A bit late starting this in April, but I've only just finalised it so thought I'd post it for a change.

In the last few weeks I've listened to (in a rough ascending order) the 868 songs I put on regular rotation which I first discovered in 2023, the majority are from that year and anything that's been considered for a year-end chart is with the occasional late 2022 straggler. I have ranked the songs by preference, by how much I've listened to them from my last.fm and how they performed on my Personal chart, awarding points to the top 200 from each, 200-1, so 600 points being the maximum. Where there is a tie, I have awarded the higher position to the one I ranked higher by preference. Before starting, here are my number 1 single from each of the previous years I have done an end of year chart.

2002: Doves - There Goes The Fear
2003: The Libertines - Time For Heroes
2004: Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
2005: The Futureheads - Hounds of Love
2006: Stellastarr* - Sweet Troubled Soul
2007: Robyn feat. Kleerup - With Every Heartbeat
2008: Elbow - One Day Like This
2009: Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes
2010: Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce - Telephone
2011: Bon Iver - Holocene
2012: Blur - Under The Westway
2013: Jagwar Ma - The Throw
2014: Tokyo Police Club - Argentina (Parts I, II, III)
2015: Jamie xx feat. Romy - Loud Places
2016: Japandroids - Near to The Wild Heart of Life
2017: Everything Everything - A Fever Dream
2018: DMA's - For Now
2019: Daughter - Poke
2020: Phoebe Bridgers - I Know The End
2021: Wolf Alice - The Last Man on Earth
2022: Metric - Doomscroller

All entries include total number of entries for that act, plus previous peak. Anything without are all the first time the act has appeared.

100 308 Wunderhorse - Purple
99 309 Skream - Thinking Of You
98 309 James Blake - Tell Me (12, Radio Silence - #12, 2016)
97 315 The Joy Formidable - Share My Heat (7, Whirring - #4, 2011)
96 315 DMA's - Fading Like a Picture (11, For Now - #1, 2018)
95 319 Cassö feat. RAYE & D-Block Europe - Prada
94 319 Ben Howard - Walking Backwards (14, Keep Your Head Up - #5, 2011)
93 322 Fontaines DC - Cello Song (9, Boys In The Better Land - #3, 2019)
92 323 The Hives - Bogus Operandi (4, Hate To Say I Told You So - #16, 2002)
91 324 The Sherlocks - Going Nowhere (2, Was It Really Worth It? - #95, 2017)

A lot of previously successful acts in this first 10, including a long awaited Hives comeback, a Fontaines DC Nick Drake cover/tribute and James Blake moving into the top 10 acts with the most amount of entries. Skream gets a debut 12 years after a first chart entry, sneaking in along with Wunderhorse. One of the very few UK charting hits to appear being one featuring D-Block Europe would've seemed absolutely shocking a year ago, but such was the job Cassö did turning them into a banger, here they are. The longest song to feature is a 15 minute epic from The Joy Formidable, an expert band in long songs they went a step further and appear for a 7th time.

90 333 Daughter - Dandelion (5, Poke - #1, 2019)
89 335 Real Lies - Shirley Road (9, Late Arcades - #3, 2021)
88 340 blink-182 - One More Time (5, Bored To Death - #3, 2016)
87 341 Everything Everything - Cold Reactor (7, A Fever Dream - #1, 2017)
86 342 Softcult - Dress
85 346 The Drums - I Want It All (11, Ambulance - #9, 2021)
84 351 Nitin Sawhney feat. Hak Baker - Ancestral
83 353 Pale Blue Eyes - Heating's On
82 357 Hatchie - Jai Alai (8, This Enchanted - #4, 2021)
81 357 Barry Can't Swim feat. Somedeadbeat - Deadbeat Gospel

A significant number of previously successful acts in this set of 10, with 3 of them having recently peaked in 2021, The Drums still on top form with recent output, Real Lies with another song typical of their successful sound and Hatchie getting an 8th entry in 7 years with her version of a DMA's track. Two previous #1 acts appear too, Daughter with the first track from their long awaited return and Everything Everything with easily the best song of their current era. Four debutants from Pale Blue Eyes' indie-pop, the shoegazey Softcult, the best track I've heard from Barry Can't Swim and an interesting collab from the multi-talented Nitin Sawhney and some interesting lyrics from Hak Baker.

