Phew, at least I managed to get a Pointless with one of these. I must admit I didn't think overly carefully about my strategy so clashing with 1 other person is just sod's luck, as well as picking dear old Socrates (should have gone for anyone else).

Heh heh, just beginning to wonder what the average age is here. Maybe I should have invited some of the old fogeys from the retro board in.

7. Any member of the Cobra Kais in The first Karate Kid film (1984)
POINTLESS - Jimmy (Jimmy Jam) POINTLESS - Bobby Brown (Iz) 1 - Sensei John Kreese (Regina,princess_lotti) 2 - Johnny Lawrence (Ultraviolence1989,Josh,Mack) 2 - Tommy (Chez Wombat,Jonjo,Joe) 3 - Dutch (HarryEzra,SamJudd,Alex!,J?hq) Let's not talk about the Jayden Smith remake, The Karate Kid remains popular with people of all ages mainly due to the chemistry between weedy Daniel Larusso and his neighbour and eventual karate teacher Mr Miyagi. Daniel's enemies throughout the film are the spoiled kids of the Cobra Kai karate club and between us, we've managed to get all the named members including the sensei. Only Jimmy (who barely says a word in the movie) and second in command Bobby Brown score no points here with bleach-blonde steroid nut Dutch (played by Steve McQueen's son Chad) scoring the most with you for some reason. |

8. A reference made to 1980s culture by Marty McFly in Back to the Future which a 1950s character doesn't get.
POINTLESS - Marty "invents" the skateboard (princess_lotti) 1 - Marty refers to current sci-fi movies to scare George e.g. "My Name is Darth Vader, I'm an Extra Terrestrial from the Planet Vulcan" (Joe,J?hq) 1 - Lorraine thinks his name is Calvin Klein because its all over his underwear (Jimmy Jam,Alex!) 1 - Marty plays heavy metal guitar at the dance (HarryEzra,Jonjo) 2 - Marty tries to buy a Tab and Pepsi Free in the Diner (Ultraviolence1989,Iz,Mack) 3 - Ronald Reagan is the President (Regina,SamJudd,Chez Wombat,Josh) Not sure why this was such a "tough" question as everybody gave great answers and there was a lot of agreement. There are actually loads and loads of things to choose from - I'd also have accepted 1950s yokels thinking his radiation suit makes him a man from outer space, the belief his body warmer is a life preserver, the idea of "re-runs" on TV and the fact nobody believes his family has two television sets, the use of the word "heavy" to mean worrying, a road named after John F Kennedy who hasn't yet been president or, indeed, shot. Bet there are loads more too. |

It took me a good half hour to find that answer, unless you've seen the movie enough to remember it, it was tough.

9. Any film written by John Hughes.
POINTLESS - Weird Science (HarryEzra) POINTLESS - National Lampoon's Vacation (Regina) POINTLESS - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Chez Wombat) POINTLESS - Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Jimmy Jam) POINTLESS - The Great Outdoors (Ultraviolence1989) POINTLESS - Ferris Bueller's Day Off (J?hq) 1 - Sixteen Candles (Alex!,Joe) 1 - Pretty in Pink (Iz,princess_lotti) 1 - Mr.Mon (SamJudd,Jonjo) 14 - Curly Sue (Josh) 14 - Flubber (Mack) Loads of pointless answers here - and it just goes to show how many films John Hughes wrote throughout the 1980s. Unfortunately, while he did write both Curly Sue and Flubber, they were both released in the 1990s and so are wrong. |

10. Any film featuring at least two members of the Brat Pack in its cast list.**
POINTLESS - The Outsiders (Mack) - Emilio and Rob POINTLESS - Sixteen Candles (J?hq) - Molly and Anthony 1 - St Elmo's Fire (Jimmy Jam,Joe) - Emilio, Rob, Andrew, Demi, Judd and Ally 1 - Wisdom (HarryEzra,princess_lotti) - Emilio and Demi 1 - Oxford Blues (SamJudd,Jonjo) - Rob and Ally 2 - The Breakfast Club (Chez Wombat,Ultraviolence1989,Iz) - Emilio, Ally, Anthony, Molly and Judd 2 - Class (Regina,Alex!,Josh) - Rob and Andrew Everybody got a low score here, but only two were pointless. The more obscure films on the list tended to get more votes due, no doubt, to the reverse reverse psychology of Pointless. Relatively easy to Google, but difficult to guess which will be lowest - am I right? |
