BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 23rd September 2018, 11:57 AM

Calvin Harris & Sam Smith look for a 4th week at #1 on the singles chart. Big new entries to come from Rita Ora with her album(!)'s lead single Let You Love Me and the posthumous track from Lil Peep & XXXTENTACION - Falling Down, plus comeback singles from Mumford & Sons and Avril Lavigne, and a new French Montana/Drake collab

Eminem may retain the #1 album among a sea of new releases - Christine And The Queens follows up her debut success with Chris, Slash teams up with Myles Kennedy again on Living The Dream and Josh Groban returns with Bridges. There's new albums from Suede, Joe Bonamassa, Prince, Brockhampton, Villagers and more. Wolf Alice's Mercury Prize-winning album Visions Of A Life should make a return this week too

Interesting to see where Suede lands with their new album. I'm thinking top 5

Interesting to see where Suede lands with their new album. I'm thinking top 5

Really hope so but their last 3 Studio Albums have landed outside the Top 5 and it is a competitive week this week so will be a challenge. In addition to Christine and the Queens think Josh Groban should finish in Top 5 (he is following up a chart-topper).

Posted by: Bjork 23rd September 2018, 04:26 PM

just checked and there last 2 Suede albums since their comeback did 10K and 12K respectively in week 1, so enough for top 10 but probably between 6-10
by comparison, the last Josh Groan did 20K to debut at 1, no clue how he's so popular

Posted by: Bré 23rd September 2018, 04:47 PM

I have no memory at all of Josh Groban's last album hitting #1. (Weird because I remember the previous album making the top 10 but completely forgot he even had another album since then, must have been a week where I wasn't paying much attention to the albums chart).

Posted by: Jdw77 23rd September 2018, 04:59 PM

Anyone could have the number one album this week although I’d say Eminem will probably stay at #1.

Posted by: SKOB 23rd September 2018, 05:31 PM

I'm saying it's either Chris or Eminem

Posted by: Mart!n 23rd September 2018, 06:29 PM

Josh Groban was on Jonathan Ross show last night, probably end up top 5. My guess Eminem will bag another week at #1 in the albums chart, and Calvin & Sam in the singles, could be the last week for them, if Silk City make it next week, it needs a bit of a kick though, currently #5 on spotify. Hopefully Kanye West will just go away, its horrendous.

Posted by: ___∆___ 24th September 2018, 11:26 AM

Hopefully Kylie’s KM94 album is at least Top 50 in today’s update following on from its vinyl release

Posted by: SmileyKylie 24th September 2018, 12:53 PM

Am hoping Kylie's Golden sneaks a top 40 spot in today's update

Posted by: Becki 24th September 2018, 01:40 PM

I hope Rita is going to debut well this week. If not then hopefully it'll be a riser like Anywhere was.

Sir Joe BonaSMASHA gracing the UK chart again with his presence at #6 too *_* :upsidedownpulsatingcheeseblock:

How far is Suede from Eminem?

Posted by: danG 24th September 2018, 04:40 PM

Don't know, all we have is the article. Which says less than 2k separates the entire top 4 so it must be very close. I reckon Eminem has this week's #1.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 24th September 2018, 04:46 PM

That's a shame, could Cher or Rod Stewart knock him off next week?

If not, Twenty One Pilots definitely will the week after.

nice for Mumfords and not that bad for Avril

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 24th September 2018, 04:56 PM

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 24th September 2018, 04:58 PM

Also I'm surprised If Love is the Law has entered for Noel, when they showed a performance of Holy Mountain.

Great to see Mumford in the Top 30. Would be great to see them just hang on in by Friday but unlikely.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 24th September 2018, 05:10 PM

Kylie Minogue 2 albums top 40

KM94 at 27
Golden at 35

KM94 will drop out of top 40 probably as limited edition so not enough copies probably

Golden may well stay top 40 as Tour continues

BROCKHAMPTON didn't even come close to the top 100 with their previous albums (afaia), don't mistake them having a small following on here for there being some great expectation that this album would do well xx (I'm thrilled to see them as high as #23 atm, really hoping they can hold onto a place in the top 40 but it is going to be massively frontloaded so I'm not holding my breath yet).

Yayyy for Christine currently having the #1 as well, and...