80 360 Glimji & Elphi - Blush
79 360 Art School Girlfriend - Heaven Hanging Low
78 360 Slowthai - Selfish (3, Doorman (feat. Mura Masa) - #48, 2019)
77 361 The Streets - Troubled Waters (8, Weak Become Heroes - #2, 2002)
76 366 The Hold Steady - Understudies (7, Stuck Between Stations - #5, 2007)
75 366 Heartworms - 24 Hours (2, Consistent Dedication - #54, 2022)
74 370 Confidence Man feat. Daniel Avery - On & On (Again) (2, Feels Like a Different Thing - #50, 2022) (2, Knowing We'll Be Here - #92, 2014)
73 375 The Goa Express - Good Luck Charm
72 377 George Clanton - I Been Young
71 383 Thus Love - Repetitioner

Another batch mixed of debutants and previously successful acts. Mike Skinner's recent career has been hit and miss but Trouble Waters was a good return single from a first proper album in a while. Confidence Man continued to grow in my affections after getting to them a bit late, and The Hold Steady came back in their classic sound with a couple of top 10 singles. At the start of the year Heartworms was probably who I anticipated music from the most in 2023, and she didn't disappoint with what she released, 24 Hours being the first song to chart. I'm sure Selfish would've ended up much higher (and Sooner charted) but I stopped listening to Slowthai because y'know. Art School Girlfriend was close to three entries but in the end has to settle for just one with her best song of the year Heaven Hanging Low, Blush was an earworm I listened to loads, Good Luck Charm is a bit indie-by-numbers but is great fun, George Clanton the first of a few BJSC entries to appear, and Thus Love were a big favourite of mine in the early part of the year.

'Repetitioner' is my favourite to appear so far, the guitar sound is towering and evocative. I also charted 'Purple', 'Prada', 'Going Nowhere', 'Cold Reactor' and 'Jai Alai', the last of which I think I discovered from your chart.

70 386 The Drums - Obvious (12, Ambulance - #9, 2021)
69 386 Fred Again.. feat. The Streets & Dermot Kennedy - Mike (Desert Island Duvet) (3, Stay High Again - #73, 2021) (9, Weak Become Heroes - #2, 2002)
68 389 Palace - When Everything Was Lost (4, Shame On You - #25, 2022)
67 390 Pale Blue Eyes - Takes Me Over (2, Heating's On - #83, 2023)
66 391 Django Django feat. Self Esteem - Complete Me (4, Default - #41, 2012) (6, I Do This All The Time - #2, 2021)
65 393 Overmono - Is U
64 393 The Big Moon - 2 Lines (4, Wide Eyes - #16, 2022)
63 394 Graywave - Blur Into One
62 403 The Go! Team - Gemini (8, Buy Nothing Day - #2, 2011)
61 403 Romy - She's On My Mind (5, Loud Places (feat. Jamie xx) - #1, 2015)

The first acts to get a second entry of the year appear now, The Drums with a 12th overall becoming the 12th act to reach that milestone, The Streets are back with Fred Again.. who goes to a new peak, 2023 was really the year I got properly into Fred, and Pale Blue Eyes whose album is a lot of fun, and one of the best acts I saw live last year who have tonnes of energy. Palace seem to release a single off each album that I love and that continued, Django Django and Self Esteem collaborated for a second time with great effect again. Overmono and Graywave both debut, the latter's heavy shoegaze sound I discovered seeing them as a support act. The Go! Team's last album was their best in ages and Gemini followed Whammy-O as being a great song from it, and Romy's standout banger rounds this bunch off.

60 408 HEALTH - Ashamed (9, Stonefist - #26, 2015)
59 414 SHEE - Win Your Love
58 417 DMA's - Get Ravey (12, For Now - #1, 2018)
57 421 Gabriels - Glory (2, Love and Hate in a Different Time - #50, 2021)
56 427 Daughter - Swim Back (6, Poke - #1, 2019)
55 432 Enola Gay feat. Mount Palomar - Terra Firma
54 433 Heartworms - May I Comply (3, Consistent Dedication - #54, 2022)
53 434 Baby Queen - Dream Girl
52 437 Blur - The Narcissist (5, Under The Westway - #1, 2012)
51 440 The Orielles - Tableau 002 (4, Beam/s - #9, 2022)

A couple more BJSC entries here, from Enola Gay and SHEE. Win Your Love is the second best song I discovered from the Electronic Tracks polls, and both were entered into the competition at a later date. HEALTH returned with another album this year, and the standout Ashamed gets a standard end of year spot, Demigods not far off the list to give them a 10th overall entry. DMA's follow The Drums in getting a 12th entry, they're one of three here to have their 2nd of 3 entries, with Daughter and Heartworms also having bigger hits to come, the latter reaching the same position as last year. Gabriels and Baby Queen are also still to appear, and it's Blur and The Orielles who just miss out on the top half, the latter's Tableau EP representing a different sound to the one I first loved by them a few years ago.

