BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 1st August 2020, 08:47 PM

Joel Corry & MNEK should safely remain at #1 for a third week. Leading this week's releases are Billie Eilish's new single my future, and Sam Smith & Burna Boy with My Oasis, plus new tracks from Bastille/Graham Coxon, Disclosure/Fatoumata Diawara, McFly and The Vamps

Taylor Swift's folklore could spend another week at #1, although Dublin band Fontaines D.C.'s second album A Hero's Death may put up a fight. Other new releases include Alanis Morrissette's Such Pretty Forks in the Road, Creeper's Sex, Death & The Infinite Void and Max Richter's Voices

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored. Any chart requests between No. 41 to 100 will not be answered after Monday's update.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

The OCC might post something, but as has already been said this is a one-off for R1 and it’s been a huge success for them to have this weekend happy.gif

I'm expecting for this week:
cardigan ~22
exile ~31

The thing is it's hard to tell how well Fontaines will do as they've blown up so much since last year, it'll definitely be higher than Sports Team though laugh.gif I love both albums so I'll be glad to see both get to #1

Posted by: Cognizant 2nd August 2020, 06:30 PM

Genuinely quite sad that none of the Taylor tracks have stayed in the top-twenty. I like Cardigan but I love August a lot more (maybe that should have been the lead...)

Also for the life of me I don’t underhand why Watermelon Sugar has never been discounted to 59p? Doing so would net the song a lot more sales and help Harry get his second UK number one..

Big meh from me this evening :/

Posted by: Bjork 2nd August 2020, 06:31 PM

I'm positive Cardigan will be comfortably top 20 come Friday, maybe even top 15

Posted by: Bjork 2nd August 2020, 06:40 PM

Don't think Taylor's album is holding up well enough on streaming to be #1 again :/
think it will be Fontaines for certain and won't even be close

Posted by: Cognizant 2nd August 2020, 06:44 PM

Also Folklore has been increased to £10.99 (from £8.99 last week) on iTunes..

Bit odd

Posted by: Bré 2nd August 2020, 06:50 PM

Comparing the Spotify positions for Taylor's 3rd through 12th songs (the important ones for determining album streaming sales) with where Juice WRLD was at this stage in his second week (where he ended up selling 11.8k):

Taylor: 35, 43, 48, 52, 68, 69, 74, 75, 79, 82
Juice: 26, 35, 38, 43, 77, 80, 83, 89, 96, 101

Given that Taylor will have significantly higher pure sales than Juice and her streaming numbers are looking similar if not slightly better than Juice's (I think she is doing similarly to or better than Juice was at this stage on Apple as well) I would say she's looking like maybe selling 15k second week? If that's right Fontaines D.C. will need to more than double their first week sales from their last album to beat her. Not impossible (especially if I am overestimating Taylor) but I still think it's more likely than not that Taylor will hang on. Will probably be closer than I originally thought though.

The Official Charts Midweek Sales Flash is in, and Fontaines DC are off to a flyer in the albums chart.

The Dublin band's second album A Hero's Death has raced clear at No.1 with sales of 14,472, almost 10,000 ahead of nearest challenger Creeper, who are at No.2 with Sex, Death & The Infinite Void (5,030 sales).

Taylor Swift's reigning chart-topper Folklore drops down to No.3, selling 4,680 units, while there are new entries for Alanis Morissette's Such Pretty Forks In The Road (No.4, 3,968 sales), Psychedlic Furs' Made Of Rain (No.5, 2,973 sales) and Paul McCartney's reissued 1997 LP Flaming Pie (No.7, 2,770 sales).

Elsewhere, Billie Eilish has made an instant impact in the singles chart, with My Future (11,714 sales) straight in at No.4. The Top 2 are unchanged - Joel Corry ft. MNEK continuing at No.1 with Head & Heart (29,143 sales) and Savage Love by Jawsh 685 & Jason Derulo (20,926 sales) holding firm at No.2.

Harry Styles leaps 7-3 with Watermelon Sugar (12,857 sales) and Nathan Dawe ft. KSI's Lighter (11,682 sales) dips 4-5.

