Bono Undergoes Surgery21 May 2010
Bono has today undergone emergency back surgery for an injury sustained during tour preparation training. He was admitted to a specialist neuro surgery unit in a Munich hospital, and is under the care of neuro surgeon Prof. Dr. Jorg Tonn and Dr Muller Wohlfahrt. U2 tour postponed after Bono undergoes back surgerySinger to remain in hospital over the weekend after injuring his back during a rehearsal

Bono is to spend the weekend in a neurosurgery unit at a hospital in Munich.

U2 frontman Bono has undergone spinal surgery after injuring his back during rehearsal, forcing the band to postpone the launch of their world tour and leaving a headline appearance at Glastonbury in the balance.

The singer, who celebrated his 50th birthday in New York last month, is to spend the weekend in a neurosurgery unit at a hospital in Munich.

The band announced tonight that it had postponed the first date of its U2360 degree tour, in Salt Lake City, on 3 June, and that other dates were now uncertain.

"Bono will spend the next few days there, before returning home to recuperate," the band said.

"Once his condition has been assessed further, a statement will be made regarding the impact on forthcoming tour dates."

Paul McGuinness, U2's manager, posted a message to fans on the site insisting any postponed dates would be rescheduled.

"The band were really looking forward to getting back out on the road until the emergency on Bono's back which took place in Munich," he said.

"We were due to start rehearsals on Tuesday in Salt Lake City and get the show ready for the next leg. There were going to be some changes, and some new material.

"It's unfortunate that we're inconveniencing fans. We will make plans to reinstate the dates as soon as possible.

"Obviously it's been very disruptive for our crew as well. We have 400-plus people converging on Salt Lake City and some of those have been turned around and told to stay at home until we make our new plan. We hope to get things resolved as soon as possible."

A "Get Well Thread" for fans to pass on their support to the singer was quickly set up on the U2 website.

"Please take care of yourself! We will all be praying for you and will keep the excitement up for when you and the guys return to SLC," one fan posted.

Another fan, also from Salt Lake City, wrote: "Take care of yourself, Bono, and get well. The tour, the fans and the excitement can wait as long as it takes. Being healthy for your family comes first."

After North America, the tour is scheduled to travel to Italy, Russia, Finland, Turkey and others.

The show earned £75.3 million in 2009, according to music journal Billboard, making it the world's most lucrative tour of the year.

The publication also predicted it would end up being the highest-grossing tour in history.

This is terrible news - poor Bono. sad.gif

Spinal surgery is very serious and generally takes months before people can get back to normal. I feel very sorry for all the hundreds of thousands of fans accross the US who have boked flights, hotels etc - although the gigs can of course be re-schedualed. What cannot be howeer is Glasto - it will be awful if they have to pull out of that but being realistic it is only in 4 weeks time and even if Bono, being his stubborn self, decides to perform no matter what, it is highly unlikely he will be able to give it 100% - and would probably have to stand still or sit down, therefor not giving a proper Bono performance. Considering how important the Glasto gig was to them and how much they would have wanted to be one of the highlights of their career I have a feeling they will pull out. sad.gif