50 441 Swim School - Bored
49 444 Pendulum - Anti-Hero (Triple J Like a Version) (4, Propane Nightmares - #10, 2008)
48 457 Dry Cleaning - Kwenchy Kups (3, Strong Feelings - #43, 2021)
47 458 The Cost of Loving - Strings (Attached)
46 463 Jamie T - Hippodrome (5, The Old Style Raiders - #5, 2022)

Into the top half, beginning with Swim School who have been compared to Wolf Alice, and Bored is probably the song that sums that up most. Australian radio station Triple J's Like a Version is an equivalent of the radio 1 live lounge, where acts perform a song of their own and a cover, some of which have become incredibly popular over the years. A few have made my own chart but Pendulum have by far the most successful one, with Anti-Hero becoming my first new number one of 2024 and they take it 18 places higher than Taylor Swift did here last year, it's exactly as you'd expect it to sound and it works quite brilliantly, everything a cover version should be. Dry Cleaning reach the chart for the third consecutive year, and The Cost of Loving are comfortably the least known act to appear, after discovering them supporting Real Lies in 2022. Jamie T rounds this 5 off with Hippodrome, released just before his big Finsbury Park gig which I went to, and how much I enjoyed that certainly elevated that in my affections. It's surprising it's only his 5th top 100 entry, should have far more and there are some notable omissions.

45 464 Fred Again.. feat. Obongjayar - Adore U (4, Desert Island Duvet - #69, 2023)
44 466 Cleo Sol - Miss Romantic (3, Woman (feat. Little Simz) - #19, 2021)
43 466 Lovejoy - Portrait of a Blank Slate
42 470 Squid - The Blades
41 473 The Hold Steady - Sideways Skull (8, Stuck Between Stations - #5, 2007)

Kicking off here with Fred Again.. with another entry, peaking once more. Adore U sounded great when he performed it in his Glastonbury set and its release didn't disappoint, it's comfortably my favourite big hit of 2023. Cleo Sol gets a solo entry after two Little Simz collabs, her album last year was great and Miss Romantic is a lovely song from the SAULT singer. Lovejoy managed to hit the UK chart last year, not with this song but a couple of others that are decent. I was never fussed with what I'd heard from Squid previously but theirs was definitely an album of the year contender, The Blades the second great single from it. The Hold Steady's lead single, much more upbeat and rocky than their other entry, just misses the top 40 as this becomes the first year since their debut 2007 they score multiple top 100s.

40 481 Bob Vylan - He's a Man
39 481 Gabriels - Great Wind (3, Love and Hate in a Different Time - #50, 2021)
38 485 The Blinders - Always
37 487 Yuné Pinku - Night Light (2, Fai Fighter - #80, 2022)
36 488 The Chemical Brothers feat. Beck - Skipping Like a Stone (14, The Golden Path - #7, 2003) (4, Wide Open - #12, 2015)

One act get their second of two hits, whilst three more get their first of two. Gabriels album last year is absolutely magnificent, and Great Wind is such a feelgood anthem, delighted they got as much mainstream attention as they did last year. Bob Vylan were an act I'd heard of and seen mentioned but never actually checked out until last year, He's a Man the second great song packing a lyrical punch, Yuné Pinku followed up a good 2022 with some more bangers earlier in the year, Night Light being the first of two top 5 singles, and The Chemical Brothers and Beck teamed up once more after doing so to great success with Wide Open a few years ago. I liked some of The Blinders' second album in 2020, but Always was their first big hit for me - I think I can safely say they'll beat a #38 peak in 2024s list.

My favourites in the last few sections - 'win your love', 'The Narcissist', and the last three, especially 'Night Light'.