While it has been in the top 40 for about 6 weeks now, it seems album sales are so low now in general, that a few dozen sales can add a 10 place climb to an album's chart placement. I noted last week that there was only a difference of about 200 sales between #20 and #60 in the album charts. Crazy really for a population of 65 million!

Once again I ought to just not question RFC's insights on bands like this laugh.gif happy to see it though!

I do wonder what their second week drop will end up being though ('Dogrel' went 9-73 for reference, I obviously don't think this one is also going to fall as far as #73 given how much it is overperforming their first album's debut week but still wouldn't surprise me if this gives us the 1-out of top 40 run that we've nearly seen a couple of times this year with The Streets and particularly Sports Team).

Has this been heard on the radio?

They can’t even promote him let alone KATY PERRY

How can you want the abomination that is Lighters to overtake the summer sensation that is Watermelon Sugar?

Posted by: YTCentral 4th August 2020, 06:16 PM

Billie's position on Spotify + Apple Music + iTunes have dropped a bit but I think she'll still clinch Top 10...

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 4th August 2020, 06:41 PM

Ellie was lucky to release when she did! Hopefully she’ll somehow stay too 40 by end of the week but I can see her being somewhere between 41-45.

Is there anything that can save this era? Love I’m Given sounds like it could be quite big if pushed.

Great figures for Fontaines DC would be class if it could break 20k by Friday. Thought Taylor was gauranteed the no1 spot for 2 weeks.

#11 but likely to make it back in

Posted by: Bré 4th August 2020, 08:58 PM

Pop Smoke looking like he might make it to make it 5 straight weeks in the top 3 on the albums chart, that's quite amazing for a rap album. I'd guess Drake's 'Scorpion' (which also had 5 consecutive weeks in the top 3, 6 in total) is the last one to match that? Eminem's last 2 albums both only spent 4 weeks in the top 3, can't immediately think of any other rappers who even come close to the level of longevity Drake and Eminem get unless I'm forgetting someone obvious.

edit: was forgetting Stormzy but he only had 3 consecutive and 4 total weeks in the top 3 with 'Heavy Is The Head'. Also Post Malone whose last album spent 3 weeks in the top 3.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 4th August 2020, 10:54 PM

I think Fine Line could make a whole year top 10 with a peak of only #3. ohmy.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th August 2020, 10:59 PM

It wouldn't surprise me if Fine Line falls out of the top 10 as we move into Q4, or even before then if we have a busy week (it so nearly fell out a couple of weeks ago!), but its longevity has been SO impressive - I doubt anyone saw this coming, I know I didn't!

For comparison's sake, this is how it fares in comparison to the other 1D / solo albums:

Most Top 10 Weeks

33 Fine Line *
10 Take Me Home
09 FOUR
09 Made In the A.M.
07 Up All Night
06 Midnight Memories
03 Harry Styles
02 Flicker
02 Mind of Mine
01 Walls
01 Heartbreak Weather

Most Top 40 Weeks

83 Up All Night
50 Take Me Home *
33 Fine Line *
28 Midnight Memories
21 Made In the A.M. *
14 FOUR *
12 Harry Styles
09 Flicker
05 Mind of Mine
04 Heartbreak Weather
01 LP1
01 Walls

* still charting

Fine Line has spent longer in the top 10 than all 1D-related albums spent in the top 40 except the first two...! And over triple the previous highest tally for top 10 weeks.

Harry really has done great with Fine Line and seeing it against all the one direction releases showcases it more. Fine line still has a good few sales left in yet but it seems to be consistently selling about 5.5k every week since its release. Wouldn't be surprised to see a deluxe release later in the year.

It is a pretty annoyingly catchy song, I can definitely see why it's done so well. ('No Guidance' on the other hand did even better and I still don't understand what appeal that tedious pile of junk ever had...)

