Last year saw a similar countdown with the full results below! For 2015, 22 series from that list return, and 5 series that didn't air in 2014 will make a reappearance in 2015's list, as well 13 brand new series/remakes! There are also 24 BBC One series, 15 ITV series and one BBC Two series.

Speculate now. There WILL be a different winner as Sherlock aired no episodes in 2015! ohmy.gif

I think the winner of this will be pretty obvious - you only need to loosely follow ratings to know which show has had huge success in 2015. I'm interested to see the rest of the list though.

36-40

36 | 24 | Vera - 5.76m | Highest = 6.05m (Ep. 1/4), Lowest = 5.59m (Ep. 3/4)
37 | NE | Foyle's War - 5.66m | Highest = 6.09m (Ep. 1/3), Lowest = 5.24m (Ep. 3/3)
38 | NE | Dickensian - 5.65m | Highest = 6.52m (Ep. 1/4), Lowest = 4.93m (Ep. 4/4)
39 | 33 | Benidorm - 5.59m | Highest = 6.61m (Ep. 1/7), Lowest = 4.94m (Ep. 6/7)
40 | NE | Partners in Crime - 5.54m | Highest = 7.95m (Ep. 1/6), Lowest = 4.05m (Ep. 6/6)

Partners in Crime starred David Walliams and Jessica Raine as a married detective duo, based from an Agatha Christie novel. It marked the 125th anniversary of Christie's death and it focused on two stories, each in three parts. Despite it's appearance here, it was not renewed for a second series with ratings having by the final episode. Benidorm continued it's strong performance for ITV with its seventh series, being their top rated comedy. The show is based in an all-inclusive hotel in Benidorm. Dickensian is an ambitious drama from BBC One that brings together characters that were created by Charles Dickens in one setting, no matter which book they came from. The first series consisted of 20 episodes, the first four of which aired over the Christmas period in 2015 and so it may be seen that it cheated its way into the Top 40, especially with the ratings dropping to around 3m in 2016. kink.gif Foyle's War is a detective series that is set around the Second World War. It aired its final series in 2015, with high costs being cited as the reason for the cancellation. However, it had been cancelled previously in 2007 but popular demand brought it back. Vera is the fourth programme in this section to feature a detective aspect, as it focuses on DCI Vera Stanhope who works in Northumberland. The fifth series aired in 2015 to continuing success.

31-40

31 | 36 | Countryfile - 6.16m | Highest = 7.84m (2nd Nov), Lowest = 2.65m (7th Jun)
32 | NE | Safe House - 6.15m | Highest = 6.91m (Ep. 1/4), Lowest = 5.66m (Ep. 3/4)
33 | NE | Peter Kay's Car Share - 5.86m | Highest = 6.85m (Ep. 1/6), Lowest = 4.56m (Ep. 2/6)
34 | NE | Ordinary Lies - 5.82m | Highest = 6.40m (Ep. 2/6), Lowest = 5.60m (Ep. 4/6)
35 | NE | Home Fires - 5.79m | Highest = 6.16m (Ep. 1/6), Lowest = 5.61m (Ep. 3/6)

Home Fires debuted its first series in 2015 and it explores the life of Women's Institute members on the Home Front during World War II. Ordinary Lies also aired its first series last year and it followed the format shows like The Syndicate by exploring an overall story but focusing on one character in each episode as each has their own different storyline. Each character has their own lie which leads to devastating consequences. Peter Kay's Car Share originally debuted in full on BBC iPlayer but that didn't stop it being a success in the ratings, giving Peter Kay another hit programme. It focuses on two co-workers in a Car Share on their travels both to and from work. Safe House sees a former policeman move to the Lake District where he is tasked with providing a safe house for a family under threat. Countryfile continues to go from strength to strength, managing to beat The X Factor on certain occasions and there is no doubt that the show will be even higher in next year's countdown. The show reports on rural and environmental issues in the United Kingdom.

