BuzzJack Music Forum _ Lady Gaga _ How would you have managed the ARTPOP era?

Posted by: HauntedHaus 13th November 2019, 08:27 PM

Amidst the furore of Gaga seemingly disregarding this era of music, and with us all being in agreement that it was a complete mess in terms of the release strategy and marketing, the question is in retrospect: how would you have managed the ARTPOP era?

Here's how Gaga's team did it:

Single 1: Applause
Single 2: Do What U Want
Single 3: G.U.Y.
Promo single 1: Venus
Promo single 2: Dope

What do you think the lead single should have been? And second, third, fourth etc?

Posted by: HauntedHaus 13th November 2019, 08:31 PM

Single 1: Gypsy no contest
Single 2: Do What U Want in retrospect, featuring Christina (as much as I despise her voice lmao)
Single 3: Applause as much as I don't enjoy it compared to her other singles, it's radio friendly
Single 4: Sexxx Dreams an edit for radio, idk, just COME ON it's a single and a half - a risk so end the album with it and if it does nothing oh well~

Promo single 1: G.U.Y. flop or not, what a song.
Promo single 2: Dope shows a vulnerable moment on an otherwise harsh sounding album - sells the album well

I still remember the mess of Gaga starting two polls on Twitter asking fans to help her choose the second single. The first poll "Manicure" vs "Sexxx Dreams", the second had "Aura" vs "Swine" >>>> "Venus" announced as the second single >>>> "Do What U Want" proved popular as a promo single and so released instead of them all.

>>>> The organisation!

LMAO what an era!!

I don't think anything could've given her more hits though, Applause is the catchiest song on the album and it was first single, then there was the promo single mess and DWUW as a proper second single which was all right, it's a great track. I would've then released Gypsy as third and the amazing G.U.Y. as fourth with the video which is one of my faves from her.

I think the biggest misstep was the DWUW video saga tbh, not so much the singles.

Aura to have been a single to coincide with Machete Kills

then DWUW around the beginning of the year so that the Christina version release would actually make sense. promo on The voice was pretty much guaranteed with that.

i’m Still torn between G.U.Y and Gypsy bc the latter sounds like an era closer but we got such a good video for the former

Have them both biggrin.gif

How anyone can not consider Gypsy as a single is BEYOND ME. Listen to it guys - it's a global ANTHEM about finding your space in the world. So important.

GUY is terrible. Sorry but it is. It is NOT an album opener. It is NOT A SINGLE!!

1. Gypsy
2. Brooklyn Nights
3. DWUW with Christina and Voice promo in new year
4. Party Nauseous/ ARTPOP
5. Applause

Promo singles:

1. Dope
2. Princess High

I think that would have been the perfect run. Splitting rhe album into two and putting great songs on the other one was just a mess.

Oh yes forgot about Partynauseous, that should've been on the album in the first place. Not sure about a single.

This is fairly similar to what I would have gone with.

Gypsy — October 2013
Applause and ARTPOP as promo singles (they speak for the theme of the album much more than Gypsy)
Do What U Want (feat. Christina Aguilera) — February 2014
Sexxx Dreams — May 2014

August to November was too long and didn't help with the overexposure narrative. I also think debuting songs during the iTunes Festival two months before the album was a mistake — people love the mystique of Gaga and she revealed too much too early. She could have performed them live for the first time during her VEVO event.

I understand that Dope offered something different, but we all know she would have performed Gypsy acoustic everywhere — enough to court those types of listeners. Dope is just such an odd inclusion on the album. I'll never understand why they held Brooklyn Nights back — perhaps for that doomed ARTPOP sequel?

I think I agree with this! 'Gypsy' has always screamed killer post-album single to me, much like what 'The Edge of Glory' was for Born This Way, but it's easily the best from ARTPOP and it's interesting to change my perception by positioning it as a lead single.

'Do What U Want' is a great song in itself and it's a shame it's been abolished from Gaga's discography because of R Kelly. In hindsight, I'd have had a solo version appear on the album then promote the Christina version as a single. I liked the way R Kelly sounded on the song but I guess it was quite strange to have a man on a song like this, not to mention this particular man.

'Sexxx Dreams' reflects the crazier side to the album but not too much to alienate casual fans.

Keep Applause as lead single and release ARTPOP as a promo single #1, MANiCURE as promo single #2

Push Gypsy as the second official single in quarter four leading up to album release. Helps push album sales more. And it’s a better time to push it too as it isn’t so much a summer smash. I think it would’ve perhaps been like a Edge of Glory like smash if it wasn’t the lead single it’s more like a follow up imo.

Push Sexxx Dreams as a single. With a cheeky video what’s not too controversial. Push this at BRITS (imagining this is 3 month on from Gypsy which was pushed in November). Reduce to 59p on iTunes too to get a good peak.

In an ideal world also give full video treatment and a single push to DWUW feat Xtina too to close the era but pretend that the album version is just a solo version... (basically like LM Power.

I’d also push back all the UK promo till after the album release..

So we get G Norton in like week 2 of ARTPOP being released, then X Factor In week 4/5 and keep Alan Carr as it was.

I think if the X factor slot and G Norton come after the release of ARTPOP it’s drop would’ve been less harsh and more like 1-5-11 than 1-9-24.

Oh gosh in terms of promo, DELETE the X Factor performance!

I’m imagining this is still a 2013 release pre streaming era. I think ARTPOP would’ve fared better chart run wise if the promo come after release of the album. But then again it could’ve also missed #1 as I imagine the promo she did picked up pre orders. laugh.gif

Also imagine the promo I mentioned have her performing Gypsy rather than Venus / DWUW.

Posted by: davidas 19th November 2019, 12:33 PM

I would have launched with G.U.Y - so much stronger than Applause and the video was incredible.

Single 2 - Venus - I think this would have been such a crowd pleaser and potentially a huge hit
Single 3 - DWUW (with Christina) - would have been a commercial success with an official video behind it
Single 4 - Sexxx Dreams (Collab with Rihanna?)

Promo 1 - Aura
Promo 2 - Gypsy

I personally would have kept Applause as an album track sad.gif

Soo Davidas would have killed her career. Mkay.

Released 'Sexxx Dreams' as the lead (maybe revamp the verses a bit though), released 'Do What U Want' second just before the album with someone other than R. Kelly and then released 'Gypsy' in early 2014 to keep the album sales ticking over. Maybe ended the era there. Or released 'I Wanna Be With You' in the spring as 4th single with a high profile performance somewhere to showcase her powerhouse vocals.

I guarantee the era would have gone a lot better with my plan!
