Lead single from Dua Lipa's second album Future Nostalgia called "Don't Start Now", which was released on November 1. The track was produced by Ian Kirkpatrick.

From https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-48880735:

The star said the album would be a "nostalgic" pop record. She couldn't say when it would be released - although she's https://www.elle.com/culture/a27075435/dua-lipa-grammy-interview/.

However, the star hinted the first single could arrive sooner than that.

Asked what she thought this year's "song of the summer" would be, she said: "I don't know if it's something coming from me or someone else..."

Posted by: Medellíam 5th July 2019, 08:26 PM

Does "nostalgic pop" mean music she grew up listening to, like early noughties vibe, or nostalgic in the lyrics?

I hope the former.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 5th July 2019, 08:57 PM

Watch Buzzjack ironically stan it :’)

Posted by: Botchia 6th July 2019, 03:02 PM

Hoping for an August release for the single then!

Hoping for an August release for the single then!
I hope the same to be honest. Ideally that should happen, so the album could be out in November or December at the latest, although I'm wondering if her and/or Warner are planning a Q1 release at this point.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 21st July 2019, 10:20 AM

I’d quite like a Q1 release from her tbh.

Q4 is better sales but in Q1 i think we’d have a better chance for #1 or maybe even a May / June release like what Gaga did with Born This Way.

Lead single around the BRITS followed by the album a few month later.

I think she’d benefit from having a bit of a extended break personally.

Her debut albums still top 40 and it hasn’t been that long since we had new Dua music.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 21st July 2019, 01:44 PM

I do think if she gets this right she could have her Teenage Dream era.

Posted by: 365 22nd July 2019, 02:26 PM

C'mon Dua, I hope this is amazing.

Posted by: Jack 22nd July 2019, 05:21 PM

I don't know why, I've just got a feeling that she won't do anywhere near as well as we would maybe expect her to do. It's just a gut feeling I have.

Posted by: 365 22nd July 2019, 06:04 PM

Female pop is so difficult to get right chart wise these days. She got incredibly lucky first time round but hopefully that continues.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 22nd July 2019, 07:10 PM

I think based off hype and her name alone the song should at least debut top 5

But it’s chart run will depend on the song itself.

Like it could have a chart run like Taylor’s ME! If it turns out people are disappointed by it or it could go on to become another New Rules / One Kiss.

Yes.

Posted by: 365 3rd October 2019, 02:51 PM

yasss it's correct then

Posted by: 365 3rd October 2019, 03:01 PM

1st of Nov is risky. I'd have released a couple of weeks earlier, given songs take 3/4 weeks to take off these days and Christmas songs will start cannibalising everything around then.

Posted by: Frenchie 3rd October 2019, 04:20 PM

A November 1st release is mega dangerous. This could easily get lost in all the Christmas nonsense.

Posted by: Wall 3rd October 2019, 05:02 PM

I’m actual worried for her considering every female right now is underperforming and November is very dangerous considering the Spotify top 50 will be full of Xmas songs

Posted by: LMLou 3rd October 2019, 05:11 PM

Hopefully she can stay off ACR until the new year and it can really take off then when the charts are quiet (that is, assuming it isn't a big hit before then which it very well could be)
I don't think this is by any means a guaranteed hit by name though, if it doesn't have a hit feel to it I fear she could do about as well as Camila is

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 3rd October 2019, 05:52 PM

Oh wow, so it's actually happening that soon!

I do really feel like she's in the position where she could have her Teenage Dream era (even on a worldwide scale) if they get it right.

Posted by: Botchia 3rd October 2019, 08:40 PM

Oh wow 1 November is a risky move with Christmas just around the corner and the potential for Adele to get a week or two jump on her if the rumours are to be believed.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 9th October 2019, 01:01 AM

This could easily be the “thank u, next” or “Shallow” like hit of the end of 2018.

Like one of the few songs doing well what wasn’t a Xmas track.

Her UK streams will be really good I think!

She’s one of the few females I think could get a high debut as well (again though just talking about the UK.

I’ll genuinely be surprised if she underperforms.

Ed Millett, who is one of the founders of TaP Management, confirmed to Variety that the lead single is coming in three weeks. You could read the article https://variety.com/2019/music/news/tap-management-expands-hailee-steinfeld-lana-del-rey-1203362923/.

QUOTE
The first single from Lipa's sophomore album drops on Nov. 1, the same day that Dickinson premieres. "It's more upbeat and dance-y with a disco element — there are no ballads," said Millett, who added that the Grammy winner's global arena tour will kick off in April.

