Hey again Kerthhh <3

'I Been Young' and 'Rust Genome' JUST missed out in my countdown (cry.gif the latter chart run for me was brutal for a #2 oops) so I'm happy they're popping up elsewhere <3 I discovered the former pre-BJSC thanks to 6Music but was happy it was sent and did so well, serving the 90s realness *.* always obsessed with Iglooghost's unhinged energy. Nice to see castle rave favourite 'Alchemy' also popping up here, thanks again for introducing Geo22 to me!

(omg that my ETOTW support of 'Seven Swords' helped you decide to send it to BJSC btw, a v good decision there heart.gif)

Currently only familiar with 'Escapism'! tearsmile.gif

It's a BOP though!

laugh.gif Thank you, I think you might like 'Seven Swords'! Everything else I'm not sure will be to your taste x

Hey Kath - great to see Sofia Kourtesis already make an appearance. Madres is such a great album, so uplifting and warm! I couldn't easily pick a fave of the singles but “Si Te Portas Bonito” (complete with my dodgy pronunciation) ended up the highest on my EOY.

“Midsommar” was also an early favourite from early in the year - MRD applied his sound well to the Euro-Trance revival of 2k23.

Nabihah Iqbal and George Clanton are my favourites from those revealed so far, both having very strong years, and the singles from Iglooghost and Jayda G also went Top 10 for me too last year. Look forward to delving into some of the tracks that I missed.

Hey Doctor B! I loved your pronunciations laugh.gif You got me rethinking how to say yune pinku and "Fai Fighter" as well. "Madres" and "Si Te Portas Benito" are still to come. I was super happy to see they placed highly for you too wub.gif

QUOTE(Roba. @ Jan 8 2024, 05:37 PM) *
Oh yes Nabihah slaying a lot in EOYs it would seem. I haven't given the album a listen in full yet and kinda drifted off listening to some of her songs, was probably tired or something so not taking it in properly perhaps lol but should change that this year. 'Seven Swords' and 'I Been Young' are both great BJSC tracks too. Pretty sure the latter was in my commiserations but was still had a cool retro 90s vibe going on with the accompanying video!

Ty Roba! It's a really good and varied album. I'm sure you'd like it. 'Sunflower' was my fave, but that's probably down to me being more biased to electronic tracks haha.

QUOTE(PeteFromLeeds @ Jan 9 2024, 09:50 PM) *
I Been Young was another fab BJSC track! One that really grew on me as the contest went on, the style of music was great even with the more sombre lyrics about growing up.

Argeed! Listening to it the other day and it still sounds fantastic. The nostalgia is real and it takes me back to the music my late dad would play when I was growing up heart.gif

Hi Sergej! Thanks so much. I had a really intense work week and didn't get around to posting anything. Trying to catch up now!

Hey Jerrrd heart.gif Ooh, 6Music is a bit of goldmine when it comes to quality music up our streets isn't it! Love that, Iglooghost definitely brings the "unhinged energy" wub.gif Glad you're liking Geo22! Their newbie 'Noster' is flying high on my chart at the moment.

81-85

81. The Blessed Madonna - Serotonin Moonbeams (45-37-32-11-24-14-4-5-16-25-29-32-xx) [12 wks]
82. Villager - Never Gonna Be (20-3-9-33-29-44-35-11-37-47-xx) [10 wks]
83. yunè pinku - Sports (34-9-11-11-23-10-8-21-18-17-44-xx) [11 wks]
84. Dusky - Wildfire (38-10-34-47-39-28-21-17-7-11-...) [10 wks]
85. Ross from Friends - The One (33-20-23-26-15-23-26-26-16-39-xx) [10 wks]

Following his fantastic 2nd album Tread in 2021, Ross from Friends had been relatively quiet on the music scene, only casually dropping a banger called "The One" last year. It won the Electronic Track of the Week poll in the dance forum upon release. Conversely, Dusky have been on a roll with new music, releasing 2 EPs last year + 2 standalone singles, this track "Wildfire" features on their latest EP Life Signs, Vol. 3. I love the building energy of the instrumental and space disco elements paired with some euphoric French vocals on this one.

yunè pinku dropped my favourite EP of 2023 in BABYLON IX. "Sports" was the 3rd single from it and while it is not in the same god-tier as preceding singles "Fai Fighter" and "Night Light", it's still a great track in its own right. With a cyberlike quality to the production that feels fitting to pinku addressing someone glued to the TV. American producer Villager's 2-step stomper "Never Gonna Be" was a masterclass in how to turn an overused, cheesy stock vocal sample into something exhilarating and credible. Co-produced with Karma Kid and described as a love letter to 90s rave, The Blessed Madonna's "Seretonin Moonbeams" was a super infectious and joyous comeback from Dua's bestie. The single also spent 9 weeks on the Buzzjack Multichart, peaking at a respectable number 25.