With the high streaming figures on the opening day I really am surprised at how low they are! Black Honey haven't had any top 100 appearances either and I really didn't think they would shift more copies this weekend! Delighted for them though, they're a decent band (from the one song I am familiar with on that album).

I mean they probably do, but making a wild generalisation I'd presume Black Honey's fanbase are more the type of people who would actually buy albums. BROCKHAMPTON's decent first day streams are likely the only reason it's even in the top 40 considering it has no physical release yet and it peaked at ~#18 on iTunes (but both downloads and streams have dropped off hard after the first day anyway hence why I'm not celebrating them being top 40 yet laugh.gif)

I'm more interested to see how 'iridescence' does in the USA, as their last album got to #15 there (although iirc that was helped out by some kind of bundle sales).

Just a classic case of big fanbase streams on day 1 with a big drop off the next day. BROCKHAMPTON aren't exactly all that commercial so don't have the casual Spotify audience keeping their album tracks in the chart like with Drake/Eminem/Travis Scott etc.

Posted by: Bré 24th September 2018, 05:50 PM

I mean they never even had one song in the top 200 for a single day prior to this album release to be fair, so even having a bunch in there for a day before vanishing was a huge improvement for them laugh.gif album track streams peak on the first day for pretty much all artists as it's about the only day they'll get any significant number of 'curiosity streams' from people who aren't already fans. And, taking off my stan goggles to be realistic for a moment, this album probably isn't likely to appeal much beyond the existing fanbase as it's much more experimental than their previous stuff, so it probably isn't retaining many of the people who were checking them out for the first time out of curiosity kink.gif

It would be interesting to see where the songs fell to though, all we know is that they fell out of the top 200. (Unless there is some kind of extended Spotify chart somewhere that I don't know about?)

I guess curiosity streams would have to be the one of the key explaining factors.

We can't really tell what happened in the UK Spotify so I would just have a look at how the response was elsewhere. In the US chart they had 13 songs in the top 150 (highest being #52) and that dropped to just 4 in the top 200 (highest #121) the following day, to only 2 that remain there now (at #163 and #182).

Posted by: SLlewellyn 24th September 2018, 06:16 PM

Chip as low as #18 in the first update is disappointing to see, particularly as his last - less commercial - album was a T10; and the genre has only grown in popularity since. Bit annoyed that the new single with Not3s is looking to chart too, when “Darth Vader”, nor “My Girl” hit the T100 - ah well.

Posted by: pippa 24th September 2018, 06:33 PM

Suede will likely drop through the week but are safe for Top 10, ideally they will retain a Top 5 entry.

It would be interesting to see where the songs fell to though, all we know is that they fell out of the top 200. (Unless there is some kind of extended Spotify chart somewhere that I don't know about?)

The album is hottest record on Annie Mac tonight - have a feeling they could be pushed into the Sound if 2019 hype over the coming months until January. Incidentally off topic but Lana Del Reys new single is Annie Record of the week all week!

Intrigued to see whether the Christine/Suede figures are a typo or whether they're really tied.

Posted by: liamk97 24th September 2018, 07:04 PM

The OCC say that Christine and the Queens have a lead of less than 1k. I'm guessing the Suede figure is correct and Christine is on 9k.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 24th September 2018, 07:26 PM

I really hope that 'Happier' can go #1 at some point!

Ah thanks Liam. That could be better I guess but I'm not totally disappointed given the hype seemed to disappear once Girlfriend had been released.

I know it's only the beginning of the week admittedly, but those are dreadful album sales for just three days. Regardless, the Christine and the Queens album is brilliant and I hope it can hang on.

I was hoping they would clear 20k for the week. I guess that could still happen once we find out how much it's selling daily, but you're right in that any hype from 'Girlfriend' wasn't really sustained.

Yeh 5 Dollars is very mass market orientated but not very good imo compared to all her other releases!

Jools Holland is back on Saturday nights on BBC2 this weekend, there isn't any guest list yet, I wonder if she has a spot on the show.

Actually back on tomorrow night and she's not on this week. Jess Glynne is though kink.gif

Jools Holland is back on Saturday nights on BBC2 this weekend, there isn't any guest list yet, I wonder if she has a spot on the show.