26-30

26 | RE | The Syndicate - 6.46m | Highest = 6.65m (Ep. 6/6), Lowest = 6.31m (Ep. 3/6)
27 | 28 | Emmerdale - 6.30m | Highest = 7.39m (9th Feb), Lowest = 4.81m (3rd Jul)
28 | 25 | Top Gear - 6.29m | Highest = 6.92m (Ep. 8/8), Lowest = 5.84m (Ep. 7/8)
29 | 40 | New Tricks - 6.28m | Highest = 6.97m (Ep. 2/10), Lowest = 5.66m (Ep. 10/10)
30 | 16 | Doctor Who - 6.16m | Highest = 7.69m (The Husbands of River Song), Lowest = 5.61m (Sleep No More)

Doctor Who aired its ninth series since 2005 last year with a more darker tone and it is the lowest rated series since its return. The show follows the Doctor and his companion travelling through time and space. New Tricks is procedural comedy-drama that follows the work of retired police officers recruited to reinvestigate unsolved crimes. Following the departure of the entire original cast, the series ended last year after 12 series. Top Gear was one of the biggest talking points in the TV world last year due to an off-air fracas between Clarkson and a producer which led to Clarkson's dismissal, with Hammond and May following him to produce a new show for Amazon. Emmerdale continues to be the UK's third biggest soap and it was heavily praised last year for its quality. The show is based in a Yorkshire village. The Syndicate returned after a two year break and focused on an old stately home in Scarborough. It follows a syndicate who go on to win the lottery but significant consequences follow.

I don't really watch loads of TV (only trashy stuff like Geordie Shore and Ex on the Beach) and a few competition shows/documentaries but Peter Kay's Car Share was surprisingly great, they had great chemistry and the girl especially was hilarious, glad it's getting another series.

Crazy how low Countryfile hit last year given it's usually always over 6m! I assume it was a clash with football/rugby?

From what I've seen, Emmerdale is the most consistent out of the three big soaps in regards to ratings (and easily quality-wise too). Good to see it's only 200k down on 2014 and it had a higher lowest figure; just a shame a peak of 7.4m is kinda lacklustre.

Consistent for The Syndicate too, but this series was definitely down on the quality of the first two (lost its grittiness for a start), although still great to watch.

21-25

21 | NE | Black Work - 7.04m | Highest = 7.48m (Ep. 1/3), Lowest = 6.78m (Ep. 2/3)
22 | NE | Still Open All Hours - 6.89m | Highest = 8.39m (Ep 6/6 of Series 1), Lowest = 5.44m (Ep. 2/6 of Series 2)
23 | 29 | Inspector George Gently - 6.65m | Highest = 6.91m (Ep. 1/4), Lowest = 6.27m (Ep. 4/4)
24 | NE | The Casual Vacancy - 6.62m | Highest = 8.26m (Ep. 1/3), Lowest = 5.67m (Ep. 3/3)
25 | 21 | Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway - 6.58m | Highest = 7.30m (Ep. 1/7), Lowest = 5.64m (Ep. 7/7)

Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway is still going strong with its twelfth series in 2015. The show is a big variety entertainment show, the only show that says 'don't just watch the ads, WIN them!' The Casual Vacancy was a TV adaptation of JK Rowling's first post-Harry Potter novel. The series centered on a quaint English village, which held deep divisions between the rich and poor, children and their parents and wives against husbands. Inspector George Gently is set in the 1960s and it is another detective series focused in the North East of England. Still Open All Hours is a sequel to the classic 'Open All Hours' which sees many characters return, including Granville. It aired for a full series across December 2014 and January 2015 after a successful Christmas special in 2013. It focuses on events in a corner shop. Black Work starred Sheridan Smith as a policewoman who sets out to discover who murdered her husband, an undercover officer.

I enjoyed Black Work but it wasn't as gripping as I was hoping and the ending was a little anti-climatic. I put it down to it being an ITV drama.

I thought Black Work was really disappointing!

The Casual Vacancy was decent given the source material was pretty poor. I'm really looking forward to the BBC's adaptions of The Cuckoo's Calling. The 'Robert Galbraith' stories are far superior to The Casual Vacancy and I think the BBC will do the books justice! Apparently JK Rowling herself has written the script for The Cuckoo's Calling so it should be pretty good and true to the original story!

I agree that Black Work was disapointing but I actually really enjoyed The Casual Vacancy book! The adaptation was great too.

