I was objecting to Cameron and Osborne using a select committee for their games. Still, it's not the first time Cameron has shown a contempt for parliament. Asking someone if they'll rule out a tax rise they've shown a penchant for in the past is a 'political game'? It's not as if it would count as some egregious 'political game' if in Opposition David Cameron were asking Ed Miliband if he'd rule out a rise in National Insurance. It *is* a ridiculous political game to give a false statement of the government's intentions to a Select Committee for the express purpose of luring the opposition into a trap. |

Robert Peston reports both Labour and Tory have ruled out for the whole of the next parliament any tax rises, give or take the odd mansion tax. Apparently it looks like particular groups (older) will be hit instead, unless there are some magic income streams about to be announced.
Speaking as someone who both works for local government and is struggling, and is in dire need of help from social services for two seriously ailing parents (the first question asked being, after eventually deigning to turn up, what do you want and can we see your bank accounts please), can I just say they can both go *%$£@ themselves as far as I'm concerned in terms of me ever voting for them. They created this mess between them and seem intent on doing little to help other than change the law to make it even easier to make being old a profitable income stream for them, while paying lip service to the principle of keeping people in their own homes - till they die of course at which point they get the house - when the real reason is it's much cheaper to get the family to do it, especially if they are forced to give up work and live with little income to do so. Still, I'm sure on 1st April everything will change when the new law comes in..... Seems like the filthy rich really are unreachable and immune to laws and society contributions like us peasants. They haven't ruled out 'any tax rises' - Labour have ruled out rises in the basic and higher (but not top) rates of income tax, VAT and National Insurance - primarily because they're all the ones that would hit people struggling at the moment. It's 60% of tax revenues but it isn't ruling out all tax rises at all, let alone those on the wealthiest.

4-point Labour lead in the first poll taken after the debate. Probably an outlier, but has prompted meltdown among the Tories at Politicalbetting, with this post being the highlight:

Interestingly, another poll said that of people who watched the non-debate, more trusted Ed+Ed to run the economy than Gideon and Dave. Widely recognised that slightly more Labour supporters were watching but it may be telling for the undecideds.

I'd normally be inclined to call it an outlier (he says, desperately trying to fight against confirmation bias), but those jumps for Ed's leadership scores! I think it's likely to be the start of a trend, though of course we need to wait before we get too excited.
