Colour The World was like a poor attempt to recreate Dario G's Sunchyme.
Expected DJ Sakin to do a little better, but maybe it's quite forgotten. Witch Doctor still never feels like as big a hit as it actually was! The days when the UK actually used to buy music like that...! Not a bad result for Boyzone and Kele Le Roc, thought Blur would do a lot better! Pleasingly high for Ace of Base, that song is so joyous (the first single I ever bought <3), it should be regarded as one of their classics but I expect most of the general public have forgotten it exists, if they even heard it in the first place. Oh no I forgot to vote again! Would've given big points to 'Flat Beat', 'Fly Away' and 'Tender' out of those that've already left us.

8. Vengaboys - We Like To Party
Average Score: 7.74 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 11 (Dobbo) Lowest Rating: 2 (darkstar79) 9. The Corrs - What Can I Do? Average Score: 7.68 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 11 (SamJudd & T Boy) Lowest Rating: -1 (darkstar79) 10. Honeyz - End Of The Line Average Score: 7.63 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 11 (ThePensmith & vibe) Lowest Rating: -1 (Jason) Kicking off the top 10 is R&B group Honeyz with their second single 'End Of The Line'. It peaked at #5 in a run of five straight top 10 hits for the group. In ninth are Irish band The Corrs with 'What Can I Do?' a track that surprisingly missed the top 40 altogether upon original release however following a remix re-entered some 5 months later to an eventual #3 peak. Just in front are Dutch group & eternal party-bringers The Vengaboys with the aptly titled 'We Like To Party'. The track, also known as 'The Vengabus' became the band's second UK top 5 hit following 'Up & Down' and set the tone for what would be an incredibly successful year with 2 UK #1s thereafter. This particular track was the group's best performer in the US and I thank you all for rating it into the top 10 |

5. Dusty Springfield - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me
Average Score: 8.11 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 10 (dandy*, darkstar79, Jimmy Jam, Qween, SamJudd & ThePensmith) Lowest Rating: 0 (bluesunstorm) 6. The Cardigans - Erase/Rewind Average Score: 7.97 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 11 (Chapman) Lowest Rating: 0 (Jason) 7. Robbie Williams - Strong Average Score: 7.79 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 10 (gavindeejay, SamJudd & ThePensmith) Lowest Rating: 2 (Jason) Robbie Williams who, despite featuring on the most Now albums of any artist (including those with Take That), has yet to register a Now Rate victory and can't manage it here either as 'Strong' bows out in 7th. Taken from his hugely successful 'I've Been Expecting You' album the track peaked at #4 in March 1999 in a run of an incredible 21 consecutive top 10 singles. The Cardigans, winners of 2 Now Rates, have to settle for 6th this time row with 'Erase/Rewind'. The song was taken as the 2nd single from album 'Gran Turismo' and managed to outpeak the lead track 'My Favourite Game' by breaking into the UK top 10 at #7. However it can't replicate MFG's Now Rate winner's medal which of course stands for so much more. Finishing in fifth as a tribute track it's Dusty Springfield. 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' was a UK #1 single in 1966, her only ever domestic chart-topper and following her passing in March 1999 was added to the Now 42 tracklist. The top 5 all managed an average score of above 8. |

3. Spice Girls - Goodbye
Average Score: 8.42 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 11 (Fgiboy2511) Lowest Rating: 3 (dandy*) 4. Fatboy Slim - Praise You Average Score: 8.16 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 10 (Chapman, darkstar79, Dobbo, gavindeejay, Jason, Jester & ThePensmith) Lowest Rating: -1 (vibe) Two previous winners take up positions third & fourth. Fatboy Slim, winner of the Now 43 Rate with 'Right Here, Right Now' falls a few places short with that's track predecessor. 'Praise You' remains however his only UK #1 single to date and features one of my all time favourite videos (I'm sure you all know it but if not definitely give it a watch!) Spice Girls have won 2 Now Rates in total & now can add another top 3 finish to their mantlepiece. 'Goodbye', titled in reference to Geri Halliwell who had left the group prior, became their 8th UK #1 single out of 9 at the end of 1998, whilst also becoming their third straight Christmas #1, a feat only ever previously accomplished by The Beatles. So we are left with Believe Vs. You Don't Know Me. Will it be a surprise win or go with the general consensus? |

Why the f*** are the Corrs as low as 9? At the very least it's top 3 material.

1. Cher - Believe
Average Score: 9.26 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 11 (bluesunstorm, gooddelta & Jimmy Jam) Lowest Rating: 4 (darkstar79) 2. Armand Van Helden feat. Duane Harden - You Don't Know Me Average Score: 8.66 Total Votes: 19 Highest Rating: 11 (mr_pmt) Lowest Rating: 3.5 (Jimmy Jam) To the surprise of absolutely no-one, Cher prevails in the Now 42 Rate Finishing a very distant second but still with a superb average is Armand Van Helden. Sampling both Carrie Lucas' 'Dance With You' & Jaydee's 'Plastic Dreams', 'You Don't Know Me' entered straight at #1 in early 1999 and provided the American DJ with his first UK chart-topper. It wouldn't be until 10 years later when he added to that tally featuring on Dizzee Rascal's 'Bonkers'. A grand slam win for Cher with the global smash 'Believe' becomes her first Now Rate victory. 'Believe', widely regarded as one of the greatest comeback singles ever spent a total of 7 weeks at #1 in the UK and became her first chart-topper in 7 years. The song also earned her a Guinness World Record as the oldest female soloist to top the Billboard 100 chart. A track considered somewhat ahead of its time, it drew criticism from the clear auto-tune usage throughout but nonetheless became a club staple and is in fact one of the best selling songs of all time worldwide. In this rate, it picked up only two scores below an 8 along with three 11's & nine 10's from nineteen voters so there really was only ever 1 winner here. Well done Cher! Thanks to the 18 other participants in this rate, look out for the next one going up in due course. |