I've read The Cuckoo's Calling and absolutely LOVED it so I'm very excited to see that adaptation. I'm currently reading The Silkworm and I'm intrigued about how they're going to do adapt the novels, whether they do a series of each book, spend one episode on a book, do it Sherlock style of 90 mins each or do two-parters of each book.

16-20

16 | NE | Poldark - 7.60m | Highest = 8.75m (Ep. 1/8), Lowest = 6.84m (Ep. 7/8)
17 | RE | Last Tango in Halifax - 7.42m | Highest = 7.90m (Ep 6/6), Lowest = 7.02m (Ep. 2/6)
18 | 13 | The Apprentice - 7.18m | Highest = 7.93m (Ep. 1/12), Lowest = 6.27m (Ep. 12/12)
19 | RE | Doc Martin - 7.09m | Highest = 7.42m (Ep. 4/8), Lowest = 6.52m (Ep. 2/8)
20 | 19 | Eastenders - 7.06m | Highest = 11.57m (19th Feb), Lowest = 5.16m (4th Aug)

Eastenders manages to fall despite celebrating their 30th anniversary with a strong performing live week which finally revealed who actually killed Lucy Beale. The return of Kathy Beale and an impressive still-born storyline helped it to continue pulling in an impressive average though. The show follows residents of Albert Square in the East End of London. Doc Martin continued its bi-annual return with its seventh series in 2015. The show is set in a small village in Cornwall focusing on the sole GP of the town, who is incredibly grumpy and bad-mannered. The Apprentice is another long-running show that continues to be successful and the latest series saw a number of controversies, with one contestant quitting and another failing to make an appearance on 'You're Fired' after being heavily critical of the show's producers. It sees a number of contestants fighting for the chance to be a business partner to Lord Sugar. Last Tango in Halifax is a romantic drama focusing on the relationship between two older people who decide to start a relationship after being apart for 60 years. Poldark was first shown in 1975 but returned for a reboot in 2015, both are based on a series of novels. The show explores the return of a man who has returned to Cornwall after fighting in the army and sees him try to gain control of the Cornish mines. A shirtless Aidan Turner attracted a lot of media attention.

If Kathy's return was actually exciting and she hadn't settled back on the square within 2 weeks of meeting Ian for the first time in 9 years, I imagine the ratings would have been better for the Autumn period (in fact, September had the worst monthly average when it's usually July that gets hit badly - and that month performed as one of the best in 2015!).

July did well because, IIRC, that month was when the Lucy murder investigation ramped up and Max was convicted. September suffered from the constant clashes with Emmerdale and it seems the show never recovered until after Christmas.

11-15

11 | NE | Doctor Foster - 8.19m | Highest = 10.09m (Ep. 5/5), Lowest = 7.52m (Ep. 2/5)
12 | NE | The Great Comic Relief Bake Off - 8.07m | Highest = 8.39m (Ep. 2/4), Lowest = 7.75m (Ep. 1/4)
13 | NE | And Then There Were None - 7.98m | Highest = 8.61m (Ep. 1/3), Lowest = 7.66m (Ep. 2/3)
14 | 10 | Coronation Street - 7.79m | Highest = 9.59m (15th Jan), Lowest = 6.11m (20th Feb)
15 | 08 | The X Factor - 7.78m | Highest = 8.97m (Ep. 1/28), Lowest = 6.76m (Ep. 27/28)

The X Factor saw the departure of Mel B, Dermot O'Leary and Louis Walsh last year, marking it the first series without the latter being a judge. Hip, cool and down wid da kidz Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw were brought in to fill the vacant judging seats with Caroline Flack and Olly Murs getting a lot of Flack for their role as presenters. Due to the Rugby World Cup, there were a reduced amount of live shows last year. Coronation Street is still the nation's favourite soap after more than 55 years on air despite many claiming that the quality has reduced under its latest showrunner. The show is based in a fictional street in Manchester and focuses on the lives of the residents. And Then There Were None aired over three days during the Christmas period last year for BBC One. It was again created to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the birth of Agatha Christie, with the story that it is based on often being named as one of the authors best.
