My comments:
'The Scientist' failed to reach the 2002 End of Year Chart, meaning sales less than 48k that year. Incredible to think it is now on 600k - that's at least 552k sold after its original chart run - with a highest position of #54 in that time. 'Take Me Out' sold 64k in 2004, so 336k sold since. Huge trickle sales again, reflecting the song's status much more than its original sales did. 'Bulletproof' sold 430k in 2009; 170k sold since. 'Play That Funky Music' was originally a #7 hit in 1976 and, from what I can tell, sold an estimated 230k, so that puts its overall total on 430k. I assume ABBA's The Name of the Game compilation was a budget release as it doesn't seem like it has ever officially charted, despite sales of 300k. -x- 'Clocks' sold 49k in 2003; 351k sold since. 'Don't Let Me Get Me' sold 120k in 2002; 80k sold since. 'Blurry' sold 80k in 2002; 120k sold since. I couldn't recall how 'I Wanna Feel' went without re-listening. Definitely seems like a non-number one, although it has still managed a comparably decent 140k since selling 260k in 2014. 'Just Say Yes' sold under the required 83k to reach the 2009 Year End Chart, meaning at least 117k sold since. This is what I believe the breakdown for Robbie Williams' Greatest Hits is: 2004: 1,531k 2005: 288k 2006: 215k 2007: 28k 2008: 10k 2009: 117k 2010: 79k 2011: 5k 2012: 15k 2013: 20k 2014: 5k 2015: 2k 2016: 80k The bold sales signify the years that the album made the Year End Chart so we know they are pretty much correct. By the end of 2009, it had sold 2,189k, leaving 38k for both 2007 and 2008 put together. The album charted in 2007 but did not in 2008, hence why 2007 gets a bigger chunk of the sales. In October 2010, a new compilation album (In and Out of Consciousness) was released and Greatest Hits disappeared from the chart. Obviously, a new and more definitive collection would naturally make older ones less appealing, but I'm pretty sure the record company also stopped producing stock for Greatest Hits as well. We know that the album sold 47k between 2011-15 yet the album sold only 499 copies between 05/05/16 (when Music Week supplied a total for Greatest Hits as well as all other Robbie albums) and 03/11/16 (the week before Greatest Hits was re-issued). Therefore, I feel the album will have been selling this little for at least the past couple of years, however in 2012 and 2013, Robbie released new albums which inevitably attracts buyers to other material. 2013 gets the biggest share because it has the boost from having a new album bookmarking each end. 20k may seem high but this 47k in 5 years had to come from somewhere and I feel iTunes will possibly have promoted the album when Robbie had another album out. |

The BPI still uses the 100:1 ratio for song certifications, right?

Liamk97 - Yes, ABBA's The Name of The Game', is a Budget CD. It was on 292,100 UK Sales by July 2016. Since then it has sold the 7,900 needed, for it to go Platinum. It was in the Budget Chart Top 10 for 37 Weeks & in the entire Budget Chart for 219 Weeks. It Peaked at No.2 in both 2004 & 2008. UK Budget CD's used to have to sell 600,000 to go Platinum, but now it is 300,000. ABBA sell a lot of Budget CD's in the UK. 'The Music Still Goes On' sold 231,000. It was released in March 1996, but the UK Budget Chart did not start until January 1997, so it lost 9 Months of UK Sales. It was a Budget Chart No.1 Hit. Correct! How can you be so sure? Do BPI not get their sales data from the OCC, who now use the 150:1 ratio? Ed Sheeran [Castle on the Hill] was at 193,744 on Thursday midnight but easily passed the 200,000 mark on Friday morning when BPI compiled their new list of certifications. |

BPI certifications are in line with the OCC's chart dates, so sales for 'Castle on the Hill' will have included sales from Friday 0.00am to Thursday 23.59pm. For instance, Michael Buble's Nobody But You debuted with 55k and wasn't certified Silver, even though it would have passed the 60k mark on the Friday. |

I don't understand why OCC use 2 sets of ratios. What do you mean by "total sales"?
Could you please explain this further. |

However, the 100:1 ratio is still used for the lifetime sales of the track. I have no idea why they use different sets, it's a silly idea I think but that's just the way they do it. Castle on the Hill is over 200k with its "total sales" simply because of the 100:1 ratio being used, as opposed to the 150:1 ratio for the weekly chart. |

'Please Don't Turn Me On' sold 130k in 2000 and I guess about 15k in 2001, so about 55k since. From what I can find, 'Can't Help Falling in Love' sold 660k in the 60s, which would put its total on 860k to date. It is Elvis' second single certification that takes into account only post-initial chart run sales - the first being 'Suspicious Minds' which was certified Silver in December 2013. 'Kickstarts' sold 368k in 2010 and a further 95k in 2011; 137k sold since. 'Born to Die' sold 245k in 2012; 155k sold since. 'I'm Like a Bird' sold 275k in 2001; 125k sold since. 'Take a Bow' sold 327k in 2008; 273k sold since. It's her 19th Platinum single! 'How We Do' sold 60k in 2005; 140k sold since. The BPI site claims The Essential Paul Simon was released in 2012 (and there was an edition released then) but I'm unsure whether it is meant to include sales for the version released in 2008. That album did reach #12 and only being certified Silver now would suggest those sales are not included, however the album only spent 4 weeks in the chart and, looking at the tracking lists, the 2008 and 2012 albums are the same. |