Joining Jools on the first show of the series are five artists, all making their own debuts on the show. From London, Jess Glynne, who this year became the first British female solo artist to have seven number one singles in the UK. She performs tracks from her upcoming second album Always in Between, which is the follow-up to her massive selling 2015 debut I Cry When I Laugh.

From Bristol, blistering intelligent punk from five-piece Idles, whose social commentary and sparky live performances have earned them rave reviews and a top five slot for their second LP Joy As An Act of Resistance. Back together since their last record 16 years ago, synthpop duo and stars of the 1980s charts Soft Cell. Singer Marc Almond and producer Dave Ball perform on the show in the week of their farewell concert at the O2 Arena and perform a new track as well as a classic or two from their haul of top 10 hits.

Making her TV debut on the show is Brooklyn-based 19-year-old songstress Mikaela Straus, AKA King Princess. The first signing to Mark Ronson's new Zelig label, one of the tracks she performs is 1950, which has been described as one of this year's political anthems and a beautiful homage to the LGBTQ+ community.

Completing the line-up is the prolific and gifted songwriter, and one of the great storytellers, Ralph McTell, who is now celebrating more than 50 years on the road. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, Ralph made his debut in 1968 with the album Eight Frames a Second, and in 1974 his timeless track Streets of London earned him an Ivor Novello Award. He performs his track West 4th & Jones Street, which is based on the iconic cover of Bob Dylan's Freewheelin'.

Other artists set to perform during the series include Muse, Jungle, Laurel, Interpol, Sigrid, Joe Bonamassa, Neneh Cherry and Paul Weller.

also thought Christine would do at least 20K but seems it will fall short, seems to be again kamikaze-TGS for the top 2

Music Week have corrected the sales for Christine and given a sales-breakdown:

QUOTE
Chris (Because) crept ahead of Suede’s The Blue Hour (Rhino) in yesterday’s sales flashes by 9,075 copies to 8,139, although the album also faces strong competition from Eminem’s stayer Kamikaze (Interscope) in the days ahead. Chris has sold 6,033 physical units, 2,514 downloads and has racked up 528 sales equivalent streams to date, according to the OCC.

Music Week have corrected the sales for Christine and given a sales-breakdown:

It’s a shame her streams aren’t great. Probably not helped by fans listening to all 24 songs, with only the top 12 being included for the sales units.

The album is rather hit and miss for me, but it’s good stuff is really good. Loving 5 Dollars, so would be great to see that at least chart in the top 100.

Posted by: pippa 25th September 2018, 07:30 PM

I expected higher opening sales for Christine and the Queens, it is likely to miss the Top 2 now and with disappointing sales.

Wouldn't that depend on whether the label have registered the French version as variants of the English ones (or vice-versa)?

Vice-versa. They just created English versions to impact the international market like they did for the 1st album.
Initially, Tilted was a French song called Christine.
They know that songs in total French had no chance to chart outside France, Belgium and Switzerland.

Looks like the Mumfords will hold onto top 40!

Where is TOOTIME?

Posted by: smidsy101 26th September 2018, 05:53 PM

I thought the Prince album would do better than this, given that it's his first posthumous release. I can see Josh Groban overtaking Slash and maybe Suede too to hit #4. Christine will likely end on 13-14k then, not awful but not what most were expecting.

Posted by: coi 26th September 2018, 05:56 PM

Hope Lil Peep can keep that last slot in the top ten! And nice to see Mumford & Sons holding on, hope they make it into the top 40 at the end of the week!

Should hopefully be safe to be top 40 if not top 30 then ohmy.gif Not sure how that's even happened, maybe the addition of missing streaming data or something but I definitely thought it'd fall over the week regardless. Black Honey who tongue.gif

Also hoping Mumford & Sons should be secure for a top 40 debut now.

didn't know Brockhampton were that big in the US

NEW RELEASES: A FRESH CHART BATTLE?

Data is notably scarce at present, but depending which way the winds blow we may witness a chart battle between Warner Bros. crooner Josh Groban and RCA's new-school lad band Brockhampton.

A variety of factors could shift the balance between now and when our chart closes on Friday, so stay tuned.

Heavily aided by merch bundles (as with seemingly half of all major album releases of late) to be fair but still a huge improvement on their other albums (the first one didn't chart at all and the next two got to #57 and #15 respectively). *.*
