps the song move 11-9 (23,000).

1- THE JOKER- Steve Miller Band (64,000)
2- GROOVE IS IN THE HEART/ WHAT IS LOVE- Dee-Lite (51,000)
3- HOLY SMOKE- Iron Maiden (47,000)
4- SHOW ME HEAVEN- Maria McKee (34,000)
5- FOUR BACHARACH AND DAVID SONGS EP- Deacon Blue (30,000)
6- WHAT TIME IS LOVE- The KLF (29,000)
7- ITSY BITSY TEENY WEENY YELLOW POLKA DOT BIKINI- Bombalurina (28,000)
8- THE SPACE JUNGLE- Adamski (27,000)
9- GROOVY TRAIN- The Farm (23,000)
10- VISION OF LOVE- Mariah Carey (22,000)

29TH SEPTEMBER

Maria McKee’s “Show Me Heaven” becomes the 13th chart topper of the 90s this week as it demolished the opposition and moves 4-1 (62,000), it means that McKee becomes the first woman to write a chart topper for herself and another act (Feargul Sharkey) and also keeps the sequence that has seen a record containing the word “Heaven” topping the charts every other year following as it does Wham! (1986) and Belinda Carlisle (1988). It dispensed Steve Miller Band 1-2 (54,000) who can’t complain at getting daily promotion via the Levi advert.

Previously only really known in the country for their No 19 hit “9 AM (Comfort Zone)” back in 1988, Londonbeat are now back with their second album “In The Blood” due next month, and a new single “I’ve Been Thinking About You” which incidentally has a live version of “9 AM” on the flipside of the 7” and CD. It’s already a hit on the continent making No 1 in Holland a few weeks ago, and looks like it has its sights set on a similar peak here as it rushes 12-4 (34,000). The song was originally demoed back in 1988 but left off the debut album until it became more polished- seems to have worked.

Snap! are turning rapidly into a consistent hitmaking act as third release “Cult Of Snap!” powers 21-8 (23,000). It’s pretty much all that you would expect from a Snap! hit and helps the parent album “World Power” rise 44-40 though it has still failed to make the top 20 after 19 weeks of being available, it seems that they aren’t entirely convincing buyers to go the whole hog and fork out for an LP.

UK dance act Bass-O-Matic are the newest name on the scene with the track “Fascinating Rhythm” floating 14-9 (21,000) this week. It contains up and coming remixer William Orbit who also co-wrote Harry Enfield’s “Loadsamoney” a top 5 hit a couple of years ago.

Fallers this week include Deee-Lite 2-4 (34,000), Iron Maiden 3-5 (32,000), The KLF 6-7 (25,000) and Adamski 8-10 (20,000). The Farm can rejoice however with “Groovy Train” lifting 9-6 (29,000).

Next week sees a new Pet Shop Boys record, their first in over a year, seven of their last 8 singles debuted in the top 10 with three making No 1, how will “So Hard” fare?

1- SHOW ME HEAVEN- Maria McKee (62,000)
2- THE JOKER- Steve Miller Band (54,000)
3- GROOVE IS IN THE HEART/ WHAT IS LOVE- Dee-Lite (42,000)
4- I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT YOU- Londonbeat (34,000)
5- HOLY SMOKE- Iron Maiden (32,000)
6- GROOVY TRAIN- The Farm (29,000)
7- WHAT TIME IS LOVE- The KLF (25,000)
8- CULT OF SNAP!- Snap! (23,000)
9- FASCINATING RHYTHM- Bass-O-Matic (21,000)
10- THE SPACE JUNGLE- Adamski (20,000)

so Dee-Lite didn't hold up that well and dropped quite quick

surprised Show me Heaven did so well in the UK, while doing nothing in thew US, didn't even go top 100
when it sounds more like your usual US #1...
not the biggest fan of Show me Heaven, rather had Vision of Love at #1 instead

I wonder if older people used to moan about the chart in the same way our posters do now... OMG so sick of that 90s dance taking up over half of the top 10, they all just sound the same. It’s not like it used to be in the 81-86 period where we had so much variety and good tracks

Trust me, people have always moaned about the charts and current pop music not being as good as it was when they were 14 to 18 years old (or in some cases as good as the music their parents were listening to), I've spent most of my life arguing that they are wrong until streaming when I started to join in too and amended my argument to "modern music is fab it's just half of it is not in the charts".

I didn't know Peter Asher was involved in Show Me Heaven! ohmy.gif (pretty sure I'm the only one on Buzzjack who remembers Peter & Gordon on UK pop TV laugh.gif )

For me Show Me Heaven is one of the absolute best No.1s of the first half of the 90s, and an absolutely stunning vocal from Maria on that live performance.

The chord progression in the verses is indeed heaven, and the chorus is a monster.

was there a particular reason why it didn't chart in the US?

can't remember any dance version of this, probably for the best wink.gif

Yeh it was the Chimera version they played at a lot of nights out when I was younger. It only charted at number 70 in 1997, but was a happy hardcore hi-nrg style which wasn’t hugely popular in the uk.

