18th November 2018

It's a second week on top for The Cars re-invention of Drive and a total of 6 weeks over 3 seperate years at number one, the orchestral lushness being a bit of theme this week, as The Beatles enter at 2 with the lushly orchestrated Good Night. 50 years ago, the sprawling, patchy The Beatles (White Album) came out, and now it's back in the charts even more sprawling, but the gems remain gems. All of the tracks I rate have previously charted - bar one: The Ringo sung Good Night. After, let me frank, 56 years of living with Beatles music it's a bit an ask to find something new and fresh to me, but that's how this one feels to me. I'd mildly liked it over recent years but not really noticed it much tacked away on the end of the album, it's hard to get to that stage and still be feeling unfrazzled. The George Martin production, though, is just gorgeous for this old-fashioned lullaby, and now I play it out the album it stands out on it's own.

Ice Cube is angry at Trump, and so am I, fabulous at 3, Friendly Fires go top 10, as does Ariana Grande with her second or third top 10, and Clean Bandit's umpteenth top 20. Back in pre-Christmas 1988 Freiheit topped my charts with the lush, orchestral melodic Paul McCartney-ey Keeping The Dream Alive, and now Bucks Fizz are back again with a Xmas album cover of it disguised as The Fizz. What's more they also enter the top 40 with their official Xmas single, for my first 2 new Chrimbo tracks of 2018, a full 46 years on since my first one ever: John & Yoko's Happy Xmas War Is Over. I love a Beatles link.

Camelphat are back again, so is Kendrick Lamar guesting, best current rapper for me, and a couple of oldies manage to breakout of the oldies pack hanging around outside my top 75 waiting for a gap from other oldies exiting the chart: All Saints 2000 chart-topper Pure Shores, and one that has never charted: Ooh La La, The Faces 1973 album track that Rod Stewart didn't sing on (it was a Ronnie Lane song) but which he covered decades later for a minor hit (and a top 10 hit for me), and which is now (like so many old greats) featuring in pre-xmas adverts and selling on itunes. The Faces are nestling appropriately next to Rod Stewart's new track, and it's actually their first chart appearance, barring re-issues, since early 1975, almost 44 years ago. Gulp! I was 17.....aaaghhh!
