This seems to be going under the radar a bit but I think it looks really quite good. I love the cast and it seems like it could get a few awards nominations yet, already been nominated for two Golden Globes!

Oooh I will check this out purely for Taraji heart.gif

This is actually #1 in the dailies at the US Box Office at the moment ohmy.gif I was expecting it to be surprisingly popular actually because it has had great reviews but wasn't expecting it be ahead of the likes of Rogue One or Sing at any point! Hoping Octavia is a lock-on for another nomination now too wub.gif Very hyped to see this, probably in my top three most hyped awards season movies with Manchester by the Sea and Fences biggrin.gif

Saw this last night and I loved it...all 3 of them were amazing.

That moment when Taraji explains herself for walking half a mile to use a colored women bathroom was Oscar worthy wub.gif

Fantastic movie. Some things made me feel very uncomfortable, yes. But that's 60s America for you. I never even knew of some of the things that were shown. It's crazy how things changed. The whole trio was fabulous. Taraji definitely deserved an Oscar nod for that stunning performance. And I am quite surprised that Janelle is such a good actress. If she was in other movies then they definitely flew under my radar!

Janelle is in 'Moonlight' too, if you've not seen that! I think you'd like it.

Hoping to catch this soon. Getting some big momentum right now!

Octavia's Oscar nomination is really quite baffling to me, not because she was bad but what did she do? This is Taraji's movie and even Janelle had a more worthy moment imo.

A great movie anyway, some good humour thrown in and always nice to see someone put Sheldon in his place.

Her nomination is irritating. They obviously wanted to nominate someone but Best Actress was too crowded for Taraji and Octavia (a previous winner) is the next logical choice. Her performance is not deserving at all.

All in all as much as I enjoyed every second of this it had a bit of a throwaway feel good TV movie feel to it, it doesn't feel like something award winning. Octavia's nomination is....odd. They could have easily put Taraji in the same category instead.

I'm seeing this on Friday and I'm really excited!

Just seen this today wow loved it, brilliant film, brilliant cast and what an amazing story.

All three of the female leads are brilliant, the film was so good, moving, heartwarming and funny it had everything.

Totally beats La La Land for me and I loved that

As some of the reviews have said, it's a bit more on the nowe and less subtle than the rest of the Oscar nominees and objectively is probably not one of the better made film but I think like everyone else, it was a massively surprisingly crowdpleaser that you can't help but love. I adored the mixture of humour and serious moments (and pure sassy moments too, the line Octavia Spencer says to Kirsten Dunst in the bathroom was amazing) and all three girls had excellent chemistry. Taraji does definitely deserve a nomination too (I'd put her in over Meryl this year, come on! sad.gif), her big moment of telling the boss why she was missing everyday was excellently played. I'm really pleased for Octavia Spencer too, she did play the character well and she's just really sweet so I'm pleased for her laugh.gif (even if the other nominees probaboy had a bit more to do). I did prefer her character to Janelle Monae's too, although I probably laughed at the latter the most, she seemed a little over the top at times. Overall, I left feeling inspired that I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it and it executed that message perfectly wub.gif

Pretty much in agreement with this. It took a while to get into the film and I found myself floundering in and out of it a few times (looking at my phone etc...). But when I did eventually get really into it (pretty much from the moment Katherine explained why she had gone to the toilet for so long, more or less) I got quite invested in the movie.

I think a "Best Picture" nomination is maybe pushing it a bit too much personally, but I definitely think Taraji should've been nominated for her performance instead and maybe Janelle too. It was great that this story has been shared and told in such a huge way though. I had NO idea about any of this because Nasa and space have never been anything I've looked into. Space things kinda bore me on the whole laugh.gif

Overall, it was a nice story that needed to be told and the performances, for the most part were fantastic and award worthy. The film as a whole though? I'd have to personally reconsider (at least with 'Moonlight' and 'Arrival' I kinda see WHY they're nominated).

6.5/10

Moving my comment here from the general film comment thread:

Hidden Figures, great Civil Rights/ NASA 60's drama. Superb cast, sedate-paced, utterly charming and inspirational. It has hero astronauts and black women civil rights at it's heart, 2 issues I felt very strongly about at the tail-end of the 60's as a pre-teen, so I was bound to love it.

There was no excuse for racism then and there is no excuse now, though the USA "government" is doing it's best to turn the clock back right now.

7/10, perhaps a little too leisurely-paced for an 8, but great performances all-round.

I watched this last week. I loved it. What these women had to out up with as part of their day to day lives. It was inspiring . A film I'd like to show to any 12 year old girl.