35 490 Chase & Status feat. ArrDee & Hedex - Liquor & Cigarettes (3, Program - #60, 2019)
34 493 Headache - The Beginning of the End
33 501 Thus Love - In Tandem (2, Repetitioner - #71, 2023)
32 508 Vegyn feat. Lauren Auder - Halo Flip
31 509 Nabinah Iqbal - This World Couldn't See Us

Chase & Status kick this 5 off with just their third end of year entry, Control & Program a quite random pairing of previous hits and certainly an act who I like far more than the credit I've given them here. Big hit Baddadan wasn't something I was able to get into but its follow-up is quite superb, and is the highest placed "hit" song here. The Beginning of the End was the best 2023 song I discovered in BJSC last year, slightly odd considering it was entered in the one contest I didn't take part in! Its uniqueness really hits hard and its lyrical content is superb. It was produced by Vegyn, who also appears in this 5 with his hit Halo Flip. Thus Love get a second entry with a big hit from early in the year, containing some excellent guitar work and This World Couldn't See Us gives Nabinah Iqbal an entry and makes this a BJSC heavy grouping.

I've listened through a few of the earlier ones I didn't know - 'Dandelion' is possibly my favourite I've heard from Daughter so far, and 'Share My Heat' is a real epic that doesn't feel as long as it is - could envisage The Joy Formidable doing quite well in BJSC or UP with something like that!

30 513 Yard Act - The Trench Coat Museum
29 513 Hak Baker - Doolally
28 516 Ellis - Forever (2, Shame - #31, 2020)
27 518 Baby Queen - We Can Be Anything (2, Dream Girl - #53, 2023)
26 519 Daughter - Be On Your Way (7, Poke - #1, 2019)

For Yard Act, see comments on Squid. To say I didn't take to their first album would be an understatement, but an 8 minute long ode to trench coats pulled me in. Hak Baker is the first of 4 songs I entered to BJSC last year in the top 30, The Streets but from London was an accurate description of Doolally. Ellis was a song contest discovery a few years ago with Shame, and lead single for her next record goes three places higher for the singer-songwriter. Baby Queen's Dream Girl follow-up made it an incredible pair of pop songs, and Daughter's long-awaited full return got them a second number one hit after Poke.

25 520 Dead Leaf Echo - Call
24 522 Bob Vylan - Dream Big (2, He's a Man - #40, 2023)
23 532 Squid - Swing (In a Dream) (2, The Blades - #42, 2023)
22 534 Special Interest - Cherry Blue Intention
21 536 DJ Seinfeld feat. Confidence Man - Now U Do (3, Feels Like a Different Thing - #50, 2022)

All five of these songs were the first charting hit for the artist in question for me. US Shoegaze kick off this section in the form of Dead Leaf Echo. Bob Vylan and Squid's debut entries appeared almost side-by-side and their second entries do, around 20 places higher for the punk and post-punk acts, with more of the same following for Special Interest, whose Cherry Blue Intention became a number one early in the year. Now U Do was also a chart topper, aided from seeing Confidence Man perform it on the festival circuit, as they knocked it out the park once again.

Thanks for continuing to comment Jim, really pleased to see you've been checking some out. I had entered The Joy Formidable to Nuggets, about 3 years ago probably, with another of their longer songs The Leopard & The Lung, they have a few 6+ minutes ones and they're a real favourite band of mine. Share My Heat was certainly a contender for BJSC entry at one point.

There's lots in here I don't know that well this year - I've allowed myself to get quite out of touch since I stopped creating a chart. However, I have already made one great discovery in the form of Poke - that completely passed me by in 2019 but it's brilliant!

...and I'll stick with Daughter as I do know and really love Be On Your Way, definitely one of my most listened to tracks last year so glad to see it feature here. I also like that Baby Queen track, I tried the album and whilst I thought it was okay I found most of the best songs were crammed at the beginning. The Trench Coat Museum is another good one, completely unexpected return from them but I ended up loving it more than anything from their debut - I must listen to their new album soon as I haven't quite got round to paying it attention yet.

My two main favourites though are Nabihah Iqbal and, of course, Headache. I loved Zone 1-6000 back when it came out but I think I now prefer This World Couldn't See Us... and the album was definitely better than her debut, even if some of it was quite subtle shoegaze and needed to grow. I didn't really pick a favourite album last year but I'm reasonably sure it would have been the Headache one (possible challenge from Yves Tumor though) - it's just such a unique listen and I'm still listening to it a lot even now. Will be interesting to see if they can progress from it, I wasn't as wowed by the single they released afterwards and I could imagine it being a case where too many tracks may just water down the whole project - but we'll see...

I'll try to check out some of the ones I'm not familiar with - although please do point me in the direction of anything you think I should start with, otherwise I'll be starting from #1 downwards seeing as that's the most obvious thing to do!
