Towards The Sun | 4.942 Highest Scores: 11: (Mike Sugafan), Lowest Scores: 0: (Adelita, Bjork) Now let's kick things off with our first set of results & in last place is one of Rihanna's many, many collaborations Nothing Is Promised, which is a song by American producer Mike Will Made It & released in June 2016 as the lead single from his debut studio album Ransom 2. The song was actually recorded way back in 2014 when Rihanna released a snippet of it on her official instagram account, leaving many to assume that it would feature on her then upcoming 8th studio album, but nothing came of it until July 2015 when Mike Will Made It posted a 15-second video clip featuring a snippet of Rihanna singing; in June of the following year he released their collaboration as the lead single from his album. The song's thick beats goes perfectly with Rihanna's nonchalant vocal delivery & the production is top notch, but the song is rather repetitive & given the amount of songs she released in 2016 alone, this got lost in the shuffle & doubt many will remember it after the year was out. At #64 is Birthday Cake, a song that almost finsihed last in this rate, but managed a couple of higher/mid scores towards the end, which caused it rise a little bit. The song originally featured on her 6th studio album Talk That Talk as an interlude & wasn't considered for inclusion due to it's 1:18 length, but after it's early leak & high level of fan interest, it finally got included upon the album's release. In 2012 the song got remixed with vocals by Chris Brown, as a full length version of the track & was sent to US radio as the album's 4th single in March 2012 & would become quite successful by reaching a #24 peak, becoming the 4th top 40 hit from that album. At first it was rumoured that Christina Aguilera would feature on the remix version of the track after Rihanna posted a message on Twitter saying that she wanted someone "Dirrrty" on the re-recording, a supposed reference to Aguilera's 2002 song "Dirrty". However, the singer later tweeted that she wanted a male vocalist, which would later turn out to be Chris Brown which caused shock waves, given their relationship history. Yes this song's controversial paring stinks of a mere publicity stunt, yet the song didn't really hang around for that long (due to Chris Brown's fading sales), for anyone to remember it or have a lasting impact on the music industry. Even in its orginal form it wasn't anything special, & its remix is just a banal attempt at shock value, noy really offensive, it's just something that happened briefly, then forgotten about rather quickly. At #63 is Selfish, a song by American rapper Future featuring Rihanna & released in February 2017 as the lead single from his 6th studio album Hndrxx. The song draws influences from the R&B & Pop music genres with Future's voice set to auto-tune. Upon releease the song was a minor success with a top 20 peak in New Zealand, as well as top 40 peaks in several countries including Canada, France, Australia, USA & Hungary. This is an okay slow burner with Future's decent falsetto vocals coming behind Rihanna's preppy snare claps & synthetic yelps. But this isn't anywhere near as great or immediate as some of her previous collaborations, however it's fine nonetheless. At #62 is Rihanna's other Future collaboration Loveeeeee Song, released in March 2013 as the 4th American single from her 7th studio album Unapologetic. The song is a sci-fi slow R&B song, that features lyrics the revolve around themes of love and affection that hear Rihanna singing in an accent. Upon release the song recieved general critical acclaim & became a modest success on the US Billboard charts by reaching a #55 peak. After listening to this again, I do find this rather underrated as this is a rather sleek slow jam with Future's signature vocal warbles mixed with Rihanna's confident tones as she yearns for affection, yet at the same time reminding her lover that she's not a trophy & will move on to the next suitor. Yet maybe its the song's stupid title that may have been a bit off putting to some people (seriously why all the e's). Maybe if this got a video & a proper push, then it could have stood a chance & been better remembered. The last of this bunch in at #61 is Towards The Sun, released in February 2015 as the lead single from the soundtrack to the movie Home. The song was set to play on mainstream radio, but was cancelled (which is probably why it didn't chart in the USA). The song was written and produced by Tiago Carvalho and Gary Go, with additional writing by Rihanna. Upon release the song recieved postive reviews & became a moderate success by reaching a top 40 peak in France, as well as lower peaks in Spain, Slovakia & UK. As pop anthems go this isn't bad, witha well crafted soundscape that's perfectly suited for any digital animatied movie. Rihanna hits those high notes rather well, yet also feels emotionally removed from the real Rihanna, as this reeks of oh well I'm starring in the movie, may as well sing the song as well. Definiately not of the most essential songs in her discography, its one of those ones that only die-hard Rihanna fans would seek out. I liked the interlude of Birthday Cake back in 2011 and wished it was a full song. When the remix dropped I was severely disappointed. It could’ve been so much better with someone else.

