Group-winning trainer Ed Vaughan is to quit the profession later this year and has cited British racing's prize-money as the chief reason for his decision.

Vaughan worked for Darley and was assistant to Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer Noel Chance and Charlie Mann before linking up with Alec Stewart in Newmarket.

When Stewart died in 2004, Vaughan took out a licence and has sent out a steady stream of winners.

They included Robin Hoods Bay, who won the Group 3 Winter Derby at Lingfield in 2014 and Anthony Oppenheimer's Dame Malliot, successful at Group 2 level in the Princess of Wales's Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket's July festival last week.

However, the financial climate and reductions in prize-money, this season made worse by the coronavirus pandemic, has forced him to call time on his training career in Britain, although he raised the possibility of returning to the training ranks elsewhere.

Enable could face a tidal wave of runners from Ballydoyle in her bid for a historic third King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Saturday as Aidan O'Brien on Monday refused to rule out running all six of his entries.

O'Brien and Enable's trainer John Gosden are the only two handlers that can be represented in Britain's most prestigious all-age mile and a half Group 1, with the Ballydoyle battalion holding the numerical advantage six to two.

Stradivarius won the Goodwood Cup for a record fourth time under jockey Frankie Dettori on Tuesday.

The six-year-old winner, trained by John Gosden, was conceding weight to some rivals and briefly looked short of room approaching the final furlong.

But Dettori stayed calm on the 4-7 favourite, and powered clear of runner-up Nayef Road (20-1) with Santiago (15-8) finishing third.

Mohaather produced a stunning turn of foot to win a dramatic Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

The 3-1 shot ridden by Jim Crowley for trainer Marcus Tregoning struggled for room before surging clear of runner-up Circus Maximus, with favourite Siskin third.

"He's an absolute aeroplane. He's done it the hard way, everything went wrong for him," said Crowley.

Battaash eclipsed his own track record as he claimed the King George Qatar Stakes for the fourth successive year at Glorious Goodwood in 55.62 seconds.

The Charlie Hills-trained six-year-old, who was also an impressive winner at Royal Ascot last month, raced home by two and a quarter lengths.

On a warm day on good to firm ground on the Sussex Downs, he passed the post in under 56 seconds for the first time.

Glass Slippers was second, with 100-1 Ornate was another neck away in third.

Favourite Fujaira Prince held off Glencadam Glory to claim victory in the Ebor Handicap at York.

The Roger Varian-trained six-year-old, ridden by Andrea Atzeni, surged clear to become a rare winning favourite of this race.

The last successful favourite came in 2007, with the Luca Cumani-trained Purple Moon.

Cartmel, the smallest racecourse in Britain, scores a big first on Sunday by being screened on terrestrial television for the first time I can remember. I wonder if its bigger neighbour at Carlisle will get a chance as they do have three fairly important meetings.

chief executive of the Jockey Club has resigned after an independent inquiry upheld allegations of bullying, racist comments and the circulation of offensive material.

Delia Bushell, who had been in the role since September 2019, tendered her resignation on Sunday, having been informed that disciplinary action had begun "on the grounds of gross misconduct".

It is understood the barrister who led the investigation also found evidence of witness tampering by Bushell.

Jim Crowley rode his 2,000th career winner in Britain aboard Modmin at Goodwood - becoming only the fifth current Flat jockey to reach the milestone.

The former champion jockey, 42, joins Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore, Joe Fanning and Jamie Spencer.

His wins are over jumps and Flat combined.

Jump racing at Southwell has been suspended with immediate effect after the recent spate of equine fatalities at the course continued at Thursday's evening fixture.

The BHA was already investigating the circumstances in which six horses lost their lives at the track in less than a month since the resumption of jump racing.

With two further fatalities on Thursday a decision was made to close the jumps track at the dual-purpose course.

After the fixture, during which Cillian's Well and Day Of Roses suffered fatal injuries in the first two races, the track's owner Arena Racing Company and the BHA released a joint statement saying jump racing would not take place at the Nottinghamshire track until the investigation was concluded.

Jack Kennedy will make his eagerly anticipated return from injury a week earlier than expected at Punchestown on Wednesday, with the rider engaged aboard two mounts for his boss Gordon Elliott.

The 21-year-old has not ridden in public since breaking his leg in a fall at the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown in February and had recently earmarked the Listowel Harvest festival later this month as a possible return.

Frankie Dettori is resigned to missing important domestic Group 1 action such as Dubai Future Champions Weekend as a result of the quarantine regulations connected to his two upcoming trips to France.

Dettori missed last month's Ebor meeting at York in order to make a cross-channel trip to Deauville where he racked up two big-race wins, including the success of Palace Pier in the Prix Jacques le Marois.

Having only come out of quarantine from that trip a week ago, Dettori is now set to have a similar eight-day period of isolation after this weekend when he is to partner Stradivarius in the Group 2 Prix Foy at Longchamp.

Ghaiyyath is among 13 top-quality entries for the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes (4.10) at Leopardstown on Saturday.

The five-year-old, who also holds an entry in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, was last seen landing the Juddmonte International.

He could once again line up against Lord North, winner of the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, and last year's Arc third Sottsass. Barney Roy is also among the entries for Charlie Appleby.

Doncaster Racecourse has been told by local health officials to stop spectators attending its St Leger meeting after Wednesday's opening day.

"On the grounds of public health and public safety I have instructed the course to hold the St Leger Festival behind closed doors from tomorrow," said Dr Rupert Suckling, director of Public Health for Doncaster.

More than 2,500 spectators bought tickets for Doncaster on Wednesday as the Leger meeting started amid uncertainty over new government rules.

It was the first crowd at a British horse racing fixture in six months - since the coronavirus pandemic lockdown - as part of a government pilot scheme for sporting events.

Arena Racing Company (Arc), which runs Doncaster Racecourse, confirmed the remainder of the four-day meeting will be held without spectators. It says the decision will cost the company about £250,000.

Enable is in great form to "attempt the impossible" of winning a third Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris next month, according to trainer John Gosden.

The six-year-old sailed through her second piece of work since her warm up win at Kempton two weeks ago on the Al Bahathri in Newmarket on Saturday morning, watched by her owner Khalid Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe among others.

Sottsass won a dramatic Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as Enable finished sixth in her attempt to win Europe's richest race for a record third time.

The first five home were trained in France, with Sottsass (13-2) finishing ahead of In Swoop and Persian King.

A stewards' inquiry took place into interference between runners but the result was not affected.

Sottsass, ridden by Cristian Demuro for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, was third behind Waldgeist and Enable in 2019.

Enable has been retired from racing.

The six-year-old horse finished sixth when seeking a historic third Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe victory on 4 October.

Enable, ridden by Frankie Dettori for Newmarket trainer John Gosden, won a record third King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July.

"I did cry last night. It was a bit of an emotional moment because we were thinking about rolling the dice one more time," Dettori told the Guardian.

"Now that I know that she's safe and she's gone, I'm able to slowly be touched by emotions and just look at the wider picture. She's done so brilliant for all of us and I love her."

Her brilliant career yielded 11 victories at the top Group One level - including two in the Arc, Europe's richest race, in 2017 and 2018.

Enable's owners Juddmonte, which is headed by Saudi prince Khalid Abdullah, said she would begin a breeding career next year and her first partner will be leading stallion Kingman.

"Enable has retired happy and sound after an extraordinary career," said Gosden.

"Her daily presence has been a joy and her record in Group Ones including four Oaks, three King Georges, two Arcs, an Eclipse and a Breeders' Cup Turf is a marvel and unprecedented."