I agree that Maria’s vocals are impressive in the TOTP performance but the song doesn’t do much for me really. I did enjoy the fact about a ‘Heaven’ chart topper every other year for the past few years in the commentary here though kink.gif

Not crazy about any of the songs that have debuted/advanced into the top 10 in those past couple of weeks. Deee-Lite and The KLF still grabbing all of my attention heart.gif

Have to agree with you Jade, those two are miles better than everything else for me as well.

Depeche Mode were my number one for me at the time with World In My Eyes, having just toppled Deee-Lite

6TH OCTOBER

Maria McKee continues to dominate the singles market with some ease as “Show Me Heaven” improves by 17% to 72,000 and 178,000 to date which isn’t enough for the top 10 YTD as that list reads:

1- NOTHING COMPARES 2 U- Sinead O’Connor 671,000
2- SACRIFICE/ HEALING HANDS- Elton John 649,000
3- KILLER- Adamski 537,000
4- DUB BE GOOD TO ME- Beats International Ft Lindy Layton 475,000
5- VOGUE- Madonna 435,000
6- WORLD IN MOTION- EnglandNewOrder 429,000
7- THE POWER- Snap! 421,000
8- NESSUN DORMA- Luciano Pavarotti 384,000
9- TURTLE POWER- Partners In Kryme 367,000
10- IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE- Roxette 353,000

That’s not to say that Maria Mckee is safe from challengers, Londonbeat rise 4-2 (54,000) with a strong 60% increase in sales which could cause problems for Mckee next week. Also on a wave is Bobby Vinton’s take on “Blue Velvet” which was originally a hit for Tony Bennet in 1951 Stateside before being covered by various acts including Vinton who himself scored a No 1 hit in the US back in 1963 though no versions of the track have ever charted here in the UK. However the track has now been used on the new Nivea advert and is also featured heavily in the trailer for the first UK terrestrial showing of the David Lynch 1986 film of the same name which is showing on Channel 4 next weekend. It got an unusual midweek release last week to debut at No 16 and now in its first full week of availability it rockets 16-3 (51,000) and could easily be next week’s chart topper.

But hold fire because here’s a high new entry from The Pet Shop Boys who are one of the most eagerly anticipated returns to the chart of the last quarter. Produced by Harold Faltermayer “So Hard” is the 11th top 10 single for the boys and the 8th to debut inside the top 10 as it arrives at No 4 (46,000), that equals the best ever start to any of their singles with “Always On My Mind” which of course went on to top the charts for 4 weeks! Look out Maria! The video incidentally features Tennant’s home town of Newcastle Upon Tyne and stars Paul Gascoigne’s sister Anna.

They’ve been scoring the hits for 22 years and now they have their 22nd Top 10 hit on their hands, yes Status Quo are back in the top 10 after an absence of 2 years with “The Anniversary Waltz- Part One” which previews a new Greatest Hits compilation in a fortnight. It’s a medley of some old rock N Roll greats including “I Hear You Knocking” and “Lucille” and as you can guess is designed to be part One of a pair of releases with Part Two scheduled for Christmas, and if you buy the single you’ll note the sleeve note that reads “It’s Live Sonny” to answer some critics who have noted the similarity of this kind of thing to Jive Bunny. The song flies 31-5 (33,000) this week to post a clear warning of its intentions.

A hit in Europe over the summer “I Can’t Stand It” finally becomes a Top 10 UK hit this week for Twenty-4-Seven Featuring Captain Hollywood. In its original form it featured MC Fixxit on vocals and reached No 17 in their native Netherlands, but the rap was redone by Captain Hollywood after Fixxit left the group and a new promo was made which converted the song into a hit on the continent, and now comes to the UK on the back of a Bruce Forest remix especially for us Brits. It climbs 11-7 (25,000) this week.

Elsewhere Steve Miller Band drop 2-6 (26,000) as former rivals Deee-Lite drop 3-8 (24,000) and The Farm drop 6-10 (22,00), whilst Bass-O-Matic hold at No 9 (22,000).

1- SHOW ME HEAVEN- Maria McKee (72,000)
2- I’VE BEEN THINKING OF YOU- Londonbeat (54,000)
3- BLUE VELVET- Bobby Vinton (51,000)
4- SO HARD- Pet Shop Boys (46,000)
5- THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ PART ONE- Status Quo (33,000)
6- THE JOKER- Steve Miller Band (26,000)
7- I CAN’T STAND IT- Twenty-4-Seven (25,000)
8- GROOVE IS IN THE HEART/ WHAT IS LOVE- Dee-Lite (24,000)
9- FASCINATING RHYTHM- Bass-O-Matic (22,000)
10- GROOVY TRAIN- The Farm (22,000)