Jump | 5.346 Highest Scores: 8: (PAJ, Nick F1), lLowest Scores: 1: (Adelita) In this bunch we lose a few more quite recent Rihanna numbers & the first to drop in this bunch at #60 is Lemon, a song by American band N.E.R.D. & was released in November 2017 as the lead single from their 5th studio album No One Ever Really Dies. There were several alternate versions of this song produced, including a version without the Rihanna feature (which sees Pharrell rapping a similar verse), a radio edit, and an edited version submitted to streaming services that omits Pharrell's first verse & there was even a remix version featuring Drake which was released in March 2018. The song even features a sample of former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Arlen Specter in the track saying the "Wait a Minute" line. Upon release the song was a moderate hit by reaching top 40 peaks in UK, Canada & USA, as well as top 50 peaks in Australia & France. Rihanna really helps this song shine with her nimble & effortless rapping, which makes the rest of the song barely matters as there's not much of a song to enjoy, beyond its decent production with its synth bleeps & vocal samples, but other than that its kind of just there, in one ear out the other. At #59 is one of Rihanna's earliest efforts We Ride, released in August 2006 as the 3rd single from her 2nd studio album A Girl Like Me & was written by Makeba Riddick, Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen, with production helmed by Stargate. The song was chosen by Rihanna due to it being the most downloaded album track on ITunes after the first 2 singles, as well as it having generally good feedback. Upon release the song wasn't quite as successful as the album's previous singles, but still managed some moderate success by hitting top 10 peaks in Finland & New Zealand, as well as top 40 peaks in several countries such as UK, Ireland, Australia, France, & Belgium. However in the USA it failed to crack the top 100, peaking at #107 on the Bubbling Under Chart, but did manage to top the Dance charts. This probably stands as one of her most forgotten releases from her early days & its not hard to see why as despite a nice laidback groove, its kinda forgettable & doesn't quite stand out due to its very dated sound. However there are some nice delicate guitar strings & swooning percussions on display here & looking back now at the artist Rihanna has become, this seems like an odditity when compared to her other stellar hits. At #58 is Sledgehammer, released in June 2016 to promote the 'Star Trek: Beyond" movie, but wasn't indluded on the soundtrack. The song was written collaboratively by Rihanna, Sia Furler and Jesse Shatkin. Upon release the song recieved generally positive reviews & made minor commercial impact by reaching a top 40 peak in Belgium as well as making charting in the lower regions in France, Australia, UK & Canada. This stands as Rihanna's least successful power-piano ballad, tacked onto a Sci-Fi movie & depsite containing many of the same elements that have garnered her amazing results in the past with compelling vocals, moody lyrics & magnetic building tension, this sadly doesn't quite work with Rihanna feeling rather distant from the importance of the song's lyrics,. It all feels rather disconnected & way too formulaic. There was a reason why this was quickly forgotten about, hell even I totally forgot about it, an hour after it was released & that's not a good sign. At #57 is Rihanna's most recent effort Believe It, a song by Canadian singer PartyNextDoor & was released in March 2020 as the 4th single from his 3rd studio album Partymoblie & marks Rihanna's first appearance on a song in 3 years who finished her vocals on the track in the week of the album's release. Upon release the song performed decently by hitting top 20 peaks in UK, New Zealand & Ireland, as well as top 40 peaks in 10 other countries. While we wait patiently for new Rihanna material, this an okay stop gap & fairly simple when compared to some of her previous collaborations, but its still okay with some nice modulated vocal samples interwoven with a fleeting guitar riff to supplement the unwavering beat. The bassline really gives the track a relaxed feel-good energy vibe to the whole things & of course Rihanna's appearance on the chorus really helps lift the whole thing slightly above generic as she uses the lower potion of her vocal range with a slight rasp in her delivery, producing a tension free sound. On the whole its way too simple to be ranked up there with some of her previous work, but its still a fun time nonetheless. At #56 is Jump, released in January 2014 as the 7th & final overall single from her 7th studio album Unapologetic for the Oceania market where it attained commercial success by reaching a top 5 peak in Australia, as well as a top 10 peak in New Zealand. The song did manage to chart in the lower regions of France & UK due to strong digital downloads upon the album's release. The song was written by Kevin Cossom, M. B. Williams, Stargate and Chase & Status, with production done by the latter two and Kuk Harrell, as well as sampling the lyrics of Ginuwine's 1996 single 'Pony'. This was a firm standout upon the album's release & could have easily been a smash if given a full