The lead single from Madonna's 2nd studio album turns 35 years old. Written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg and produced by Nile Rodgers, the song is a bold statement about femininity, presented in a gleeful, joyous explosion of pop music. The song is ambiguous; it is about innocence, sexual purity, female identity and so much more. The catchy nature of the song and provocative nature of it allowed it to become Madonna's first #1 single in the US and other places. The music video, set in Venice, shows Madonna adorning a wedding dress and emphasises the female power that the song attempts to convey - she is sexually independent, she is strong and fierce, but also innocent and beautiful.

For many, this is the song that cemented Madonna's place as a pop icon. But 35 years later, does it stand the test of time?

What are your thoughts on the song today?

From the pumping instrumental introduction, to the opening lyrics, this is one of M's most iconic moments. It's so vibrant and fun and carefree and yet deep down it's got meaning, metaphors and drive. I listen to it whenever I hear it but I don't really go back to it in itself much - more just as part of the albums/collections it is part of. The music video is stunning though and pure vintage 80s Madonna (and female pop music as a whole). The way she stares at the camera throughout is so enticing and yet SHE controls the power. It's such a great video.

Yep, definitely one of her most iconic and signature songs. Instantly recognisable from its intro and opening lyrics. It's fun, it's playful, it's ironic, it's ambiguous - all elements we've come to associate with Madonna. I don't return to it much by choice and there's so many more Madonna moments I prefer, but it is a lot of fun when I hear it and I find it really comes alive on the stage, particularly with its many reinventions.

Two of my favourite usages of the song:

'Like a Virgin' is one of Madonna's most performed songs, including 7 appearances on her tour setlists. Here's some of the most iconic:

As ever with everything Stuart Price has a hand in producing, the Confessions Tour version is glorious. I love the Blond Ambition Tour performance too - that really pushes the themes of the song through!

The confessions version is perfection.

I also love the Billie Jean mash up on the virgin tour.

Same I like the Billie Jean mash-up, I'd have liked her to add the chorus as well.

It's strange how both Like a Virgin and Material Girl have similar melodies to two famous songs yet they both feel recognisable in their own right.
