BuzzJack Music Forum _ Dance _ The Funky House And Disco House Thread

Posted by: TheSnake 5th June 2016, 11:49 PM

I just started this thread as these genres are my favourite in dance music because they really sound similar to the warm sounds of late 1970s disco which I like and also the fact I started to listen to dance music in late 2004 and there was a big trend for this music at the time kick started by tracks like Lolas Theme by the Shapeshifters. This is just a thread to put anything funky house or disco house related in.

It is completely fine to start threads for genres, I've seen plenty in the past. Just ignore the people pissing about, in fact I'm going to clean up the thread right now.

I was only messin' with you TheSnake! Lotti PMed you GIRLI so I was curious to know your response to Tara.

Don't leave because of this! In hindsight I probably shouldn't have done that as I don't know you too well. I do apologise, this definitely won't be happening again.

Idk if it's spammers as such, just some people that like to show they've got inside jokes and can collectively post it as a clique, or even just copying the above posters reply seems to be a common theme amongst some too, don't take it personally or let it drive you away from a forum you enjoy posting in smile.gif

Well it wasnt that funny. This was only meant to be a small thread in the Dance forum. You didnt all have to spam on here.

I thought if there are threads for Robbie Williams or The Saturdays, then why not one for funky house

Perhaps I will stay here and hold my own against those who dont like me on here.

I Feel Love was the first use of disco together with electronic music though.

Anyway I dislike the term funky house I prefer nu disco. For those wondering what it is it is a genre which utilises usually piano, strings and big disco vocals or disco influences. If you want an example from this decade it would be Bakermat - Teach Me.

I know why you were spamming or trolling, because I was number 10 on tge posters tgread, but I had a bad time with double posting accidentally sad.gif

Okay well that's where our sense of humour differs. I admit I was in the wrong though as you're new and you wouldn't have known my sense of humour yet! In hindsight I do regret these actions.

And you being #10 in The Posters' chart is a good thing! I wasn't involved in the last argument in that thread and encourage you to post whatever you want!

Again apologies.

Thats great I have never heard this one before.

Jade and everyone else who was spamming, I know that you didnt do it deliberately to get me off the forum. Don't worry i won't be jaded by that. laugh.gif I have decided to stay here.

The Bakermat is a subgenre of funky house, known as gospel house. Similar to this one . Top 20 in early 2006 smile.gif And Princess Lotti, i suppose the bright colours in the video are similar to that GIRLI video but nothing else laugh.gif

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I don't usually like the organ house variant of funky house (it was overused last year) but I will post this amazing track that was one of the biggest dance tracks of 2003.

Also from 2003, but much more disco influenced

Yes the mid 2000s were great for dance I thought, a lot of people didn't like that period because they liked trance. But trance was already dead and we had the likes of Special D and the later Flip and Fill stuff which i never liked before the funky house period of 2004 to 2006.

I know people don't like the 80s remixes at the time, but one stood out for me

But the best was the proper funky house, like this

And for something a bit more underground/ chilled sounding, this

And these...

Posted by: Ethan 6th June 2016, 05:34 PM

bakermat's 'teach me' is a good example as a recent funky/club house track dance.gif, however i can confirm that it could never in a million years be classified as nu-disco ~ not without offending a LOT of people!

Yes thats fantastic, Bob Sinclar was one of those who invented the filtered strings effect. Songs like this used them, this has got to be the pinnacle of the mid 00s chart boom in funky house musically. But why such a bad video, i think these bad videos are the cause of many peoples dislike of funky house sad.gif

And on the subject of Bob Sinclar, is funky house really French house? The characteristics on wikipedia of French house are very similar to that of funky.

Actually for this decade this is a great example of funky house. Pity it didn't do well in the charts

Neither are funky house.

'Brave New World' is trance and 'Rapture' is house/dance-pop. happy.gif

iio - rapture ~ progressive house/trance
jurgen vries - brave new world ~ trance
nero - must be the feeling ~ dubstep/grime

Kenny Dope & The Bucketheads - The Bomb [UK #5]

Unfortunately Crazy Chick probably is funky house but not good funky house imo sad.gif

I don't like all funky house. I never liked Junior Senior (although the drop is good in Move Your Feet but the song is annoying). I never really liked Just Wont Do by Tim Deluxe and Sam Obernik, again I find it a bit annoying I don't know why. I prefer the later stuff in the chart after Lola's Theme, which revolutionised the genre.

If you are looking for a trance song with disco influences this cover by Kelly Llorenna is great, I remember hearing it when ice skating when I was younger smile.gif

Posted by: danG 6th June 2016, 08:03 PM

Crazy Chick is in no way funky house laugh.gif are you sure that's the song you're thinking of??

That 'Tell It To My Heart' cover is good dance.gif

Eh, I find "Must Be The Feeling" to be more complextro than funky house.

My definition of funky house is a house song that blends elements of funk, kinda like this:

Or this:

From 2005, another version of the 90s dance tune covered by DJ SKT in 2015, this is much less flat and boring than the DJ SKT one imo.

And also from 2005 this spawned a 2015 top 5 hit of course

So first 'Work From Home' is tropical house and now 'Crazy Chick' is funky house?! laugh.gif

Err... OK then!

Posted by: TheSnake 7th June 2016, 11:30 PM

Well because it was released in 2005 the producers of Crazy Chick obviously just decided to use the prevailing sound of the time which was the sort of funky house used by the Shapeshifters. In the same way the Work From Home producers have used this decades chilled house sound (deep and tropical house) to form the backdrop of the song. But you are right they are not the house songs, just pop inspired by the sounds in dance at the time.

One pop star who did use true funky house was George Michael in the 90s (Too Funky, Fast Love).

The new Louisa Johnson collab is probably the only example of a pop star making a funky house song this decade (and thats because of Clean Bandit).

Indeed the bit with the backing singing in it is great in the Drake song.

Posted by: TheSnake 9th June 2016, 08:54 AM

In early 2001 there was also a great wave of funky house in the charts, until trance took over. Here are some examples from the time

Sorry for posting again on the thread but I found this new funky house track by the way which is rather good:

An example of a new funky house track which I rather like. It probably won't do anything in the charts though sadly

Posted by: TheSnake 10th July 2016, 10:29 AM

Heard this on a car advert, never heard this before now it's a good example of funky house

Posted by: mdna. 10th July 2016, 10:36 AM

sounds like the kind of song that could be a hit but I assume it'll get hugely overshadowed by House Work which appears to be getting the push as a main single from Jax Jones. shame really because to me this sounds considerably more accessible.

House Work is not my kind of thing.

Some new funky house...again it probably won't do much in the charts.

Posted by: TheSnake 1st August 2016, 09:59 AM

This is quite good, it is a mix of funky house and the kind of early electro that was popular in early 2006
