BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Survey - Preferred music format by age

Posted by: vidcapper 1st March 2017, 09:33 AM

I thought it might be interesting to find out, by age range, which way Chart Chat members preferred to obtain/listen to their music.

I've made it multiple choice in case of equal preference, but please don't answer in more than one age range.

To me, streaming feels somewhat... trivial - little better than listening to a song on the radio.

18-30 - streaming + physical

Posted by: JosephStyles 1st March 2017, 10:15 AM

19 years old
I picked both physical and download. I always buy albums physically, and even a few CD singles when they exist! But I'm quite happy downloading singles.

Common sense is like my grandfather and I am 38 😂

Picked streaming + downloads

Posted by: ML Hammer95 1st March 2017, 10:27 AM

21

Mainly mp3 downloads for iPod (never pay), Spotify premium for house parties/finding music and the occasional CD if I can't find the same quality online.

Posted by: Mikee1981 1st March 2017, 10:28 AM

31-40 I went for physicals and downloads, I generally always buy an album in physical format very rarely download an album but as its only option really for singles I'll download tracks

Streaming mostly for singles.
Always a physical for albums!

Put streaming though

Posted by: timjimlee 1st March 2017, 10:54 AM

Over 40 and still purchase physical albums but I am one of those (some might say sad) cases that whilst I still need the physical album I purchase via Amazon and listen to the auto-rip download.
Sometimes I don't even un-wrap the CD these days but need the physical copy as I have collected all the other Albums for that Artist over the years.

Pay for Spotify for my 2 Daughters though.

yes like listening to a radio BUT you can choose what they play biggrin.gif

Physical for albums I want on vinyl or that have great artwork.
Everything else downloads (although I rarely pay).

Streaming, and I'm 20. I don't mind paying £4.99 a month for it when I use it so often, the amount of new music I listen to is more than worth it, it seems to be getting harder to find songs to download on filesharing sites and even just on Youtube, so it's ease of access too. It's rare a song isn't on streaming that I want, it tends to be J-Pop which I'll just download on iTunes to add to my library. There's a few older songs and just random releases that artists leave out of their UK releases for some reason (or most of a career in Ricki-Lee's case sleep.gif) but I just add my local files to the library and it's fine.

All three

Posted by: Chez Wombat 1st March 2017, 01:06 PM

18-30 and still downloads, even though I do use streaming a bit more than I used to, particularly for albums, I very, very rarely buy a physical album now as I've never been a huge album collector, so if there's one I really want so for convenience, I can often just go and listen for free on Spotify!

Posted by: Qween 1st March 2017, 01:15 PM

26 and I almost only use downloads. I do still buy physical albums, but mostly when I see them on sale. Never really got into streaming very much because I listen to music on my iPod mostly and it's a 12 year old iPod Classic so I need the actual audio file to listen to it on the go.

29, and I don't have a preference. I use all three for differing reasons!

Albums - 99% of the time I purchase them physically (on CD). Occasionally I'll buy an album on Vinyl as well, if I truly adore said album, or if I'm a big fan of the artist (an artist whose releases I collect). If I'm slightly tentative about whether I really want to invest in a particular album (for instance, an artist's debut album), I'll stream it first before deciding whether to purchase it or not. I don't download albums! A physical makes me feel like I really own the album.

Songs (singles) - I use iTunes to download songs I love (I buy anything that makes my personal chart Top 10 heehee.gif ). I use Spotify to stream songs I like, but not enough to download. I also use it to listen to new songs.

21 here. As somebody who listens to music whilst out walking with no internet connection almost every day, I will never understand the appeal of streaming. Don't buy music often enough to justify the Spotify membership either, I prefer to spend less and know my money is going directly to the artists I like! Also even if it's a bit abstract in the modern age when it's just a downloaded or ripped file, I like the idea of owning the music I listen to, so it can't be taken away just because I unsubscribe from a service. Voted for downloads and physicals (downloads for singles, physicals for albums unless the download is significantly cheaper) smile.gif

Posted by: Catherine91 1st March 2017, 02:56 PM

I'm 25 and I use all 3, but I voted for downloads as my favourite.

I use streaming almost every day but I use the free version as I prefer to download things (legally!) so I can have a permanent copy of them on my laptop and iPod. If I particularly like an artist I'll happily spend £10 on a CD album, but for artists I'm not as big a fan of I might download their albums when the price comes down to £4.99 or whatever.

18-30

I voted for streaming. I buy albums on iTunes for some of my favorites, but otherwise I'm pretty much done with buying music.

Posted by: T Boy 1st March 2017, 05:57 PM

18-30 and units physicals and downloads for me.

Posted by: mdh 1st March 2017, 06:02 PM

18. I put all three, for casual listening I use Spotify but when I really enjoy a song I'll download it - so far I've downloaded..

Jon Bellion - All Time Low
easyFun - Monopoly
Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios
Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You
Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm
Dave - Samantha
Stormzy - Big For Your Boots
Flo Rida - Cake
Martin Garrix - Scared To Be Lonely
Maroon 5 - Cold
Just Us - Cloudbusting

...just because I really enjoy all those songs and have wanted them to do well on iTunes etc.

However, I'm a fan of physicals too, I'm planning on buying the Ed Sheeran album on physical over the weekend, and I've bought the Take That track on CD single too - I guess when there's something really good on CD, I will buy it, but only if I feel I really need it. I like the novelty of having a CD though, the recent success of Giants has shown us that they're not dead and gone just yet and I like that element of the music industry being around still.

Posted by: mr_pmt 1st March 2017, 07:57 PM

I wouldn't say streaming is my favourite, but it's a convenience thing to have everything at the click of a button.

I still buy physical albums to support artists I'm a fan of (keep up a collection) or if I *really* want the album, but it's not frequent.

I'll only download from iTunes if I need a file copy of the song and can't "obtain" a decent version of it via other means. laugh.gif (or like at Christmas when I used a £10 gift card)

tl;dr physical probably favourite, 18-30.

Under 18 (just)
Physicals & Streaming. Downloads aren't very useful anymore when I can get the song for free and I don't have any physical proof I have the music

Posted by: SKOB 1st March 2017, 08:17 PM

Where are all the people aged 31-40 ohmy.gif

Posted by: Shaky Fan 1st March 2017, 08:54 PM

Over 40 - physical and downloads. Used to buy albums mainly on CD but have switched to vinyl over the last couple of years (if it's an artist I really like I'll buy the CD as well). And where there are bundle deals such as the pre-orders for the new albums from Blondie and Erasure I'll even get the casette.

Posted by: Steve201 1st March 2017, 10:00 PM

31-40 stream from Apple Music and buy vinyl for my record player - mainly albums I consider classics!

Posted by: slowdown73 1st March 2017, 11:01 PM

CDs are my preference. I used to love maxi CD singles but now they are so rare and we are lucky to get a 2 track CD single.

Posted by: Robbie 2nd March 2017, 01:43 AM

Over 40 and these days I mainly stream music. I rarely download any more - I think I've bought about 10 downloads in the past 12 months and have all but given up buying CDs. I bought the last Now CD but that was simply to play at the family Christmas get together as my mother doesn't have computer access. Other than buying the Now CD I don't think I've bought another CD since 2015.

Posted by: vidcapper 8th March 2017, 11:40 AM

BTW, how many of you still stream music, even after you've bought/downloaded it?

Posted by: Davidson 8th March 2017, 11:42 AM

I hate streaming. I would rather own my own music.

I'm 21 btw. The only time I ever use Spotify is if I can't find a song elsewhere online or I haven't found a download.