Were all the pre-order sales already added in in today's update? Seems there were only a couple thousand of them if so, so maybe her getting back the #1 still isn't quite a foregone conclusion. You're only judging in comparison to other albums of much more prominent artists from much more popular mainstream genres. Obviously it's not going to break the charts and get thousands of new fans out of nowhere every day. You don't know how many of those people discovered them with this release. Have you actually listened to the album before making a claim that "no one outside of their fanbase will be buying it"?

Posted by: Steve201 6th August 2020, 12:54 PM

😂 the comparison between Fontaines DC and Taylor Swift is hilarious. The former have only broken onto radio playlists in the last year while Taylor is an established artist with many fans worldwide. Fontaines DC get playlisted by 6 Music and Radio 1 (C-List) for their current single....

That's one of the most pathetic and desperate things I've ever seen when it comes to the charts. Missing out on one week, when she's bound to have got it next week and probably the rest of the month, would mean nothing to EMI and Taylor Swift but would mean the world to an upcoming band that may never get a similar chance. Just sheer spite and manipulation with basically placing the album where they want with the pre-orders.

Posted by: Cognizant 6th August 2020, 01:24 PM

I think there situation is different in UK-US cos in the US all the pre-orders for CDs, vinyls, cassettes from her website came with a download
so they already counted for week 1 even if shipped later
but in the Uk, chart rules are different and only count when shipped, so I guess they're counting now

Sports Team themselves were a lot more involved than Fontaines were IIRC, all they’ve done is retweet the Clash article and haven’t mentioned the price reduction on any of their socials.

Yeah Sports Team are gloriously shameless laugh.gif the fact Fontaines are of course not from the UK probably plays a part as well

Have Taylor's physicals not been added yet then?

Good to see Creeper should be able to stay top 5

Posted by: omrimayo 6th August 2020, 02:53 PM

With 5K lead it's not like she's gonna get number 1 anyway...

Posted by: Lomadz 6th August 2020, 02:55 PM

CDs have not been added yet...surely.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th August 2020, 02:58 PM

With the biggest jump being from Tuesday to Wednesday, I think they might have already been added?

Posted by: JosephStyles 6th August 2020, 02:59 PM

2.3k physicals are showing for Taylor, whether that's all of them or not remains to be seen.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th August 2020, 03:01 PM

oops

Posted by: Lomadz 6th August 2020, 03:03 PM

Still...not a bad second week for her regardless. Hopefully No1 next week.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th August 2020, 03:05 PM

It'll be interesting to see how Glass Animals do next week - they've grown quite a lot since their last album in 2016!

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 6th August 2020, 03:05 PM

A consistent 1k a day for Fontaines. Hopefully with a bit extra publicity, reduced download price and the little addition for catching up any missing data can get to 19k overall.

I’ve never really been able to get into any of theirs so have no opinion about what this might do, but I did notice their tour is in the same type of venues as the likes of DMA’s and Fontaines so will have a similar reach and may end up with sales somewhere between the two?

Interview with Grian of Fontaines about the chart battle

QUOTE
‘It was sort of like a weird sense of being flattered because the idea that a massive corporation is afraid of losing face to a group of lads from Dublin is hilarious to me. ‘I mean it’s nothing to do with Taylor, obviously, you know, she has absolutely nothing to do with it. I actually like Taylor Swift, but it’s just the industry around her, the huge corporation around her.

‘It’s just a classic case of people who have it all but contentment, you know?’ While fans of the group have taken issue with the change in release date from Taylor’s camp, Grian hasn’t been looking at the reaction ‘for my own mental health’.

‘I’m going to be having a barbecue with my friends and my fiance and my managers,’ he told us, ‘and we’re going to have a laugh and we’re going to have fun. No matter what happens.’

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 6th August 2020, 03:13 PM

Ive been charged for my Taylor order so I’ll likely get it tomorrow.

I don’t think all her physicals have been added though I expected her physical sales to be similar to if not more than her download sales last week.

Argh Mood Swings has overtaken the songs on ACR, which means that Rain on Me won't be top 20. Hope it can be there next week if Dinner Guest goes ACR.

Did 9.3k first week to open at #6. You can find sales figures for the top 10 albums of each week going back to 2014 (and top 3 / top 5 back to 2005) archived in http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=160979.

