Chico fends off competition for number one single slot
Source: MW

Early retail reports reveal a three-way battle for the number spot is under way this week, with current chart topper Chico facing competition from Orson’s No Tomorrow (Mercury) and Pussycat Dolls’ Beep (A&M), currently at positions two and three respectively.

A brace of singles are set to make big rises after chart rules allowed digital sales to make an impact on the chart one week before physical release, the biggest of which being The Black Eyed Peas’ Pump It (Interscope). A Top 20 new entry last week based on download sales, the single is likely to rise into the top five thanks to its physical release yesterday.

Also set to score big increases are Girls Aloud’s Whole Lotta History (Polydor; last week’s position 93), Joey Negro’s Make A Move On Me (Data; 50), Ray J’s One Wish (Sanctuary, 172), James Blunt’s Wisemen (Atlantic; 57) and Beverley Knight’s Piece Of My Heart (Parlophone; 98).

After Michael Jackson’s reissued Beat It (Epic), the highest bona fide new entry comes from Ne-Yo’s So Sick (Mercury), followed by Massive Attack’s Live With Me (Virgin) and Battle’s Tendency (Transgressive).

In the albums market, David Gilmour is battling it out with Corinne Bailey Rae for the number one spot, with Placebo’s Meds (Virgin) looking to make it an all-EMI top three. New entries around the Top Ten will come from Russell Watson (Decca), Vittorio Grigolo (Polydor), Graham Coxon (Parlophone) and Fightstar (Island), with chart veterans Donald Fagen (Reprise) and Gary Numan (Cooking Vinyl) set to enter within the top 30.

nothin new in the top 3..... slaes are gonna be rubish then? maybe only 19K for a number 1

Posted by: Jester 14th March 2006, 11:23 AM

Well! Kelly C out of the Top 40 then! ohmy.gif

Looks like Ne Yo will be number 1 next week, if he is entering high on downloads. Sales must be awful too, but GO ORSON!! Would be wicked if they can make number 1! smile.gif

Posted by: Mikey 14th March 2006, 11:25 AM

Ne*Yo is download only, its not physically released until next week

Kelly Clarkson
Hilary Duff
KT Tunstall
Foo Fighters
Pearl Jam

Posted by: Graham 14th March 2006, 11:44 AM

Maybe the new entries mentioned are just top 20?

I'm positive KT,Kelly, Hilary and the Foos wont miss the top 40...

And also as most of the 'climbers' were not Top 75 last week will they all be classed as new entries?

Posted by: walrus 14th March 2006, 11:50 AM

Hi Mikey!

Must say, I so appreciate your effort delivering us midweeks, though must say this week looks pretty boring to me. Do you have further information yet about Madonna yet?

this is so very confusing actually, usually they will be classed as a new entry, just have to wait and see, how the final chart looks like next Sunday

I must say, its making the charts more interesting, with the new rules and low sales!

Posted by: Mikey 14th March 2006, 12:49 PM

Another new rule, in the top 20s, they have last week's position of 80 for Girls Aloud, and etc.

So technically anything in the top 200 is classified as a climber, not as a new entry, for next sunday's chart

Posted by: walrus 14th March 2006, 12:55 PM

Any news on Madonna, Mikey? Thanks! smile.gif

A bit shocked at Joey Negro being so low. sad.gif

not orson please
not chico

but pussycat dolls smile.gif

Posted by: ghostwriter 14th March 2006, 01:17 PM

Hope Orson will be number one on Sunday... although as Mikey says it could all change tomorrow.

Let's try not to get another number one for the Trannycat Dogs though...

Posted by: cp21 14th March 2006, 01:35 PM

go the pussycat dolls, go go go for a third consecutive #1.... wink.gif

Posted by: e-motion 14th March 2006, 01:35 PM

I predict BEP gonna be #1 on Sunday, but it could go anyway.

Posted by: Mikey 14th March 2006, 02:04 PM

After seeing Chico's Physicals sales only I'm assuming he will go back to the top of the chart, later on in the week, but its going to be pretty close within the Top 4

but sad.gif for Kelly Clarkson & KT Tunstall... Girls Aloud should be way higher!!!

Posted by: Tim 14th March 2006, 03:08 PM

These new rules make the midweeks so much more complicated. So the highest new entry is outside the top ten, but that song has not actually been released yet.
And some charts count Girls Aloud so that will be the highest new entry.

This may take a while to get used to.

The new rules are just totally random imo. Why just the week before? Makes no sense to me, if they are gonna allow it one week before they might as well allow download only all the time.

Posted by: Mark 14th March 2006, 08:36 PM

Thanks as always Mikey

Very surprised that Kelly is only Top 30, I think she will definately be Top 20 by the weekend.

Any tracks with numbers in brackets means they were released on downloads only last week, literally climbed up the chart this week.

I hope that makes some sense, as I'm still getting to grips with the new system.
