Both those 2 instrumentals were charity records with lovely stories behind them. I guess the only way for instrumentals to chart nowadays is with a charity campaign behind them.

Didn't go top 40 and only charted on the singles chart by something of a technicality (as its sales were mostly physical sales for an EP that was just too short to qualify for the albums chart) but with charting instrumentals of any description being so rare of late Aphex Twin's 'Blackbox Life Recorder 21f' (#79 last year) seems worth a mention.
