Friday night and the lights are low, and before the weekend comes it's time for a BLAST from the PAST. Get ready because this first one is a #properbanger. Where ma dance crew @t? bounce.gif

THE YEAR: 2004
THE GENRE: electro-dancepop
THE ARTIST: Michael Gray
THE SONG: The Weekend
THE UK CHART RUN: {7}-13-17-22-25-26-32-31-26-29-42-54-72-73R(2)->14

THE VIDEO:

It's nearly 10 years old now which makes me feel old as this was a big childhood favourite for me. It's just a great tune about something we do every week; look forward to the weekend! Its simplicity works well here, with the production being brilliantly done. The synth that sounds remotely like a beeping noise in particular is #lushhh. It would work well as an instrumental actually but the vocal elevates it even further, making it the feel-good ANTHEM that it is.

The next Friday flashback will appear in this thread next Friday where we'll revisit another BIG DANCE ANTHEM from at least 5 years ago. biggrin.gif

I love this, just the type of early 2000's dance I love!

a bit slay tbh

10 years!!!!!!!! God that's depressing!!

Loved this at the time but I'm a bit bored of it now though still sounds great on a night out!!

Posted by: BillyH 4th October 2014, 01:57 AM

I listened to this a ton back when I was sixteen (jesus christ it's a decade old?! Feeling the pain), but only really in absense of much else dancewise in late 2004 that I thought was much good - the genre had fallen so much out of the charts that year that I started to feel a bit embarrassed even liking stuff like this. Having barely played it in the nine years since it's a rather wonderful nostalgia listen now.

Video, sadly, is an early one in the long depressing run of "Just film some models in their underwear for three minutes to get us some TV airplay/DVD single sales for the teenage lads" nonsense that lasted the best part of four bloody years, until thankfully dance videos with imagination started creeping back in. Even back then it seemed desperate to me, like they were worried no one would like the song without tons of female bodies thrust into your face.

THE YEAR: 2000
THE GENRE: progressive trance
THE ARTIST: Sasha & Emerson
THE SONG: Scorchio
THE UK CHART RUN: {23}-35-52->3

THE VIDEO:

Well there are so many great trance tracks to choose from really, but in the end this one gets chosen simply because it hasn't got enough recognition for the tune that it is. It's probably one that doesn't have cross-appeal to non-dance fans but if you're a fan of the late 90s/early 00s trance era you will love this. It's very different to other trance tracks at the time in that it is quite subtle but it still packs the energy. I've linked to the radio edit but the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WdrvedKpMY&spfreload=10%20Message%3A%20JSON%20Parse%20error%3A%20Unexpected%20EOF%20(url%3A%20https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D7WdrvedKpMY) is well worth a listen too if you're into long songs. I do prefer the edit as it just dives straight in with its brilliant intro. I love the way the song builds after the first drop too with all the techy and atmospheric sounds which remind me of how Flaming June builds (another fab trance tune) but still very original considering we don't get songs like this made these days, even by Sasha himself who now produces deep/tech house.

2000 was easily my fave year for music! I was obsessed with the charts by this point and I remember Aurora being a new entry this week too!

THE YEAR: 2009
THE GENRE: electro-house
THE ARTIST: deadmau5 (feat. Rob Swire)
THE SONG: Ghosts n' Stuff
THE UK CHART RUN: 64-63-58-{12}-17-36-57->7

THE VIDEO:

Yes, this song is now actually old enough to be eligible for my Friday Flashback ohmy.gif Time passes so quickly because yes this song is actually 5 years old now. Can't believe it myself as it sounds very ahead of its time, which is to be expected from an innovative producer like deadmau5. And considering he's mostly a progressive house producer you have to appreciate his versatility to do electro-house so well. Rob's vocals are a nice addition too although the main feature is of course the production.

this is obvs rly good

That was a brilliant chart run for a #7 hit in 2004 that The Weekend had surely? ohmy.gif

Ghosts N Stuff is a great song too, doesn't really feel "old" yet to me though. Don't think I know the other song.

The Weekend was unfortunate enough to be released in a week where there were 5 new entries in the top 5 (all from big artists too) hence the lowish peak.

The top 10 looked like this:

01 (NE) Eminem - Just Lose It
02 (NE) Destiny's Child - Lose My Breath
03 (NE) Britney Spears - My Prerogative
04 (NE) Christina Aguilera feat. Missy Elliot - Car Wash
05 (NE) Usher - Confessions Part II / My Boo
06 (01) Ja Rule feat. R Kelly & Ashanti - Wonderful
07 (NE) Michael Gray - The Weekend
08 (02) Eric Prydz - Call On Me
09 (NE) Jamelia - DJ / Stop
10 (05) Khia - My Neck, My Back (Lick It)

THE YEAR: 2000
THE GENRE: trance
THE ARTIST: Delerium (feat. Sarah McLachlan)
THE SONG: Silence (DJ Tiësto's In Search Of Sunrise Remix)
THE UK CHART RUN: {3}-4-6-7-11-13-21-28-31-37-44-45-41-47-59-62->16

THE VIDEO:

You'd never think this was the same Tiësto who produces generic dance-pop like Red Lights and Wasted, but yep 14 years ago he made an uplifting trance remix. With vocalist Sarah McLachlan on-board, it's got all the makings of a trance classic. The drop is very worth waiting for, especially after the long buildup, making for a proper moment. I particularly love how this song goes through all its verses at once, followed by the chorus, and from then on its just Tiesto's euphoric trance drops till the end! A big Friday favourite for sure!

Scorchio! wub.gif

(Delerium is also great but pretty much recognised as a classic where as Scorchio is a genuine forgotten gem)

Posted by: ►▲N 25th October 2014, 08:08 AM

Scorchio is really fab! yay i'm not the only one who loves it here! heart.gif I'm v. glad for its inclusion on one of the trance compilations I was into when I first discovered the genre, a great discovery!

Can we have the Perfecto edit of "Not Over Yet" tomorrow? I'm just listening now and its taking me back to 1999. wub.gif

Posted by: ► ▲ N 30th October 2014, 07:34 PM

you could do your own Friday Flashback biggrin.gif because I've already decided tomorrow's flashback (hint - it's a trance song with a title that doesn't sound too out of place for a halloween flashback)

It'll be Halloween themed. My bets are on for one of the following:-

Azzido Da Bass - Dooms Night
Zombie Nation - Kern Kraft 400
Brainbug - Nightmare

Looking forward to seeing what it is. biggrin.gif

THE YEAR: 1997
THE GENRE: trance
THE ARTIST: Brainbug
THE SONG: Nightmare (Sinister Strings Mix)
THE UK CHART RUN: {11}-24-39-50-55->5

THE VIDEO:

Back to the 90s now and we have a haunting trance tune from Brainbug, which is made very unique with its strings and the dark atmosphere it has. It's very well produced and deserves more recognition, well at least it's featured on a popular Halloween compilation that's top 10 on iTunes so it'll get a few plays at parties tonight hopefully!