worldwide push as an earlier single maybe, Rihanna explores the dub-step genre, which tends to get very mixed results at best & yes its very much dated now, but the sexy slow burning chorus, before diving into the breakdown, gives this a rather fun bad-ass vibe to it. The song was originally intended to be a duet with Janet Jackson for her Discipline album, but label problems interfered, then later Adam Levine asked Rihanna to add vocals to the remix version of the track & she accepted. Upon release the song recieved a mixed responce by critics & acheived moderate success on the charts worldwide with top 20 peaks in Australia, Netherlands, Canada & Ireland, as well as top 40 peaks in New Zealand, UK & Denmark. In the USA it managed to reach a #51 peak & would later garner a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals at the 2009 Grammy Awards, marking the first nomination in the category for both artists. The song is very MEH where despite Rihanna's best efforts with her silky tones, they just clash horribly with Adam Levine's shrill falsetto & there just isn't much chemistry between both artists. Although there are some fun jagged synths & buzzing guitars added into the mix, but they're not enough to save this rather lacklustre effort. At #54 is Break It Off, released in November 2006 as the 4th and final single from her 2nd studio album A Girl Like Me & features guest vocals from Sean Paul. Upon release the song garnered a postive critical responce & was released mainly in the USA where it became a success by reaching a #9 peak, despite having no music video, as well as reaching a top 40 peak in Canada. Elsewhere it was only given a limited release through digital downloads via iTunes in various countries around the world. This is a fun little number that would have probably been a far better choice for a worldwide release than 'We Ride' with its pretty straightforward dancehall beats that's built on Jamaican producer Don Corleone’s “High Altitude” riddim, which really gives this a fun booty shaking energy. Even the chemisty between both artists works well on this track, & okay both have done far better work since, but this was a fun little time capsule. At #53 is Rockstar 101, released in May 2010 as the 5th single from her 4th studio album Rated R & features Gun N' Roses band member Slash on the guitar work. This marks the first time Rihanna has incorporated grunge-crunk & rock into her sound & upon released the song recieved mixed reviews & was only given a limited release in the USA & Australia where it attained minor success by reaching #64 & #24 peaks in each country respectively. This definately wasn't taken very seriously at the time, as this was a lot to take in for fans at the time, especially as this was still pretty early in her career. However in retrospect she does show early signs of indifferent swagger, which she pulls off rather well & her pent up agressive vocals does blend with the grungey hip-hop production with varying degrees of success. Even at this early stage she wasn't afraid to take risks & shows that she can tackle other genres of music. At #52 is Loyalty, a song by American rapper Kendrick Lamar with Rihanna on backing vocals. Released in April 2017 as the 2nd single from his 4th studio album Damn. Upon release the song recieved rave critcial reviews & became a success on various charts worldwide by reaching top 20 peaks in Canada, USA, New Zealand, Ireland & New Zealand, as well as top 40 peaks in 6 other countries & would go onto win the Grammy for 'Best Rap/Sung Performance'. This dense yet shimmering sample-packed track provides the perfect vechicle for both artists with their unique vocals blending together beautifully on the smooth mid-tempo beats. This really deserved more success than it got, a good solid number. At #51 is Right Now, released in May 2013 as the 5th overall single from her 7th studio album Unapologetic & features French DJ David Guetta, & would mark they're 2nd collaboration together. Rihanna co-wrote the song with R&B singers Ne-Yo and The-Dream, while their longtime collaborators, Norwegian production duo StarGate, co-produced the track alongside Guetta and his own longtime collaborators Nicky Romero and Giorgio Tuinfort. Upon release critics were divided on the song & it became a moderate success worldwide by hitting top 40 peaks in Austria, Japan, Sweden, Netherlands, France, Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, UK & Australia. It's limited success was probably due to it recieving no music video, no televised performances & very liimited promotion. However it was used as the promo musical backdrop for the NBA playoffs & used by lager company Budweiser as part of their global "Made For Music" campaign co-starring Jay-Z. I remember this being pretty much maligned upon release, & yeah sure it isn't anything memorable & quite generic, but I never thought it was that bad. There are some fun frantic EDM beats & churning basslines that keeps the track moving at a brisk pace & yeah its another one of those cases where if it had better promo, then it may have stood a better chance & not only is it very paint by numbers, it never really felt like it was an actual single either. On the whole it's fine, but not a lost Rihanna classic by a long stretch. |
