I've seen such a mixed bag of reviews. It's 58% atm on Rotten Tomatoes (with 87 reviews), and the gneral consensus seems to be (honestly exactly what I had expected - if it wasn't "perfect")

Though it can take pride in its visual achievements, this reimagined The Lion King is a by-the-numbers retelling that lacks the energy and heart that made the original so beloved-though for some fans that may just be enough.
Tbf tho, I think all the live action Disney's have been given mostly average reviews and I think I've enjoyed them all? I'm still excited, but doing such a beloved animated movie was ALWAYS a massive risk.

Well, this is exactly what I was worried about really, but I thought the director of The Jungle Book would pull something out of the bag. There just isn't much else to do with a film like this other than make it look pretty in live action, what story is there left to tell? I'm questioning how much I need a live action remake that adds nothing new when I have the original available. I guess I shouldn't bother but goddammit my inner child would hate me forever.

Ugh I just heard Beyoncé speak as Nala. Such a miscast.
She's more of a Sarabi

I'm still expecting to like it. I just think it's made out to be a lot worse than it is, due to it being The Lion King. laugh.gif

Aladdin was so much fun and has worse reviews. I liked Dumbo too!

Well it's officially classed as "fresh" now as it's up 3% to 60%! laugh.gif

It's always a HUGE risk to re-tell and reimagine such a beloved classic. You can't perfect perfection, so the best thing to do is to try and stay as truthful and faithful to the original as you possibly can, whilst adding a little something of your own.

This was pretty much what I expected and I didn't dislike it. I thought it was cute and faithful enough. It was absolutely stunningly shot & the attention to detail is flawless. Seeing the realistic looking animals speak is tough to get your head around though lol.

Billy Eichner & Seth Rogen were definitely the huge highlights, as expected. I loved the new interpretations and little quirks to the songs except for Be Prepared... they honestly should've never bothered or they should have kept it as a powerful, monologue. Genuinely abysmal.

But overall, it could've been so much worse and I don't know what much more could've been done to improve it though. It's just that the original is such a favourite and a Disney staple, that I think criticisms are gonna be magnified 10x more.

I really liked it.
My Letterboxd review of it.