76-80

76. Dua Lipa - Houdini (1-1-1-1-1-...) [5 wks]
77. DJ_Dave - React (42-28-27-27-49-44-31-14-5-18-44-39-49-xx) [13 wks]
78. PinkPantheress - Mosquito (15-1-2-8-9-16-19-35-46-xx) [9 wks]
79. Bonobo & Jacques Greene - Fold (13-1-4-4-19-31-33-46-46-xx) [9 wks]
80. DJ_Dave - Array (18-19-36-42-31-16-13-24-37-xx) [9 wks]

Live coded producer DJ_Dave, described as being "at the forefront of the Bloghaus movement", dropped an EP called Intercell last year that was preceded by the singles "Array" and "React" which both feature in this section. The latter got a boost to #5 after being sent to BJSC by the fabulous Neliönoir. The amount of anticipation I had to hear a collab between two of the electronic music scene's most emotive producers Bonobo and Jacques Greene was huge, and "Fold" lived up to expectations tugging my heartstrings all the way to number 1.

The Bath-raised PinkPantheress scored a 2nd k👠th chart topper with the lush and breezy "Mosquito". I had no choice but to stan this one, expertly produced with an almost bossa nova vibe to it and the Breakfast At Tiffany's-style music video - she just gets it. And we have poor Flopdini limping in at 76 after only 5 weeks at number one. That's underwhelming and beyond bad. (It has since gone on to spend 10 weeks at number one)

'Wildfire' is awesome, it starts off high in energy and builds some more - a switch-up from 'Another Place' which is the only one I'd previous heard from them, as great as that is too. I wasn't aware of space disco but it certainly fits! 'Serotonin Moonbeams' made my 100 too and I can hear the 90s rave connection in the carefree nature of the chorus and bridge. Poor 'Houdini' missing out on the top 75 and Alan Jones commentary in the Sales thread :'( Dua's on a roll of course

71-75

71. DJ Seinfeld feat. Teira - The Right Place (Live Mix) (3-2-1-9-12-23-38-42-xx) [8 wks]
72. Eliza Rose & The Martinez Brothers - Pleasure Peak (14-2-3-8-10-18-14-26-41-xx) [9 wks]
73. Dusky feat. Lucy Tun - Another Place (26-8-6-10-21-12-12-15-xx) [8 wks]
74. Slayyyter - Miss Belladonna (13-10-19-36-49-33-40-20-22-xx) [9 wks]
75. Four Tet - Three Drums (30-42-29-30-18-12-20-30-16-25-50-xx) [11 wks]

Four Tet dropped a sprawling 8 minute ambient epic called "Three Drums" which saw him depart the clubby Fred again.. collabs for a serene, Boards of Canada vibe and an acoustic drum loop. Slayyyter's STARf***ER era came into full swing with the 80s style synthtastic "Miss Belladonna" which told a dramatic tale of toxic love.

Dusky's "Another Place" was a decade-old track that got a single push last year. The lovely Lucy Tun assists with the timeless garage magic on this one. The BRIT-nominated Eliza Rose self-released the fun and filthy Ibiza house banger "Pleasure Peak" complete with an Ibiza music video inspired by the OG 00s British queen Victoria Becks. This should have been the follow-up to "B.O.T.A." and gotten a major label release. It's so infectious! Also in this section is my tragic BJSC DNQ by DJ Seinfeld. I thought this was a stunning live reinvention and a great showcase of how an electronic producer can evoke nostalgia and contemplation in a live setting.

66-70

66. Pretty Girl - A New Light (37-12-8-1-1-2-6-12-24-xx) [9 wks]
67. The Chemical Brothers - No Reason (42-9-6-10-8-13-21-37-33-25-28-47-xx) [12 wks]
68. Delia - Tekknotrans (16-2-2-2-7-28-27-34-34-45-xx) [10 wks]
69. Mr. Sosa - Tamagotchi Fantasy (39-30-47-33-30-36-36-8-5-5-26-...) [11 wks]
70. Caroline Polachek - Smoke (16-10-13-6-8-32-28-22-xx) [8 wks]

Taken from Caroline Polachek's AOTY, the Danny L Harle-produced "Smoke" got a brief single push with a cute tour video and a 6 Music playlist add. I love how her light shoegazy vocals contrast the intense bass and breaks on this one. UK producer Mr. Sosa has been on my radar for a couple years now. His music rarely misses and each release feels like an intriguing swerve. "Tamagotchi Fantasy" found him in Eurodance nostalgia mode paired with a super cute horse music video. This track grew on me immensely and took around 2 months before peaking at number 5 for 2 consecutive weeks.