And the same this week for 'Shape Of You' being certified Gold for 400,000 sales which is based on the 100:1 ratio (chart sales are 366,403, presumably sales for certification purposes, using the 100:1 ratio are 448,084)I wonder if the BPI will start to certify records based on the 150:1 ratio from April, the traditional date for the start of the new business year? Otherwise the certification status of a single is going to be even more meaningless in the long run as the gap between chart sales of a track and its "market sales" for certification purposes may become huge. |

The Essential Paul Simon changed record labels in 2012 (he moved all this solo catalogue from Warner to Sony) so presumably that's why they haven't been combined.

Why can't the OCC see that running two concurrent systems for calculating sales is simply absurd? |

Hey Liam,
Any idea what Ed Sheeran's "Give Me Love" (2011), London Grammar's "Hey Now" (2013) and Kanye's "Power" (2010) have sold since their original runs? |

Hey Liam, Any idea what Ed Sheeran's "Give Me Love" (2011), London Grammar's "Hey Now" (2013) and Kanye's "Power" (2010) have sold since their original runs? 'Give Me Love' sold 112k in 2012 but I imagine it could have sold ~10k in 2011, despite not charting. That would mean 278k since. 'Hey Now' sold ~10k in 2013 despite not charting and 75-80k in 2014, so ~110k since. Can't really help in regards to 'Power', but I know it had sold 140k as of August 2013 and was certified Silver in January 2015. |

Phoebe Ryan - All I Know - Silver - Released: 2016 The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build a Home - Silver - Released: 2007 Albums George Michael - Twenty Five - 3x Platinum - Released: 2006 JME - Integrity> - Silver - Released: 2015 Mastodon - Blood Mountain - Silver - Released: 2006 Rush - 2112 - Gold - Released: 1976 The Weeknd - Trilogy - Gold - Released: 2012 T-Rex - Get It On: The Collection - Silver - Released: 2011 Videos The Corrs - Unplugged - Platinum - Released: 1999 -x- 'Left Hand Free' sold ~43k in 2014. It had passed 100k at the beginning of August 2015, so ~5.5k a month in the 18 months that have passed. Therefore, I'd say it sold ~85k in 2015 and ~66k in 2016, but those are very rough estimates. 'I'm an Albatraoz' sold ~115k by the end of its chart run in July 2015 (this includes ~38k that it sold before it charted at #25), so I'd say ~139k by the end of 2015 and ~56k in 2016. 'I Could Be the One' sold 459k in 2013; 141k sold since. 'Sugar We're Going Down' sold 83k in 2006; 317k sold since. Not sure what 'I Want You Back' sold in 1970 but it was the 35th best seller of that year. I assume it has sold over 600k in total, at least, not including the 1988 remix which is credited to Michael Jackson & Jackson 5. 'Love Lockdown' sold 310k by the end of 2009 (215k in 2008 and 95k in 2009); 90k sold since. 'Golden Touch' failed to make the Top 200 Best Sellers of 2004, meaning under 29k sales, so over 171k sold since. 'Can't Stop' failed to make the Top 200 Best Sellers of 2003, meaning under 37k sales, so over 363k sold since. It was certified Silver at the end of May 2015 which would work out at ~10k a month. However, 'Can't Stop' was confirmed to be on 340k at the start of October 2016, which would suggest, in recent months, sales have been closer to ~15k a month. Going by the ~10k per month though, that would be a huge 120k sold in 2016. 'In Too Deep' sold 59k in 2001 and charted into 2002, but not enough to make the best sellers of 2002 which meant under 48k sales. Let's pretend it sold ~100k by the end of 2002, which would mean 300k sold since. It was on sales of 160k as of August 2011, so 240k sold since then. 'To Build a Home' was substantially used in Thursday's episode of Eastenders which no doubt pushed the song over the Silver threshold! It's never troubled the Top 100 but I noticed it had 75m streams on Spotify. Twenty Five sold 617k in 2006, 106k in 2007, 45k in 2008 and 78k in 2009. It's sold 14k so far in 2017, which leaves 41k for 2010-16. That would suggest ~5.9k per year, although this average will increase for 2010 when it charted for a few weeks in the January, for 2014 where it re-entered the time that Symphonica was released and for 2016, where it sold 5,739 in the final week of the year (and obviously, the averages for 2011-13 and 2015 will then be lower). |

Adele keeping her record of having every proper single release being certified - Pleased to see WUTB making silver despite being a relative flop!
And at Alt-J getting a silver certification for their #85 smash! |
