Conservative MP David Amess has been stabbed whilst attending a meeting in his constituency in Leigh. It’s not clear the extent of his injuries yet, but it’s very troubling to see a public representative being attacked, especially given it’s been a few years since Jo Cox was killed in similar circumstances.

Hard to believe that the UK has had another political assassination, while he was meeting with his constituents at that. |

BREAKING NEWS. David Amess 69, murdered in his constituency office in front of workers and constituents, before armed police officers storm surgery and arrest a 25 year-old man at gunpoint.
He was married with 5 children and his wife was his case worker and secretary in his constituency office. He had some minor roles in the 90's Commons, so called "bag-carrier" to Ministers including Edwina Currie. Never was bothered about being a minister though. Content to just serve his constituents. Brings back sad memories of Jo Cox and also our MP, Stephen Timms, who was stabbed badly but survived.

In his early years as an MP, he gained a reputation for shoehorning the name of his constituency (Basildon at the time) into every Commons utterance, regardless of the subject. He was so shameless in doing so that he became a bit of a laughing stock. When he switched to Southend in 1997 (knowing that he had no chance of holding Basildon), he did the same with that town. His gurning face when he held Basildon in 1992 (signalling that the Tories were on course for a majority) was one of the defining moments of that election night.
All that made him very unpopular with non-Tories, but this news is truly dreadful. There have been far too many attacks on MPs going about their duties, including death threats issued to many of them. Today's attack on an MP, regardless of party, is an attack on democracy itself. |

A 25 year-old man arrested at the scene by a police armed response team. Sky say he made no attempt to escape really.

I saw the breaking news notifications gradually unfold on my phone from something seemingly small to this and it was awful. I admittedly knew very little of him, but this should never happen to anyone :'(

What's the answer though? The government has said in the past that we just can't afford to protect all 650 MP's 24/7 with armed protection officers like the PM, Home Sec, Defence Sec. and N. Ireland Sec. have.

It's absolutely awful but this type of behaviour is far more likely when politics become as divisive as they over recent years in the UK. Not that it's any excuse at all obviously.

I was saddened by the death of James Brokenshire recently but this is more shocking of course because of the circumstances. Security for all MPs definitely needs to be increased.

Absolutely horrific and very sad news. I still remember the moment when the news of Jo Cox's murder broke and the immense shock and sadness of it. Completely senseless, although IMO it remains frankly bizarre that there is so little security (metal detector etc.) even though it is regrettable at these surgeries where MPs are clearly so vulnerable.

London with about 4 protection officers surrounding her the other day. No-one could get near her. Maybe it will have to be like that for all MP's now. Horrible news!
On a broader debate the security for all public reps is terrible, before the pandemic I would regularly go down and interview members of the public in my job and only two rooms are screened and you don’t know who your dealing with. Once some guy went bloody mental at me out of seemingly nothing and the security just stood outside the door of the room doing f*** all and letting him rant and point his finger at me. He could have jumped over the table and stabbed me for all I knew! |