Chilean LGBT producer Delia's "Tekknotrans" finished 9th in BJSC for me later in the year. It has a bewitching and riveting energy with numerous production switch-ups and a siren resembling that of a construction truck driving in reverse. The music video is also brilliant considering the limited budget. The first of 2 Chemical Brothers singles in the countdown, "No Reason" kicked off their 10th album era in style. A right stomper and the performance at Coachella was such a moment cheeseblock.png Pretty Girl who is no stranger to my charts or EOYs released her 2nd EP last year on Mall Grab's label and it spawned her 3rd k👠th chart topper "A New Light". I really loved the building dreamy soundscape of this one. Pretty Girl has one more track still to come.

Not me mentioning 'Another Place' and it appearing in the next section laugh.gif I didn't realise it was a decade old - I had a limit of 3 years on my chart so that crept through kink.gif - but makes sense that they've evolved their sound a bit since. 'Tamagotchi Fantasy' was a fab Eurodance discovery in ETOTW, and 'No Reason' is probably my favourite from The Chemical Brothers' album, those percussive hooks showed they were as inventive as ever!

Cheers Kath, tho I wouldn't necessarily take mine as correct, haha ! Although when I saw Asha live she definitely said it they way I said it for Fai Fighter (just as incredible live) <3 “Sports” was a great single too, great to hear that both of the other main singles are still to come.

Some excellent entries in the last groups, especially DJ_Dave ( heart.gif ), Ross from Friends and Four Tet who all made my T100 too. Also “Tekknotrans” was one of my favourite discoveries that you served up in BJSC last year, a lot of your entries I was previously aware of but that was a lovely little discovery.

The Chems came back really strong this year, great to see “No Reason” appear. My favourite singles from them this year were “Live Again” and “Goodbye” - the latter recently going Top 3.

I think 'Another Place' just existed in their live sets for more than a decade but only got an official release and master last year so it is technically still a new track magic.gif Agree about those percussive hooks, they really go off live as well!

'Live Again' is my fave from this Chems era. Loved 'Goodbye' when the album came out but overplayed it by the time it was picked as a post-album single, although I'm quite liking the DJ Seinfeld remix of it at the moment.

Thanks for the comments guys wub.gif

61-65

61. Sofia Kourtesis - Si Te Portas Benito (28-4-3-9-33-18-12-22-50-45-xx) [10 wks]
62. Aphex Twin - in a room7 F760 (42-18-14-7-34-23-24-41-42-33-27-49-xx) [12 wks]
63. yeule - sulky baby (45-32-20-36-45-34-45-48-19-26-40-xx) [11 wks]
64. Art School Girlfriend - Real Life (35-18-16-15-11-7-14-46-43-37-xx) [10 wks]
65. Willo - RUSH (Blush) (12-7-14-6-9-12-22-24-41-48-xx) [10 wks]

Rising Australian producer Willo scored her 4th k👠th chart top 10 hit with the dreamy 'RUSH (Blush)'. She recently opened for HAAI, Flume and DJ Seinfeld. 2023 was a massive year for Art School Girlfriend with 'Real Life' being 1 of 5 top 10 hits she racked up on my chart in a single year. I love the euphoric strings and deep lyrics on this one.

yeule's 'sulky baby' got a bit unlucky on my chart by only peaking at #19, but had a pretty good chart run in the end. I'm a sucker for a dreamy shoegaze vibe it seems. Every time Aphex Twin's 'in a room7 F760' was playing, I picked up on a new instrument or production trick that fascinated me and made me look forward to hearing it again. Sofia Kourtesis makes her 2nd appearance on the countdown with the captivating samba house track 'Si Te Portas Benito' which roughly translates to 'If You Behave Nice'. The song was inspired by Sofia becoming open to love and dating again after years of looking after her family and taking antidepressants.

56-60

56. Polinski - Distant Friend, I Love You! (48-14-10-18-12-14-41-48-28-24-27-37-xx) [12 wks]
57. Flansie & Mall Grab - You (32-3-4-5-6-20-22-25-31-xx) [9 wks]
58. TDJ & Vitesse X - Into Dream (7-3-4-3-9-6-6-32-...) [8 wks]
59. Nabihah Iqbal - Sunflower (22-12-12-12-7-16-31-10-10-34-xx) [10 wks]
60. Overmono - Calling Out (3-1-2-2-17-19-22-27-38-xx) [9 wks]

Overmono, who have 5 singles in this countdown, had a commercial breakthrough in 2023, a year after being sent to BJSC by yours truly. 'Calling Out' became their 3rd number one on my chart. The CASISDEAD and slowthai-sampling track has an intense buildup of trance synths and 2-step beats. Nabihah Iqbal's biggest hit on my chart to-date is the lovely 'Sunflower' which is inspired by a William Blake poem and is one of her more electronic style tracks. The gorgeous music video was filmed about a half hour away from where I live.

