Welcome one and all to a new quiz season, and the first of 2021! cheer.gif

Our last season champion was the wonderfully talented jimwatts, but will his crown be snatched from him in the weeks to come...

For our opening week, we will have a classic game of Pointless!

Here are the general rules;

* Submit an answer that you think nobody else will think to enter
* If you succeed, you score a pointless answer with 0 points
* If someone else provides the same answer as you, you each score 1 point
* Incorrect answers equal a points penalty based upon the number of participants
* The winner of each round will be determined by whoever scores the lowest pointed correctly guessed answer

PLEASE NOTE:

Loophole answers won't be allowed (the chart means the Official UK singles chart and not any other chart, artists must have scored hits as the performer rather than a songwriting/production credit).

Send your answers to me, awardinary, via PM by the deadline which is Sunday 14th February 2021 at 11:59pm.

The Questions;

    1. Name a #1 single from the 00’s (2000-2009) from a movie soundtrack

    2. Name an artist to have had a #1 album in this century without a Top 40 single in this century

    3. Name a Top 10 single with a country in it’s title

    4. Name a #1 single from a former TV soap star

    5. Name a Top 20 self-titled album by a British artist

    6. Name a boyband to have made 10 or more appearances in the main compilation series Now That’s What I Call Music! (Now 1-107)

    7. Name a Top 10 single that mentions the words “Honey” or “Chocolate” in the lyrics

    8. Name a dance song that has charted in the Top 40 so far in 2021

    9. Name a Top 10 single with an animated music video

    10. Name an artist who has recorded music with Elton John

    11. Name a Top 10 album with an item of food in it’s title

    12. Name a #1 single by a UK chart debutant
Any questions please ask!

I've entered but a couple of these did stump me. Hopefully some pointless answers amongst them!

"dance song" is so subjective - can definitely see some arguments here...

Plenty of valid choices for this question! tongue.gif

Well it’s such a short time frame to choose from, only 5 to 6 weeks have passed so far! But there is still plenty to choose from. tongue.gif

I think it’s more that it’s hard to pin down what counts as dance music. Just to take a random example you can quite happily dance to Dua’s Physical but I’m guessing that wouldn’t count if it had charted. On the other hand I’m guessing One Kiss would count thanks to Calvin’s part. If you push the boundaries of the definition you might be more likely to be pointless but also risk being marked wrong. tongue.gif

Great quiz though, thanks! biggrin.gif

perhaps by 'dance song' if you could confirm you mean EDM / a song that'd be discussed in Buzzjack's dance forum?

For numbers 3 and 10, does the country/item of food have to be a whole word? Or can it be part of another word?

Also I agree, we need a stricter definition of "dance song" - I think Dan's suggestion makes sense.

Hello! Good point, so dance is meant to mean the genre of dance music and I agree that the best way to define it is to go by a song that would have its own thread in the dance forum. This should make it clearer for any skeptics.

The country is self explanatory I think, a country name that isn’t shortened or generalised (e.g “American Dream” or “English Summer Rain”).

The food though can be a little more lenient (so words like “meat” or “fish” that describe various kinds of foods would be ok)

Also on countries, I will accept any form of England, United Kingdom or (Great) Britain for example.

I apologise for the confusion, I will draft up a simple explanation of the country rules for Question 3:

Please only answer with a song that contains the full name of a country (such as France, India, Japan etc) and DO NOT send an answer of a country that is a plural or adjective (such as British, Indian, Chinese, American, English etc).

ALSO

It is acceptable to receive an answer containing the words Britain, England, United Kingdom, United States and America. Again, I repeat these answers WILL be accepted! biggrin.gif

IN ADDITION

Someone asked me if it was acceptable for a country name to be contained within another word (such as “Pirana” containing the letters “Iran” within them) and the answer unsurprisingly is that is NOT an acceptable answer.

I do hope that has clarified it for ones, and I will send this explanation to any who have sent answers contrary to this definition up until now.

Q8 - Can the song be one that was a new entry in 2020 but was still in the chart in 2021 or is it just songs to enter the chart this year?

Q12 - Is this solo acts or can groups be included?

Also, to make it fair for early entrants, will any new entries in Friday's chart be ineligible for question 8?

The answer to all three of your questions is YES! biggrin.gif

Edit: I misread that last but as “eligible” so just to confirm, if a qualifying dance song enters the chart this coming Friday and is given as an answer to Question 8, it WILL be accepted.

Answers sent! Some of those took a lot of research, in particular searching the Official Chart website for random items of food and in doing so discovering that the word 'Automaton' contains the word 'tomato' laugh.gif

Ah I kept thinking researching wasn't allowed. Silly me.. I didn't give an answer to one question because it was quite hard just thinking about heehee.gif (I already know I'm wrong with self title question as well as it was just an assumption).

I'll use some research to help next time if I enter tongue.gif

I was so proud of my initial answer to Q3 (ghetto gospel) then I saw your clarification further down (good job I read that!)