Posted by: Juan Carlos 13th October 2019, 08:36 PM

Variety edited the article above, changing 'November 1' to 'soon', so it seems that it was something they shouldn't have posted. Either way, all of her tweets and Instagram posts are gone, so the announcement should be unveiled sooner than later.

Posted by: Frenchie 13th October 2019, 09:00 PM

I really don't get why some artists delete everything of their instagram before a new era, seems really extreme. Excited anyway!

Posted by: Juan Carlos 14th October 2019, 02:07 PM

It's called "Don't Start Now". She's shooting the music video in Brooklyn, NY and this is the title which is written in the clapperboard.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 23rd October 2019, 08:42 AM

She is actually going disco-esque!

I have a feeling this is gonna smash big style. I'll happily eat my words if it doesn't.

Posted by: Frenchie 23rd October 2019, 12:28 PM

Loving the funky vibe this has. This song is gonna make or break her career imo. Hopefully its a huge smash! dance.gif

Posted by: Juan Carlos 23rd October 2019, 12:33 PM

I wasn't ready for this.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 23rd October 2019, 02:18 PM

I’m getting slight Madonna vibes.

That clip sounds like part of God Control after the choir opening.

In terms of sound though it’ll probably be more like a Confessions era.

Really like the sound of it though. I know she had so much potential / a star quality esque feel about her

Edit; on second listen I can kinda hear Nothing Breaks Like A Heart.

She will be performing at the 2019 ARIA Music Awards in Australia on November 27.

The song's already growing on me, but the video is a bit disappointing - I've just come to expect something a lot more creative from Dua than just a club/party scene where she's just singing and dancing

Posted by: Juan Carlos 1st November 2019, 03:40 PM

Seriously, this is amazing and it's one of her best songs to date. The build-ups and that final chorus are so damn great as well. I applaud her for not following trends and chasing them instead because I wouldn't have expected her to be the one of the female pop solo acts to bring disco back in the late 10s.

This performance made me finally say...

"Oh OK. I GET IT now".

I never understood what people saw in her that made them go "SHE'S A STAR!" during her first era. Especially as a live performer. (Not that I disliked or particularly hated anything she'd done - I just always thought "why her?")

But now I get it. I understand.

I'm not really sold on the song as much as others it seems, but it IS growing with each play and I'm sure I'll be quoting this post in a page or two's time saying "HOW WRONG WAS I!!!!???!?"

I agree with this - it's not my favourite Dua song (although it is growing on me as I hoped it would) but she's really nailed this 'comeback', a great choice of song to kick off the new era. Very glad to see it doing so well for her.

Yes it's an improvement from how lacklustre her performances in the debut era were but we can still have higher standards for pop performances and not elevate mediocrity to life changing performances the second someone improves slightly. She still has a LOOOOONG way to go.

She did a good job.

It really wasn’t mediocre. I don’t think anyone has been acting like it’s one of the most groundbreaking performances of all time, however fans are delighted that Dua has clearly stepped up her game. She delivered a very confident, stylish and polished performance that just worked! She deserved praise for it.

For someone slated for her dancing & stage presence to do a full dance & singing performance with two sets of props AND a dance break as her comeback performance is to me impressive. No, it wasn't a top class dancer performance, but she's not primarily a dancer like some acts, with that in mind the level of complexity was a serve imo because its not like she *needed* to do that.

Yes the pre-chorus is great, but unfortunately for me it vastly outshines the chorus itself. You see, the pre-chorus is quite 'deep' and soulful I think, and very Becky Hill dance song-esque, it needed an equally deep and soulful chorus to go with that I think (or just a house-y instrumental with occasional lyrics (based on the 'if you don't want to see me' lines of the pre-chorus) in place of the chorus). Unfortunately it completely changes into upbeat disco-pop which doesn't really go I think.

Posted by: danG 12th November 2019, 03:53 PM

yeah I kinda get that, it feels like it’s about to have a Gryffin drop then it goes all disco.
speaking of which I’d love if this got a Gryffin remix.

the song is brilliant anyhow.

This is spot on! Nobody's even tried to compare the performance to Gaga because they're obviously on different levels, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate when Dua still serves up a brilliantly polished performance. She's come on so far from a year ago it's unreal!

Also I've not said yet but the song is superb, been in my head all week! Such a smart comeback single.