Glass Animals' last album only got to #23, I expect they should be able to go at least top 10 if not top 5 this time around but not expecting them to be a #1 contender. What do I know tho ~

Ah cheers for that - Glass Animals is a tough one given it's been 4 years since their last album (especially with Fontaines showing how much they've grown in 1 laugh.gif)

Posted by: SevenSeize 6th August 2020, 05:47 PM

i wouldn't have expected Glass Animals to reach the top 10 personally, but idk how much a fanbase they have here so laugh.gif

haven't seen any buzz about Glass Animals
especially compared to Fontaines, which everyone was talking about (in indie circles)

GA do get significantly more streams and have more followers than Fontaines, but their fanbase is also more international. I'd be surprised if they don't at least go top 10 here

And they're also doing Ally Pally (same as Fontaines and bigger than most singles chart acts like Mabel!) on their next tour, that's 10,400 people

Posted by: Bré 6th August 2020, 06:28 PM

Glass Animals' streams obviously aren't as UK based as Fontaines D.C. but worth noting they did have a single make the top 200 on UK Spotify a few weeks ago. (Only for one day and very low down but that is not nothing as an achievement for an 'indie' act (although the song is pretty much a straight up pop song lol)).

In Ireland this week the battle for the #1 is between Fontaines and the aptly named The Coronas laugh.gif

The Coronas seem to be another 'Picture This' as in they sell out arenas there but haven't made a dent here!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 6th August 2020, 06:44 PM

The Coronas have been very successful in Ireland for years now but never made any impact in the UK, The Coronas have some really great music and i would prefer them to Picture House who i also like.

It helps that Fontaines have the 6 Music crowd behind them who are generally keen on purchasing physicals - Glass Animals’ have a younger and more streaming-oriented fanbase by large.

Why does she 'deserve' an album with more than a week at the top? A band like Fontaines DC gettin gto number one could be career changing in terms of radio support for future releases and profile.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th August 2020, 10:53 PM

Especially as she'd certainly have the #1 the week after

Posted by: JosephStyles 6th August 2020, 10:54 PM

folklore is one of the most acclaimed albums of the year, certainly Taylor's most acclaimed, so it being her first album to spend a 2nd week at the top would be amazing. Not saying it wouldn't be amazing for Fontaines too but I think there are different ways to look at it, they're not entitled to the #1 just because Taylor's been there already after all!

Posted by: Steve201 6th August 2020, 10:56 PM

And no one said they were just like Taylor isn't entitled to multiple weeks at the top. It would mean ALOT more to a small upcoming indie band.

Of course she isn't, which makes this a fair battle, some posters in here seem very pressed at Taylor daring to want another week at #1... tongue.gif

Posted by: Steve201 6th August 2020, 11:00 PM

I would argue the opposite the obvious pro Fontaines posters are quite calm and posting facts with their view points whereas the pro Taylor posters are (as per usual) being over dramatic and Stan like at the thought Taylor might miss out on a second week. I mean the first few pages had posts playing down any chance of a second week and the narrative changes as the week developed.

It's all a bit of fun to me anyway as I was LOL at the comments.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th August 2020, 11:03 PM

I'd agree with you there on twitter Steve, but I wouldn't say there's been any over dramatic reactions here on either side

Posted by: JosephStyles 6th August 2020, 11:04 PM

Beyond one or two posters I think everyone's been quite calm - nobody actually expected Taylor to be in contention at all after the initial mids as physicals weren't expected until next week, so naturally people have been more interested in whether she'll overtake in the past two days (and, barring a last-minute sales report from her webstore, she won't overtake). If Fontaines get the #1, then good on them, I've got no opinion as I've never heard one of their songs but it's an impressive achievement nonetheless. #2 would also be amazing though, it's not the end of the world if the #1 did get nabbed by Taylor at the last second.

As far as Taylor "deserving" the #1 goes, well I think we all think that about albums we love. I could name loads that I think "deserve" #1 after all, it's not a comment worth overthinking imo
