Not to be a negative Nancy but I have *never* understood the appeal of Get Into the Groove beyond being a period piece, even the title sounds uncomfortably retro. If I had voted in this it would not be as high as #12.
The Power of Goodbye on the flipside though, what a gorgeous track. I can only echo tbe surprise that one from Madame X made it into the top ten of all! Recency bias though and it is Madonna back at her most controversial and topical as she hasn't been for several cycles. |

Into The Groove is one of the only tracks on the Immaculate Collection that I prefer in that Q version, I think the edit works really well. Agreed, the little piano breakdown is a great addition. The song thrives in its simplicity for me, it's just non-stop fun and joy all the way through and represents the best of a recurring theme in Madonna's music. Not one I'd have assumed would be her biggest seller either - it was fortunate enough to have all the right ingredients working in its favour at the same time - but, as I say, I think it's a good representation of Madonna all the same. 'The Power of Goodbye' is sublime, one of the best productions and vocals in Madonna's catalogue. The story that's told over the course of 'Frozen', 'The Power of Goodbye' and 'To Have and Not to Hold' is one of my key moments on Ray of Light. A shame to see it miss out on the Top 10 but everything that left is just as amazing. |

Oh, do people prefer TIC version of 'Into the Groove'? I'm much more of a fan of the original

I knew the TIC version before I knew the original so that could be why I prefer it, the original feels a little under produced by comparison for me.

I would say the TIC version is overproduced, which is my gripe with it

I'm keeping my baby 10. Papa Don't Preach // True Blue // 9.750 The top 10 commences with the perfectly conceived 'Papa Don't Preach'. Based on gossip heard outside the recording studio, the song deals with teenage pregnancy and abortion. Madonna assumes the role of an expecting teen at battle with her conscience; she's adamant that she is keeping the baby but is keen not to unsettle the relationship with her father. She pleads to him that she is ready and in love with her partner but still values his support and advice. It's complex and deep, more challenging than her first two albums, and Madonna alters her sound accordingly in effort to evoke sympathy for the character. The song begins with a sharp string chord progression, impressively resembling a Vivaldian style, which succeeds in hooking the listener in anticipation for the subject matter, whilst Madonna explores her lower register to convey the serious nature. She channels the anxiety through a raw, powerful vocal, urgent and desperate, as she attempts to break the news to her father. There's many conflicting thoughts and feelings to be explored and Madonna recognises them all thoughtfully and truthfully. Yet, Madonna still manages to present the perfect pop package, a song easily accessible in a club environment with its dance beat and irresistible pop hooks. At its core, 'Papa Don't Preach' encourages female empowerment and self-expression: this was a girl who wanted to be free to make her own decisions instead of living under her father's principles whilst still maintaining a close bond, a theme that draws parallels with Madonna's own life and compelled her to bring the song to life. Like A Prayer: 1/11 I'm Breathless: 1/12 Ray of Light: 2/14 Music: 1/13 Confessions On A Dancefloor: 3/15 Madame X: 1/18 80s: 1/47 90s: 3/76 00s: 4/57 10s: 1/62 |

Papa Don't Preach is a very important song for me. About 5 years ago now, I listened to it on the way to work and it is the exact moment I decided to come out to my mum. I did it later that evening and I have this song as the motivator for that happening. It's a very worthy way of starting what promises to be an almighty top 10!

Oooooo was expecting a touch higher for that one but none the less top 10 is still very much deserved
It feels silly to state the obvious but what a classic single it is, those strings have to be one of the best use of strings in any song ever right? I didn't really understood what the lyrics were about when I was a child but they helped me have something to sing at my dad if he was trying to do something dastardly like ask me to tidy my toys away. For me it works on two levels, firstly the sheer catchiness of the production and hooks that made me love it as a child but secondly the deeper meaning behind the lyrical content that made me appreciate it even more later in life. |

I am shook at God Control making it into the top 9.
Hoping for a Frozen win but wouldn't be surprised to see Hung Up take it. |

Recency bias is in full force but even with that I think God Control is outdoing ALL expectations!