Posted by: RobBob 14th November 2019, 01:35 AM

This is SO gonna end up being a defining song of the year for me and has come at THE perfect time for me, like 'Party For One' did last year. I liked it on first listen and very quickly loved it, but nearly 2 weeks on and I'm loving it even more and wanting to play it more and more. I honestly didn't know she had it in her, New Rules almost felt lucky it landed in her lap and she's kind of been riding the wave expertly ever since but this really feels like the birth of who she comfortably knows she is as a popstar, the live performance confirming that. wub.gif

It seems to be doing better than 'New Rules' on US Spotify as well ('New Rules' peaked at #20 on the weekly Spotify charts, although was consistently in the 21-30 section for several months, while 'Don't Start Now' was #7 for its first week then had a couple more weeks top 20 before Christmas songs started pushing it down, but it returned to its second highest position of #16 last week), fingers crossed it'll be at least a second top 10 for her.

It's definitely not beyond the realms of possibility she could overtake Life Is Good next week, I don't think she'll have been far off this week. I don't think she has enough steam left in her to take the #1 from 'The Box' as she's still quite a way off. Either way, #2 or peaking at #3, this has been a monster success for her. So thrilled to see it wub.gif

Hmmm not quiet there yet tbh.

Don't forget how big New Rules was on YT as well.

It's complicated measuring popularity between them two outside the UK.

Like I see DSN peaked better in many countries and I can say that DSN actually established and made general public recognize her name...yeah it's more delicate than we think but both of them have done wonders for her career tbh.

Don't Start Now definitely feels like the bigger and more global hit to me. It got really unlucky being stuck at number 2 behind Dance Monkey on so many charts around the world.

It still has some way to go to overtake New Rules' Spotify and UK sales totals but could get there eventually. New Rules' UK sales total I am guessing is slightly inflated due to it being a 2017 release as well. New Rules will remain the bigger hit on YouTube though for obvious reasons, Don't Start Now is still only on 230million views there.

It will overtake its UK sales, that I'm wholly confident of!

As confirmed by Music Week, this is the longest running top 10 hit by a British female and joint-fourth longest overall!

It's disappointing that it was removed from Hot Hits because it had a shot at tying or surpassing Doris Day's 27wks sad.gif

Still, that record for British female is an incredible achievement! - especially in the age of ACR. ohmy.gif I can't see anyone (but herself lol) surpassing that anytime soon.

I’m ready for this to die off now.

Time to let Break My Heart properly shine. It’s done well enough and I’m thrilled it’s smashed but yeah I hope this goes onto reduced streams ratio soon x

Apparently it will go ACR a week after so her chances of surpassing Doris Day are currently ruined by the ACR rather than being removed from Hot Hits playlist!!!

Still 25 weeks in top 10 is an amazing feat as Scene mentioned in ACR era!!!

Oh and 26 weeks actually equals full 6 months in top 10 cheeseblock.png when will your faves!!!

Ian Kirkpatrick the producer of Don't Start Now has said

The one tune that’s been the object of his obsession lately is “Say So,” by Doja Cat—a track that, he said gives "Don't Start Now" a run for his money, with upbeat disco influences and all the makings of a timeless record. “That is the sound I wish I could have made ‘Don’t Start Now’ sound like,” he said. “I mean, I love ‘Don’t Start Now.’ I stand by it. But doesn’t that record sound so classy and beautiful?”

BMH #33 is amazing considering it peaked only #12 cheer.gif

It was really unlucky timing that Don't Start Now took off so late there and then the pandemic happened and she couldn't promote Break My Heart!

Still really impressive having 32 weeks on the chart for a #13 peaking single and higher on the year end chart than many top 10 hits including Rain On Me which was a #1!

#77 yesterday on Spotify and #79 today, probably not enough for it to re-enter with it being on ACR? Would really love for it to reach 52 weeks on the chart cry.gif

#6 on Apple Music! Its placement on the party playlists doing wonders! Hopefully it doesn't drop too much over the next few days so it can re-enter the chart for a 52nd week *.*

Almost unbelievable that was 2 years ago. It feels a year at the most.

After seeing her on Saturday this is again sounding so fresh wub.gif

It was the perfect show closer and a #1 that never was!

I don’t think there’s been a better female lead single since tbh.

Posted by: Bustin Jieber 25th April 2022, 08:02 PM

There hasn't.

It still sounds as magic as it did the moment I first heard it. wub.gif

Posted by: pippa 28th April 2022, 12:08 PM

Don't Start Now has the magic but a little less than Levitating.
