Alan Jones says that David Bowie is only the 4th Act to replace himself at No.1

Thanks for that. I meant to mention The Beatles, but forgot. Their achievement was remarkable in that With The Beatles climbed to number one (taking six weeks to do so) and then stayed at the top until the follow-up album took over. They then did the same with their next pair of albums. The only other album to top the chart in that period was Rolling Stones No. 2. Dylan's self-replacement came immediately after renewed runs for both the Stones album and Beatles For Sale. Those three artists monopolised the top op the chart for 108 weeks from May 1963.
The Mike Oldfield story is also a strange story as Tubular Bells didn't reach number one until after the release of Hergest Ridge. Who could now hum a tune from Hergest Ridge? |