I lost my shit when TDJ and Vitesse X, 2 Kathaldazia faves, collabed on the suitably dreamy 'Into Dream' which spent an impressive 7 weeks in my top 10 and is still chatting right now. Known for his production on Yeat and Trippie Redd songs, Flansie teamed up with Mall Grab on 2 singles that feature in this EOY. The first being the high-nrg and ETOTW poll winner 'You'. This one originally credited Mall Grab as the lead artist, but months later it got changed to Flansie - perhaps as a tactic to get attention from Mall Grab's big following. Polinski's 'Distant Friend, I Love You!' was a fab discovery from Doctor Blind's chart, the breakbeat tune spent 3 months on my chart. It is described as "a manifesto for friendship sculpted from scattershot beats and technicolour hyper melodies. An eruption of desperate utopia and pixel romance. A massive blast of expectation and ambition."

'You' is such an addictive tune from Flansie and Mall Grab (in whichever order) that made it to my Spotify Wrapped despite a short run on my chart, and 'Into Dream' is a blissfully quality collab - I went through the SPF INFINI 3 video, and of those I didn't know I particularly enjoyed 'Saut De L'Ange' towards the end, that's quite a banger!

Ty Jim! I'm glad you watched it! 'Saut De L'Ange' is great. I've gotten into 'Forget Me Never' now (entered my chart just last week). As soon as I'm bored of 1 track from mix, I'm in love with another laugh.gif

51-55

51. Pangaea - Installation (27-24-21-30-27-29-25-22-37-41-xx) [10 wks]
52. Overmono feat. St. Panther - Walk Thru Water (...-1-4-7-7-9-24-16-18-35-42-44-xx) [11 wks]
53. Juicy Romance - In the Lights (25-7-18-11-2-14-36-24-15-38-44-50-xx) [12 wks]
54. Tove Lo - I like u (50-40-33-42-10-5-21-18-16-22-31-xx) [10 wks]
55. Villager - Blind Eye (28-7-15-9-11-34-19-15-13-31-xx) [10 wks]

Alex Young aka Villager's 2nd and highest appearance in the countdown is 'Blind Eye', a great example of his signature bouncy 2-step sound with its filtered pads, syncopated rhythms and shuffling garage hi-hats. He describes the track as "hyper dimensional mushroom club". Tove Lo scored her 3rd top 5 hit of the Dirt Femme era with the bop central that is 'I like u'. Tove says, "Lyrically I'm telling the story of my thoughts the first time I saw the love of my life. They're not clean but at least I never said any of them out loud."

The Scandalizer from down under, Juicy Romance, had a huge breakthrough on my charts since 'Hummer' smashed in BJSC. 'In the Lights' finds her in steamy indulgence and club floor hedonism mode. Overmono's massive Good Lies era kicked off with the subtle, hypnotic 'Walk Thru Water'. It spent 2 weeks at number one before the cut-off point for this countdown. Falling just shy of the top 50 is Pangaea's 'Installation' which I loved and listened to a lot more than its chart run and peak suggests. Infectious chopped vocals collide with a fidgeting bass line in what is described as "Dancefloor carnage with a techno-pop sensibility."

46-50

46. Slayyyter - Out of Time (18-12-9-10-7-14-25-39-33-21-26-xx) [11 wks]
47. The Chemical Brothers feat. Halo Maud - Live Again (12-6-14-23-27-24-21-17-17-16-32-xx) [11 wks]
48. Art School Girlfriend - Close to the Clouds (29-7-10-32-16-10-20-36-27-20-37-xx) [11 wks]
49. Mall Grab - Tremors (15-18-16-20-35-38-20-16-23-24-41-xx) [11 wks]
50. Pangaea - If (6-1-5-6-5-5-8-21-34-...) [9 wks]

Back-to-back Pangaea! Unlike 'Installation', 'If' was an instant smash on my chart, benefitting from being released alongside his acclaimed album Changing Channels which got an 8.3 from Pitchfork. The building dub techno chord progression on this is so satisfying along with the chopped 'If you love me too...' hook. Mall Grab makes a 4th appearance, this time with 'Tremors', a single that promoted the deluxe release of his debut album What I Breathe. Another total heater from him.

'Close to the Clouds' was another wistful, introspective single from Art School Girlfriend. The message of becoming content with your passed youth really struck a chord with me. My fave from the recent Chemical Brothers era was their kick ass collab with French psych-pop singer Halo Maud 'Live Again' which also reached #34 on the Multichart. A right stomper with layer upon layer of synths, riffs and yearning vocal lines. Slayyyter kicked off her STARf***ER era flawlessly with 'Out of Time', her most polished pop track to-date. She really injected it with the vocals and hooks on this one. Not as god-tier as 'Troubled Paradise', but pretty damn close.
